Hi guys.
First time note user. Coming from galaxy s2 and s3.
Love the note 2. Simply the best smartphone ever made and so glad I went for it even after recently uograding to s3 which I will now sell.
Anyway...I feel like I should use the pen more. So want to see how others are using it? I have looked at s-note but not sure how I would use that. So if you have examples of how you would use that. That woule be good. Any other apps I can download to get good use?
I find it quicker to type with my fingers. Is this the same for everyone?
Look forward to your comments.

The only app i use the pen for is photo art
Its a nice feature but its not obligatory to use it imho
Only once i needed to note something fast and i used it.
but i know its there if i need it.
I had s1 , s2 and s3 too , and i am addicted to swype so i can't type with anything else.
I use it to learn to write japanese character on ankidroid.
I think that the Galaxy note 2 is just the best device to learn a foreign language on the go.
Signing contracts and documents. Instead of printing and scanning/faxing it back to them. I just sign it with my s pen and email it back to them.
Emailing photos and marking it up with the s pen is so much more personal and exact when you need to highlight or point something out in the photo.
Writing down a phone number or a quick note
I don't use it daily but it sure is very helpful and flexible when I do use it.

I use it to take notes, use it for the multi window feature, also a lot on the web especially when they are small links to click, the s pen gives you more precision and where they are sub menus instead of using your fingers the s pen helps a lot. Take screenshots alao
I put mine in a straw and blow it out, it makes for a surprisingly good projectile to shoot at the wife

And also to screen capture and edit

i don't have mine yet, but when i look at the review video's i think myscript calculator works better for this than s note does.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.visionobjects.calculator
Haven't found any S pen optmized apps other than stock, so the main use of Spen for me is to show off When I was putting a photo note yesterday, people were saying WOW
I've never taken the pen out of the phone and have no plans to do so lol.
Read you manual when you get the phone, it is worth it. The S-Pen is realy deep inbedded in the software mate, try quick commands for instancewhere you can open any app just by a s-pen shortcut command. It is realy great
I use the S-Pen for Games like SEGA Virtua Tennis, to Paint, Notes,Web and to make screenshots.
Whenever I'm on web, it works like a mice, so gotta have it in hand. Yahoo, espnstar a lot of websites have it optimized well.
In fact, it's always outside holster for me, whether on my hand or not.

I will use my S-pen of Note1 to clip some pictures and draw something~
It is good pen and function!!
Does it work with draw something? i really love that game and dont want to buy another stylus just to play it.
If you enable the pop up s-note, then it s-pen works just like pen and paper, kinda.
Pull out the s-pen (s-note pops up automatically). scribble whatever (reminder, phone number, address/etc), then just stick the pen right back in. The contents are saved automatically.
I've used it a few times to annotate pictures. circling stuff and writing 'park here', or 'click here', etc.
It's super useful for that, rather than sending a screen shot and saying 'hit the click the option about 2/3s way down'

Are you when using your Note 10.1?
Alot of times i feel i fall behind others while trying to 'setup' my Note for intake(i dont know how people type so fast on an iPad). in class, getting slides or document with s-note side by side, i see people faster with just printouts. This is compounded when the prof. switches between multiple documents/slidedecks.
the same goes for meetings. I often find im trying to format and i miss half of what was actually said.
It may be the fact im not really great at taking notes anyway, but i still feel after a month of use, the experience is uncomfortable and is often subtraction by addition. I never was productive with my iPad either, but i see people typing very quickly with theirs. I just would study powerpoints on it.
My Note 1 same thing. A big post-it pad work much more effectively when walking up to a coworker. Maybe its the looking down/at a screen effect.
Maybe someone can come up with a training course/regime to help people like me to be more productive. i mean, thats what i bought it for.
I use my Note for everything (Love this device). Most importantly, I use it in all of my engineering classes. So, I'd have to say that I'm turbo-productive.
Same here. By the time I could dig a pen and pad out, my Note and stylus are already rockin. I do nearly everything on it and feel resentful if I have to use my laptop for anything.
I think i spend too much time looking at the screen/making sure my words are being converted correctly(im not a great speller).
Any tips?
Do handwritten notes. That's the best way. I as use sugarsync so I can have all my scanned class handouts accessible even when my computer isn't on. It also autosyncs so I don't have to so much. I also have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard but I have yet to use them. I have only used one piece of paper since school started. The note's advantage over iPad is its pen. If you don't use it why did you buy a Note 10.1? For a typing tablet the Transformer Prime Infinity would have been the tablet to get.

I am constantly reaching for the Undo button when Im not using my Note. I do my physics labs on lecture notes, my calculus notes as well, and my french homework. I find that the only thing missing is a full Microsoft Word (next year?) but Office suite suffices. I also have to convert my Physics teacher's power points using MS as I haven't found an app that can do it without messing up the slides so the only way to do it is before class. All my teachers' presentations are available online so that helps with being prepared.

I second using handwritten notes vs written-to-type or even typed notes, unless you connect a physical keyboard.
My only other issue is how with my writing style s-notes still zooms in from time to time with my palm

Have you tried to zoom on a new note with your fingers while in pen mode but with the pen unlocked? For me this gets rid of the red box and then I lock the pen and no more zoom.

I was the first official US purchase. I have tons of meetings with banks and work and in class two times a week.
A tutorial / training program might help some of us improve our skills.
I did just do my HW by cropping the questions from a PDF scan of textbook and posting into s-Note side by side. I just feel when time is tight I seem to need to pay more attention to what the device is doing. Alot of re - writing words.
Thanks anyway all.

I have my Note 10.1 for around 6 months now, i use it daily and i'm happy with it regarding smoothness and performance but i can't find use for it's specific features. I use it like i would any other android tablet.
Some of the specific features i'm talking about which i don't use:
Spen: it looks interesting as concept but it doesn't feel pratical to use. it's much more intuitive to use your finger instead of going for the pen.
The pen feels like an unnecessary extension of your finger.
I tried drawing but it was a disappointing experience, it doesn't track fast enough like you would on normal paper, it's much too slow, i have to draw in slow motion or it won't keep up.
Maybe it is useful for some handwritten notes but due to the drawing lag and the fact that the keyboard prediction is quite good i end up preferring to just use the keyboard.
multiwindow (or apps in hovering windows): it looks powerful and interesting but i've yet to find a use for it. I use several windows in a PC usually but it doesn't feel pratical to do it in a tablet, the screen size/resolution isn't big enough, you get 2 small windows and end up not enjoying properly either app.
Please help me make better use of my note, i'm happy with it but i feel i'm waisting some potential uses.
Hi,
I use the spen every day to take notes in meetings or at my desk. the snote application is for me unusable but with the right app (in my case Lecturenotes) it replaced completely my paper notebook in the job. Together with syncing the notes to Evernote or own server or sending handwritten notes with drawings per mail directly to collegues it fit's all my needs.
As mentioned, I don't see any lagging using the pen. and true, using the pen only to control the device does not make sense at all.
Rgds
Sven
I bought the Note 10.1 primarily for notes, reading, work and browsing and I'm happy all round
I use the S Pen all the time and was one of the reasons I bought a Note and not a Nexus for example. Is your S Pen calibrated well? Mine has no problems with lag and can keep up with my writing with no problems at all. Maybe use a different tip?
I also use multiwindow which is nice for taking notes and browsing at the same time for example. Or watching a movie while working (if there's no boss around lol).
I got because I needed a 10" tablet for my whip and the note 10.1 had multi window.. I use this tablet as my main device.. I use cm10.2 because it seems a bit faster than stock and I came to the conclusion that multi window is pointless.. it doesn't work like it does on a PC were I can drag and drop
Sent From Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 [N8013]
I only use the multi-window occasionally. However, the stylus? I used to use that every day when I still had classes, but now that I'm doing all research and teaching, I only use it for quick and dirty calculations. I used to draw with it as well, but I don't have that time now.. :/
(What app are you using? I find that certain apps don't seem optimized for the spen, so the tracker does lag for those.)
tried lecture notes yesterday, looks clean and simple but i still feel the tracking lags a bit if you move the pen faster. if i write as i would on a normal paper it can't keep up completely. I tried the character recognition "keyboard" and it also fails to recognize most of my handwriting, might be a bit my fault too.
Anyway, still happy with my note, but i guess having spen or multiwindow won't be a requirement when i upgrade my tablet.
Otoh it seems that if choose to stick with samsung the new note 10.1 seems the only way to go because the galaxy tab3 has last year's screen resolution.

I agree. If you're not going to use the S-Pen, then why not get a Nexus 10 or even a Samsung Tab2/3? The only reason we put up with the dated resolution of the screen is the S-Pen, since there's no alternative (at least running Android).
Pretty much done away with notebooks here. I'm still torn between lecture notes and s note. I like certain features of each. I do find handwriting recognition more bother than worth. S pen IS the big advantage of the note. Definitely worth it to me.
Bottom line is my. Note is everywhere I am.

I use the multiwindow feature when I need several functions at the same time. For instance, I can open SNote with a calculator or internet navigator. But honestly, it's not my favourite feature.
I plan to move to another ROM since Samsung is not prompt to send us a new one. I would like to setup accounts. However, I would like to keep SNote ...

I would have considered the Nexus 10 if it was sold in my country (which is not), but, even so, i read that the Nexus 10 might not be as fast/smooth as the Note due to the higher resolution.

What do you mean exactly with hovering? Of course the software is _able_ to detect the spen hovering, because this is a hardware feature of the digitizer. For example: In lecture notes you can use hovering to scroll the page, that's because the developer chose to get the signals of the hardware (spen and digitzer). Samsung chose to integrate the hovering feature in the system api, so that you can scroll in menu's etc. Most of the AOSP rom's (i am using cyanogenmod, look at my signature) will not include the hovering in their system, but nevertheless it's a hardware feature that is enabled, but the software needs to use it. I hope you can understand this.
To palm rejection: It's nearly the same, with the little difference that the touchscreen always shuts down if the spen is near it. I don't know if it's even possible to write software that brakes this feature.
But I can assure you: On cyanogenmod the writing with spen is much more fluid, smoother and feels much better than on a tw based rom.

Best writing app: Lots to try
I bought my Note specifically to use the active stylus as a writing tool and wanted to take notes using a OneNote or Evernote type approach. So I have a wide array of opinion on the matter.
I assume your main goal is handwriting, as if you were writing with a pen on a piece of paper. Another thing to consider is writing-to-text conversion. I have only found two apps that really do this well: the Note software itself (you can write using the stylus and the Note converts to text) and Mazec 2. One really nice feature of Mazec 2 is that if you use NoteAnytime and write in a text box - but not convert on the fly - then you can convert at a later time. This is nice because conversion isn't always foolproof and it tends to slow me way down when I try to correct the mistakes the software makes. That said, I find that the Samsung software works better for me.
As for direct handwriting applications, I have tried many.
LectureNote gets really good review and I like its flexibility and power. But it isn't free, and its power comes at the expense of being more difficult to use.
I really like NoteAnytime. Its controls are intuitive and fast. It doesn't have line or shape tools - let alone shape recognition - like S-note, but I like the file system better.
LectureNotes is bitmap while NoteAnytime is vector graphics, so you can write really, really small when you zoom in and it is still legible.
Quill is okay, but I didn't stick with it long.
I like Papyrus, but NoteAnytime's controls are quicker to use. Papyrus is vector graphics, too.
Pensupremacy gets some good reviews, but I didn't see anyting better in it than other apps and when I imported it into Evernote the image was fuzzy.
Antipaper notes doen't do well if you place your palm on the screen, so I got rid of it quickly.
Write looks like a neat app, but when I'm taking notes I don't typically need the "word processor" features of it, so I don't use it much anyway.
One thing to mention is what I still have on my tablet. If I deleted it, I guess I didn't like it. If it is still on the tablet, I guess I like it enough.
Still loaded: Papyrus, Evernote, NoteAnytime, LectureNotes, Skitch, OneNote and Write. (Yes, Skitch really isn't a writing app, but it does really well in marking up photos.)
Here is another thread that contains a TON of info. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474744
Hope this helps!

I;ve never tried Mazec 2, but the Handwriting to text recognizition is awesome much much better than S-Note.
Owing to mbze430, i came to know the app called Stylus Beta by the same developper.
The function ans usability of handriting-to-text recognition in Japanese are awesome in both MyScript Note and Stylus Beta, with no comparison to Mazec2.
I cant wait for Stylus beta to be non-beta.

I was just curious to see peoples' work flow with this tablet. Are a lot of people rocking the note 3 or 4 to have s note and scrapbook sync on both devices? I ask because I was wanting to upgrade my current phone. Typically I go for a near vanilla andriod for my phone like a nexus or moto x, but now that I have this tablet I've been considering one of the notes. Would it be worth it? I see features like handwriting and multiwindows working much better on a 10 or 12 in screen vs a 5.7 in screen, so perhaps this is simply some ocd kicking in on my part.
Note 4. Just because. Lol. I don't use S note , I use papyrus, but they sync nicley
Note 3.
I've never touched S Note or Scrapbook. I use Evernote, Lecturenotes and Sketchbook Pro.
I came from a Nexus 4 and I'm now using a T-Mobile Note 4 on AT&T as my daily driver. Haven't rooted it yet but intend to once I sort out porting over my company phone number to my personal account (in the transition stage from company provided phones to a bring-your-own-mobile program). The Nexus 4 is now just for my work emails.
I've never gotten into S-Note and Scrapbook. I just don't find that I need them for my typical use case but I did play with scrapbook to see if things sync across via Samsung Account and they do. I would imagine S-Note through Evernote would sync too but I don't like jumping through hoops so I don't bother. I use Lecturenotes for all of my note taking now and I sync that to my Dropbox using Dropsync. I'm able to access my notebooks just fine on either device so thats great.
Note Pro has me spoiled when it comes to multiwindow support. IMO its just not very useful on the Note 4. Pop open two windows and then try to use a keyboard and its just a mess LOL . . I guess its fine for watching a video while surfing or something but I don't do that personally so . . meh . .
One thing I can say about the Note 4 is that having one makes me long for an update to S-Pen features on the Note Pro. Smart select and text selection features are fantastic and will make you think "Damn, this is how it should have been all along . . "
xperia z ultra
Can you sync papyrus the same way you can sync lecture notes (dropsync)?
It sounds like a lot of people do have note phones, but that it's strictly for the hardware. That makes sense, it is one of the fastest phones with the best screen year after year. But the software and multiwindow features seem less useful. Do you guys write much on your phones? I've gotten use to and enjoy writing on my tablet, but I think it would be a lot harder to do it on a phone where I wouldn't be able to rest my wrist anywhere.
It sounds like it might be best for me to start using something like lecture notes or papyrus, then load it on to whatever phone I get. That way I could do all my writing on my tablet, but be able to reference my notes from my phone still.
Sidenote, after reading your posts I started messing around with my apps for taking notes. I realized that with air command off, you can draw shapes and clip part of the screen, then share it to any app you wish. I like that a lot more than the scrapbook option through air command.

You probably can but I haven't been successful with it yet. Papyrus saves its data in a secure location that requires root access to get to it but from what I can tell Dropsync can't see it. I haven't spent any time trying to see if Dropsync can access root though . . I'm sure if there are other sync products out there that get root access then one could use that instead. Unfortunately while Papyrus supports Box and Dropbox it's only for file opening or saving type stuff and not for the storage of your entire notebook database. If it did that (allow you to select a path where all Papyrus data would reside in your Dropbox) that would be sweet.

Writing on the phone is challenging, I do it once in a while for quick text messages and whatnot but yeah I agree that without a place to rest my palm on there's no way to do extended writing sessions. Honestly though if I know I'm going to need to take notes in a meeting then my Note Pro comes with me. The Note 4 is more for availability of my stuff when I didn't anticipate the need of the tablet.

Sidenote, after reading your posts I started messing around with my apps for taking notes. I realized that with air command off, you can draw shapes and clip part of the screen, then share it to any app you wish. I like that a lot more than the scrapbook option through air command.

You don't have to turn off Air Command to do screen clipping; instead just click and hold the button on the stylus BEFORE you bring it near the screen, then bring the tip to the screen to draw a marquee around what you want to clip, let go of the stylus button once you're done and the selection popup window should appear.

Oh sorry, still new to the site in general. I figured the thread was more on the general topic of news on products(note 4 and this tablet vs. Something like a nexus 6), Samsung's ecosystem (especiallywith the spen) , etc versus a straight how do I get X rom/app/adapter to work.
Hi all,
I am really turn between the LG G3 and the NOTE 4
in my country, the price difference is about 250$
my "fear" regarding the NOTE 4 is that i wont really use the S PEN
I feel that its a cool thing to play with for about a week and then forget about it.
i saw lots of reviews and the main thing i saw were:
write phone numbers and name to put as a contact- seems like an action i do once a month. tops
send screen shots- nice but not an everyday task for me.
doodle- not relevant for me
all pen apps are for samsung apps and not for GMAIL and so...??
So.... am i missing something?
if any of you feel like sharing what you really do with the s-pen, especially as a student or at work (engineer) it will be really great.
My phone use profile consists off:
- i rarely use the cell for talking
-a lot of browsing- looking up for articles (as a student or at work)
-GMAIL
-WHATSAPP
-games: rarely
THANKS

It totally depends on you personally and what you use your device for.
Personally i use the S-Pen everyday - taking notes in meetings, i even use it for sketching and drawing. There's some pretty awesome drawing and painting apps available allowing me to be creative anytime and anywhere.
It also comes into it's own for usual OS tasks, selecting text, multiple documents, images, copying etc
I even sometimes just use it instead of my finger for usual stuff too, i dont really see the issue of people saying they would hardly use it, almost like it's some chore to take it out...
I feel that the S-Pen actually makes me use my device a lot more than i usually would! I don't think i could ever use a device without it going forward!
Cheers

I see lots of people being that positive about the S pen, Yet I own the note series since the beginning. each time a new generation came, I was interested by the Spen features. However I don't use it as much as I thought I would be.. I don't know why, maybe its cause I suck at drawing
As a student you could take notes from classes on the note4, ye I know, small screen. Backup everything at every save so you don't loose any page or note. But you have to try it yourself. If you have a budget dilemma then go for the g3.
I'm a visual manager for a retail store. I use my Note 4 and it's S pen daily. I'm constantly making To Do lists and writing notes to myself. So that's actually why I got my Note 4. I always have my phone with me in my pocket, so it's easier to take it out and jot down some things than to carry a pen and paper... which I'll eventually have to set down in order to do something and then leave it there until either someone else finds it or I end up running around the store looking for where I put it.
I also use the S pen to sketch up floor plans. I even take photos of an area and make notes on it.
"Move this here" (using a drawn arrow to point from the object to the new location)
"Get rid of this" (X something out)
"Paint this wall yellow. This one blue."
Etc
I also use the S pen when I'm eating my lunch and don't want to get the screen all dirty with my messy fingers lol.
The honest truth is that if you're going to use the S pen for JUST writing down phone numbers or something, then you won't be utilizing it's full potential. In that case, why spend the extra money?
I'd suggest only get the Note 4 if you truly do a lot of writing that doesn't have to be on paper (such as having to submit hand written notes to someone). If you need to write a lot, and have no issue with the notes being digital (or printed from a printer), then this phone is worth it.
I actually had an LG G Pro and was very happy with it, but the phone didn't have a stylis. I ended up making the decision to get the Note 4 and so far, I'm quite happy with my decision. It sure as heck beats carrying a pen and paper around!
Yep I use the S-pen maybe once every two days. I use it when I come across complicated websites (ability to use it like a mouse is good), and when I RDP into PC's as it gives mouse like accuracy compared to fat fingers.
Although I would actually give up the spen for a slightly smaller screen. I watch a lot of videos and browse the net a lot and the screen size is fantastic. But it's living with it which gets to me. It's just so big, having it in your pocket is extremely noticeable. Sitting down with tight pants is super uncomfortable and even just taking it out of your pocket you realise how big it is. I came from an S4, perhaps my next phone will be 5.5" or less. I still enjoy using my S4 (wifes phone now), and do miss the size of it. Hope that helps you.
i use the s-pen as a notebook. write all you want and hit print for hardcopy. you can actually print from the note 4 directly over wifi.
Note 4 caused me to remove all paper from my home office. I write all work notes in LectureNotes. I also use it as notepad after work - for new words, sentences, reminders and todos.
For university note taking I prefer a tablet with stylus (I use Note 10.1 for that - I wrote hundreds of pages on it).
Besides s-pen, Note4 is the only phone working with Gear VR (snapdragon versions so far)

I use the S-Pen for everything. I rarely is my finger. The S-Pen is so much easier to use when typing, tapping on links on a web page, playing games, etc. And the screen doesn't get smudged up.
Thank you all!
this is exactly what i was looking for, if anyone else wants to add his experience, it will be great.
still not so sure why writing on a screen with a pen is more comfortable than typing a screen keyboard.
I guess I'll visit SAMSUNG store and play with it a bit
That little Wacom pen is THE reason why I only consider the Galaxy Note line as my smartphone of choice. It's that important.
Jot down notes in OneNote just like on my Tablet PCs (thank god they finally added ink support!), sketch things in Clover Paint, work as a mouse substitute for those pesky mouseover navigation bars on Web sites, maybe even serve as an external drawing tablet with the right software; it's like having a Tablet PC in the palm of my hand, just with Android instead of WIndows.
I admittedly don't use it on the keyboard. There's no reason for me to do so when the sheer width of the screen makes it easy for me to just use my fingers, especially compared to the old Galaxy S3 I was stuck with for the last two years. The Graffiti input panel (remember Palm OS?), on the other hand, would work really nicely with the pen if I decide to use that again.

Sometimes its quicker to write a note than type. Sometimes you want to circle typet text to call it out.
Maybe you want to sketh a diagram. Pen is more accurate than finger.
Got a pdf file you want to write a note in? Or take a picture then circle something in the picture?
Just a few of many possibilities.
