So I've been using my Nexus for the weekend, mine only has a small screen separation, but nothing to whine about, I haven't rooted mine, because there's no reason for
I was just customizing the launcher, when I opened the recent apps window and closed an app, and IT JUST FROZE! I know I sound like a complete noob, but the screen just f**king froze, at first I could turn the screen on and off, but now it's stuck on and the only thing I can think of is waiting for the battery to run out, but that will take a while.
Is there any emergency shutdown button behind the cover instead of a removable battery?
Thanks for your help, and sorry for not searching, I'm on Tapatalk
Lol, tried holding the power button for a long time, and it rebooted the device, problem fixed and now I know how to turn off

My phone died today and when I got home to charge it, I noticed that after pressing the sleep/power button, the screen turns off and then about a second later comes back on. It does this regardless of if it's plugged in or not. I took it into Sprint and they're going to give me a new one when they get their paws on some. Right now I'm just looking for ANY possible work around to the problem.
I've done a factory reset, added a pattern/code, and installed NO LOCK but nothing can keep the screen from coming back on after pushing the power button...
(I also had another problem with the phone, the camera has a HOT PINK tinge about 85% opacity. I can go without the camera for a few weeks until the new one gets here but any help with that is very welcome)

Everything is stock.
Mine had a similar problem when I was on 2.1 I would charge the phone overnight and at some point in time the phone would turn the screen on and not turn back off. Or sometimes it would sitting on my desk and just randomly turn the screen on. After I upgraded to 2.2 it stopped. I never could figure out what was causing it to wake.
Are you using ChoiceDialer+? There is a known bug where the screen will not shut off after making a call with ChoiceDialer, though a reboot does fix it.
I've read up on a lot of threads about hard and soft bricking. I think I my phone may have somehow hardbricked, but i don't know how for sure, as my situation doesn't really match what I've read on either case. Pretty much, it has randomly gone all black screen on me once or twice over the last week. This morning I noticed it did it again. To get it back on, I usually have to pull the battery. This morning, though, it wont boot back up. The "Galaxy S4" screen shows for a second or two, and then immediately goes black again. I tried recover, and the blue text on the top left corner shows, but again the screen goes black after a second or two at the Galaxy S4 screen without making it to recovery. Download mode? Same thing. It goes through the steps, and after a second or two of the "Press volume down to cancel, up to continue..." or whatever message, it goes black. If I'm fast enough, I can press volume up and get it to the "Downloading... do not turn off target." screen. but it immediately goes black again.
Each of these times it goes black, none of the buttons respond, the power button doesn't work, and I have to pull the battery again.
One thing to note is that every time, no matter how long i leave the battery out, it immediately tries to boot when I put the battery in. It's almost acting like the power button is stuck down, but it isn't. I can press it and it clicks normal. I haven't dropped it or anything, and the last rom I flashed was the Super S4 rom about 2 weeks ago or so.
Any ideas? I'm a bit worried about sending it back in as it's been rooted and flashed, and i'm obviously not able to unroot and get it back to stock.
Taking the advice of my oh-so-wise girlfriend, I smacked my phone on my desk a couple of times, and it seems to work now I'm guessing the power button really was stuck despite it clicking, and this un-stuck it?

Lol I've heard of this happening before with the power button being stuck. Thus not allowing the phone to boot up.
One time I had a screwed up an S3 and it was whack. Kind of like your situation, what I did was take the battery out had it plugged into the computer and held the power button down for 30 seconds and it vibrated. So i poped in the battery and it worked.
Now while the button inside may be stuck or sticking.. I would HIGHLY suggest not smacking it on a desk. The LCD display IS glass. I have a habit of giving my phone a good old smack on the back.. I feel like I'm 'burping my baby'. The soft tissue of your hand is typically enough to dislodge any sticky hardware.. without running the risk of a cracked LCD.. or worse.. a cracked digitizer... :0
Power button stuck
I had the same issue and I also thought I had hard bricked my phone. It was acting like a stuck power button but I could still feel the small click when I pressed the button. The solution that I found was taking out the battery and lightly (I mean lightly not near enough to cause and damage) tapping directly on the power button. I have had this problem several times now with my S4 and this has worked every time so far.
A friend has an S4 GT-I9505. It was bought second hand few months ago.
Lately it has been acting up. Shutting down randomly but now it won't turn back on. We sometimes manage to get it back on, but no always.
It isn't the battery since I have inserted my battery into the phone and it still won't turn on. It won't turn on even when connected to the charger.
We figured it might be the power button so we took it to a guy to check it out. The guy took the phone apart looked at the button and said the button is ok.
He put the phone back together and it somehow worked without problems for a few days (up until now).
He said that the phone might be shorted somewhere. The thing that led him to that conclusion is that he noticed that when inserting the battery the phone would try turn on without pressing the power button.
He also said the boot might be dead because the phone won't go into recovery nor into download mode. Even if it manages to boot into them, it will turn off almost immediately sometimes.
The phone is running 5.0.1 GPE custom rom with Googy-Max kernel. No tweaks or mods.
I know this sounds a lot like a hardware problem. The only thing that makes me have doubts is that it works occasionally without any problems.
He looked at the power button. Honestly it's no surprise he didn't find anything wrong with the power button because the problem with the power button is inside the tiny metal casing making up the button, and it's something that can't be seen.
Get a second opinion from someone other than the guy you took this to. However, I believe this to be a power button issue, easily fixed by replacing the button.
As I said, He took the phone appart, took the motherboard-logic board, whatever you want to call it, out and looked at it. He also took that tiny metal casing that forms the power button out, leaving a tiny white "something" exposed. I guess that's what you're talking about
But I really hope you're right and it's the power button.
Edit: We were the whole time there while he took the phone apart and looked at it. So we saw everything he did. And he didn't do anything special except take it apart and put it back together and it somehow worked for a few more days.
I guess it really is the button. I managed to change the rom, kernel, bootloader. The phone booted up. I pressed the button once to lock the screen but nothing happened. 1 second after that the boot menu appeared. The next second the phone shut down and now it won't turn on again. Except for a brief moment to show the S4 screen and then turns off again.
HELP.. RIP my SGS4?
Okay so I have been researching for the last week for solutions..in fact i have not found the exact same problem I have..
Samsung Galaxy S4 White 16gb Rogers
Running Lollipop that was pushed by rogers
Not rooted, nothing custom
Battery works fine on other S4's, new battery didn't help my phone
Problem: Every time i turn it on, it shows the "SAMSUNG GALAXY S4" for about a second or two and then turns off and wont turn on again until i take the battery out and put it back in...where it does that again, before i could drain any sparks left from the phone before putting the battery back in and it would turn on and i can use it until i touch the power button, where it would pop the prompt to turn off/restart device where then it would just turn off.. if it got a little to heated it would do the same. My friend is a phone technician and he said he cant find the problem...so I am hoping someone here can help me out. The battery will probably die soon and I cant seem to get it to charge.
I have factory reset it twice and nothing helped. I factory reset in recovery mode both times.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day and someone is able to help me out.. I kinda dont have a phone now Anyways, thanks.
P.S. I can upload a video to show you what I mean if you dont understand my typing lol.
My only advice is the typical one, use Odin to restore, rather than factory reset.

I had this exact same problem. It's an issue with the power switch. Mine went away after a while one time, the second time I just mashed the power button and put in the battery to see if it would turn on and kept doing that until it worked. It can also help if you just tap that side of the phone on a hard surface, maybe aim the button for the edge of your desk, but not hard.
More technical alternatives involve opening up the phone and cleaning the contacts of the power button with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, or just desoldering and soldering a new one after testing the old one with a multimeter.
EDIT: as far a new phones go, I'd keep an eye between the Nexus phones and the Moto X Pure Edition.

Yea I opened it up and looked in, the screen connector ribbon looked like as if ink or black marker was put on it and i cleaned it up and it turned on but after hitting power button it turned off... but i got it on but squeezing the screen and back near the power button when using it and it seems to make the power button work.. I got an app to lock my screen but i guess until i get a new phone i can stick with this sideline for my phone haha. Thanks tho
As for phones, I love the Nexus family haha, Moto X Pure isnt in Canada It would be to much of a hassle to get it in though i could. I really want the Xperia Z5, Nexus 5x or 6p. As a graphic designer everyone is telling me to get an iPhone tho... Ill see when ever the S4 gives out on whats in the market #Android4Life.
EDIT: I also tried the banging thing and stuff and it didnt help lol

Does holding the home button power your phone? Mine does, though it takes about 10 seconds to do so.
And please don't listen to that iPhone nonsense, why would a graphic designer ever do so?!

It powers up and shows "Samsung Galaxy S4" but goes to a black screen after seeing the logo for 2-4 seconds, i have to take it apart and reconnect everything on the motherboard, plug it into an outlet and boot in download mode and then reboot the phone for it to turn on, and the second the power button is touched, it turns off in 5 seconds. Today the GS4 turned off by itself twice and it took my about 2 hours to get it back on.
I love androids, don't get me wrong, Android>iPhone>Blackberry>Windows phone.. I chose an android over the iPhone already, twice. As of right now, performance wise the iPhone seems to be pretty good, price wise? Apple needs to die. lol. Overall I would pick between the Z5, iPhone 6+/6s+ or any of the upcoming Nexus phones. Which ever is cheaper or better money wise at the time when my GS4 fully dies off...which will be soon... is the phone ill get. Which is why I have the pole up there..
I currently use Samsung Tab A and the SGS4 and an iPod Touch 5th gen. Everything runs smooth on my iPod tho.. so I can't wait until I get either the Z5, iP or Nexus.

That is my problem, the phone turning off right away
Hi Xda family,
Here is the video ; https://youtu.be/bDWUyG7w4-M
I have note 4 , and today just immediately for no reason its started to open google search page, then shutting it down, when try to read whatsapp message its goes back to home page and starts open google, i cant look ,check, read, anything, its like ghost touching to my phone,-and its really fast-, i have no control on the phone, if someone calls i can reply, there is no water damage, no dropping down, i haven't seen anything like that before.
i can't lock phone from power button,if i am lucky i can lock it but then screen starting to turn on and turn off, i made cache cleaning, i dont want to format because i have to do back up some data, no new apk's the last apk i install like 2 months ago....
any ideas?
video added.
Did you already try factory reset or reflashing of stock rom via odin?

One most probable cause is smudges/sweat.
Wipe your screen clean & dry the let see if the problem occurs.
Another probability is damaged Home Button.
Looks like home button issue. Make sure its not partially jammed in somehow. Could be an issue under the home button inside the case....

i have done factory reset, wipe cache, screen cleaning..
The above posts are probably right suggesting a broken Home Button. You can try to disable the physical home button and install an on-screen navigation bar.
i took it to the technical service. lets see what is the result and i will write down the info here.
Solution : I took the device from service. They changed the charge socket, home button and i have got my device back, no problem.
So as a result it's hardware problem.
Thanks for helps
Glad it got fixed pretty quickly for you
