I am starting this thread so every one can report on actual phone reception/talk quality, including everything from reception, to quality of calls, dialer, anything related to using the gn2 ....as a phone. Im sure theres other threads on wireless, bluetooth etc., so lets leave those out. I hope this thread will be usefull on the future.
Who here has a gn2 in the usa and has it on att? Hows is the phones reception call quality etc?
Is the sound as good as the gs3?
If theres already a thread like this, sorry just lock.
I wonder if call quality will very between carrier here in the us. Also international peeps comment as well.

I apologize for the post I know this information is around and believe me I have spent weeks searching and reading around before troubling you, However before I go and drop almost $600 on a phone I was hoping to just double check and get some verification that this should work.
I currently have a AT&T Tilt (aka the Kaiser) and have had it for a few years now. I very much would like to get my hands on a Hero.
Based on everything I have read both here and else where I should be able to take the existing sim card from my Tilt pop it into this phone and be good to go
http://www.negrielectronics.com/hero-usnam-unlocked-black-p-3037.html
Its the HTC Hero US/NAM 3G version that a few sites have been offering. From what I understand it is likely from Canada, I guess that Rogers wireless uses the same bands as AT&T for 3G ? (850/1900 if i recall).
Have we heard of anyone doing this successfully?
Any issues I should know about?
General issues with the phone? (I haven't really heard anything and as I said i've been googlin my butt off for weeks)
My general use other than a phone of course.
GPS - use it on my tilt all the time
Music - Currently have a Motorola Bluetooth FM transmitter, as well as a pair of Motorola bluetooth headphones
Web access, the tilt is great as a phone but the OS is just to clunky, I would rather wait till I get home or to the office most of the time to google something then use any of the browsers I have tried.
Pictures now and then, love having a camera in my phone to take some snaps of friends but the Tilts is horrible as we all know.
Any incite you can provide would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

Looks to be the right model, at least according to the website. It's actually from Telus, which also uses the same 3G bands.

Works great on AT&T, haven't noticed any connectivity issues. As a matter of fact, I actually get better signal with this phone than I did with my old phone (an LG Vu). Also you should have full access to the Market, so no worries about not being able to download apps.

None specific to the North American version or using it with AT&T. Sense UI can be a big laggy at times, but there's plenty of solutions in this forum for that. Other than that, I personally have no complaints. Look through this forum for other people's thoughts. In general, though, most people's experience has been pretty positive and I think the majority of people in this forum would say it's a great device. (again, just my opinion based on following this forum)

The music app is not the most advanced, but it gets the job done, and I don't mind it. The bonus is that if you don't like it, you can replace it.

Browser's pretty good for a stock browser. Includes pinch-to-zoom and basic flash integration (a rarity on a phone). I like it. There's also alternatives for download in the Market, such as Dolphin, which is another great browser.

It's still a cell phone camera, albeit with a bigger sensor. I may be biased as a semi-professional photographer though. For a phone, it takes pretty good pictures, and the 5 megapixels is convenient, as you can usually actually see details in your pictures!

Overall, I'm very happy with my phone. I've had it since around Thanksgiving, and it's worked great. If you're buying it already unlocked, that simplifies things even further.
The one thing you'll have to do to get data and MMS working, though, is enter the proper APN settings so your phone knows how to get online. These come already on phones from AT&T, but not if you buy it elsewhere. They're easy enough to find by searching either this forum or Google for AT&T APN.
Hope you enjoy your Hero!
Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you! for all the info
Sounds like its a great phone, any of the minor issues seem to be things that are already 100x worse on my Tilt anyhow so it wont bother me any.
GOODBYE windows mobile!
Once I get the phone in I'll be sure to post the results for others reference.
I am a former Tilt user converted to the Telus Hero on AT&T and love every minute of it!.
I'm coming from the original droid and theres alot of places in between towns i used to have good reception where im breaking up now AND when im listening to everyone else theres like a small tunnel sound in the back ground. Is this something a update could fix and is anyone else experiencing these problems ?
Try *228 option 2... That will update your roaming capabilities... As far a the tunnel effect goes.. I have been experiencing the same thing.. I rarely use my phone for voice calls so its not that big of a deal.. Hopefully it's software and that will be correctable.

sorry for bribging this up here.but its a big issue to people who make calls a lot. this topic was made in the general section.but thought I'd bring it up here l,hoping the devs can look into this.
issue: when u make a call, the call log/time logger starts running and u don't hear anything,no ringing or anything.at all.u have to hang up and dial 2-4 times for it to finally ring. apparently the other person ur calling receives the call but hears nothing as well. this issue has been reported on dk28 roms.I , myself am running bonsais latest ext4 rom and am having this issue still. some people have suggested that turning the speaker phone on and off when making a call fixes this, but I refuse to do this for all my calls.lol.no offense to the developers, but coming from a hero,I never had calling issues whatsoever . and having issues like this on an expensive ass phone doesn't make sense lol.please help.thanks.

Same issue here! Except on mine it will show the call timer and the other side can hear me but I can't hear them... gotten me in trouble already haha. Annoying that our 600 dolar phones can only make phone calls sometimes.

I have this issue as well on dk28, if you go back to dl18 it fixes it. And its not the phones fault its the unofficial leaked froyo
Please post questions in General section.
I have the same problem, and it's persisted across 3 different ROMs (all DK28 based, though).
If it's truly a problem with the leaked source, why are more people not experiencing it? It affects at least 75% of my outgoing calls. Do people just not use their phones as phones that much?
I haven't tried the speaker trick yet.
Have this issue a well. Found that if u cycle ur speaker phone on and off it will correct for one call
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I've had this problem as well.
I thought it was cause I accidentally put my phone in between two slices of bread with cheese and mustard and bit into it...
yup add me to the dk28 phone outgoing call issue list 8)
Edit: It does not happen every time but I will have to give/remenber the speaker phone cycle test when it does.
Just saw this over on Google+ and didn't see it posted on here.
We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code.

The 911 issue is old news, but the decision to stop support for the phone specifically stating the reason to be said 911 issue is new.

I wonder why there hasn't been a fix for it yet. Why not just let us set a location during the initial setup. Seems like an easy fix to me

its the nice way of saying we are dropping support, they really dont have a good reason considering all that they really need to do is fix button mapping and release it, but since gps doesnt work 100% of the time they basically just said F*** it, thats my take, I'm sure that there will be kernels that are cm9 compatible and then we will just flash an I9000 version of the rom with a button mapped fix.
the best way to do it would be to create an update.zip that has a button fix in it so then we can just flash I9000 roms and then the button mapping fix but we'll see
So the 911 issue is specific to CM7 ROMs and not gingerbread ROMs for Vibrant in general? Do the new ICS ROMs have this problem?

I am sorry no - it isn't that simple. 911 calls, audio callbacks (and related GPS callbacks) aren't working correctly specifically on the Vibrant due to missing code in the Radio Interface layer and audio stacks. We don't have this code, we are unlikely to ever get this code. This was something we've been trying to fix for a while, and have finally given up. As a lot of other ROMs use our code, we'd rather not have CyanogenMod distributing a ROM that cannot do 911 calls correctly, even with disclaimers. The disclaimers will mean squat if someone actually has to call 911 and we strongly encourage you to stick with Samsung ROMs. Until we can fix this, this is off our supported device list and we are sorry about this.
This came to a head last evening after some unrelated threats, but an actual 911 operator who has been working with us to fix 911 calling made it clear to us just how dangerous this really is if Vibrant cannot do 911 calls, and we made the decision to stop support and remove the device from our supported list.
Yes, others can still build it - but it will not be CyanogenMod that does it. We're sorry about this.

Atinm you guys did the right thing. I appreciate everything you and everyone else working to bring CM on Vibrant did. However, no rom is worth risking someones life. I applaud you guys for making the right decision. I hope Samsung releases the source needed and we can get CM back on the Vibrant with working 911/GPS.
It may suck for us but its the right thing to do what if someone dies do to this then they could be sued and possibly mental stress on someone who is doing something for fun/free

That's a pretty weak excuse to give up on development. People can add local emergency service numbers to their phone contacts

I disagree. Local numbers don't do jack when you are out of town. To many what-ifs to worry about.
These guys supported our phones LONG after Samsung abandoned us. Credit where credit is due I say.

Another point to add is what if you didn't have cell reception? And you were lost in the woods? The only number you can contact is the emergency number which happens to be 911. So if you didn't have the option to call this # you are screwed big time.
I've been trying to research this 911 issue from a user's perspective for the past few days now, but I still have some questions unanswered. If anyone can answer them or point me in the right direction/thread I'd appreciate it.
First of all to reiterate something I learned, the issue isn't that you can't actually dial and connect to a 911 operator. The problem is that they won't be able to hear you and they wouldn't be able to get a GPS lock on your phone. Although I've also heard 911 calling does work for some people in some states.
Anyway, so my question is which specific ROMs actually support 911 calling? Is it JUST the offical stock ROMs? What about Froyo custom ROMs like Bioinix 1.3.1? I read from one Bioinix user that 911 does work, but I'm not sure if they're just guessing. Do these custom Froyo ROMs have this missing Samsung code (I'm guessing all GB ROMs don't)? Thanks!
Sooo I have to say it. What the hell is up with cm10 and all the aosp roms. The low volume bug is a complete deal breaker for me. After a year on 3 different jellybean devices people are still pumping out roms and updates but no one is taking the time to fix that issue. Its getting really annoying devs. You've had this issue since 4.1.2 and your still pumping out android versions and new roms.
Lets put it this way. When your rom looks and is awesome so I flash it only to realize within 5 minutes of first boot that I have to go back to touch wiz because I cant hear the phone ring from 2 feet away. Or I need headphones to listen to music or watch you tube your wasting my time and yours. If the phone barely makes sound your turning a high quality device into a peice of crap. . Ok rant done. Please fix the freaking issue guys
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
If you don't like it, fix it yourself. There are many tutorials out there and apps that help. Why don't you build a ROM that is perfect? Stop being a self entitled douche. If you don't want to use a ROM because of one thing, fine. Don't come here and insult us with your ignorance. Either do it yourself, find a fix yourself, deal with it or STFU and leave.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
How bout developers work it out because hearing your phone is essential to having and using a phone. 4.1.2, 4.2.2, and 4.3. Three android versions and all aosp roms still have 3xtremely low volume. And roms just keep pumping out ignoring the issue. And you have the nerve to come run your lip on an obviously understandable thread. You must be a douche that keeps pumping the roms out with the issue. Taking stuff personal is a sign of a guilty conscience.
I didn't call anyone out. Didnt name anyone. Even stated the issue exists on all 3 devices ive owned and tryed 4.1.2 and up aosp roms But the truth hurts. Call it constructive criticism if you must. But why waste making great roms and leaving the low volume issue untouched then people get all sour and defensive when you bring it up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
How about you don't use the ROMs if it is such a problem? You're damn right I have the nerve. You are doing nothing but complaining. If it is such a problem, why don't you work on finding a way to fix it. Like I said before, there are apps that fix low volume issues. Or you can use a regular stock based ROM. *Gasp*
Look here, sugar lips. We don't like self entitled pricks coming in and attacking developers. Yes... You are doing that. Instead of being a douche, you could ask and maybe someone would link you to an app to fix it. Or you could use Google to search. No one wants to deal with a person with your attitude.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
How about you fix it? Or don't use aosp? Or maybe quit whining about something that you don't contribute one bit to? You obviously aren't doing anything to help with the issue so it seems as though you have no right to complain about anything here. Its something that's provided for free dude. Not sure what you aren't comprehending about just that one simple fact. This whole post of yours is exactly what doesn't belong here on XDA. Just ask yourself what your post will accomplish... NOTHING...
Did you think about contacting the individual ROM developers and nicely asking them if it was a known issue or if there is a possible fix? Most Developers welcome feedback (if done properly).
This thread does come off as an attack against the Developers of CM, even if it wasn't intended to be. It reminds me of the thread the other day about some guy complaining about "depressed development"...why hang around if you feel that way? The stock ROM works pretty damn good too.
As stated many times, if you do not like the free software made at the cost of developers' free time at the cost of time from friends and family
Do not use it!
