Okay, I have faced a weird install problem..
I was running Windows 7 on a dell studio xps 16, bought the upgrade package for 39.99 & downloaded Windows 8. It didn't give me an option to upgrade with apps, so I decided to just upgrade with Windows settings.
After a long install and a lot of reboots, it finally installed I thought all was perfect.
The Windows 8 set-up screen showed up, asked me to create a windows id for the store, completed all of this, and when finally I expect to see the Metro UI, i get a small dialog box saying set-up has failed - I click okay, and it puts me back to Windows 7.. Whats wrong!!!
After booting up, asking me to create a ID, do all that stuff - to pop up that error & put me back on Windows 7 was quite weird.
What can I do now?
(Sorry if this doesnt belong here)
Did the setup retaining Nothing.
Worked.

I was unsure whether or not this post belonged in the Windows Phone forum, or the Windows 8. However, it just makes sense to me to put it here, so I did.
I downloaded and installed the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 Release Candidate (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27153) because I have a (mango beta, ISV build 7712) Samsung Focus that has been developer-unlocked (InterOp-Unlock), and frequently sideload apps to it. Did it many many time in Windows 7 with no problems whatsoever. When the Developer Preview came out, I installed it on the same machine which I used to sideload apps from. I also installed the regular things, like Zune software (4.8). Now, whenever I open XapDeploy.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.1\Tools\XAP Deployment) , I get this error message:
Exception from HRESULT: 0x89721800
I have tried to work my Bing magic to no avail. I have tried many of the solutions found on forums online to fix this, but to no avail. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and repaired the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 Release Candidate with no fruition. Does this work in Windows 8 at all? If yes, then how can I fix my problem. If no, are there other XAP deployers that *do* work in Windows 8? Please help!!
Same error... I've to switch to Windows 7 to deploy .xap.
Sent from my Samsung Omnia 7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Try to use XAPDeployX-V0.9
you can find on the internet
That's great work!!
Yeah, that one didn't work either. Funnily enough, I got the same error, just in a different message.
"Error: Unable to start. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x89721800)"
Anyone??? Please??
That was using XAPDeployX by the way. I have tried a couple of other ones, but they didn't work. Does anyone have a clue???
I've tried about 4 different ones. I think its because they all rely on the SDK to be working. So I'm now partitioning my drive and getting XP on here so I don't have to use my old computer. Lol.
MultiXapInstall v1.1 work for me
I tried that too, and when I tried to deploy, it just crashed and quit with no error. Anyone have ANYTHING???

I actually have the same issue although mine started prior to my upgrade to Windows 8 and I actually made no changes to the phone. If I do a fresh restart on the phone and computer I can get it to ADB Reboot but then from that point on its the same "device wasn't found". Anyone have ideas?

Me, facing this problem too...
But I have a solution:
Install Windows 7 again, multiboot if you like to keep the metro style...
Windows 8 just have many problems at all...
Many apps and games won't launch or sometimes won't launch (you need to restart to play it) like Half-Life.
So, I suggest you to use Windows 7 because it's easier to use and has higher performance compared to the new W8.

What windows r u using now ? I use windows 8 but there's no auto update
to upgrade windows 8 to 8.1 you will need to first download all updates for windows 8 - This could be up to 3gb worth of updates which can be downloaded from the windows update and recovery section in pc settings
once all updates have been installed and the computer restarted to finish installation process you can then update windows 8.1 from the windows store
if it does not show either you havent installed the required updates or theres some other problem
Please note the following windows 8 do NOT support upgrade
Windows 8 Pro, if installed by an organisation or a program that uses Volume Licensing. Talk to your system admin, or the administrator of the program that was used to install Windows 8. If you’re the administrator, you can find more info and links to Windows 8.1 ISOs in the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation.
Windows 8 Pro, if installed using an MSDN or TechNet ISO, and activated using Multiple Activation Keys. You might be able to download a Windows 8.1 ISO from MSDN or TechNet.
see installation instructions

see why cant I find the update in the store

When i bought my laptop it did have Windows 7 on it. But i did have a option to bye Windows 8 cheap with a promotioncode. Sow i buyed Windows 8. But only this year i found out its a upgrade disk... Bummer. Well never likked Windows 8 much after trying testversion and seeing the final product. It made me think of Viste. (Not finnist) Never mind... I did not like the sow called Metro menu at that time. I dont like the way the settings work. Its not like i used to.
But i wanted to do somthing with this useless Windows 8 update disk. Windows 8.1 is a free update to Windows 8 users/byers. Sow i looked into some options to get Windows 8.1 with updates.. But no option i really liked. (Dont like putting in a ligit code after install. Ore running updates) What i did not want is install the Windows 8 upgrade on my Windows 7 laptop. Windows 7 works just fine. I could have made some image *.wim from the finall install.
Sow let me finally tell now what to do with the upgrade disk image. Dont use it. Its that simple! Get a Windows 8.1 with update from here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media The image will take a Windows 8 key. Thats what i wanted!!! Normally you would have to install Windows 8.1 with some default key form MS and put in the bought key after install (When using the key from the Windows 8 upgrade disk). That suck.
Well happy installing Windows 8.1 with update1 using you're Windows 8 key. That's my point haha.
Well thats not all for me. I wanted to install Windows 8.1 for a usb stick and with out to many clicks. Sow i did look into some programs like Nlite (XP) Vlite and sow on. Than i found https://www.ntlite.com/ from the same maker of Nlite and Vlite! The program Ntlite works great. Not like Nlite but still great. The build image can be tested with a program like wm player.
Sow in the and i put my Windows 8.1 on my minipc. (Conected to the tv) Windows 8.1 is just great for playing some music and movies. (I hope i can reinstall sometime with some Windows 8 driverpack by the way)

Hi!
If you're here, Windows 10 got in your way. Let me explain why.
You see, Windows 10, for some reason has an administrator permission... No, not that administrator permission. Because reasons, Windows 10 has TWO admin permissions! You are the standard one. The superior one is hidden, as a separate user! I don't get it either.
There's a command prompt that unlocks the primary admin account. A quick Google search will yield multiple guides on this matter.
Many, if not all your problems will be solved via this account. I spent 3 hours trying to install some drivers, before I was dumbstruck by the "God Account"... Install everything through that, and use your account normally!
I recommend hiding God in your PC after, since it has total power and some clever virus software might simply hijack it to install itself in the depths of your system, where no antivirus has permission to touch it...

Windows 10 if f**k**g $hit.....
Previously I spent days trying to get drivers/ADB working. Impossible. I then used my spare laptop having Windows 8.1, effortless and no issue, the whole process of unlocking bootloader, flashing recovery and SuperSU was instant.
It was not possible with Windows 10 but with Windows 8.1 it was so easy and no issues with drivers or software. Windows 10 is cancer.

It's possible that you guys just had previous drivers installed that were conflicting. I doubt it's Windows 10, as mine connected easily and quickly. Some phone drivers tend to stay in your system eventhough you might not clearly see them. I also used the 15 seconds ADB installer, for what it's worth. Maybe you guys should try that.

Even when trying the 15 second ADB installer, made no difference...
For this very reason, I upgraded my PC from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1, couldn't of been any happier.
I second the adb installer. It's easy, although the topic is more related to drivers that are outright rejected by the system. Sometimes, it's the fault of the certificate, or the lack of~. If there were old drivers, the device would've been recognised, and not treated as an "unknown device". I was livid when my Nexus 7 wouldn't work. XP It's basically a method of avoiding possible bugs or certificate issues. Again, you're correct in suggesting the adb installer! It takes the faff out of the job!

I dunno. I would start with a clean install of Windows 10, cause , to my surprise, it's different than the upgraded version! It's utter madness. The clean one is more stable, faster, less glitchy, AND DOESN'T BREAK MY WoL SETUP AFTER EVERY F...UPDATE!!!... I'm not mad... ?

I have a clean install of Win 10 also. Maybe that's why I didn't have connection/driver issues. Reason I mentioned old drivers being hidden was because that's exactly what happened to me with a Nexus 6 before doing a clean install. My computer wouldn't recognize it also, and it just kept showing unknown device. I had old Samsung and ZTE drivers still hiding in my system, and the only way I found them was when I used this Nexus tool: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Hii to all having issues with windows and android..
One thing
I have already the fall creators update before it is even released ( Oktober 17 it will be official )
Love to use windows and usually do not have trouble with android and Windows
The thing is, if you need the extra administrative privilege you need to go under
Settings then
recovery then
advanced then
restart the system for advanced options
And then choose for some drivers like adb fastboot and other stuff.. choose some opitons
You will be given like options from 1 to 9 or 10..
then you press the number 7
Number 7 means you will remove the extra driver signature the windows is asking for every driver
After pressing 7 the system will reboot..
then you need to reinstall the adb fastboot drivers
Now it will give you a window with red color .. asking you.. do you want to install this driver without the signature that is usually required..
and then you click on yes..
from that point on you will allways have that driver installed and
working in the way it should or let me say in the way every driver works after you install it..
And yes it is trouble sometimes to get adb and other android stuff working on windows 10
couse it sometimes is the way that you have all the correct files and did all the correct steps
But the thing is it is not working couse windows 10 is in that point not letting you to do that thing
couse it things its harmfull for you system or sometimes you just need to put one setting off or on
and Voillaa everything is working..
So do not give up on things try to google out the solution by the error or you tube is having
often some good tutorials on what and how it needs to be done in windows 10
