[Q] how to change kernel without root - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I'd like to change kernel without having root, because I had rolling problems and I don't want to clean everything. I think is possible to flash kernel with Odin. But all kernels are zip. How to transform in tar? Is it possible my idea or is a stupid thing?

Just extract the boot.img from the zip and then make a tar file with 7zip. Flash with odin as PDA. I think this is right. Someone correct me please if I'm wrong.

Half way there, the tar file needs to contain the zImage file, this is the kernel part.

Ok, but in the rom tar there is no zimage, only boot.img. I thought they are the same..

The boot.img contains a RAM disk as well as the kernel, where as zImage is just the kernel only. I suppose they are the same thing but, from memory, I can only remeber only ever seeing zImage files in official tar releases for flashing with Odin. Thats not to say "I" could be wrong with the boot.img support for Odin though).

@RavenY2K3: Yes, I agree but on the latest stock ics from sammobile there is only boot.img.
@OP: I have read that a rolling screen can be fixed with a bootloader and not a kernel. In any case, IF you find a zimage then do as I said in first post. Now the boot.img SHOULD work but I am not 100% sure, so I can't help any more!

I think I was wrong to totally disregard the boot.img route, I think it's because nearly all of the custom kernels for the other Sammy devices I own all use the zImage method, I just had a look at A1 and his uses the zImage method where as the Yoda one uses boot.img.
So after all this the conclusion is... as long as they are tar files for Odin, do what you like, they'll both work haha

All's well then!

I tried many solutions. Only works flashing cm10. But it has some bugs and I don't like it. So I returned to ICS stock. But I have a note too and I had the idea about Odin and flashing kernel.

well, flash it and I hope everything turns out good!

odin back to stock

hello. i know there are other topics with this subject, but my question is:
when i odin back to stock why do i see first the samsung i9000 screen and then the vibrant one?
how can i fix this?
originally i would see only the vibrant screen then talking logo and then setup wizard.
thank you.
you flash a i9000 rom before?
try getting your tar file from another source
can you elaborate?
sure
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
so it's just a problem with my stock tar file? because i used the same one another time and all was good.
i was on biffmod, gingerzen - GB roms ...
think its bc of gingerbread bootloaders. someone come confirm or correct this for me please
Yes, you should use a different tar, the modified GB stock tar if you want to flash back and remove i9000 bootlogo, search file:
GBBOOT-T959UVJFD.tar
Cheers!

[q] ec09 update

Hello, I have two questions:
If the bootloader Odin file and pit file are used should repartition be checked?
Is it safe to flash over the EC07 Miunia?
Thank you

No. Repartition doesn't NEED to be checked. And I would advise flashing ec07 leaked, first

Yes. From what I've beenctold by imnuts, eb01 patches some apks that aren't outright replaced in ec09. So, assuming you dontvwindbup to revert to DL17 and get the ota, i would flash either ec07 leaked, or dl17 stock odex all in one, then flashing eb01 then ec09. That would be my personal advice. Others are more than welcome to jump in.

You can use the Odin package for everything except the modem. I'll see if I can put a modem only CWM zip together then to go from DL17 to EC09

True. My brain wasn't functioning. The odin packages have the patched and replaced files where they are supposed to be, since they were pulled from OTA updated phones.
so the odin packages do not contain the new modem?
if yes, would there be issues flashing the odin before flashing the modem?

So I've searched around both in forums and google but cannot figure this out. Is there a way to determine which modem is currently running on the phone? I know I never flashed the EC09 modem but not sure if I'm on the DL17 either, and I've gone through all the phone properties I can think of with no luck.

alright well I'm confused then. My baseband version I'm running the EC09, but the odin packages don't contain that modem? Did flashing the odin only change what displays there and not actually flash the modem?

Not really. The ec09 modem seems to have slightly better tability, over ec07 or dl17, but no, it wont make your phone unusable. Question. Is there any reason you are reluctant to flash the modem?

Not at all. Just have to go back through CWM flashing and delete songs off sdcard to put zip file on. I noticed the DL17 modem is a md5 file, flash through odin in the PDA section?

Yes. For clarity, It's the EC09 modem. I know you know that, but some poor soul is gonna stumble in here and leave with his brain bleeding. But, yes it is an ODIN flash in PDA. No repartition (obviously) no PIT and reboot and f. reset are whatever.

Stock Kernel GT-I9500

I've been looking for the stock kernel for my Galaxy S4 GT-I9500. I flashed a custom kernel thinking about "higher scores" in benchmark tests but it didn't work and now I'm getting lower scores... Even with the CPU overclocked to 2.0 GHz... But I can't find the stock kernel.
I have the stock firmware (thanks to SAMMOBILE) on my laptop but I am trying to avoid the master reset. I'm uploading a screenshot of my current firmware so that it would be easier.
I hope someone can help me and if this is a repeated thread; well sorry about that.
THANKS! :good:

Please open the tar.md5 file of your rom with WinRAR and extract the boot.img file and send to me i'll convert it to you as an Odin flashable pack
EDIT : Here is the link for the stock kernel extracted from my rom zip and converted to an Odin flashable pack It goes on the AP tab of odin no need to wipe anything https://mega.co.nz/#!ZZ5HQSLK!5VSAHAQW8_n2upHObILy7lLNa2coEFI-KRdwibC7WIA
Its a great method for switching kernel but there in anpther problem. Perseus kernel stops android logger so when you return to stock kernel you will get bunch of fc's. I didnt manage to take care of it. I always install a rom when switched to stock kernel.

Galaxy Grand Stock Kernel

Hi All,
I just extracted the stock kernel (boot.img) from I9082XXUBMJ3_I9082ODDBMJ1_I9082DDUBMJ1 and packed it for cwm flashable zip.
I did this for my own backup purpose.
I was facing MTP issue with Evolution kernel so felt like reverting to stock kernel.
Publishing it for the just reference sake.

If you open the tar file in any zip software you can find the zimage.bin file, that's your kernel
For OTA I guess you have to capture the downloaded ota on your phone. Search on xda to see how to capture ota

EPK2 bootloader and modem for N910T

This may sound stupid to some, forgive my ignorance, but if I flash the BL and Modem over my current DOK2, can I then just download and install a custom rom that is based on EPK2 and flash it like normal? Or do I need to actually flash the OFW?

You will have to flash a newer ROM. Whatever DOK2 ROM you are using now will prob not play nice with the updated (not upgraded) BL and baseband. Personally, I haven't found a MM ROM that I liked for this device.

Yeah that is what I had planned on doing. I was just wondering if flashing just the modem and BL would allow me to then flash a custom MM rom without having to first flash the full firmware. Was just looking for a short cut. But I have not decided if I want to upgrade or not. I am currently using Maximum Overdrive v7.1.1, just seems a bit sluggish these days.
