Using Nova Launcher - Galaxy Note II General

I am thinking of using Nova Launcher, but wondering if I will loose any functionality. Does any one know if this is the case?

Try it and let us know!!

I'm using it. You don't lose a great deal - page buddy and the very nice weather widgets are all I can think of that make a daily difference. All the big features still work, including multi-view.
You get rid of most of Touchwiz though, which is a massive advantage.

@ekerbuddyeker - am trying it, but as this is my first Samsung device (only got it today), and never used any of the Samsung features before; I wouldn't have known if I was missing out on anything. Thanks for your contribution though
Seems to be running well so far. Just reading up on "Page Buddy" to see if I think I need it (Thanks Robster83 for that info).
The main advantages of Nova so far are that I can increase the amount of rows and columns on the desktop. I have just come from Paranoid Android on the Galaxy Nexus and with the large screen and default DPI everything on the Note 2 looks VERY BIG. Also finding the swipe down gesture to open up the notifications useful as my fingers struggle to get to the top of the screen when holding the phone in one hand.

Im using Nova and I think its a better option. I can still get Snote to open when I remove the pen so for me losing page buddy doesn't matter. The extra customization is well worth it.

+1 to nova here, much better than tw

Nova is pretty good although does anyone know how to get the S Planner Calendar Widget working with it? The S Planner Calendar widget is so much more advanced than the standard calendar widget and it kinda sucks for that to be the one thing that gets removed when I use Nova.

SPlanner is built into the TouchWiz Launcher, making it impossible to get the widget on anything else other than stock launcher.

I agree with everyone here. Definetly a +1 for Nova over TW.
But since I had page buddy setup to launch Rocket player when my headphones were attached, it seems as though it is locked into that setting. I tried going back to the TW environment to turn it off but it didn't work

Go Launcher is a better option for me, than any other launcher, I would urge those who haven't tried it to give it a go. Loads of customisation possible and the go ex notification add-on is nice.
In terms of calendar widget. Ive also tried loads and best I have found is Pure Calendar Widget.

+1 on Pure Calendar. Also Wizz widget is fine, also free.

I know its not a calendar thread, but if you have already mentioned calendars, then Business Calendar Free!

I'm using nova for two years. After installing it I immediately delete touchwiz launcher. Best launcher I ever tried.

Looking for a nice home screen calendar widget

As the title says really.
I have downloaded loads off the market place but all fall short.
I need a 4x1 widget that will display from my Exchange calendar and show my next couple of appointments.
The built in one seems to have a mind of it's own and gets confused when I have all day appointments/
I have found Smooth Calendar which is as close as I have found so far but it is clunky and slow.
Any suggestions?
i need one too i really miss the mini calendar view of sense ui!
Pure calendar is the best I found.

Have you tried Jorte?
ik like calwidget
i use jorte with no problems. tried it?
Jorte = No 4 x 1 option - Shame as it looks quite nice
Cal Widget = For some reason when in 4x1 mode it chops the last line of text short but besides that, looks OK (not sure if it any better than Smooth Calendar though)
Pure Calendar - Not tried that as it's a paid for app and so far I have resited the urge to pay for stuff on this phone.
there is always warez
Actually I realized there was a transparency option in Cal Widget so now it still chops off the bottom line but doesn't look as bad.
I am going to leave this on my home screen for a few days and see how it plays out.
Try Calendar pad Pro....
Try "android agenda widget"
I warmly recommand "Pure calendar" for the quality of the application and the skills of the dev. He is also working on an API to make scrollable widget, wich is essential for a calendar application.
If you don't want to spend 0.99Euros ( close to 1 dollar) for such a perfect application, you may try "Android agenda widget" that is free and the developer is really responsive and come with a lot of good stuff. I also suggest to donate because that worth.
Try to use gemini calendar. This is realy good calendar replacement and have simple widget.

I had the same criteria and after days of search I discovered the smooth calendar widget
It's 1 by 4, highly customizable (eg what calendars to display etc) and not cluttered with redundant skinning.
I already place two of the widgets for each my calendars...just because it's wicked.
+1 for Pure Calendar
I know you said you'd prefer a free app but this has many customisable features, with widget sizes to accommodate most screen layouts. It also has support for displaying Tasks (Astrid or GTasks).
Personally, this would be in my top 3 essentials apps.
I use Jorte, and it has both 4x1 and 1x4. The 4x1 is called 4x1 Horizontal.

Very nice recommendation, Smooth Calendar Widget totally suit my needs and it feels lightweight.
So is pure calander better then smooth calander? I need a widget that is bigger and shows more events

It's a real pitty that Jorte does not work with Exchange.
Does anyone know of anything similar for exchange? Ideally I am looking for two separate widgets, 1 for an agenda list and another for a month grid view that unlike the HTC Sense Widget actually shows you details of the appointments on the days (like Jorte).
Any suggestions.
love launcher pro plus widget

For those that like and use TouchWiz

I thought I just throw it out here since there are so many people complain about how bad touchwiz is.
What do you like about TouchWiz interface on Galaxy S?
One thing I really like is how music players stack up onto the pull down taskbar as well as on the lock screen where you can stop, change track and play your musics without unlocking your phone.
I only like the lock screen missed call or missed sms notification.
Other than that it's crap.
I use adw for everything else.

Sliding across the notifications bar to adjust brightness.
The Touchwiz Corporate Email client is MUCH better than stock Android. Much.
The Notification panel is the best stock panel on Android, and nothing aftermarket even comes close.
The stock Clock application has a great "Smart Alarm".
Task Manager, which is just a long-press of the Home button away.
Built in "My Files" application, no need to download something like Astro.
Memo and Mini Diary are quite useful.
Very solid SNS integration into Contacts, complete with pictures.
A pretty damned good stock dialer.
A pretty good stock keyboard (and Swype too!)
The best stock Music Player IMHO. Equalizer presets!
The best stock Video Player, bar none. Divx, MKV, AVI, it plays them all.
AllShare actually works, and is actually useful and fun.
Ability to change system fonts on the fly, and to download or create your own.
Road SMS just for ****s and giggles.
Integrated Calendar (Exchange, Google, etc.)
Car Home and Desk Home launchers are nice.
How friendly TW3.0 is to 3rd party launchers.
I'm sure there's more, but the long and short of it is, TouchWiz 3.0 is pretty damned good. I don't use the TWLauncher either, but most of that is habit, having used ADW and LauncherPro for months.

I love TW3.0 I've tried all other launchers and they dont really compare to the functionality that TW3.0 offers altho most of the launchers are just home screen and application drawer replacements.
My only gripe is that samsung should have added a msg counter on the messaging icon like on the wave... everything else is great for me!
Nothing of these things have to do with touchwiz. Im on launcher pro and can do the same. The only thing missing are the samsung widgets.
Ps. On launcher pro you get msg and call counter in the dock icons
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
What i like in TW3.0 is that apps are divided to pages. I don't like scrolling, scrolling and scrolling to find my apps in other launchers. I know on which page i have app that i need right now so i jump quickly there and launch it.
I tried ADW Launcher and LauncherPro but don´t like them. They feel a lot more incomplete and slower compared to TW3. I can´t complain about the speed of TW3 and i really like the the Screenlock, and the notifications for missed calls and sms
Twlauncher isn't the only part of the phone that's changed by TouchWiz, as listed above.
I also use LauncherPro, mainly because I prefer its vertical sliding application list, but the notification icons and integration with media players is nice. I have no argument with the lock screen either - again, the music player integration is useful. The Task Manager in newer builds is also pretty decent and good to see in a stock ROM.
The TouchWiz customisations you can't remove/bypass are pretty good, and because you can change default handlers in Android, it's no big deal to use alternative launchers and applications. I was concerned about not having HTC Sense, but happy with this.
I currently switched from LauncherPro to TouchWiz recently, just because I like variation. I might use ADW instead next week. There's nothing bad about TouchWiz to make me not use it. Nice to see other people supporting the stock software.
TouchWiz 3.0 is Good!!
I am not sure why there is so much of TouchWiz hate. But once one would come out of the "only Sense/ADW is good", they would really see what all functionalities have been added to TouchWiz to make it look good and actually work well.
I really like it.
And I really wonder if Sense can do this much!!

Agreed!
I like certain aspect of TW, sort of like the horizontal scroll applications page but wish there was a way to reorder things alphabetically without clearing the data. Manually sorting applications according to type etc. is useful but then sort of duplicates what the home screens are for. Like the icon display on TW as well with their button backgrounds as opposed to plain icons in Launcher Pro.
I think touchwiz is pretty good, one cool feature is sliding your finger left or right on a contact either calls them or composes s message! Until someone ports Sense to the SGS ill stick to touchwiz

I agree with you, but what do you mean by this? How do you adjust the brightness from the notifications bar?
This is probably some new addition like the task manager, right? I'm still using the JF3-firmware...
Think the touchwiz is pretty well thought out. I actually like it better then Sense tbh even though I figured I would miss sense after switchin to the sgs.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I love touchwiz that when I slide, if I touched the app icons first for like 0.2 sec and slide, it will still give me a slide.
If I do it on ADW or LauncherPro, it will act like I'm holding that icon. Like I hold icons from drawer to place at home screen.
I don't know how to explain this, my english is not very good. Hope you understand.

I am using Pure Calendar Widget, because it integrates with Got To Do, which is now defunct.
another +1 for smooth calendar here!
I was going through many different Widgets for various tasks. And then I tried launcher. It cut 10mb off my ram usage, also adds resisable Widgets (standard aswel), has a nice calander widget (I specifically bought it for this) and ads some sick customization. It is very stable too. Please note that this app completely replaces the stock launcher, and so will not even be cached on startup. There is a free version to try, but it is minus the Widgets you seek, but does have screen shots of them (in app). Sory if this seems off topic, but its just another consideration to take in with all the other very helpful suggestions.

Dunno about the HTC calendar but I'm using Android Agenda Widget which is very customizable, integrates with Astrid and GTasks (which in turn integrated with Google Tasks) and also displays your contacts birthdays.
It doesn't look very fancy but it works well!
Pure Calendar Widget vs Smooth Calendar
I just switched to Smooth Calendar from Pure Calendar. Pure Calendar is very functional and looks good unless you switch back and forth between landscape and portrait on your home screen. Regardless of the settings, in landscape Pure's widget gets horribly pinched and is not pleasant. I like Smooth because I really only want a good looking agenda widget; I prefer using the native calendar app for creation and editing.
On a side note, I really liked SPB Shell's calendar widget. Although the widget took an entire pane, it had both a good looking calendar and agenda. Ultimately, I uninstalled in favor of the better usability of ADW Launcher.
I like Android Agenda Widget.
1) Launcher Pro - built in
2) Colorize
3) Pure Calendar

Ditto. Load LauncherPro. You have to buy it to get the widget but it is cheap and worth it. Attached is a screenshot of my screen. Upper left is Friends widget which combines FB and Twitter feeds. Totally worth it.
I used LP 0.8.3 plus since I got the Xoom. Wasn't sure how it would turn out but I figured it couldn't hurt. It's been fanatastic. Have to tweak some small settings to make it snappier transitioning screens but it does the job well. The ability to stretch the Widgets and the additional Widgets makes it worth the effort. Feels very customized and it works great.

For those running Launcher Pro... Are you using the CNN stackable widget as well?
When I installed LP+ and would flip through the CNN widget stacks, I would constantly get Force Closes on Launcher Pro. I finally gave up on it... Maybe I will try again.
Anyone experiencing the same? Or different?
Thanks.
Cnn widget works fine for me (I have it resized a little smaller than what it looks like stock)

Launcher Pro looks nice. I'll have to try it.
Is it your birthday Keith? Happy birthday, if it is.
New to Android... so this could possibly be a dumb question.
When using the stock Twitter widget, it only displays one tweet at a time and isn't scrollable. When reading up on Launcher Pro, it said that you can resize and create scrollable widgets. Could I take the stock Twitter app, resize it, AND make it scrollable?
Thanks in advance.
Here is another question related to Launcher Pro... I have my screens setup and all is working well, however, the stackable widgets (CNN, Youtube, etc) do not automatically flip every minute.
I know this is not a big deal, however, I am guessing they also do not refresh every minute as well.
Anyone seeing the same thing?
If this is a known problem, I am assuming this will be fixed when LP+ is actually released to use the Honeycomb engine.

No.
LPP+ has a very nice twitter widget that is scrollable.
LPP+ does nothing to widgets that aren't LP widgets, other than allow you to resize them. The stock Twitter widget does not have the ability, that I've seen, to be scrollable, there for for me, it gets deleted.
Its very hard if not impossible to find LPP replacement widgets for the Calendar/Agenda, facebook, and twitter widgets. ADW an equally impressive launcher does not have these widgets, but has a couple other tweaks LP doesn't.
There are also themed versions for LPP+ and ADW which are very nice. I'm using a transparent theme, XTG and Love it.
Here's the thread for all the themed versions. Looks like he just added HC too. Make a backup of LP, delete it. Install the themed .apk and restore. Activation codes work and it really adds a nice touch.

Its sad that the stock Launcher is so inadequate. I really tried to like it but the lack of resizing the widgets is a complete fail imo.

First off, great information. Really appreciate it.
A few follow up questions:
What are the differences between LPP+ and ADW beyond widgets? Candidly scrollable widgets is my most pressing need at this time, but I'm interested in hearing about the other "tweaks".
Do you use both launchers at the same time?
How do these programs handle battery consumption?
Lastly, which do you recommend for use with Honeycomb?
Thanks again

would the colorize widget be scrollable on touchwiz or only for the previously mentioned launchers? ( I ask since touchwiz has other scrollable widgets.)
edit2: so i just tried to sign in with colorize and I got a suspicious activity alert, although i did get to play a fun guessing game at my friends photos to verify who i am.
edit: Also I just saw on appbrain the dev of visiual bookmarks also has visual contacts
Also if we are going for the look of sense the we need Fancy Widget v1.3 (picture) I can link it if it is not against the rules.
