Which usb cable is the perfect replacement? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No USB cable so far has been perfect replacement for the ASUS one. Battery takes much longer to charge.
Has anyone found a perfect replacement cable? I need a cable at least 10 feet long. And don't want to use an extension USB cable.

I just got the 6' version and its charging nicely.

Nexus 7 doesn't charge when on, but charges when turned off?

It's really weird. When my nexus 7 is on, it won't charge or connect to the pc by usb, as if the usb port doesn't work. When I turn it of it charges normally, not problems whatsoever. I tried with factory cable and charger still same issue.
I don't have the receipt to return it so I have to find a fix, any ideas?
Raplacing the usb port might do the thing or is it something else? Is someone having this issue?
Thanks

You don't have enough power on your USB port. Mine charges via usb just fine while in use. My car charger does what yours is doing.
I'll assume it charges fine when using the ac charger that came with your n7?
Why you can't connect to your PC...I don't know. Like you said...maybe a bad USB port. I'm using an Asus USB 3.0/SATA lll PCI card.

My nexus 7 won't charge at all when it's on. It charges normally when of with any usb/adapter, but when off not charging at all with any usb/charger even oem one

Read the documentation. It does not support charging over USB while in use. There's not enough power through a computer USB port.

It doesn't charge even if I plug it in the wall. I have to turn off my nexus to charge it!

I have the exact same problem. Mine won't charge when on and will not connect to PC via USB. Did you ever find a solution?
I had the same problem, it turned out to be an iffy USB cable. Grabbed one of the kids micro USB cables (for their phone). Fixed the issue for me.

Doesnt matter what kind of cable I use or charger. Cant get it to do anything but Stickmount still works somehow.
Sorry to dig this out. Have the same problem as OP for a few month. Now I'am annoyed enough to find a solution.
Anybody with good advice?
Cable/charger won't matter: if GN7 is on (either active or standby) it won't charge (or get recognized by PC). If switched off, it charges anywhere (wall mount charger, PC USB, ...)
I'm also having this same problem and have been unable to find a solution after about an hour or so.
I didn't find a solution. Sold on cl for dirt cheap. Bought an n7 2013

same problem
I bought my n7 on 11-30-12. In the last month or so its developed the same problem. I called Asus for warranty. The guy says you can send it to Texas for it to be studied and repaired but it will take a LLLOOOONNNGGGG time. He said I should wait til the factory warranty ran out and hope Wallyworlds extended warranty offers to replace it with a new one. I tried taking the back off and unplugging-replugging it, didn't help. I tried a factory reset, didn't help. Guess I'll keep trolling the interweb for ideas til the end of the month and hope Wallyworld gives me a new one! Either way its the last asus for me. I may have to sharpen my teeth for all the crow I'll have to eat when I show up for a visit at my brothers' homes with an ipad air...

I had this problem with my Nexus 7 (2013). In my case, the usb charging port on the tablet was severely damaged. This caused the USB port wires to short with each other. USB charging was obviously not possible. However, the unit would charge with the wireless charger--but only when off.
Since I had a wireless charger, and the USB port was destroyed already, I took a hemostat clamp and physically snapped and removed the USB charging port and wires. Once the USB wires were no longer shorting, the wireless charging worked flawlessly.
If you don't care about USB charging or connectivity, this workaround may work for you. Otherwise, you may consider a daughterboard replacement or replacing the USB port.
Hope this helps...
You need a good wall charger, a USB port on your computer isn't going to cut it. Buy one of the high power ones from Amazon. I find mine will hold at whatever level it is at now with my Kindle's wall charger if I'm using it but will charge pretty quickly when the screen is off.
I know this is an old thread but I acquired a nexus 7 2012 from my sister. She said it doesn't charge. I did a factory reset and found that it charges when it's off and holds charge so the battery is out the equation. I purchased a new usb port and fitted and although the USB fits a lot better it still only charges when it's off. I've used plenty of wall chargers Sony, Samsung but won't charge when it's on at all. Anyone get to the bottom of this?
Thank you

This is an old thread, but I have the same problem. My N7 charges only when turned off no matter which cable or charger I use.

N4 Charging unstable?

Sometimes when I charge my phone I get spikes of charging then not charging. Wonder if this is a problem with the USB port or its just a dust issue there?

I think this phone just has a retarded charging port. The plug doesn't stay in securely which causes the phone to charge slow, first of all. And I recently started having the problem you described. It will say charging, not charging back and forth a bunch of times. Are you using a case? When this happens, I take off my case to make sure the plug is in there securely and I also make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the wall securely and that the USB plug is plugged into the AC adapter securely as well. This usually helps.
Charging this phone is such a headache sometimes.
That happened to me like a month ago and the charger was the culprit. But I also had slow charging (even with the wall adapter, it would eventually change to USB charging) and it wouldn't reach full charge. You might want to try another charger, just in case.

I've seen this also and cleaned my USB pins...seemed to help.

I have to agree. I am using a different charger because the one it came with sucks. I would wake up to a phone that had 50% even though it was on the charger all night.

My Nexus 4 does this when I use the LG USB cable, but I don't remember if it happened with the stock charger. I lost that a long time ago, and now I use the charger from my old Motorola Atrix, which works fine if I use a cable other than the LG cable. I think my cable is damaged, but it feels like the cable always did that. If I plug my dads Atrix HD into the LG cable, it does the same unstable charging as my Nexus.
I have the same issue, have tried multiple chargers and cables, even happens over Qi.
I have a replacement phone coming
Had this too, charger was broken, just try another charger first.
I'm now using a standard samsung charger
I had this problem with the official charger, but it works well when I charge it using my computer usb ports (I prefer lower current when I charge over night) and the Nexus 10 charger.
Thanks for all your responses...it seems to be better now after cleaning the ports....but still happens sometimes...I'm trying to do a RMA for it but have a question...what if during their testing it didn't happen would I need to pay for the replaced device?

N⁴ Only Charges via USB

Long story short, upgraded to 4.3 (not stock) and noticed my phone was at 3% in the morning despite being plugged in.
Checked to see if the charger was messed, it wasn't (worked with another phone and it displays a blue light while plugged in). Even so, I tried another charger. Plugged that in the wall and tried different sockets, nothing.
Called Google, said I might need a replacement, I don't really want to go through that... I'd have to transfer warranty, etc.
They also ,mentioned blowing into the charging port, so I did. The phone started to charge for 3-5 seconds, and then it stopped again. So I decided to plug it into my laptop and it began charging...
I don't want to have to rely on USB to charge my phone and the replacement is my kind of last resort, so what do you guys think I can do to fix my faulty port?

Does not sound like hardware issue to me. You're saying that it charges through a PC's USB and not when using AC charger. Don't both charging methods use the same micro-usb from the phone? You can try things like restarting, flashing the factory image, shutting off.

Get a Qi wireless charger. Simple solution. . That or replace the charging daughter board. They are only $15.

No. Charging works fine

did you try a different usb cable? I've noticed the cable shipped with the phone is pretty inferior. The wall wart could be fine but the cable is going bad.

Yeah the cable I got with my n4 is pure garbage. Flashes charging on and off constant. I just threw it away.

Well, oddly enough I'm at a different home right now and AC charging works here... I don't know if it works at my home, but it does here. I'm very confused right now

Basically have to get a replacement, can't do anything else about it. So what are the best options to back up all of my stuff and return to stock? If I can return to stock straight from the N⁴ that'd be wicked :3

I had an issue like this on my gnex. When it was at this point, it would charge on usb or with the phone powered off. Not to much longer and the port died, Had to replace it.If you can get an exchange, I would go that way vs. replacing the cable\port. Replacing the ribbon cable and port has possibility of breakage it you don't have a "light touch".

Does the Nexus 7 have a longer micro USB

Hey there
I have a nexus 7 (not the 2013 edition) and the USB cable with it has just broke. I tried using the cable from my SGS3 and the connector is shorter and just falls out. So I was unsure if the Nexus need a long one or the SGS3 uses a short one?
Thanks Mala

I've used them interchangeably.
The OEM N7 one might be a little 'fatter', but that's manufacturing tolerances....
Just the luck of the draw.
Many cords will work for charging, but many of those will not work on a pc-usb connection for data transfer. Try a different usb cord for a better fit to the microusb port and be sure to test it with the pc connection.

[Q] Nexus 7 2012 charging cable replacement

So I have had my Nexus 7 2012 for awhile now, and at some point I dropped it while it was charging, it landed on the cable which broke the USB port and the cable. I put in a new charging port and tried using a generic cable and it charged it very slowly. So I bought the Samsung cable and that worked for about 3 weeks, but the cable then started to fall out of the port and now if I wanted to use it, I'd have to hold it in all the time. So right now I am stuck with a generic cable and have no idea what to replace the cable with. I wanted to get the original cable, but I can only find it with the power brick. Which would cost me $40.
Do any of you know of cables that'd work well with mine?
