AT&T Lumia 920 exclusive for 6 Months - Windows Phone 8 General

This should pretty much kill all the rumors about a Verizon 922 or 9XX or a T-Mobile 910.

6 month later it better come out with a quad core or this is DOA. I wouldn't be caught upgrading my phone to something that's 6 months old.

I don't wanna beat a dead horse, but this is going to be disastrous for Nokia....let's see, AT&T has people that bought the L900, the Titan, Titan 2, and Focus 2...throw in the people who bought SG3's...sprinkle in the folks that bought iPhone 5's...now where are all these people who want this phone going to come from? Is Nokia really that stupid to think everyone is going to leave their carrier for this phone, especially when AT&T didn't push a single update for WP7...?

You do realize that ATT offered something very substantial to get exclusive rights for 6 months...right?

...and this helps WP8 how?

It will help Nokia.
My point was that ATT PAID nokia in order to get the exclusive rights.
No OEM gives exclusiveness out of the goodness of their heart.
And it will probably have nothing to do with the amount of L920 ATT is gonna sell.

That's fine. I just hope Nokia doesn't ***** in 4 months that this, like the L900, wasn't a commercial success.

Part of the problem is Microsoft.
They shouldn't have gone out and said "Windows phone 8 is not available for you guys with 7.5"
And you know why? because most people are dumb. They have no idea what the 7.8 update really is. Basically, the 7.8 update will make the current lumia phones get the maximum out of their hardware. I for one, will probably skip this first line of WP8 handsets and lay quietly with my lumia 800 for a few years. Quad cores will show up by then.

This.
They should have said that ALL winPhone will get an update with limited functions perhaps, just like other companies (*cough Apple *cough)...People would have continued to buy wp devices and others would have bought the first gen of wp8 phones.
But....
This fact really is restraining a lot of ppl from buying wp all in all...fearing they may remain without update after 1/2 years, perhaps?
I, for example, am starting to think to switch to android for this.

hhahahahahahahaha
and you think android is gonna be different? phones out there get released and months later there is no support for them. Only flagships like SG3 or HTC one X will get support for a maximum of 2 years.
Lumia will probably be the longest living line as far as support is concerned.

I feel them on the leaving the platform part, I'm looking at my HD2, which was abandoned by Microsoft, now my HD7 will join that pile....as much as I dislike Samsung, the Ativ is my only shot IF my carrier gets it.

This phone looks great, but i think I'm feeling the HTC 8X line that is coming to AT&T more. The HTC ones just look...sleeker? I don't know, maybe is the shape of the 920.

The problem with android is its so segmented. As soon as you buy the latest and greatest, its already at least one version of android behind. Not to mention that in a month or so afterwards company x releases something better so developers jump ship to that one. And thanks to the overlays and tweaks that are added it takes forever to get otas. And so on and so on.
That's why I've been seriously considering wp8. But now the problem is my handset choice is going to be so limited and im not going to at&t. Coverage sucks in my area and they are more expensive than Verizon. So in other words, booo to Nokia

It is probably only available to new users or upgrades signing a 2yr agreement.
I think the price is due to the fact that its a horribly made phone. I some how got verizon to take it back even though i was past my 30 days. thank god..set back is that im on a garbage flip untill something worthy comes out. Dont think im gonna go back to android though.

I've never heard that Samsung had a horrible name in the mobile phone industry. I've heard that they aren't the greatest with providing updates, but the hardware in their phones is almost always the latest and greatest when the phones are released. Given the size and form factor, I can't say that my Fascinate feels flimsy either. If it weighed much more than it does, I'd wonder more about why it was so heavy over enjoying how much more sturdy it felt.
On a more personal note, if all you are going to do is come in here and bash the Fascinate, and not provide anything of any use or substance, I suggest you look elsewhere to read and post, possibly here
The Fascinate is among the best phone, hardware wise. Although, I do agree about the flimsy part. Coming from a Touch Pro, the Fascinate feels flimsy. If you feel that way too, I would recommend the verizon stand case. It adds a nice heft to the phone and feels very solid.
Also, ignore the trolls. I honestly believe that the iPhone is the ONLY way to go for some people.
no i know the hardware is great....if it works properly...ie:gps but cpu and gpu are great.
Yeah i got rid of my fascinate thank god. I came from the iphone on att but left because of the network. And now on verizon i tried android....but there are no quality apps, almost no push notification apps...ie:sports apps

What do you think of the Motorola Triumph?

Virgin has full coverage here in NYC. I don't talk a lot. I use a lot of text/gtalk. They have 25$ plans. The processor/gpu is the same as the thunderbolt. I was going to wait on the nexus 3 but if the Triumph comes out and someone can get CM on it somehow- I might pick it up.
I know the Triumph (Thunderbolt specs) and the Nexus 3 (supposed quad core) are totally different but for 25 a month- that's very attractive.
I know this place will be pro-Vibrant and most likely pro nexus since its a dev device but if the Triumph can get a 2nd init install of Cm or MIUI- why not?
Thoughts?

I am really tempted to pay my etf and make the switch to VM because the service (virgin mobile which uses Sprint's network) is a lot better then T-mobile's in my area. I've heard the Triumph also is running stock android, so thats a plus. I say go for it, $25 a month is a very good deal and VM has a 30 day returm period, so if you don't like it you can return your phone.

I think Virgin has a 30 day period to return the phone if you don't like it. It would be nice to try it. Worse comes to worse and you don't like it, return it and you're only losing the 25$ for that month.

As much as I don't like verizon's phones. They have the fastest mobile network in the US hands down (LTE and not CDMA). Their devices average 12Mbs, and can hit up to 21Mbs. There's really no contest there. T-mo and the others can't do that today.
First, this is my first post in this sub-forum, as I have a fascinate, but I just wanted to point out 2 things about this phone and Virgin Mobile in general:
1. Sprint has wonderful service in my area, better than AT&T and T-Mobile, but not as good as Verizon. I DO know that I am willing to have one less bar and slower data to save $60 a month. Also, I don't travel where Sprint doesn't have service, so roaming is a non-factor to me, although to some people that should be a pretty big point, as VM doesn't roam out of sprint's network (trade offs... pfft)
2.Virgin Mobile's android phones follow a trend, sell the phone for ~ 50% of retail. I'll prove it:
Optimus S $299 | Optimus V $149 and Samsung Transform (Sprint no longer offers the Intercept) $350 | Samsung Intecept $199 (I see it all the time on sale at BB for $175)
What this leads me to believe is you simply need to find the equivalent phone and simply slash it's price in half, +/- $50. I believe the EVO is the closest match, so take half of that price and you get roughly $225, according to Sprint. Therefore, I believe the triumph will be $250.
What do you all think?
the phone will be sold for $299.99
you can pre-order it now on bestbuy's website.
just go there and search for "motorola triumph"
I'm kinda pissed that the price is so high, but unlimited data, text, and web for 25 a month... will make up the difference in a few months on the money you save from paying your normal phone bill.
If it can't be rootrom'd then im gonna wait for the nexus 3.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I wouldn't, what most people don't know is how these carriers are able to sell the phones for so little money. For example, the rumor touch is 100 bucks for virgin mobile while the off-contract price for the rumor touch on sprint is 250 in most stores, how are they able to do that? the answer is different parts, not just different brands, also lower quality, which is why most people who have a prepaid phone have the most phone problems, there's not a single prepaid phone in the last 3 years that I've seen with no serious problems. While the same can be said for post paid versions in this case it is much worse on prepaid smartphones.
Ask anyone who repairs/mods cellphones, most of the time they won't mess with prepaids :/
The reason those companies sell it higher at full price is to try to get you into their contract.I have never had a problem with a prepaid phone.I personally don't mind getting it cheaper without the contract.I also will dev or work on any phone prepaid or not.I am looking forward to the Triumph, finally there will be a nice spec'd phone on prepaid. While I am happy with th Optimus V I was already looking to use it as a donor for another phone. But with this coming out, I'll just sell my V and get it.Though I'm sure it will have a locked bootloader as long as it can be temp rooted to remove bloatware I'll be very happy.

AT&T - Atrix at "end of life"

Interesting post from the Moto forums today. This makes perfect sense given the way AT&T has been going the last few months:
"posted 3:08 PM by billsite34
I was at an ATT store this morning inquiring about a laptop dock for my Atrix. They couldn't find it on their website(discontiued), then they said that the original Atrix was at "end of life" as far as ATT was concerned. I take this to mean that ATT will no longer support the Atrix and not push for ICS from Motorola for it!"
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/ae343df67e?post=ae343df67e&start=301
ugh. F motorola.
next phone won't be a motorola. sadly. don't much like any of the other phones.
Sadly I will probably go with a Samsung. If I were to get one tomorrow, it would be the Skyrocket (there's LTE here).
Yeah, I would go back to samsung (skyrocket) I had a captivate before the ATRIX.

Its one thing for a carrier to stop selling a phone after that, but if the phone is only supported by the manufacture for 6 months, there is a serious issue. Especially given that a bar has been set for about 2 years by both Apple and Google on Nexus devices, and that 2 years is the length of the average US contract.
I think this is being read into wrong though. AT&T most likely is just no longer selling the OG model, not Motorola discontinuing support.
I have not given up on ICS yet, but I think it is unlikely to come to the Atrix 4G. I realized that when I recognized the Atrix 2 was a cost reduced version of the 4G. My theory is that MOTO marketing f'd up big time when they over priced the Atrix and accessories. The Atrix 2 was doomed because the Atrix name was damaged beyond reclamation.
I don't see any new phone presently available that is significantly better and some worse. Posts like the one that started this thread hasten the day when I say, "enough already" and install cm7/9.

I'm a little surprised Atrix is getting dropped cause it was such a big deal when it came out. If Apple makes the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen, I'm getting it. Atleast Apple won't drop support for it. That's one of the reasons Android pisses me off. Stop making 200 different Android phones a month, and concentrate more on updates. You've got phones coming out that people forget about in a month.

ATT is not the only vendor but looking at the update history so far, it would be too late to expect ICS for atrix considering delay in GB update.
I believe the statement this guy posted is true regarding the Atrix 4G and AT&T. If you look on the AT&T website you cannot buy the laptop dock anymore on either the regular store or the premier store. AT&T previously told me that when an item is removed from there instead of being marked "out of stock", it's gone for good. AT&T is selling off Atrix accessories, and I do believe they are done with the Atrix. Will they still sell it?...............sure, until the stock is depleted.............will it still be around for a long time?.............sure............the refurbs will be going round and round for years to come.
What is perturbing is that this phone lasted a measly 6 months or so, as was already stated. Nobody disputes that phones come and go, new models are released, etc.............what is messed up is that people who purchased "the most powerful cell phone on the planet" were lied to about the specs by both AT&T and Moto, one case in point being 1080p recording which we never got, and have suffered lack luster support from both entities.
I love my Atrix, and will keep it as long as devs are putting out new ROM's, etc., but I am up for an upgrade again in less than 2 months, and will look for something with more support. Unfortunately I am stuck with AT&T for the time being because I have a family plan with 5 phones on it, and who would pay early termination on 5 phones?
This is my 4th Android phone. Like someone else said, 3gs was supported for least 3 years. I think I want to try an apple phone next. We shouldn't have to rely on outside people/unofficial support for the next version of Android.

The reason they push a new product every 6 months or so is reflected on the attitudes of most android forums; never satisfied, always desiring something more from their devices. People make lateral device changes (Atrix to Moto RAZR for example) instead of upgrades because there is some level of constant dissatisfaction with their Android device. Companies such as motorola are catering to this, and making tons of money in the process. Why bother support a device for multiple years when people are willing to shell out gobs of cash for Android's 'flavor of the week'? It makes more money for the company and the carrier.
You have to remember that the carrier not the device manufacturer decides what phones make it to market. Apple was wise to keep their warranty and product support in-house, and their quality and support reflects as much. Other phone manufacturers are bent over the carriers' knee. The carrier dictates how long the phone is supported, what accessories are available, and how software updates get pushed. Apple was wise to circumvent all this BS, and look how many iPhone accessories there are in every store, how Apple pushes software updates via their own program, ultimately you get an overall better product that is supported for much longer, while still maintaining profitability.
I love Android as a product, but what an abysmal business model for an open source-based OS. The only thing that keeps me going on Android are the occasional product gems such as the Atrix and the unofficial support provided from devs around the world.
Lets face it, Android owners still look to Apple as the golden standard.

Carriers like shooting themselves in the foot I guess, now we'll just see which companies even try to enforce it. I don't think much will come out of it.
Otherwise if this is enforced, it will be effective as antipiracy and growth in sale of unlocked phones and prepay.

Basically, what everyone will do Im sure. Unless it's enforced somehow.

Like TMobile just started expanding HSPA+ for unlocked AT&T phones across the US.. I can't see TMobile running out and canceling it now.. I don't think the law will stick.
Read about this earlier this week. Its stupid and assinine. This why verizon is my last contract. Hate how much you have to bend over to these carriers. When my wife and I were in china for 6 months using a phone there was a total different experience and I loved how much control you have. Then again there's no such thing as contracts and you buy the phone out right but I'm all for that anyway. Plus then I can say I own the phone outright. Sort like verozon I started with a droid 2 and sold ot 5 months in for the PLAY.

Hmm. But they'll need some special thing to track and the enforce that (se) laws. And anyway, once you unlock BL you are likely to flash a ROM so any software the carrier may put on it will be wiped.... Wonder how they'll enforce it.. (if at all)
This will catch the people that use a service like cellunlock.net. I used it last week to unlock an Xperia Play I found in a house that I just moved into. After I heard about this I'm just feeling fortunate that I did so earlier, otherwise I'd probably have to fear being made an example of. The reach of this stupid law isn't as bad as it's made out to be but it shouldn't exist in the first place.

Agree totally. Contracts are like those little Chinese finger traps -_- This law is so funny, lol. With as much as phone unlocking has expanded and benefited people, this is just laughable.

When Does Google normally make new Nexus available

I am ready for a new phone... but can still wait for a couple new months.... Want to get the Nexus 4 --- stuck on SGS2 and G2X.
I know the Google I/O is in May, so trying to figure out, wait till May - to see what happens, and then buy a new phone in May (if a new one comes in at that time).. or does the new Nexus not really become available till late in the year for purchase.. about Oct/Nov.
If its that long, I would rather by the N4 right now.
Any Ideas from you guys?

AFAIK, Google never released a Nexus smartphone at I/O. Nexus phones are usually released around Oct/Nov. Nexus 4 was released last Nov. I wouldn't expect another Nexus phone in May. There might however be a Motorola phone during I/O, but I don't think it'll be a Nexus device.
You can expect a successor for Nexus 7 as it was released last I/O.
When they feel the need of more money....
Changing the vendor for the nexus device is just not working for them. This time even they cheated the customers with n4 with all the junky hardware when they knew that new arm designs are coming just after a month.
So a futuristic hardware is what we all need.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Nexus devices are intended to be reference devices to showcase the latest versions of Android in their stock, unfettered form. They're for developers. Nexus devices (outside of the Nexus One) have never been top of the line in terms of hardware. They don't need to be. Nexus isn't marketed as a premium brand, nor does it have the premium brand price tag that comes along with it. My God, they're selling the Nexus 4 for $299 8GB and $349 16GB off contract. What do you expect for that price?

You won't see a new Nexus phone before fall. So if you want a Nexus, pull the trigger on an N4. It's a great phone, the price is right, and you're basically guaranteed Android version updates through at least the middle of next year.

Subjective opinion is subjective.
As for ETA of Nexus 5, I too doubt Google will announce it at Google I/O. Although it has been done before (HTC Dream), recent trend shows Google I/O focuses more on tablets. But you never know, just be patient.
We will see, last year Google launched two tablets. Rumours are that Motorola X will be launched on Google I/O. I hope they will, but if you need a phone now, N4 is still very good choice.

Like said by most, look more for the fall for a true Nexus device. This might talk about KLP but not new hardware on the phone, maybe preview an update to the tablet though.

There is a thanks button but is there a "ignore this person who has no clue" button?
Junky hardware? The most recent marketed ARM architecture in a quad core phone with a decent GPU, spangly glass back, HD screen and all for nearly the subsidized price of every other phone on the planet (the SGS3 is like $600 without carrier subsidy).
This phone is easily the bargain of the century, which is probably why Google was caught off-guard when they launched it. The previous Nexii were only bought by nerds, now I know a dozen people who used other Android phones or iPhones that jumped to unrooted Nexus 4s just because of the cost savings.
Thank you guys... as I stated, I can easily put of a couple of months, its mainly the G2X that is killing me and want to replace that....but if its till fall, then I might as well bite the bullet and get this one.. instead of waiting till later on.
does anyone think the Motorola phone will be thru google also.. or would that be thru carriers? because I am DONE with carriers.. want it straight from the source.
Right now its sounding like its not going to be a Nexus, so no guaranteeing that its going to be on the cutting edge of Android. Also, it might be available unlocked but I suspect it wont be unlocked for $300/350. Probably more like the $600 everything else goes for unlocked.
Even if it was only $400 Id rather have the Nexus 4. Every rumor seems to be stuck on the Tegra chip, I have had two devices with Tegra chips and both were massive disappointments. Qualcomm seems to be really good at beating Nvidia in the mobile space without breaking a sweat.
Ditch the carriers now, its amazing how satisfying it can be. Not only is your bill cheaper but you always know in the back of your mind that if they ever angered you that you could tell them to shove it at any time.
Yeah .. I am ready to ditch the carriers... just need to have my number ported over to GVoice so that I can keep my number....unless there is another method?
How does keeping your number work with prepaid?
And Yeah I am going to go ahead and get the Nexus then, since fall is too far away to deal with G2x --- cant believe its another LG I am going to go to after that fiasco
You can port it to pre-paid as well, they are still under the rules set by the portability act. Being said you might as well just port it to GVoice and use that. Then you could change carriers and sims at will without worrying about the number.
One thing to note, voicemail is a bit wonky with pre-paid because only AT&T right now supports conditional forwarding, so if someone got a hold of the actual phone number you will get an old fashioned voicemail instead of GVoice. Otherwise it works well (I call out using the app). Calling the Google Voice number though gets you the transcribed voicemails.
I am with straight talk and can flip back and forth at will between AT&T or T-Mobile sims month to month based on where I am. I just cant flip numbers back and forth, so that is why the Google Voice number is key.
As far as the phone itself is concerned. I read the reivews (short and long term) for the Optimus the Nexus was made from and everyone, virtually unanimously, said it was an incredible phone let down by ****ty software. Well, making it a Nexus and putting vanilla android solved that. Add that stupidly low price and its a done deal.
Just ordered it from the Play store... I guess they are shipping within about 2 weeks or so.. should get it by April.. hopefully.

What? I ordered mine I think 2 weeks ago when starting my day in the office and got it waiting for me the next day after work. Well the yellow delivery car was still parking in front of our flat while my wife happened to receive the delivery. This happened to me almost twice, when I ordered the first Nexus 4 a month ago for my cousin in Romania, they needed one more day...
Cheers, Lucian

What? With one of the best mobile processors available (the best at launch), 2GB ram and a very good 720p HD display; the N4 is faar from being 'junky'.
Get your facts right.
I agree to users who say that n4 offers this much in this price tag. If ur a price centered person then why not go for cheap huwavei phones they have even more to offer in half the price of n4.
Nexus should be a premium device sith futuristic hardware. A average hardware, means that samsung or other oem are giving u more futuristic device that can get more updates on a single version than nexus.
Price should not be a justification.

That makes no sense...when the n4 came out it came with the best processor on the market and 2 GB of ram...those $200 crap huwavei come with single core 1ghz processors and 512mb of ram and a ****ty screen...so how exactly are they better when they use specs from 2 years ago?
