Hey guys
While I love my Galaxy Nexus, it's just too big for my tiny woman hands.
The Razr M 4G is going to be released in Australia at the end of the month and I'm trying to decide if I should enter a contract to purchase it or just stick with my Galaxy Nexus (which doesn't have 4G but the 3G speeds on Telstra is still pretty good).
I really like the narrowness of the M because I'll be able to type with one hand but I'm concerned with the quality of the screen and camera quality and the loudness of the speakers.
The GNex doesn't have the greatest screen and camera neither but I'm satisfied with it. I don't want to feel like I'm downgrading. As long as the M isn't worse then I'll be happy.
My main uses will be web browsing, chatting on WhatsApp and watching a few YouTube videos. I take the odd picture sometimes and that's it.
If any Razr M users out there who previously used a GNex could give me their opinion on the M, it would help make my decision easier.
Thanks!

I just got my razr M after switching from a nexus s. I also have played with a GNex a lot since my brother has it. In my opinion, the size of the razr M is definitely perfect for people with small hands and wants to have a daily driver. Texting is a breeze and the web browser is fast. Of course your trading in those few extra mm of screen real estate. In terms of screen, resolution is lower but you will adjust to it within a few weeks. Camera quality isnt the best but its fine for those taking shots here and there.
In the end, think of the razr M not as a downgrade but a smaller Gnex. So you won't be blown away by anything new but you will have a thin, light and perfect to hold phone.

More or less spot on. Dropped my nexus after using the M for a couple weeks. I sold it because of what he just said.

I like the gnex more because I'm a flashaholic, and the design on it , but the RAZR m is faster, has more potential lasts longer, and is definitely more compact, the camera also is faster and the shots come out nice
It is honestly a great phone and I easily recommend it, its not all that different from the galaxy nexus, except this phone won't feel as old when contracts up
Thank you guys for replying.
I will get the M when it comes out here.

Nailed it!
I have a gnex and RAZR m I use equally everyday.
The gnex holds a 4g signal where the m goes to 3g.
The gnex has a better camera also. My gnex is a personal phone and RAZR is business, but I usually pull the gnex out for taking pictures. I take about 20 pics a day for work.
The reason I did a razr m was size. I wanted small cause I already carry a gnex. Size wise it is great
I dont notice much speed difference, but i also dont play games either.
Just my 2 cents. Both great phones though.
Late to the party, but thought I'd share my experience.
Had a GNex since release and overall it was a decent phone. Had power, good screen and thin enough. Having said that, the battery life was horrible, and radio issues caused me to drop it.
Literally... I dropped it. On accident. Cracked the screen!!
So instead of spending 100 on an insurance claim, I started researching... my wife has the RAZR MAXX, which I've always been jealous of. So after reading many, many reviews and scouring ebay/swappa for used options, I bought the RAZR M retail edition.
Only had it 3 days so far, but let me tell you... battery life is AMAZING. My GNEX had the extended battery and barely made it 9 hours before going down under 10%. I'm going on 10 hours right now and still have 77% left.
Camera isn't as good (but not much worse) and screen is smaller (lower res) but colors are sure rich. Hope this helps someone else down the road.
Update, I've been using the Razr M for 2 months now and one of the things I miss most from my Gnex was the HD screen and camera.
Even with my bad eyesight I can see the pixels clearly but it doesn't bother me as much as the camera. Just can't get a good picture. Argh!
On the plus side, call quality and reception is excellent. Much better than the Gnex. I love the small compact size of the M. Also, the speaker is nice and loud.
I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this but the bottom of the aluminium frame's black paint is chipping. See attached photo. You can see the 3 dots clearly on the left of the phone. Tried using a black paint marker to cover them up but made it look worse.

I get a bit sick of ppl saying "I can clearly see the pixels" on this phone. Sure it's not an HD screen but I've got 20/20 vision and can't make out a pixel.

Here's a video I made last night pitting my new Nexus 4 up against my HTC One X in a variety of real world scenarios.
The One X is running the CM10 nightly from 20121109.
Despite what it looks like in the video, the One X is so fast that most people (including me) would not ask for more. Also, the screen and camera are far better.
At about the 1 minute mark, I demonstrate how the colours and contrast diminish when you look at the Nexus 4 screen at an angle.
Love my N4, but I love the One X as well. Both are brilliant phones.
I just don't like the look and feel of the one x. Plastic and annoying design that to me looks ugly. I told my friend to get the one x a while back and then changed my mind and told him to get the s3 but it was too late and he got the one x and I was like DAM thats an ugly phone lol

I realize this is entirely a matter of personal taste, but to me the One X (especially the new black, softtouch One X+) has a much more high quality feel than the Nexus 4. The One X+ also feels better in my hand, because it has a more contoured back.
The Nexus 4 certainly is a nice phone. But the glass back comes across to me as more glitzy, than high quality.
You can also see in the video how much more useable vertical screen place the One X has, due to the capacitive buttons. It really does seem like a huge waste of space, to me, to have the home and back buttons on the screen.
Great vid,
All the moaning of a yellow screen, and the ONE X actually has more of a yellow tint.
And the ONE X screen is beautiful, so thanks for clearing up all my worries.
Screens do look very similar to me on this video
I would have liked to see a notification light, game loading and video watching comparison though aswell.
Sent from my HTC ONE X using Tapatalk 2
Both are simular. Thanks for the video. I actually have the sensation and it's pretty fast as well though it does have its moments.
I'd still get the Nexus as its supported from AOSP. Where as 2 years down the line, we'd still have a lot of development going on. Unlike HTC phones after a year or two, it seems like it dies down

And just to demonstrate how much opinions differ, I think my N4 feels better in hand than my One X.
Personally, I think the One X looks beautiful. The contrast of the white curved around the black glass is just a design that's unmatched by any other phone. The One X+ in black looks awesome to my eyes as well.
I think materials of the N4 feel better. But the shape of the One X feels better. To hold in the hand, even though there is only 1mm in it in any direction, the One X feels far smaller. HTC really have the industrial design down pat.
Screens are very similar front on, but the viewing angles of the One X's screen are much better, which I tried to demonstrate in my video.
I hadn't thought of notification lights. The N4's is much softer but has the advantage of being RGB.
Game loading is similar to loading any of the other apps, the N4 is quite a bit faster.
I changed from the One X to the N4 because HTCDev doesn't give you S-OFF which isn't acceptable to me. Also, not being a Nexus means that AOSP-based ROMs have little issues such as bad wifi and worse battery life.
I was unfortunate to get in the LL3 train, but I should be getting my N4 by Wednesday hopefully. I have a Nexus S right now that is rooted and am hoping to get some insite on how people are liking their N4's coming from the Nexus S. I know the N4 has almost 4 times the RAM as the Nexus S and much more CPU and GPU power, but Nexus S is running pretty well. I just want to know what are people's experiences! Can't wait to get my own N4!

You will love it! I have the nexus s for my work phone and then the N4 as my personal phone. If you like the Nexus S then i can assume you like stock android and thus the N4 is like stock android but on steriods because of how much faster and smoother it is. There will be some differences though, the N4 has the LCD screen while the Nexus had the Amoled (thinking about that i think they did do a LCD screen of the nexus but mine is Amoled anyway) so colours will look different, however you will love how sharp the screen is since its a huge bump in resolution.
The camera is a million times better than the S
On screen buttons you should be ok with, some people dont like them because it takes up screen real estate, however since you're coming from the S that screen is only 4inch so the bump to 4.4inch of userable screen should still be good. (also as a side point i came from the GS3, people who moan about they should put buttons on the bezel are idiots who know nothing, i cant tell you how many times you accidently hit buttons when holding the phone in landscape because they have no bezel on the bottom of the phone as its took up by buttons)
The only thing which is neither good or bad, its just different, will be the construction, the N4 is far far superior in construction quality, so you will either love it for that as it feels fantastic in the hand....... or you will hate it because its made out of glass and thus is prone to cracks if you drop it, where as the nexus S is more durable.
My general opinion is that that should be obvious, its glass.... it will break, if your one of these people who are super careful you will be fine, if you generally drop your phone often, get a case/bumper
bar that you should love it, since you didnt have LTE in the first place or removal storage, these are things you havent lost.
The last thing i will say is since you've come from a stock google device, it should be super super easy restroing all your items when you load into your account on your new phone
I have an SGS1 with custom ROMs, which is almost identical hardware. The difference between the two is really immense. A bigger, nicer screen with zero stutter or lag when doing almost anything. Apps are quick, everything is snappy.
Now when I look back at my Nexus S (though I came to N4 via Galaxy Nexus after the "S"), it is hard to even compare the two. I'd say you will be for a better experience pretty much on every single front. Except for size maybe - you'd definitely need some time to get used to the much wider phone. Especially if you plan on using case/bumper.

I have the Nexus 7 right now and I love it! The lack of LTE doesn't really bother me because I know T-mobile HSPA+ is more then enough. The glass design makes me really happy because I feel like its the first android phone worth showing off to people! I'm just so used to the speed on my Nexus S that when I turn on the Nexus 4 I'm expecting a world's of difference. I can't wait!

Coming from a tiny little iPhone 4, being 3.5 inches, 4.7 is already overwhelming. I also don't think I have that kind of room in my pockets since i wear Skinny Jeans. The biggest worry I've had so far with getting the One will be fitting it in my pants. xD Definitely not disappointed, and really its only .3 inches more. Not that big deal. I agree I think it should be the full 5" but not at the expense of a bigger form factor, like more screen size w/ less bezel.
Well it may not be 5" but with the pixel density it'll be the most amazing screen. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I'm mad at my phone for not being the one! hmph!

I wish it was 5 inches as well... I can only hope the 4.7 inch design means its more ergonomic.
for me is best this way, better pixel, and size is great!
I think it was probably a good call, as much as I like 5 inches, I think this is the phone that iPhone users can be confident in, especially after I've owned the DNA and converted a few that I wouldn't have recommended to previous models because of their usage and what they want in a phone.
The 4.7 is a nice median size for those upgrading from smaller form factors and those used to large form factor.

I was disappointed that it was not 5". But Sense 5 looks great, the camera software looks great, the screen looks great, the design looks great, the speakers look (and sound from what I've heard on videos) great. As it stands, there is so much great about this phone, it is making me easily forgive and forget about the 0.3" missing from this phone. I expect and hope, the next One flagship will be a 5" screen..

So.... I just left my local AT&T store after some quality hands-on time with the Moto X. My verdict: take my damned money, Motorola!
Disclaimer: I'm not a Moto or AT&T rep, just a guy who's owned 10+ Android devices since the G1 and up to the Galaxy S4. And currently I'm rocking the Lumia 1020 as my daily driver: love it too!
So I walked in at 9am when the store opened and made a quick sweep of the store looking for a Moto customatic booth. Today is the official launch and my bet was 50/50 they'd have a display up and running. Turns out they didn't :/ Way to go AT&T! Next I made a bee line for the store manager. Long story short: he didn't know when they would have display models available but he was more than happy to open a brand new white model up for me...
So? The Moto X feels fantastic. Think iPhone size, but rounded to fit exactly in your hands. I can honestly say there's no other phone outside of Nokia's Lumia series that feels as good in hand as the X. I'm 6'0" and have what I consider to be average size paws. The svelte bezels meant I could effortlessly reach all the way to the far corners of the screen, FINALLY :victory: I'm totally in love. Manufacturers keep making these razor-thin slabs with zero ergonomics and it's time for a revolution (seriously).
Since I'm a little busy this morning I will list a few observations and hopefully post some pictures later:
- The phone is SOLID. Both in weight and balance. Again the best comparison here is the iPhone 4S (I've never owned one but played with them enough). The guts of this little machine must be packed tight because it feels nothing like Samsung's M.O. of light and flimsy.
- The screen is sharp and and saturated, just like every AMOLED I've used before. Side by side with the GS4 I could discern no difference in screen quality. I would like to throw in the personal opinion that 1920x1080 on a 5", much less a 4.7" screen is completely unnecessary. Completely. GS4 owners (I was one) can argue till they're blue in the face but they'd still be mistaken. If 720p was excellent on a Note II at 5.5" then 720p at 4.7" is that much better. Yep, it's true.
- The buttons did not rattle or feel loose as some reviewers have mentioned. This is just one unit I tried but I didn't see looseness/rattling in it. We'll see how those buttons actually hold up after regular usage.
- I didn't test the camera. I will when they get the display models in. What's gonna beat the Lumia 1020 anyway?
- More to come....
Nice first impressions! Looking forward to more
Oh and when I read the title for a second I thought that you had gotten hold of a device called the "moto X mini" and I'm like holy crap is this real!? Lol and then I reread it again at then facepalmed.

Haha, thanks for the kudos! I changed the title to disambiguate a bit. The Moto X is already "mini" :good:
I also went into the att store to look at the device. My thoughts:
One of the best feeling phones. It's amazing how small it is yet how much screen you get
The voice commands work well. In a loud ATT store, I just said okay google and i said it in a whisper and it picked it up.
the screen was not as good. I've had a droid dna for 9 months, i can tell a difference. The whites are more yellowish. The icons are good, the problem with going 1080p vs 720p is not the pictures, its the font. The font on the htc was customized better.
I coudln't try active notifications even though i have it on my phone through google play store. It's stupid to me that att or any other carrier puts some stupid video so the phone never turns off. When i turn off the phone and try to put it face down, i get some stupid moto x video and not the active notifcations. It really is super stupid. Nice job ATT.
Camera was okay. I did notice it was slightly washed but it was okay. when using it it, the tap to focus was not turned on by default yo uhave to go to settings and turn it on. after that, it focused better. The focus was relativaliey sharp and i just applied aftereffects to the phone and i was fine with the phone. I even compared it to the htc one and i wasn' tlike "oh wow the htc one is so much better"
Overall, i was dissapointed by the screen but very very very impressed with the build, size and body. It's very tempting.
Went and checked it out as well. Returned my OG Pro that I got a week ago and paid the extra $140 to cover the additional cost of the Moto X. The phone just feels right as corny as that sounds. I go through phones like no other, but this one has a good upside and feel.
I have a feeling that this phone will be one of those phones that everybody will crap on saying the HTC One or the S4 will be infinitely better without trying the phone out.
But as soon as they try it out they will change their tune and say it is a great phone and would be willing to trade their phone in for it.
Thanks for all the info, everyone. Just got a One a few weeks back so probably not in the upgrade market, but curious to see how this Device does. It's nice to see Google out there and focusing their efforts on non-nexus devices...the more access consumers have to this tech, the better. The active notifications sound really awesome, however, I can't stand the color rendering of the AMOLEDs. I know, I know, this has been said 1000x. But having spent much of my career assembling documents and presentation with a high level of graphic design attention, these AMOLEDs just kill to look at. The not-quite-white whites and super-saturated blues and greens just burn a hole in my soul. That said, still can't wait to get a hold of this thing and give it a run in the store. From what I can tell right now, this sounds like something I'd strongly consider upgrading to if I were in the market for a device.

Why's that if you don't mind me asking? What is it about the other two that is more appealing than the Moto X?
The moto X screen is great and the whites are whiter than the S4. My favorite features are the notifications and the Motorola Connect, love it.

I don't mind at all!
The phone is pretty good, but there are some things I like quite a lot more about the GPe One or GS4.
Both of them have better displays. The One's aluminum is terrific. Stock android is amazing.
I think the only thing I'll really miss, and I mean really, is the voice control. It's really awesome.

Oh you went with the google play models, now that changes everything! I can see how you like those more than this phone.
I had a Google play s4 and decided on the moto x. For me its the size of the device. Being able to handle it easier one handed feels a lot better than trying to juggle the s4. Both great phones though. Maybe the s4 will get pulled out of the drawer one day

Just bought my Moto X from motomaker, made an order on thursday and received it this morning - so fast (St Louis, MO)!
So my main concert is the screen brightness. Even my Galaxy Nexus was not the brightest phone that I ever had, but Moto X screen is even dimmier. It is probably the same screen that was used at Galaxy Note 2 except being smaller. That screen was dim as well. That causes the display to be reflective to lamps and sun which annoys me.
Second thing that I did not like so far, is, surprise, the phone's shape which everybody likes. For me the edges are too sharp, maybe I just have too big hand.
Camera is a little bit better than Galaxy Nexus camera, for me the quality of it is ok so far.
But active notifications rock.
Do you know if it will be possible to increase the brightness somehow?

I don't find the brightness to be an issue, even turned all the way down - any chance you can go to a retailer and check to see how the brightness compares on one of their floor models? It seems like that could be a defect, rather than working as intended.
I don't know the Max brightness is fine for me. I actually wish the brightness went Lower. That is really not that big of a problem. As for the camera I don't know what all the criticism is about. The low light could be better but I think the regular shots are very good

Eh, depending on the kernel drivers maybe increasing the brightness is possible. But I doubt it. I think its happened before on other devices, but usually LCD screens. This is amoled so I bet it won't happen.

2nd, i find it quite bright. In most cases i have it set pretty dim. I'd compare in store.
That's AMOLED for you. I had 2x GNEX and both had different brightness and colour. One had to be 55% to be equivalent to the other at 30%.
If you think it is too dim, you are probably right. Just exchange it.

My Gnex with Faux kernel can be set to a ridiculously bright setting through rgb and gamma. Then you have active display/screen mode on the other Galaxy devices so it's possible.

May just be defective. I leave my screen around 40 percent and it's more than bright enough even in sunlight.

I find the camera to be inconsistent. Some photos look great and others look like they have a gray haze over them. I think it just has issues with white balance, really. Because of that, in outdoor sunlight photos look pretty good, but with LED lighting, or CFL lighting, they look washed out.
Hopefully the new update makes it more consistent.

How pure is this Moto X android in comparison with the GS4, HTC One, Xperia Z
You know the pure android.
How much is this android distant with the "pure edition"? (Manufacturer bloatware (except for google))

According to the reviews I've read on Android Central by Phil and Jerry, it is stock Android with a couple of added features that are beneficial rather than gimmicky. The skin looks like vanilla Android, whereas TouchWiz, Sense, etc. use difference icons, different menus, OEM-specific apps (like Samsung's S Voice, for example), etc. The Moto X seems to be stock Android 4.2 with a transparent navigation bar, active notifications, and the Motorola app to connect the phone to the computer (so you can get incoming texts, etc. on your desktop).

It has a very pure Android feel. As mentioned above, there are just a couple nice additions. The active notifications really should be included on all smart phones.

I completely agree with the edges but I also agree it is because you have big hands. I was dropping the phone all the time because of its size. I got this case that fits nice is a little bit thicker and looks pretty nice. I actually only got the case because I wanted a little but more grip on the phone with these shaq like hands I have.
