I own several Samsung phones (from Spica to Galaxy S II)
They are all great but trust me, Samsung is quite bad at button quality. Hardware button becomes non responsive after a year of very careful usage. Even my ancient Nokia N95 has been abused for years but luckily all buttons are still working and are on top shape.
To preserve the life of our precious power button, it is a good idea to use the volume rocker instead (volume rocker tends to be very durable at times). I tried to port volume rocker wake but I seemed to be out of luck (its not working)
Any kind devs around here who could port volume rocker wake for stock roms? It might come in handy for many users out here (including me of course)...
Well, I either have good news or bad news...
If you are running Romswell v1.1, then you are in luck....Wake on Volume Mod
If you re NOT running Romswell v1.1...try flashing it
If you find that you want to revert back to "No Wake On Volume", Flash This
These Mods are CWM Flashable!!

Couple of days ago I noticed that my DHD's volume down button does'nt work anymore. First I didn't pay attention, thought that after restart it will be solved, but it didn't. The volume down function doesn't work in any software (up works just fine). Before I decide to go to warranty, what do you think, is it a software or hardware problem? There is no accidents or any damages happened, I know and physically the button seems to work. Please help!
Normally buttons are hardware, in your case its easy to tell.
remove the battery. Put it back in. Hold down the volume down then turn on the phone, if it starts normally your button is dead, if you get into bootloader mode it could be software and you should try reflash or wipe in settings

Im the same, except now my volume up doesnt work either

Thank you so much Blackhorse!
Although the first try didn't succeed (perhaps I didn't hold both volume down and power button long enough), the second try started the bootloader and I was able to use both volume buttons. After another boot the stock rom started normally and now my volume down function is back! Hopefully it stays so...
Hey guys,
My volume keys have died. Part of the wire strip that is connect to the buttons is torn.
Any ideas if there is a replacement upperboard yet?
having the same issue... going to try blackhorse's solution and see if it works
best regard
André
unfortunately it didn't work. I guess the volue down button is dead, even though I had absolutely no accidents with it.
does anybody have an idea of how to solve this, since I live in Brazil, but bought DHD in Germany?
any help would be very appreciated
best regards
André
same problem here, my buttons stop working. What I usually do then is lift the volume keys up slightly and slide some paper underneath to clean some dust and then usually it works again (for a while)
I have installed Clockwork Recovery Mod, when I boot into recovery mode, I get the menu, but cant figure out how to scroll. Any ideas?
I've tried all the buttons, and the only button that does anything is the power button, which just reboots.
Any help is appreciated.
use the volume up/down buttons to scroll, home button to select
Well those buttons don't work. It seems as though the recovery mode just becomes unresponsive as soon as it starts.
So my follow-up questions are:
1) What would cause the recovery mode to start, and then become unresponsive to the buttons on the tablet?
2) Is there any other way to flash a rom besides going into recovery mode?
I though the buttons weren't working too, until I pressed the power button a few times and they started to work
Well, on my droid i use the volume buttons and it should be same with all other phones
You got caught up in the S7 & S7 Difference just like I did. As best as I can tell, the recovery is for the S7 (non-slim) version of the tablet which has more physical buttons than the slim.
I'm living my new S7 (3 days old) but sad about the seemingly lack of development for such a sweet little device (for the price). Getting the launchers and such working might give me a enough drive to learn about making my own roms.
Oh speaking of launchers, make sure you enable "debugging" over USB. I made the mistake of installing launcher pro and rebooting. Thankfully debugging saved me (it locks up at the lockscreen with another launcher even installed but not 'defaulted').
New guy here!
I'm from holland and I have a 2009 hd2 which is currently running AOKP Milestone 5 SE
So this is my first guide and i'll start with something simple.
Eliminating those frustrating pocket unlocks and the screen turning on in your pocket which drains your battery.
The easiest option is to start using your volume rocker as a unlock button and removing all the front button mappings for waking your phone.
Your power button is still your lock button though.
1. Find out if your rom has any special rom options (e.g. rom control, some toolbox, cynogen mod options etc)
2. Go through those options and try to find something with volume wake, it's probably under lockscreen options.
3. If you have found the option enable it, if not you have to download WidgetLocker in the market it comes with the option in it.
4. Once you've tested it we can begin with disabling the front keys by downloading ButtonRemapper in the market.
5. Now when you're in the app, you are seeing a list of key numbers with their name and function behind it. key number 116 is the only one you need to keep on its original state, it is for the power button when the phone is unlocked.
6. Start by clicking a key and putting its state in NONE and press ok, now do this for the remaining keys, EXCLUDING 116.
7. Hit the apply button and see your hd2 hot rebooting
8. When the phone comes to its senses again, try it out!
Lock with your power button
Unlock with your volume rocker.
It almost feels like a modern android phone with the lock/unlock button on the top or side.
I hope you like it, because I really do!

Nice guide! Very similiar to my original mod here but you make it a bit more simplified xD
After removing WAKE and WAKE_DROPPED from the keys, clicking buttons doesn't wake the screen (as expected), but lights the buttons, and they stay lit forever (i.e. until the next unlock/lock).
Do you also experience the same thing? Any solution?

Yes this is normal, caused by a gpio wake lock from the kernel. No solution yet, I personally don't care as it drains a lot less battery than having your screen come on

gpio don't need wakelocks in kernel, when interrupt is raised, cpu exits suspend and services the raised gpio interrupt. This is problem with bad coding logic of the key's backlight driver, i will see what can be done in some days (really busy atm).

This is still kernel related though right? as it deals with the driver? And you really dont have to work on it its not that big of a deal, put it on lowwwww priority you do amazing work here so as it is
the most important thing is to not keep anything else metal and/or hard, in your pocket with the hd2. Items like batteries or keys

This idea is awesome, thank you!
I've customized it a little bit to save my power button (and so my touchscreen connector).
I've set all my hardware buttons to power, but without wake property.
Now, I can:
Lock with any hardware button
Unlock with volume rocker.
thanks a lots aha
Hello,
I have this strange problem. When i lock my phone, I put in in my pocket. There i accidentally push volume rocker a few times and when i unlock the phone it lags for about 7-10 seconds then does few vibrations (like it wants to make up for the volume rocker presses) and then everything works fine. It is not a mojor bug but it really annoys me, because the phone lags when you need it the most.
I also tried it in non pocket to confirm that it's true bug and it was true. A couple presses of volume buttons (when phone is locked) is enough to start those lags.
Phone: Huawei U8800 pro
Rom: cyanogenmod 7.2 RC0 geno
i don't use the wolume rocker wake, but every setting that includes haptic feedback is set on.

I had this too with an old MIUI ROM but no one knew what caused it...

Short Question:
basically i have a hd2 that has a broken power/end call button ,and no volume rocker at all , would it be possible to install android or updated WP on this phone without those buttons ?
Long Question:
from experience to go into a bootloader or some sort i would need to do a button combination , unless i can get into bootloader or recovery through the OS , i currently have a totally stock hd2 running on WP version - who gives a damn , i got this phone for free as-is and i was thinking of putting maybe gingerbread on this phone , if its possible to proceed without the buttons can i get some links or redirections ? also if its impossible to continue without the volume rocker or power button for android , how about an upgrade to wp 7 ? any type of upgrade would help this phone , thanks in advance
for the curious people i let the phone sit intill the screen locks , and to unlock it i just click any button , to power the phone on i do the method where you plug a usb first and then put in the battery , and for volume control i go into the menu and adjust the settings

i have seen people with this situation and helped them. so i'm gonna make a tutorial for everyone.
also with your conditions, installing wp would not work, as you need power button to enter bootloader.
regarding android, it could be hard for you, as volume buttons don't work, changing volumes should be hard. and so is locking the screen, but if you have a working proximity sensor, it should be easier.
Edit: started writing tutorial, should continue tomorrow
