if you dont like having complete control of your device, then rooting is bad, very bad. stay away from it. because root will give you complete control of your device. me i like root, because i like being in complete control
Rooting isn't bad on a nexus device, the process of doing it on other devices that are locked down can be a little dangerous. I bought my Nexus two months ago and never had a problem with screen lift.
Never had a problem with a Rooted device, its like getting admin rights on your computer.
Screenlift is fine if you don't have it from the unboxing, you don't have screen lift.
If you can't get WiFi connection, I suggest you don't buy a N7 (FLAME ME NOW!) haha.
First thing i did after unboxing : root and unlock my N7
I want complete control over my device! There's nothing bad with it.
But no wifi connectivity for a "wifi-only" device? There are UMTS dongles that work with the N7, but dont you want a device with integrated UMTS?

Thats why am eagerly waitin for the 3g version of the 32gigs version
Rooting is very easy. Especially since this is a Nexus device.

I think you'll be waiting a while for that.
They haven't even rolled out the 32GB version yet, let alone any versions with 3G connectivity.
Like I said if you can't get WiFi in your area, there are only 2 options, either constantly tether it with another device you have that has data connections, or try to get a compatible dongle.
Otherwise I would either get another tablet, or wait however long it takes Google to release a 3G version

rather than trying to mess about with a USB 3G Dongle, which may or may not work as it is not supported out of the box, why not get one that also has wifi capabilities?
a quick ebay search found this for $30

I would get a tab that is capable of what you need.
The Nexus 7 clearly the tab for you, as much as I love the N7 and would choose the N7 over anything, this is a logical recommendation to you.
A wifi device needs wifi, simple as that.

I think he meant to say as much as he loves it and would choose it over anything else it is a illogical choice for you. Especially since underneath he says a WiFi tablet needs WiFi simple as that. I think he just had two critical typos. If you cant get WiFi then you would really have a worthless device. Idk how it works in India but most free WiFi hotspots in america don't allow large downloads off their WiFi so you really wouldn't even be able to load it with games. Honestly there is nothing you can really do with the N7 without internet connectivity. You could get a MiFi type device that would emit your own personal WiFi signal but you have to pay a monthly fee from your cell phone service provider if they even offer it at all.

I know a few people around here are carrying Tabs around on a day-to-day basis and I was wondering what people's opinions were of the practicality of using the Tab as a primary device, to replace a phone as opposed to complementing it.
I'm not looking to carry two devices or to pay for a second data SIM, so without being rude I'm not particularly interested in how well the Tab complements other devices, only in how sensible an idea it is to use the Tab as my main phone.
I mean, I know that if I were to get the Tab, I'd probably need a spare handset to use on the odd occasion when I didn't want to or couldn't take the Tab with me but when I could take the Tab, I wouldn't be looking to carry a second device at the same time.
This all ties in to a thread I started in the 'General' section addressing the general issue of what phone to get.
I think of the options I mentioned in that thread, that I'm drawn most to the Tab because it would best suit my needs/use but the size/practicality is, understandably I feel, a concern.
Anyway, any/all feedback will be greatly appreciated.
You are not mental.
I use it as a phone every day with a BT headset and have no problem whatsoever .
The only occasion I will not use it as a phone is when I go out and I need something that fits in my pocket without sticking out.

You're not alone. It's reasonable to use a bluetooth headset 1st, speakerphone 2nd and holding up to your ear 3rd. I predict 7" will be the new trend, large enough to make it easier to read but still pocketable in a man's jacket or lady's purse.
You can't hold again your head FYI. the earpiece isn't there on the tab.
clubtech... where did you get your unlocked phone and what did you pay if you don't mind sharing...
I'm looking for the least expensive unlocked quadband phone and so far the lowest price is ~$900 US.
thanks..
I use it is my primary phone and though it.is a bit cumbersome i dont mind it.
I need a good bluetooth headset with caller display though - can anybody recommend one?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
You can hold it to your head, you just need to put it upsidedown as the speakers are on the bottom of the phone, and when you use it that way the microphone will be right next your mouth.
I used it in this way a pair of time, you just need to lower the volume as the tab will automatically go in speaker phone mode when you don't have a paired bluetooth or wired headphone.

I just wonder how are you using it as a phone!
I live in the U.S.A, California. And my understanding that the Galaxy tab can't be used as a phone! The Galaxy tab is being release here with in 2 weeks!
I'm just wonder if there's a way that I could use it as a phone? Doe's any one here have any suggestions???
US models can't be used as a phone, EU ones can.
It's unclear whether the difference is hardware- or software-related.
So it's maybe possible that a US unti could be modded to make/receive calls or it may be impossible. Alternatively, you could procure an unlocked EU unit but you may have issues regarding network compatibility depending on your provider.

tmobile is starting on the 10th that when we will know if it can make calls or not, ill know by night fall. lol
The short answer is: Yes. You should use it with a wireless/Bluetooth headset.
well, I for one gonna use it as a main phone
don't care how dorky it gonna looks like, especially if you're only in your office, or in your cubicle, or in your house
who cares
Bluetooth can always be there when you go out
thanks to clubtech for sharing his experience too, i finally decided to use this as my main
i got mine today, hopefully can use it soon enough since i'm on a remote area now
Devices with phone capabilities and multitasking will change the world.
Now, I can have Skype, Nimbus, Fring or whatever, running in background and ACTICE.
That means i can also receive calls without while the application is in the background.
From now, my availability on the VOIP equals the availability on the phone and the answering method is the same (Skype on the computer requires headset)
This means i will use VOIP more and more.
The idea of paying a voice call depending of distance is so obsolete !!!
Traditional telephony will decline.
I hope, in 5 years, the traditional telephony will be like analog telephony today
I believe that in few yeas will pay only a data plan, and telephony and TV will be over IP.

I hope one of you guys can make it work as a phone!
I live in the U.S.A, California. I'm waiting to see if ATT or T-Mobile Galaxy tablet can be used as a phone!
I hope there's a APP that can be added ( like a VOIP app )can be used to work as a phone! I want to purchase the Galaxy tab , but I needed to work as a phone also! I know there's many people that need this also.
I just don't why !!! Samsung didn't allow the tablet to be used as cell phone here in the U.S.A.!
There is, apparently, an unlocked North American model that will arrive early next year which should, I think, allow calls.
The reason why none of the ones being sold by the various US networks will make calls is that the networks do not allow it.
If you want to apportion blame, then the bulk of it should fall upon the networks.
It's hard to see the logic behind that decision. Voice and data plans tend to pull in more revenue than data only plans, I can only imagine that the networks think you need to be forced into carrying both a phone and a tablet, when in reality most would choose that anyway.

Dave

Hi, I'm not really sure how the GT works. Can I for example put a normal phone sim in it and use the data allowance on that sim?
I use internet, games and multi media first on my devices and calls way, way second so I think the Tab would be good for me as an all in one device but I cant get it on a normal phone monthly contract just a stupid data one. My plan would be to buy it off contract and then get a "3" sim that comes with unlimited data and free minutes and txt. Would this work ok or is there another device better?
Many Thanks

Hi,
It is possible to use it as phone but it's not very handy because of the bigness -> not comfortable to hold while phoning. But for games and movies it would be no bad solution.
But I would buy a netbook, you can do much more with it...

I understand what you mean but the most important thing for me is all in one device. Even if its crappy as a phone that's fine as long as i can use it. The way i see it is with a simple blue tooth head set it doesn't really matter what size the device is.
The Galaxy Tab is the perfect all-in-one device at the moment. I'm enjoying mine too much, actually.

Pretty much everywhere outside North America, the Tab ships with phone functionality enabled and no carrier restrictions except for SIM locks when bought under contract.
I presume the OP is in the UK, in which case they'll have no issues doing as they plan. I travel frequently in Europe, and tend to swap prepaid data and voice SIMs in and out of the Tab regularly without issue.

Hello!
I am from Germany and am using the Galaxy Tab as a full mobile phone and mp3Player replacement for 4 Month now! The only Point is, that i have to choose jeans with enough big pockets to fit the tab in!
So when you say, that calling is at second priority, then i really can recommend it to you!
I just love this over sized phone. Lol. When I bought my tab, I had to buy a sling bag so that I can carry it around and with bluetooth, I had no problem taking my calls. Emails and messaging on the go is now normal to me. Anything that I will need on the go, tab works fine for me.
Of course if you think 7" is a bit large, go for smaller phone like galaxy s. Comparatively, if you need better power, go for laptop or netbook but as you know it, they are heavier.

The battery life of the GT is even a lot better than some laptops.
Bluetooth headset with screen is fine, but it's kinda big to carry around all the time.
Thanks for all the input. Ive got a couple more months with my HTC HD2 and the Gtab looks like my top runner for an upgrade.

i hesitated at start if to replace my Nexus one with the tab, and after doing so i don't regret it one bit.
it is by far the best device i had in terms of usability, the big screen allows me to see clearly and quickly without having to concentrate on what i'm searching for.
have an A2DP bluetooth headset, wearing Jeans most of the time so have no problem putting it in my back pocket.
I see the last question like mine was back in May so a couple of months have passed. I got an opportunity to buy a XOOM from a friend in the US. I am from Europe so my first Q' is > Will the 3G work here?
Can i connect cameras, USB sticks and download data as Mass Storage? < this will mean a lot. If not which one can do this?
Any other problems and extra features since it came out>? I know SD card works now but that's about it.
Thanks in advance.
Everything should work except for the 3G its using CDMA

honestly personally i think wifi model is enuf...i hav a wifi xoom n a dell streak 5 for a phone...n u jst use wifi tethering form the streak wen i need to...so think about it...n u'l b saving sum money too...xoom is the best...n once u get it thru the xda road...no galaxy tabs 10.1 or otherwise or even ipad 2s can touch it... again, my personal views...
I guess Xoom will be the lucky winner. Too bad 3G is CDMA... only< obviously... my mind was hoping when i wrote the article i guess. Still i had a preety sweet offer, my home internet provider gives every "Gold like" package owner a sim with free access. ( wireless internet is kinda expensive here/ limited) As i live in the capital signal should have been full. Wireless tether is ok of course.
Still i see little development> Custom ROMS but although new devices are around the corner i don't have the funds.

If you root and install custom rom or kernel that supports usbOTG, yes, you can connect thumb drive and large HDD. Camera is possible, but some work (Canon???) while others don't. There is a DSLR thread some where that goes into more detail.
Honeycomb source code has not been released by Google, which is what is holding back more development. But honestly, my Xoom does just about everything I would want.
It's a terrific device.
stock 3.2 now supports OTG, so yes you can use ur thumb drives or external hdd directly out of the box...as for cameras...some work direct...some need an app from the market to work...rest u might hv to dig around...
thanks, i think the camera should work because it is like a generic usb device.
I saw Tiamat Rom's and it's awsome, can't wait to try it. will buy one this month.
Anyway. Thanks for the Info. Xoom really is the best Android tablet and if the next XOOM appears next year with quad core i can still sell mine here in Romania ( as everything is pretty expensive here) for a good price and than add some extra $ for another one from the US.
Hey guys I have a new Galaxy S3 and want to set it up to receive wifi from my cable internet connection in my home. Will this router work?

802.11 is a standard and as such your phone should connect to any manufacturer's device. WiFi does NOT count towards your TMO usage. Check the S-III forums for any specific issues connecting to WiFi from your phone. Some phones exhibit some problems with specific security configs.
BTW - router best solution. You can add/remove devices from your network at will. Most flexible and forgiving IMHO.

that router will work fine with cable internet, but hopefully for $50 you could get a better brand... check the stores for a low-end cisco router... and since you're looking for info, it'll be hooked up between the modem and computer, so it can 'route'... you'll have to use her PC for the setup process...
so you need a modem too? motorola... base what you get on your speeds and docsis specifications in your area...
I was looking at that router because it had the best and most reviews on amazon and many said it was a bargain but I dont know...I saw many routers that were $150 or more and then others that were like $70 or $80 so the one I linked seemed to be quite cheap
As far as a modem I already have one that the cable company provides...have a router too but its not wireless thats why I need a new one for wifi.

About the only real technical advice I have from being at Comcast for 2 years is to remind you to power cycle the modem when hooking anything different to it... it keeps a memory of the MAC address of the current device connected and won't connect to anything else without pulling the power cord for about 10 seconds... sometimes you have to do it a second time after hooking up the router and PC and powering up the router... Then running the CD on the PC will work or you could follow the manual for its manual setup...

Man I'll just be honest, when I was doing phone support for comcast, and I asked what router they had, and I was told tenda, or medialink, the headset immediately got flipped around so I could laugh my @$$ off... just seems be more issues with cheaper brands, such as having to powercycle more often, or you won't get your full bandwidth, also, they're smaller companies, so support with firmware updates won't be as good... The best router I ever owned was a Cisco E1000... an older model, but Wireless-N... It's still going, just at my sister's house, I had to upgrade due to a bandwidth increase with my internet and I needed a 5ghz side as well, to accommodate it over wifi... I saw a refurb E1000 on amazon earlier for 19.99 but I didn't post it just because I'm not a fan of refurbs... and yea, the guy earlier said he a WRT54g with DD-WRT custom firmware loaded, and thats great and all, but G? Seriously?? You'll want an N router, and have enough customization in its interface to limit its radio to G/N or possibly N-only if everything is Wireless-N... I'll help you setup whatever you buy if you want...
+1. Right on point. Cheap means you can replace it more often. Stick with a name brand.

Seriously?? You'll want an N router, and have enough customization in its interface to limit its radio to G/N or possibly N-only if everything is Wireless-N... I'll help you setup whatever you buy if you want...

Thanks man. I was hoping to spend less but was considering the Linksys E3200 here:
http://www.amazon.com/E3200-High-Pe...&qid=1346283467&sr=1-2&keywords=linksys+e3200
What do you think? Seems reviews are mixed on ALL the routers, including all the name brand ones. They all have a decent share of bad reviews which makes it really hard to chose one! I mean for example the one above has 196 reviews that are 4-5 stars but 94 reviews that are 1-3 stars. Call me crazy but in 1 out of 3 are not too happy with it, I don't see that as a good thing, but this is actually one of the better reviewed ones! lol
Used Linksys (Cisco), DLink and Netgear. Linksys has lasted the longest but they all work.
Still Charged Up
Ok so we have had many threads about our fears form verizon and what they will do to this beautiful machine. So i decided to start a thread and hopefully collect all of our questions to the dare devils who pre ordered , so when they get the phone they can perhaps better answer our questions. SO thank you in advance to any one who can contribute, whether it be more questions , or answers when the time comes !
1-Does it have the nagging wifi and gps icons ?
2-can we still have the ability to disable ANY app we want , as in other versions of note 3 , innately and not using any root method ?
3-can we surf and talk on 3g ?
4-can we simultaneously use bluetooth and aux ? phone calls routed to bluetooth when a call comes while auxiliary is plugged in ?
5- feature of moving app to sd still there , or disabled ?
6-anyway to disable 4g without root ?
7-Will Verizon cover the wireless charging ports like they did on the note 2?
the point of all these questions is whether we can deal with the phone stock, if god forbid , root is never realized , then we gotta love it the way its made.
Sometimes its hard to test all these functions in store, so the help is much obliged
any one else want another question answered , pm me, and i will edit the post and try to add the answers if new owners are kind enough to tell us !

The question really is why wouldn't they. It said in another thread they'll have the wireless back plate s view cover. I just went into a Verizon store and the rep said they would have both variants, the regular s view and wireless backplate

On the note 2 sprint and Verizon covered them up. I see sprint did not cover them up on the note 3. Hoping Verizon does not either

I think you're confused... What they're trying to say by stating that the contacts were covered up on the note 2 is that they were inaccessible without modifying the phone physically.
they are not covered up, Verizon computer system has a skew for wireless charging plate and wireless s view cover. The dang wirless s view cover is almost $100!!! wtf
$100? Someone @ Verizon has been sniffing glue again.
Any would you want to disable 4g?

1- to save battery in low 4 g signal areas
2- to ensure data limit is not reached in 1 day
3-to have consistency of signal while traveling across 3g and 4g spots , since we dont know how this phone will handle 3g to 4g and vice versa
Good to know, since I'm still using a dinosaur.

If they're covered up, the wireless charging stuff won't work.... What don't you get about that? There's nothing you can buy to make wireless charging work with the contacts covered up except maybe a dremmel tool...

Verizon may have screwed me. I worked out details about getting N3 this weekend, a few months ahead of upgrade date, but barely within REAL 20 month window... as of Saturday was supposed to have been pending shipment. Called today to get tracking info and rep said order was never placed. I'm *IRATE*. Have been a VZW customer since 1996, willing to shell out $300 for a phone & renew for another 2 years,
The chances of me getting the N3 on launch day are now between slim and zero. Any VZW employees on here wanna be a hero and take up my cause? It would seem I was straight-up lied to.

--UPDATE-- 10/8
After another two phone calls and a lot of .... sticking to my guns... I now have an order confirmation # and am expecting the phone either Friday or Monday. So not launch day, but okay.

So every one keeps saying stay away from samsung for this reason , and by every one I mean real big time developers. Chain fire, and Adam Outler, but what should i get instead that has a stylus, that big screen and these specs ?
Just got my note 3
