xperia play sound quality - Xperia Play General

i got the r800x and the stock sound on them is all right both through the headphones and speakers, but after the beats audio driver was installed from play store here: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=beats+audio+installer To me they sound better then stock and xloud and trust me cuz i have a cheap pair of $10 jvc gummies from wally world and even they sound amazing. Nothing to my friends Solo HD though but yaa download it....
and all credit goes to the creator of the app im just want to spread it.... And plus you get the little B for beats in the notification bar when headphones are pluged in, and that makes "dum" smartphone users really Jelly if you know what i mean.

Obviously. Xloud doesn't do anything when headphones are plugged in. Moot point

xLoud makes music louder. In speakers.
Boo.

Great Audio Playback on Xperia Play

I am really impressed by the audio quality of the Xperia play. I originally bought it last year purely for running emulators but have recently started using it for audio and video playback. I have been surprised by the great quality of the audio playback. When i started listening to my MP3's with the stock audio player/headphones i had a double take. Everything sounded really crisp, the clarity/bass was really good and the stereo seperation was really noticible. I was playing the same tracks that i listened to over and over again on other devices but it was as if i was wearing a £300 pair of headphones as the detail suddenly stood out.
I have bought and swappped various phones in the past and currently have an Iphone 5 as well. None of my previous handsets including the Iphone 4,Galaxy S3 as well as the current Iphone 5 can touch this phone for audio playback using the stock headphones. The stereo seperation in particular is so much better than the Iphone. When i looked at reviews for the Xperia Play GSMarena mentioned that there was lots of crosstalk with the Play however i don't agree, i can actually notice the stereo better on this handsetmore than any MP3 player i've ever had.
Does anyone else agree, I know its subjective. This is the only Sony phone i've purchased and was wondering if all the Xperia devices have a similiar sound chip.
Wow that's really good to hear !
Your right it does have superior sound quality. The speakers are proper loud and crisp when played without earphones,
I agree, it's the best audio I've gotten from any media player I've currently tried. For as long as my Play functions, it will always live as my music player. With Xloud, even the speakers are brilliant, which is a rare plus
Actually, the Galaxy S and SIII use Wolfson DAC like the iPhone, and when coupled with Voodoo compatible kernel it is very good sounding. See included attachment.
However, I have to say the Xperia does have excellent sound quality and decent camera as expected from Sony. I do like the smooth sound signature.
Either a Play or Samsung Vibrant would make a good 'music player phone' without spending too much. In the end the earphone you're using is the still most important factor. I can't justify using stock eabuds no mattee how good the source is. From this list of earbuds, I have the Blox TM7 and the Sennheiser MX580: http://www.inearmatters.net/p/earbuds-roundup.html. The MX580 is very good sounding, I think its recently discontinued though. Though earbuds do have very high diminishing qualities compared to larger headphones.

i too agree i have beats and xloud installed on my play and compared to my friends ipod, iphone4s and my others S3 they can not touch my phone especially with the speakers i just drown out there phones... and my brothers droid x sound through the head phones sound degreated withe the same exact song with same bitrate.....overal this phone is a media beast
Was looking for xperia pro forum and came across this thread.
My xperia pro would be coming in a day or two. Will it have the same audio quality as that of xperia play?
I also agree, the quality is very good, and even without Xloud the volume is pretty loud.

'Twould be quite silly to implement harmful software into stock firmware, wouldn't it? xLOUD should be harmless
I hadn't really thought about it but I suppose the quality is good for a smartphone.
Well, the sound in my XP is not pure
I think it is ROM related
I love the audio too, but I wish they would have an srs or Bongiovi sound plugin that you could download from the store.

Agree, compare to my old gaming phone, n-gage, that has good audio playback too.

Yes !
Though for my enjoyment, all of my previous phones have had great audio quality. (nokia 6151, nokia N81 8GB and now Xplay)
The sound quality with builtin speakers was horrible at first (I listen heavy stuff, sounds were messed up and muffed and it hurted my ear) but woth 2.3.4 XLOUD its "seems like" xperia play "manipulates" songs better
My only complaint is that using anything else than stock earphones with stock eqvalisator setup sounds mediocre at best and you cant tweak them by yourself... Only preset values.
me like audio xperia 2
personally i think it has the best sound with the stock earphones and also with bluetooth headset the sound is incredible.
ive had many mp3 players before creative ,zune player, samsung galaxy player(wich isnt bad either)
and together with the poweramp mediaplayer for me this is the best music player sofar imo.
glad to know there are others who feel the same way i do:good:

Output volume sucks

So I've recently been using my tablet to play music onto my nice dj style headphones. But output volume and quality is absolutely horrendous. I have to be at full volume to get and reasonably level sound, and then when I'm at that level, everything is very distorted. On my one X which has some beats eq thing, sound is wonderful and much louder. Maybe this is just a problem with stock Android, but I need to find some way to get much higher quality and more importantly louder music. I've tried a few mods available here but they don't seem to do much.

What mods have you tried. I use awesome beats on my galaxy nexus. If not that trickster mod app has a setting to make the volume high. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I have my galaxy nexus stock and rooted.

I haven't used much except for DSP, but the audio is just difficult to have it loud. I've found external speakers BT or through audio jack is the only way to go.
Be careful what you try because I've read about people blowing their speaker trying to increase volume. That being said volume+ from the play store worked when it wasn't fighting the other sound mods I had installed. Pimp my ROM app. has some flashable zips that helped. Bottom line its one of the sacrifices that kept the price of the N7 low. Better the speaker to be mediocre rather than the screen. I bought some ear buds and if I want to play it loud for the neighbors I jack in to a stereo. Also a set of desktop computer speakers (sub and two bookshelf) work great with tablets
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I use my N7 speaker to listen to music and get quite surprised and how loud it gets and don't notice any distortion. So I'm not experiencing what you are. Maybe I'm just easily pleased and aren't as passionate about audio quality as others
Sorry to say this but, it will never sound good. Not even with sound mods. The sound chip inside the N7 is just really, really bad. I've tried it with a pair of $900 Shure headphones and nothing can save this thing.

An app to hugely improve sound quality through headphones!

Ok guys i love my XZ but one thing i didnt like is the headphones sound quality as i am a bit of an audiophile..It generally lacks bass and volume..But more of bass really as volume was ok.
So i came upone an app called JETAUDIO from team jet. And i cant tell you how much it improves the sound..You just need a good pair of headphones with low impedence around 16ohm and senn or klipsch which are around 20-30$ kind of headphones..And then go into the equalizer of this app and just try out different settings and pre-amp too which boosts volume levels..keep it till u dont find it distorting.
Just try the trail version which has a 10 band eq..the full version has 20! and different effects too..This is probably the greatest sound app out there!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEwMiwiY29tLmpldGFwcGZhY3RvcnkuamV0YXVkaW8iXQ..
Your XZ music will change!!! :fingers-crossed:
If someone wants ill post my EQ settings
Get siyah kernal and then install Stweaks..... checkout hardware audio boost.... check and revert

This doesnt require anything..and siyah is only for Samsung as far as i know.
If you think there is something wrong or lacking with the audio quality of the Xperia Z then you are used to an extremely coloured sound. Most equalizers only really screw up the sound. The output on the Xperia Z is very clean, balanced and neutral, as it should be.
I use these in-ears, for the record.

$350 for in-ears.. considering you can get much better (compact) headphones for a lower price which would also boost the whole sound experience a bit, I'd think twice about a purchase.
To automatically assume that these in ear headphones are inferior to over the ear headphones is a little presumptuous and in this case very wrong. Yes it's a lot of money but they can and do dump all over many headphones both in ear and over ear.

What would you say then for 1000+ $ inears? I agree, it abnormal for something like that to cost that much, but there really are difference, and you can't get that results with amps or software tweaks.... If you're on the move constantly and like listening to music, then investing in pair of HQ inears is less painful . Personally, you can hear the differences between 100,300,500$ laud and clear. Haven't got a chance to listen some of those 1k$ sadly :/
When it comes to custom in ear monitors you are paying a premium for the fact that they are hand made and that sometimes they don't turn out right and need to be re-made. If you have the money and can hear the difference they are well worth it. The comfort and not having to mess around with those little rubber/foam gromits is a major bonus to anyone who uses headphones a lot.

Well the point was , that this app produces better bass and punch (which is def lacking in XZ) with nicely priced earphones as well...you dont need 300$ ones as not everyone invests that much on earphones.
I totaly agree with Ambroos, as I am amateur audiophile as well. XZ have great balanced output without coloration or bass pumping, exactly as it should be. This output is closer to real deal than with almost any other smartphone I tried, and trust me I did try lot of them.
For the reference, I am using Jabra Revo and AKG Quincy Jones in ear for my listening.

I don't buy into this moronic audiophile nonsense that music has to be "as close to the original as possible" bull crap.
I like my music to sound a certain way, and no amount of cash thrown at headphones or lossless sound formats will change the fact that my ears prefer music with high bass, high treble and almost no middle, certainly not how the artist may of expected me to hear it but who gives a rats bottom what the artist wants.
I paid for my album i'll listen to it how I like it thank you

I must say the audiophiles (in general) have a point, but so do you biffsmash. You should listen to your music whatever the hell way you want. Therefore I am really happy with my setup XZ + MDR 1R (thanks Sony!).Apparently both these devices produce a clear, balanced, uncolored sound. I'm not an audiophile, no time to be, but I just like music. Thanks to audiophiles I know that my setup is pretty decent and that I'm getting proper quality sound.
I will use the app to try out different equaliser settings for my different genres of music. Probably'll implement them in my PowerAmp equalizer then. So thanks!
This is better than Poweramp
Ethan/Biff
I don't think anyone is trying to tell you what to do, it's down to individual taste (and budget)
Apps like this and PowerAmp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5tYXhtcHouYXVkaW9wbGF5ZXIiXQ..) can make a cheap pair of headphones sound pretty good.
The thing is, good sound quality is not about punch and bass, neither are reputable $300 headphones about punch and bass. It's about true to life reproduction of live sound. Hope that makes sense.

audio quality (headphones) stock walkman app vs others?

has anyone compared the stock walkman player on the z with other apps from the market eg play music or poweramp? both on flat settings, i'm wondering if there is any noticeable audio difference via headphones?
I find with clear audio enabled on the walkman sounds better than poweramp but, i like the poweramp play wayyy better so i used the MFX settings so then i get poweramp and the sony system sound
do you know if the walkman app supports gapless playback? i know poweramp, neutron and play music all do, but would prefer the stock player if possible
Nope, there is a tiny gap with the stock player.
although stock music player didnt have gap-less play mode, but the sound enhancement really amazing and too good for having it.
Since Android 4.2 has gapless playback as a system feature, I am hoping Walkman will do gapless once we get our system update.
Most likely, Sony makes heavy use of what is already available in Android and works hard to implement as much as possible. Things like the extended notification controls are a great example.

Agreed they are rubbish. Only looked the part. Using it with a pair of Sennheiser CX 980s sounds immaculate..Good quality Headphones don't make it sound any better than it already is they just realease it's full potential. And the stock headphones hold it back way to much. And incase nobodys aware I'm sure some my not know.... GmusicFS when downloaded allows you to stream your playmusic through the walkman app.

Well the stock headphones are just that, stock headphones. Considering you get them with your phone they're actually not bad. If you think Beats stuff sounds better you're either someone who only cares about bass or an idiot in my opinion.

without wanting to take this off topic, i agree beats audio is just a cheap gimmick. it is just a simple non adjustable eq setting. you can have it on or off. you like it or lump it.
i do wish sony would sort gapless out for their devices. they make fantastic walkmans. but in all the years they have been making daps gapless is nowhere to be seen. i could get an app to do it for me but would much prefer ro use the stock walkman player to do everything for me
I never care about the stoxk headphones, ever since I got my hand on my XZ, I pair it with my Klipsch s4 and it never let me down.
I use poweramp most of the time, but XZ walkman produce much better sound quality compare to my old XperiaPlay.

should I stop buying galaxy phones because of poor music quality?

I donot know if it is something wrong with the galaxy lineup or maybe android but I am having poor music quality on my phones I had a galaxy s3 and now a galaxy note 3 .Tried nearly every player poweramp, winamp, player pro and even rooted the s3 to try viper4android but the music always sucks either too flat or too noisy .should I try a sony device or the music on android isnot rich and crips (os problem).
I tried the new Adapt sound in note 3 with the default player and nothing new.
I use the bundled samsung headsets (tell me if I should replace them).
Thanks in advance ☺.
Are u talking about the sound with or without headphones?
Anyway I think the sound is one of the best u can find on any cell phone, there are just a few better (htc m8 4 example). If u are talking headphones I would personally advice anyone to switch away from in ear headphones (sound always bad to me) and take some real headphones instead. Hope that helps in any way
With headphones .

Bundled headphones are rather poor/flat for music - I still use those sometimes as a headset since the controls and mic work (while other models of headsets do not) but for music I use separate headphones.
I use the earpiece from my HTC one and it sounds nice.
Only caveat is the music player of touchwiz is slow and dumb.

good music quality achived but with issues
I tried apollo + dsp manager yesterday with the bundled headphones and the sound quality was greatly improved but the installation of the dsp manager messed up the default music player and the system as they become not responding when I get notifications during apollo playback . Maybe I will try a cm based rom any recommendation for good ones .
Thanks.
Head on over to hi fi org. Music, get a separate player like a Fiio x3 or x5. My rig is an x3 with vmoda m100 headphones, powered by a portaphile 627 amp. Day and night totally. I hate carrying both around but sound on phones are anemic at best.

You also may opt for a ROM with Viper Audio, but seriously you need better headphones first.
As others have said I would agree
1) Standard in ear headphones are not very good quality with any phone.
2) Android doesn't seem to be oriented towards prioritising high quality audio.
Having said that there are a number of steps that are likely to improve audio quality depending on how important and how much money you're willing to spend.
My advice would be first get a decent over the ear quality headphone.
Then get your music in lossless format e.g flac files not low bit rate mp3.
My personal favourite music player is Neutronmp.
Then if you still want more and are willing to spend more then the advice to head over to headfi given earlier is going to lead to an excellent source of advice.
Likely advice, again referred to earlier would involve investing in a separate dac / headphone amp.
Many available at different prices, I use Fiio E17 via usb otg cable and usb audio player Pro
