Which provides more battery life.
Im on CM5 now and my battery dies SO FAST you can almost see it going down just watching the screen, i have the screen turned all the way down, use only 2g networks. ever tried to under-clock, when i check battery usage says system idle uses 49%
any ideas ?
Are you serious?
Better yet, don't use the phone at all, that might save the battery.
Dude with those settings its like having a 20th Century device.
Flash another ROM or something, try wiping battery stats, it has been suggested all over the forum...
Why do I even bother...when the mods see this youre a gonner anyway.
It's not so much the ROM, its the apps and widgets you have installed. Some are poorly written, some don't play nice with other apps or certain set ups.
All you can do is install a monitoring app like system panel, and remove the apps that are using alot of CPU.
That's what I have done.

listen pal what im saying is my battery doesnt last for **** since i flased CM5 so im wondering if thats to be expected with CM5 and maybe fixed in CM6. but yea ur super helping that for the sarcastic reply, next time dont bother. ooh and btw i dont have to use the phone for it to die with in like 10 hours it will be idle the entire time and it will die.

and thank you for your helpful reply i will look into the apps i have.
EDIT: Battery usage says system idle is nearly 50% of usage, even after i kill all the apps :[
LOL! Wow, someone's a little edgy...
It's definitely not a "CM5 issue" that would be fixed in CM6 (CM6 is still in RC, CM5 has had several stable releases!) eyegor's suggestion to wipe battery stats was probably good advice believe it or not. Charge full, power off, leave plugged in. Boot into recovery and wipe battery stats. Power down, unplug and start up, let it drain allllll the way.
Check out xda homepage even - a battery calibration post!!
Battery life is pretty variable as you can see in the numerous threads on this topic. CM's forum has one with a poll with most saying CM6 is better, but not a clear cut answer.
I used SystemPanel's monitor function to identify which app was eating battery. It worked great! My biggest offender was Weather and Toggle widget. I loved its customization but its battery gulping was just not worth it. Got rid of it and my battery life is much more consistent.
I also got a cheapie battery off eBay which helped.
Both CM5 and 6 run perfect on my phone. No battery drains.
My point was that you're in the wrong section, pal.
You also might want to watch logcat while the phone is idle or sleeping to see if there are numerous errors or warnings scrolling by when there should be very little activity.
I have a similar issue. Initially I had the rediculous drain, but as mentioned wiping battery stats from recovery fixed it for the most part. Once it says its fully charged and you turn the phone off, let it sit charging overnight. Then wipe the stats in the morning and don't charge again until the phone turns itself off. Only issue I have now is that when I've got my GPS turned on, in use or not, it kills the battery. While in use I get about 2 hours from a full battery to the phone turning itself off. Haven't figured that one out.

No worries. It freaked me out when I first flashed 5.0.8. I use my phone as an MP3 player in my truck with it plugged in to my CD players AUX Jack. Did a 5 hour road trip and only lost around 10% including a few phone calls.

Rar! Faux-mod is angry!
Hi,
I do not have enough posts to place this in the developer forum. However I update my Defy with each nightly build and since the 2nd boot nightlies I too have experienced really poor battery drain. I have fixed this by disabling two features in Google Maps.
Go to: system settings--> Google-->Maps and Latitude
Disable both location reporting and enable location history.
Instantly my battery has gone back to previous performance and after 17 hours I have 79% left. Previously this would have been less than 30%.
some people will not like this and it disables google now (actually make sure google now is also off) but if you want better battery life over these features this works for me.
I did the same and the battery consumption is reduced.
But using Better Battery Stats app I found out that my device won't go to sleep because of my WiFi. Wlan_rx_wake is always running. Is it the same for you ? Is there anyway to switch off WiFi automatically.
My config is same as yours.

No problem and thanks for the stuff in dev forum. This is post number 2 so maybe 8 more I'll be able to do it myself. There is still something else going on as I get occasional battery drain. My latest theory is around the method in wich you charge the defy or airplane mode itself. The last time I charged the defy from my pc via USB and I had amazing battery life and used 12% in 8 hours with some text and data and driving I.e. no wifi. Then it went to airplane mode and the next day the battery drain was significantly worse. So either USB charging is better than wall charger for some odd reason or airplane mode triggers some battery heavy process that never dies. I can't see this in the battery stats other than phone idle and screen. Turning off phone does not resolve either.
I'm continuing to investigate optios but my last full charge got 36 hours and had 19% left before I charged.

First of all, thanks for your findings!
I think that I found a workaround for the "something else going on" on the FAQ thread in a post by -=lov=- under http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33159734&postcount=389.
Since I too am not able to post in the dev section yet, I posted myself in the FAQ thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33223114&postcount=398), asking that somebody gives a hint to -=lov=-'s workaround in the dev thread so that Quarx and the others can take notice.
Because I find this workaround important for everybody using the current custom kernel, I copy/paste my post from the FAQ threat to here too:

If someone has battery drain in sleep mode, you can try to do this steps:
1. Reboot phone. Wait for 10-15 minutes.
3. Insert the USB - nothing happens on the phone. (Notifications Debugging and connect via USB does not appear).
4. Take out the USB.
5. Reconnect USB wait minute or so.
6. Take out the USB.
Now device should sleep correctly.

This is a really great workaround against battery drain in sleep mode! :good: :good: :good:
This method works very well for me and is always reproducable!
Before I had about 45 mA/h (2,5 %/h) while deepsleep during day (with 3G on) and about 30 mA/h (1,8 %/h) while deepsleep during night (by using JuiceDefender app, 3G and WIFI are off most of the time).
After appliing this method (which unfortunately has to be done after every reboot), i have just about 25 mA/h (1,5 %/h) while deepsleep during day and about 8 mA/h (0,5 %/h) while deepsleep during night, which are similar to the good numbers I had under Gingerbread.
BTW, using KSM, zRam and Swap don't influence battery drain, at least not significantly, in my experience. I got the above mentioned drains with KSM and zRAM enabled!
However, disabling "settings > location > access to my location" and "google > maps and latitude" options, as posted a couple of times on the development thread, *does* have some impact on battery drain, so I keep these options disabled.
I'm reading the development thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702 for a couple of weeks now and unfortunately it seems that they haven't taken notice of -=lov=-'s great finding yet. I think that there is something about the USB drivers not properly initialized in the Custom Kernels yet, which leads to the much discussed battery drains. I'm quite sure that this should be fixable by Quarx.
Unfortunately, I cannot post in the development thread yet (actually this is my very first post because I found this topic this so important).
Therefore I would like to ask somebody on this FAQ thread to try this method himself and give a hint
on the development thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702, so that the
developers and especially Quarx can take notice and finally fix the battery drain caused by the USB driver
bug (or whatever it is). :fingers-crossed: :highfive: :victory:
Thank you for your support!

Hi @frpriot,
thanks a lot for forwarding the link so quickly to the dev thread! :highfive:
So far there hasn't been a direct response to the USB drivers issue (besides 1 or 2 thanks), but as always there are a lot of issues talked about on this main dev thread at the same time...
So let's wait and hope that the right people pick this issue up! If this shouldn't happen, it might be a good idea to give a hint in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908687 too, since Quarx seems to take part actively there himself. Could you in this case post there too? (I'm now still missing 7 posts to reach the magic 10 first posts... )
BTW, there already are some positive responses to the described workaround in a German forum at http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-ha...el-jb-defy-update-11-10-a-18.html#post4325150 ff.
Cheers

I had a similar problem some time ago, with the phone connected to my home wifi network it would have unusual awake times, draining the battery very quickly.
I found out using the Network Log app (it's in the Play Store) that something on my network keep sending broadcast packets, that the phone would respond, thus the wifi wakelock.
That something was the NetBios name discovery service, enabled by default on Windows, but hardly used anymore, at least on home networks, turning it off solved the issue for me.

Thanks for this post. I have just plugged phone into USB attached to PC for 30 seconds. After only 10 minutes I can see the battery life has improved. See attached screenshot.Just after plugging in USB the battery stops draining at the same rate and the % has stayed the same.
Something gets triggered when the USB cable gets connected that stops the battery draining. I wonder if by charging the phone via the wall charger their is a process triggered that does not get killed when the phone is fully charged. By connecting to USB the process gets killed "nicely" at disconnect?

Hi,
Your kernel is not up to date...
First you should flash last update (update_for_18.10_v3.zip). You can d/l it on Quarx's ftp! After that you will probably have less issues !

Yeah i did clean install it.
and i did try in the settings menu to use 2G always option.. it didnt work out.
well i will innumerate the steps i did -
1. after rooting my device i installed the CWM available on the JB thread 4.1.2
2. Switched off the device and charged it to 100%
3. Took out the battery went into recovery mode and reset and erased everything and erased the cache and dalvic too
and flashed the rom 18.10.2012
4. Upon which i flashed the V3 update as advised and then
5. lastly installed the gapps for JB
6. booted it up...
so far no isssues such as rebooting / loops, camera, wifi, etc with the rom except a few problems..its smooth
1. Always gets heated up when put on charge and talk at the same time or use it (which i think its normal i dont really know)
2. 2G still doesnt work..
3. Battery better after V3 update but not that much as before.. lasts a full day on conservable use.. wifi 3g 3-4 hours max but lasts a day
4. And lastly when put on charge again doesnt charge above 82%
dont know which step have i missed.. :/
love the rom though
Can you suggest me another rom which is as stable as this but with awesome battery life.. i also used a Samsung tab 2 a month back of my brothers it lasted about two days on moderate use.. wifi, 3g, music, games , everything..

18.10 is not just better and newer. It's way better. No lags. With v4, really good battery life. If your battery is not charging above 84, then take off the battery and wipe battery stats. Then you'll be good to go!

Just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone happens to be getting a lot of partial wakelocks without screen on or if your overall battery life has decreased since installing the 4.1.1 OTA. When I first purchased the phone, I had very very few incidents under my battery info where I would have a session awake without the screen on. Post update, seems like I've got a ton of really small wakes with no screen activity. I have turned off Google Now and every GPS/Location setting I could find. Downloaded Better Battery Stats today so I'm going to see if I can get some better info on what's going on, new to the program though and I don't understand most of the info that it reads.
Prior to the update, letting my phone sit overnight I would maybe see a 3 or 4% drop over the course of say six or seven hours. Now I'm seeing a 3 to 4% drop in battery per hour, more if I'm actively using the phone. I'm going to do more testing, specifically overnight to see how it fairs. Just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone else is experiencing any of these issues.

Hmm, might try a factory reset and not installing any apps at all and seeing how it fairs. By chance, do you guys have any of the stock bloatware apps disabled? Not rooted/Frozen, but just disabled via the apps menu? Wondering if perhaps disabling any of them might be a trigger.

Yea i'm getting that. I'm using 13% overnight now vs like 4% before. Not sure about the wakelocks though.
Some random things I've noticed are the blur widget resets itself alot. And the transition to the settings window on the left is laggy. How would one revert back to ICS? Google Now is not that worth it to me and the phone was smooth enough before. I'd take the battery life over the new features.
I did buy a second Razr M for my girlfriend that's still on ICS. I guess I can do a side by side compare this weekend.
I am loving the update.. only issue so far is fire fox crashing..no battery issues. Must be settings guys..

i don't think it is setting i have all my syncs to manual, and i have been noticing a lot worse battery life since the update i would have 18+ hours or so off charger with pretty heavy texting / game / some voice calls. Now i'm not getting close to that. I just disabled the fast dormancy service to see if that helps any, ill post back results
Just did a factory reset today, I'm not going to disable any of the bloatware this time, and I only installed BetterBatteryStats as well as updated all the default apps in the Play Store. Going to see if I get any wakelocks this time around.
Last night, after a period of 6 hours, I had over an hours worth of partial wakelocks from AlarmManager (subheading Phone).
-Matt :good:
I disabled Google Now and my phone used 7% battery over 6 and a half hours. A little bit better.
A factory reset (annoying as it is) helped me considerably. My phone was also seriously laggy before the reset...slow like my old DX on GB, much worse than factory ICS. It finally feels smooth now, like JB should.
Still seeing a lot more wakelocks than on ICS, but it doesn't seem to be draining the battery like it was before the reset. I also removed or disabled a couple of apps that seemed to be serious offenders (Accuweather was one).
Did a reset on mine as well and did not restore from Google backup. Still seeing wakelocks, but as someone noted earlier they don't seem to be draining the battery too much. With that said, the battery does still seem to tick down much faster than on ICS. One thing I did find that helped, although honestly it's not really a solution, is turning off data use when I'm out and about just answering texts and such. If I have data/wifi disabled, I'm getting closer to the battery life that ICS was giving, but then again who wants to go around having to toggle data on and off every time you want to look something up.
-Matt
Is maps showing up on your battery stats and you're not using it? If so, simply open the application. It should say "updated to the latest version" or something like that. If this is happening, this will solve your battery problems.
Happened on my Galaxy Nexus and was happening initially for this phone too. Hope this helps someone.
Modem Fast Dormancy Monitor Service Not Responding.
Me and my wife both updated to KitKat on our Razr M's. I like it so far. The pop up about modem fast dormancy bothers both of use. When you look under battery, it uses more battery than other apps. I force stop it, reboot and it comes right back. A chat on Motorola web site sugested to wipe partition cache. The link that was provide gives the wrong instructions. KitKat using the power and volume keys has changed. They forgot to tell some people. That didn't work! I sent a long email to Motorola telling them that someone messed up or they did this for a reason! I guess if you get mad enough you'll just buy a newer phone. If that one thing is fixed, we would both be happy. The white background in text take some getting use to also. I hope Motorola will help us, but I kind of think Razr M's will be considered OLD! They are betting we will junk them for a new model.

Sorry! My bad. I didn't notice it was closed. Why do they not take old olds off line.
Hello everyone,
My battery drains so fast and I don't know what to do.
It seems an application is open that drains it but I cannot turn it off.

Doubt it but what is true is that you and the OP did not even bother to read the rules or the stickies .
Thousands of battery drain posts all identical you cannot expect members to continually point out the basics that is not what this forum is for .

You might need to close all your running applications. Plus close wifi, sync & others when not in need. Or it could also be your downloaded apps that have advertisements on it. This will automatically lights up your phone even on stand by mode. Try uninstalling them, download ad free apps on google play so you will know what are your installed apps that have ads on it. Hope these help!
Depending on what you are running on your phone, ie; Stock Samsung Official Firmware or Custom Firmware Via CWM etc,
There are many many posts about battery drain & how to solve the problem, I thought the same, but I persisted and found what I needed.
OK, I am sure you know about custom roms, some stable, some not. many have battery drain problems, many dont.
I advise if you are running a custom rom, go to the thread for that rom and read about any problems about battery, if not post in the thread
and ask the person who made the rom for help. battery drain could be anything, which includes a bad flash or installation.
Anyway I hope you get sorted.
Every time i hear somebody suggests To close almost everything that make a smartphone deferent than a common phone I wonder if android has many problems to solve.. A smartphone is smart because of the services that it offers...

Totally agree redcom7, a smartphone is just that, if everything is turned off then what's the point???
Android is not perfect but it is pretty dam good, battery drain issues are more likely in custom roms.
I am running a custom rom which I researched prior to install, now it's in it lasts on average 14 - 19 hrs longer than the Official Firmware
and that is with everything running.
You are right everything does not need turned off, just a bit of common sense mixed with research and everything should be fine. :good:
I am running omega rom.
The thing is that when I flashed this rom it didn't have battery issues. But now it does!
So I thought an application drains the battery and I wiped everything but it still drains it.
The app is called media as you can see on my screenshot.
I really don't know what to do...
I wiped battery stats and it seems better now...
I'm thinking of changing kernel. Would that help?

I m just wondering to find whats the normal battery timing of Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 ?
My phone battery timing is about a day with normal usage.
Its 4.1 J.B
And I also want to find out some new tips and tricks.
Thanks.
(I m a new member)
Depends on use. Stock I only get about 7 hours with my use. With tweaking I usually double my battery life.

You have the media scanner bug. There are various solutions but the most common one is to reformat your SD card.
You can stop it happening temporarily by force closing media scanner but it will return when you reboot the phone.

ROM Sotmax Ultimate V8
Kernel Yank555.lu-V2.7a
'Rescan media root' solved a problem I was having with battery drain from media.
Also, I also used to think that shutting down some android services was defeating the purpose of having a smart phone. Unfortunately, I was losing 20-30% battery when at work for about 5 hours. Recently I've started switching off data while working (I can't use my phone when working anyway) and now my drain over the same amount of time would be around 5%.

Thread closed, post in the Q & A section next time.
I opening this thread especially for discuss AOKP nightlies, not for Milestone. I did not find separated thread here in XDA for nightly versions of AOKP. I think AOKP deserves a thread here.
To keep clean the AOKP Milestone thread, I suggest to post here any aokp nightly related issue/question.
If you want to post here, please do not forget to report which nightly version you are using currently. In this way I guess we can help each others more efficiently.
Latest nightlies can be found on AOKP website.
About battery time
We was discussed about battery times about nightlies on AOKP Milestone thread. I guess we can continue here as first discuss.
Please send your statistic and your opinion also about your battery time with your current nightly.
AOKP 2013-06-15
Drains the battery under Process "Android OS" about 2-3% / hour that I think too much in idle.
Even if I use my phone, (I mean screen is on) Process: "Android OS" always eats more battery than screen.. I guess its not normal.
AOKP Milestone 1
2% / 8hours in idle - My best results so far..
You can post here your results, please don't forget to tell your version, because its important.

obviously milestone version will be better than nightlies.
i plan to flash back milestone one. since i dont use the new things in the nightlies.
the only think i notice to be different is the auto brightness customization and the ribbon.
the android OS drain is too high.

I created this thread directly beside the AOKP milestone that actually here. I see in this section many another roms also. Why is AOKP not a custom rom? Sorry I don't realy understand. If AOKP Milestone is here, why not right this section for the AOKP nightlies?
If i started this thread in a bad section, I'd like to ask some administrator to move this thread to the right place if possible.
Sorry/thanks

Hi Guys
Strange things just happened.
Im still on nightly with my phone. i have some battery drain by android OS.
BUT
on my nexus the milestone version runs. Its already works good more than a month. Yesterday i noticed the same thing. Android OS drains the battery, more than the screen itself.
I started to find applications that can drain the battery through android os.
No luck. Im sure its not any installed application from playstore.
It must be the Google Apps itselt that the same on my both device.. Between gapps im sure 'currents' is a big battery killer. first i uninstalled and got better result, but still androis os drains the batteries on my both device.. Im pretty sure they are updating themselves without any question. so this battety drain not comes with aokp nightlies, but google apps. and that more frightening: together android os battery drain i noticed mediaserver also works even if i dont watch any video and my phone is muted.... what if google spying on us??? very strange.. I'll try to use my tablet without any connection, just for a test...
Android OS secrvice alway was around 2-5% from a full battery.. even if the device is idle!!!
do you guys experiencing the same behaviour by android os??

This threads offends me. I have taken time to create an aosp roms dicussion thread for discussing all aosp roms, yet you fail to utilize the search function to see if previous thread already exist and open a thread like this. I also posted a link to my thread post #7 which you disregarded. Here it is again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176223
Mods, please leave this thread here. We need a place to discuss the nightlies.

My grand grandfather was an astronaut!
Good news!
I did find the problems!
its about google apps....
i uninstalled google currents
and disabld everything in the location settings.
now my battery drain stopped!
in the last 6 hours of idle, drained only 1%!
it seems much better now.
Im still on 06-15 niggtly.
Same thing solved my problem on nexus 7.
So I guess this battery drain not come from any aokp build! If you want, you can install back the latest nightly (imo same stable like milestone was, however i dont use the built in lock screen and i saw peoples having problem with it.).
good luck!

Hi, I have high android OS usage even though I clean install the milestone one.
Like u said, the android OS usage is always Slightly higher than screen usage.
Better batter stats doesn't show any partial or kernel wake lock.
I suspect it may be the auto brightness.
I have mine completely customized to my own values.
Maybe it's causing the phone to constant check the light sensor.
I have disable the auto brightness and will check how it behaves.
hi
on my device auto brightness fully disabled i using constant 1% brightness because i alwasys inside... I think you dont need to affraid because of that.
i guess its google apps
go to application and check google services thats already updated. you can delete update.. so i think google services can change in the background.
i also started use better battery stats. i'll let you know if i have some news.

Recently came over from CM, needed more customization. AOKP has been great, but has a couple of weird bugs on my device. Most notably, occasionally the multitasking pane has no quit all button. However, all I have to do is leave and immediately reopen the multitasking. Doesn't affect much, but still a minor annoyance. Still, having a blast playing around with all the customization, I feel like I'm just scratching the surface.

I had the opposite experience. I tried cyanogen mod yesterday.
And was underwhelmed by the lack of things in cm. it lose to aokp in so many ways.
But there are 2 things cm does better than aokp, the torch toggle that leaves a notification in the status bar to be turn off.
And remap volume button to control media volume instead of ringer volume.
The multitasking plane has a kill all button if you enable it in rom settings under general.
I do not face bug where it randomly disappear. If issue persist, you could try reinstall rom.
Fast summary about battery drain problem
After I did try different variations of roms and modem versions (basebands), I must say that: nothing is draining the battery because of AOKP, just looks like...
I feel my battery keeps a little longer with XXELLA baseband than XXEMC2.
In my opinion it's just a bad battery statistics that misleading us.. Somehow in the battery log "Android Os" almost always comming up to the first place, even if that is impossible and not logical.
Just for an example:
Charge up your phone to 100%, then do not switch off your phone.
Switch off everything that can eat extra battery (bluetooth, wifi, mobile data, nfc, gps)
Try to watch movie from your sd card or do anything to drain your battery to approx. 80%.
You will see in the battery log: Screen or/and media is the biggest consumer of the battery.
Leave your phone in idle for 6-8 hours long, then check again the battery log.
Probably your battery losts another 1-2%, but Android OS will be the bigger consumer again, thats logically not possible...
If the battery lost 20% because of the screen, and another 1-2% because of idle: Android OS can not come above the screen time with total 1-2% of consumption.. So its false, we dont need to talking about. Its a battery log bug. I guess the very high numbers of kernel wakelocks mislead the calculations of the battery stat. I also noticed that my screen time changed to less. Certain parts of the battery log was missing or/and incorrect: I did not see screen in the list two times, and once I did see bluetooth as bigger consumer (wih 68 hours!!!) even if i did not use any bluetooth connection. I did try battery calibration - not helps.
Any Nightly version of AKOP don't eats more battery than Milestone!!!
6-16 Nightly is stable on my device, no random restarts or any malfunction, superuser works better, camera bug also fixed
Only thing that I noticed as difference is between basebands:
On my device XXELLA eats less battery [0,25%/hour] in idle, than XXEMC2 [up to ~1,25%/hour - variable sometimes less]
I living in the European Union, so I can't suggest to everyone to use the mentioned version of baseband, But if you notice more battery consumption in idle, good idea to try another (maybe older) baseband version that suggested in your area.
Headphone Volume/Distortion fix
If someone is noticed that: AOKP's headphone output much louder(and distorted) than Originally SGS3 with stock rom, Here is a quckfix:
Use any root explorer (I did use AntTek Explorer - works good and free), make sure it has root privileges.
Go to: System>etc >sound where is a file located, m0
Open the file for edit
Search the section that starts <device name="headphone">
In this section you will see another two row:
<ctl name="Left Output Mixer DAC Volume" val="7"/>
<ctl name="Right Output Mixer DAC Volume" val="7"/>
Set the values from 7 to 4
Save the file
Restart your phone
For me personally not necessary to pumping out my brain with headphones, so I rather need quality sound than high volume. I always using Poweramp and after the change I noticed: I can boost more bass and treble without distorting the sound...
Overally I'm not satisfied with the sound quality of s3 (my old galaxy nexus was much better imo), but with this settings, sounds much better for my ears... If someone is more audiofil, just like me: I suggest to try this settings.
