Launcher force closing: java.lang.outofmemoryerror - Galaxy Note II General

I've had my N7100 for 2 weeks now and love everything about except this force closing issue. Basically touchwiz launcher and nova launcher both force close randomly with the following error: java.lang.outofmemoryerror
Apex does not show the problem when the option to keep it in memory is selected. I really want to use nova because it is so much smoother than apex and more functional than touchwiz, but this force close happens 2 or 3 times per day.
I can prevent this from happening if I use the developer option to only allow 4 apps in memory, but unused memory is wasted memory and it causes unnecessary redraws of the launcher and reopening of apps. Any solutions or reasons why this would be happening? Am I the only one reporting the issue?

Swipe to change home screens not working all the time!

Ok so this is a weird problem.
90% of the time the phone works 100% perfectly.
Sometimes when I try to swipe between homescreens the phone does nothing...its not locked up because the capacitive buttons work, and tapping the bottons on the bottom will let me switch home screens without a problem, it is JUST swiping that wont work.
A reboot of the phone makes swiping work again...any ideas? This is super weird.
Are you using the default Gingerbread launcher? I heard a lot of people were having trouble with that at the outset. Haven't heard as much about it lately, but I'm not sure if that's because it's been fixed or just because everyone's either learned to live with it or switched launchers.
Back when I was using the stock launcher, I experienced that a few times too. I also experienced other glitches and oddities, like difficulty in moving icons on my home screen or sometimes when trying to move icons, they would disappear and appear instead in a folder. Very random stuff. Anyway, the screen swiping issue also showed up a few times.
I've since switched to ADW launcher and haven't looked back.
Gingerbread is glitchy. That much is clear. Hopefully Google will issue more bug fixes soon.
Training am using the stock launcher. I really like the 3d app drawer and it is buggy in launcher pro. How is it in adw?

I find ADW to be thoroughly awesome. You can give the free ADW.Launcher a try, but it's missing a few features that are in the paid version ADWLauncher EX, including the 3D app drawer. Unfortunately, you don't get much of a trial period now that Google has reduced their refund window to 15 minutes, but you ought to be able to test out the app drawer and play around with the other features at least a bit in that time if you want.
I too vouch for ADW. The free version itself is quite an excellent launcher. I used to be an avid LauncherPro fan back on my Vibrant, but on the Nexus S, ADW is smooth as butter. The ability to customize your icons on the home screen (which is only available in the paid LP version) is great too. Virtually no hiccups whatsoever swiping through screens.
Either case, it's tons better than stock launcher.
I have the same exact problem and I'm all stock. I usually reboot all apps and programs using FastReboot from the market and it goes back to normal. I agree that Gingerbread still has its glitches still =[
So if o pay for adw launcher the 3d drawer works fine?

Who knows? Download it and see. All I can tell you is it works great for me.
The stock launcher is buggy as hell. I use launcher pro and it runs flawlessly.

The 3d app drawer (called 4d app drawer in adw) runs horribly on the nexus s. If you plan on changing launchers, adw is good, but the only decent app drawer to select for it is horizontal fling.
Adw holds up relatively well now on the nexus s (ran like arse on 2.3.1). Sometimes however adw will all of a sudden freeze though. You think your phone is frozen but it's not, the launcher has just slowed down to a crawl. The launcher buttons at the bottom work fine when this issue occurs, but swiping of screens will appear not to work.
If you get this problem in adw, you have to go into applications and find adw, then force close it (it doesn't appear as running under task killers, so you can't kill it from there). It will then run fine again. I have had this happen a couple of times with adw and I used to think I had to reset the phone. Was a pain.
The stock launcher problem you have stated in this thread I have encountered as well, which is why I moved to adw. While the stock launcher appears to use acceleration in the app drawer, which i love too, the regular launcher home screens are basically unusable at this stage. I hope they fix it soon, but it likely wont be for a while.
This happened on my G1, my Nexus One and my Nexus S.
I finally wised up and installed LauncherPro (on my N1 and NS) and the problem doesn't happen anymore. In fact, LauncherPro is way faster than the default launcher.
The age-old (and largely pointless) debate between LP and ADW aside, the OP already said LP didn't work well for him.
Hit Menu > Manage Applications > Running > Menu > Show Cached Processes > Launcher > Stop > Home
Swiping will work again after that, until the next time the bug occurs. Quicker than rebooting though.

I have launcher pro and it works fine. I just really like the 3d drawer which didnt really work well in launcher pro.
I'll just deal for now that problem comes up like once a week so its not a huge deal
Wow that worked...thanks

Having them same issue. Google better fix this soon!!

launcher pro vs ADW?
I want to get something new too but I don't want to customize my phone TOO much because of the steep learning curve and having to remember how things work.
Anyone know which of the two is most similar to the stock launcher?

Annoying! Vibrant screen seems to load all icons when coming out of other application

This just recently started happening and its so fkin annoying, for some reason when I come out of other applications by pressing home button the screen comes up black with only my wallpaper and seems to load all icons which takes 6-7 seconds. Anyone else experiencing this?
This always happens when I come out of the music player and web browser other applications too but these 2 are confirmed.
What launcher are you using? It might be caused by the launcher being terminated by the system and then having to launch "on demand" again (hence the delay). You might check to see if the launcher has a option to "keep in memory" or some such. I have seen this before on other phones and it was the launcher.
^ is correct. Odd that this is happening though. Do you have a ton going on? Find the feature to keep in memory as suggested. I use ADW EX and this has never happened. If I switch back and forth between launchers it will (obviously).
Are you using a task killer that is killing your launcher? I agreed with the above, it sounds like a laucher problem
Use the back button to exit out of apps when you are done. You are probably running out of memory from opening too many things and the system is killing the launcher.

It sounds like something is killing the launcher. Make sure that you aren't using to much RAM, because the system will kill your launcher if you don't have enough RAM for what your doing.

[Bug] App drawer empty after exiting app

Hi all. I have encountered a bug on the stock launcher, where you launch the app from the drawer and after using the app, you exit and return to the drawer, the drawer is blank and only has the home icon...
Mostly happen when I return from memory intensive apps like modern combat 2
Sent from my Nexus S
Don't know the reason for this, but used to happen to me as well.
I'm assuming you're rooted and are running a CM7 based ROM, so just go to CyanogenMod settings -> Performance -> Lock home in memory.
I got the same thing going on too sometimes. In addition, sometimes when I exit an app the home screen(s) are blank -with just my background & nothing else. It acts exactly like the blank app drawer does. Everything returns after a few seconds though. I'm maybe thinking that it has something to do with low available RAM??
I'm not rooted, stock 2.3.4
I might be going the rooted route here soon to try & resolve this issue, along with my reboot issue during calls.
The launcher is being killed from ram (memory) because the application you are using is requiring too much.
Like the other poster said you can check "keep launcher in memory" in some roms and also in launcher settings for some launchers. This however is not a full guarantee that it will not be purged.

I'm seeing this as well. A reboot tends to clear it up for a while but it eventually starts happening again after a few days to a week. Stock 2.3.4 i9020T.

Launcherpro redraw fix

I found this fix on a another forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856385
This problem was driving me nuts so I tried it on my Epic and it's worked great so far. Give it a try if you're having similar issues with Launcherpro or other memory intensive launcher like ADW. You'll be glad you did!
Thanks for the tip!

Didn't seem to do anything for me. Though this issue was really apparent in ef02. Back on ec05, not so much. Anywho TE didn't give me any confirmation. So I don't even know if it worked.

When TE doesn't give you an error message after hitting enter, its usually a good thing I actually did not have the issues w/ redrawing of the homes screen on EF02, but the EXPERIMENTAL 3D App Drawer does give me an issues on GB, were it doesn't scroll properly, it kinda jumps from the top of the drawer to the bottom, not allowing one to select any apps in b/w. I was hoping for this to fix that issue, but it did not....thanks anyways!
There are some additional tips on this forum like setting memory usage and home screen caches to light. Also, disabling auto rotation helps a lot.
http://www.launcherpro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2652&hilit=Redraw
I attached a picture of my settings. I also have 3D drawer enabled, droid hack disabled, auto rotate off, memory usage preset and home screen cache type to light. I have five 6 column, 7 row homescreens loaded with widgets and shortcuts, and static wallpaper. I have easily 150+ apps on my phone. It used to redraw 50-70% of the time when exiting an app, now it's smooth as butter. It's totally changed my phone experience for the better.
I am on an EC05 rom.

On EC05 I actually didn't have any issues at all, but its on EF02 that Im having the 3D issues. I duplicated your settings but it seems to be an issue w/ GB cuz its still no good...thanks anyways, again lol
I'm confused about the memory usage settings and which settings are best. Wouldn't higher memory usage yield better results?

This seemed to work for GoLauncher as well, it is nice not to have to wait 5 seconds for the launcher to reload every time I browse the web with multiple tabs or play a game for a while.
I'm not sure if it is my imagination but I think my battery life has gotten worse.. I will give it some more time to make sure.
I had this problem and my phone constantly vibrating like something was Force Closing, on stock Launcher. Before I rooted I went to Samsung recovery, and cleared all caches 5 times. And everything was fine, even when I redownloaded LauncherPro using LauncherPro widgets like friend feeds, and calander. Youtube widget and sence analog clock.

Even Go sometimes has this issue. The problem is the memory management is killing the background cache. The only real fix I found was to not have as many constant apps running in the background.
thanks for the fixes.
People still use Launcher Pro?
Go Launcher EX surpasses it in every way and its free,Zeam launcher isnt bad eather but not as rich on featureas and themes.

Agreed, the primary reason I use it is for the app drawer folders, makes it much easier to organize/find apps.
The only problem with Go Launcher (other than the previous reloading issue) is with the car dock, it restarts every time it is plugged/unplugged from the dock.
Agree with using Go Launcher EX as well. I jumped from LauncherPro too and never looked back. The devs of Go Launcher EX are constantly updating it and squeezing out the bugs.

[Q] Launcher redraw ?

I have latest 20G update on my D802. I'm using stock LG launcher. Lately, I get quick launcher redraw, afte unlocking my phone. Weather widget and couple of icons redraw with a "blink". Is there any solution to this? Anybody else expiriencing the same issue?
If the entire launcher is redrawing then it might be getting kicked out of memory. Some 3rd party launchers have an option to remain in memory, can you try one of those and tell me whether those launchers also redraw.
Sent From Capsule Corp.
I tried Nova launcher and it doesn't redraw, but transition animations are choppy (micro stutters, but they are smooth when using live wallpaper), so I decided to stick with stock launcher. As I said, it's not that entire launcher is redrawing, but two folders and 4x1 default weather widget.
I have never used stock kk, so it could be an issue with the update. Try clearing cache/data for the LG apps via settings, Apps->All.

I had the same problem on 20d. Got tired of it and I use apex now. It never redraws and animation is smoother. Free ram is also much more with apex.
Too bad cuz i liked stock lg launcher.

Yesterday, I made a factory data reset, after updating to 20H firmware on my D802. Still, this launcher redraw issue is present and it's really bothering me. If I have to do something on the fly and just after unlocking my phone, this redraw happens and whole interface stutters for second or two.
Same here since 20G... Happy to see that I'm not alone... Again a buggy update...
Having the same issue with 20c, nothing changed after a couple of flashes as well.
Been using the stock launcher for 1 year and it always redraw. Finally installed Nova last week and there is no more launcher redraw issue.
I guess I'm lucky; not a single redraw here, not even that one when switching from portrait to landscape (or vice versa). 20H.
I also had the same problem with stock LG launcher but I`ve read somewhere that the problem is gone when there is no folders on launcher.
I had 3 folders and when I removed them the problem is gone
Is anyone with the problem having folders on homescreen? If you do try to remove them and see what would happen
well, actualy folders and widget are indeed redrawing and I can confirm that I have folders...BUT I had some on previous rom I it worked flawlessly...
I just removed one folder that was on my home screen. Lets see if there will be some redrawing now.
Interesting, never thought about folders and redrawing. Got 3 of them tho. Plus 4 widgets (if we count clock). Still no issues, eh...

Never had any folders - still redraws every once in a while... Have 4 widgets though...
For the lag it seems that it occurs when I press home after switching from a band to another or from an antenna to another
Whell, last night I removed folder from the home screen and I still gor redraws, so it must be bad coding in LG Home launcher.
After KK update I've had launcher redraws even after killing all background apps, so I had them hundreds times every day. After updating to "H" release all redraws gone. Not any single redraw.
It is far better with 20h for sure but still having some lags
I have 20H firmware and redraws all the time. Even after factory reset.
