[Q] Want a stable ICS...Do I need to unlock the bootloader - Acer Iconia A500

I am currently running Thor's Tegraownder JB Rom v14 and its nice but not very stable. I'm looking for a nice light fast ROM and I decided maybe it might be time to head back to XDA after using Thor's ROMs for a while now.
Looking through the XDA forums I feel completely lost. I see lots of talk about honeycomb and ICS bootloaders but I have no idea what I need to do to run the latest and greatest ROMs. I'm already able to flash ROMs since i'm also running Thor's Recovery so can I flash any ROM from XDA without doing anything else or do I have to load the ICS bootloader?
I'm not a stranger to rooting but I don't recognize any of this. Can someone explain that these things are?
CPUid
APX
SBK
I guess long story short how do I get from Thor's JB ROM with Thor's custom recovery to a stable ICS or JB Rom that is fast and stable? Any help would be appreciated.

Downgrade 3.2 to 3.0.1 AND root help

i dont want to have my hand held every step of the way so i will try to outline what i believe i need to do and hopefully someone can confirm and correct me.
here goes....
first use this method, apparently method 2 better, to downgrade...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
i then need to follow a process to either root it and leave it as 3.0.1 but rooted or install a custom rom that is rooted? if i need to install custom rom due to that instability mentioned in method 2 i could just put a stock but rooted 3.2 i believe. is there a list of rooted 3.2 roms that i can just install without playing around with kernels or whatever? which is the best currently?
thanks guys and please be gentle
I used the downgrade to 3.0.1, root that, install cwm by thor, then for now flashed Taboonay.
I too am looking for a Rom that fits me right. I'll report back if I find it.
<warning>**** I Void Warranties ****</warning>
cheers mate. idecided to use method 1 and it went without a hiccup. i then rooted.
for now i will leave it with stock 3.0.1 rooted as i am sure ice cream sandwich will be out in a short period and then i will look to put a rooted version of that on when it is known to be stable and someone has a good tutorial on it.
thanks for all the work that goes into the development of this great OS.
one of the reasons i wanted to root is to increase cpu speed.
when i just installed setcpu it wont allow me to go over 1000mhz which i presume is to do with the stock rom.
any suggestions? does this mean i will HAVE to install a custom rom, if so is there a list or any roms that are definitely better than others? if so, i guess there will be different procedures to install depending on the rom,?.
Not necessarily a custom rom, but a custom kernel. Some roms include kernels, some dont. Any you can install kernel wthout rom if you want.
I used method 2 and downgraded to 3.0.1. This version is very unstable as I got a force close message every 5-10 seconds. I immediately rooted using iconia root. (Iconia root and the rom that I was going to flash were already on my sd card prior to going through the process) Kekinash has a rooted stock rom here in the development section if that's what you want. I downloaded it, but I have not flashed it yet because I am happy with Thor's current 13.2 rom. There is a link to Thor's website in the general section. I won't post it here because of xda rules. I can't speak for any other roms in this section because I only ran rooted stock before the 3.2 update.
Lightspeed Rom is pretty snappy
cheers guys, went with honeyvillain.
only probs: first it says to insert a sim card, as i have a a500 it doesnt use a sim card, this is probably why 2 force closes come up straight away for system updater possibly?
second, the market kept saying there was an error. i uninstalled the market and found the latest market apk and all is fine so far running 1400mhz.

Good kernels from the person who made the recovery possible....

[Q] Another reverting question...

I'm tired of looking for an answer to this seemingly simple question on google and searching on here. I've had at least 5 tabs open for the last hour combing through posts and replies.
Question is this: A500 running thor's v14.2 rom along w/ his custom kernel. To revert back to stock. Do I need to flash back to the stock kernel along w/ the stock rom. If so, where can I get the kernel from?! The closest thing I came across was a post that gave the source link where you had to build the kernel yourself.

did you make a nandroid of your ROM before you flashed the current ROM youre on?
of course not! lol. I was too excited to play around w/ it that I neglected the basics. And honestly, I've been putting off reverting back because I'm quite happy w/ thor's rom.

you may hafta install a rom thats just plain HC with root, like a 3.2.1 HC rom
would that allow for ota updates and such?

i believe so, yes, but you may want to ask someone with more experience than me, im good with phones, but tabs are a new thing to me
thanks! I found out that thor's kernel is supposed to work w/ the stock rom. so I'm just going to try loading a rooted stock and hope I don't brick it.

good luck bro!
I've also decided to head back to a stock ROM in both anticipation of the ICS update and to try and get video working with Skype. My problem is, I'm using a A501, which seems to be the unwanted red headed stepchild of the Iconia family!
I'm on a custom ROM (Moscow something-er-rather?) with CWM. Do I just find a copy of the stock ROM and flash like a custom? I just really want to be able to get OTA updates and hopefully solve my Skype video issues...
Thanks in advance!

I see vache has a couple Full 3.2 Stock 501 roms on his thread here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
i got a a500 and i assume you extract the update.zip and flash as per a500. Dont wanna put u wrong tho' so maybe ask moscow on his rom thread, he da man when it comes to the 501
Okay - I'm going to try and flash that update.zip and see what happens. My biggest concern is the lack of Skype video - I can only assume it has to do with the ROM flashed, and nothing else, because other people claim they are able to use Skype video.

Need Some Advice on my Device!

Hello.
Im have a question for someone who has a rooted nexus s 4g.
I've been rooting since the motorola droid milestone so since then i rooted 3 android devices. (two year contract makes me suffer).
Anyway, i been waiting soo bad for ics and had my device rooted running unofficial ics roms so when it updated i flashed back to stock.
My phone sucks now so i want to root but i still want the basic ics theme so what would you recommend.
im thinking just root it and then flash a matrix kernal. or whatever kernal works best for most of you.
And.. when i root it does it install a custom rom or it just unlocks the one im using.
thanks in advance.
when you root the phone stays with it's current ROM,so no it will not flash a custom ROM for you,if the ics them is your only concern, there is many ROMs that keep this theme (check development section),and sure you can root and keep the stock ROM and flash any kernel you want.
Thanks for the help. Just what I was looking for. I'm going to reroot when I get out of work.
I'm going to do some more research because I love maths kid matrix but I might want to try air kernal. Maybe try slim ics.

[Q] TWRP = only flash roms that are based on the Asus OTA?

I've had my TF300 for a few weeks now and am disappointed with the sluggishness of the offical JB ROM when compared to my GS2 on AOKP or even my wife's Tablet S with stock ICS. I'd like to try some of the modified official ROMs or CM10.
After searching these forums for a while and reading the various guides, it seems like the easiest way to unlock and root the tablet is to use the Asus unlocker apk then use fastboot to install TWRP. When I downloaded TWRP I noticed it said:
"If you have taken the official Asus Jellybean OTA then be sure to install the '-JB' version of the recovery for your device - and only flash roms that are based on the Asus OTA."
Does this really mean I'm restricted to ROMs based on the official JB? If I go with CWM will I be able to install any ROM? Am I stuck no matter what because I already have the OTA JB? Thanks for the help if anyone can answer, I just couldn't cobble together a clear answer from the threads I read.
You can flash any Rom you like with Twrp. You just have to dl the right version for the bootloader.
I am using Twrp from the beginning and never had any problems with it.

Thanks for the reply. So is the caution on the TWRP site just superfluous? I have to admit that it makes me nervous going forward.
It means you need to flash roms that support the JB bootloader. So no ICS roms.
there are a few CM roms that are based on JB that will flash fine. Just today I tried 2 CM roms and one hybrid CM+AOKP port on my TF300t that was running the OTA JB update (unlocked and TWRP'd).
Just be for sure anything you flash says for JB bootloader. There are a few 4.1 cm based roms for the old ics bootloader. The warning you saw on the website is just trying to warn because so many people just flash **** without reading.

Got it. Thanks guys.
I'll be unlocking and putting TWRP on tonight to see what kind of ROM I like. Appreciate the clarification.

Care to make a how-to video? Joking of course... Just bemoaning my incompetence... I get the Asus bootloader apk, and I know how to flash roms using twrp (I have used it for about a year on my S2 and S3) but from what I read, installing twrp on the tf300 looks more challenging than on my phone. I will keep searching, but I may be forced to throw on my flame suit and start a thread if I cant get this resolved soon!
go the the video thread and look for the video titled
"How to Flash ClockWorksMod Recovery + ROOT ( Works on ALL Fimrware )"
just use the twrp.blob instead of the CM one and you're good to go.

[Q] out of practice and need jelly bean advice

Hi xda
I am totally out of practice but really want a jelly bean update. I am running the last Taboonay vache did before he had to stop development, so i already have cwm running (version 1.3.4)
Is this just like usual? Grab a rom, boot cwm, wipe data dalvik and cache, flash new rom? Do i need to update cwm first?
And finally, what jelly bean rom (if any) should i go with? Looking for something nice and stable.
Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

noooooo lol you have to update your bootloader if your still on honeycomb i got the ota then got an unlocked bootloader after that install your recovery and your good honeycomb roms wont work ics bootloader though so beware
This thread has a guide on how to get from stock to a custom ROM, it also details how to unlock the bootloader.
In one of their updates, Acer updated the Iconia's bootloader (the part that starts up Android) and it is now necessary to install a patched version in order to install ICS/Jelly Bean ROMS. Feel free to ask more questions in that thread if you get stuck.

Thanks, both of you! I finally figured it out, now got unlocked boot loader - light speed ROM (the jb rooms seem a little too soon to use), custom kernel, and overclocking enabled with the Lulzactive governor. I am *very* happy!
