Any Android users considering the new Nokia Lumia 920?! - Epic 4G General

Anyone considering to migrate over to Win8? I've always been a heavy Windows user, owned a android phone since the HTC Hero on sprint. But something about this phone really attracts me to it. Could be the best camera on a smartphone, the screen, battery, design, battery life, and the simpleness of Win8. I hope the Windows market catches up to android like android caught up to iOS.

Hell no. Ever.
Doubly so just after WP8 initial release. In the preview videos the phone lags quite a bit, despite the fact that it has a decent processor in it now. Even if you were going to get it I'd say wait for 8.1 or whatever.

Never ever. Android forever. Hey I just made a rhyme!

I don't willingly choose anything with winblows on it

I was really interested in the 920 cause the hardware looks awesome, but after hearing that windows phone lacks really basic apps like youtube I don't think the os is ready for primetime.

I saw a stabilization of video recording of this phone against the SGS 3 on a rc car, and it was smoother. Very nice cam.

Back on topic. I would NEVER get windows phone. Unless my only options were that or ios. Even then i might choose a dumb phone.

I am definetly interested simply due to the cam. but I doubt I'll actually get it since I am a stickler for a keyboard.

My poetry isn't up to date =P

I'm intrigued. My wife has the HTC Arrive and it's not a great sampling of the Windows Phone, but it is smooth and very intuitive. The only thing REALLY holding back from a windows phone was mentioned earlier and that is lack of apps. There are too many apps that I consider to be central to any smartphone experience and my wife has none of them. A really simple example is that our bank doesn't even make an app for the platform.
My next phone will still be Android (whatever the next Nexus turns out to be, very likely) but the phone after may see a change of platform, if of course WP8 survives that long.

I was definitely intrigued...if they would've kept the winmo ecosystem (was more power-user friendly than android!!) I think I would've...wp7-8 is too simplistic...well they haven't announced full feature list yet so hopefully they announce at least the start menu functionality and options from winmo6.5 with the beauty that is wp8 in HD!!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app

I don't know about the Lumia specifically, but my next phone will be running a Windows 8 kernel, yeah.
Android is feeling too iterative lately. People gush over specs that are meaningless as if these were desktops in the 90s and nobody figured out the megahertz myth yet. It's boring. I want to tinker with a platform that is more about integration than effort.
I'm interested in putting some apps together as a developer, and while the Google ecosystem is predictable, the upcoming cross-form-factor metro ecosystem is compelling in a way I'm excited about, and Google just doesn't care enough about Android to go down that path with it as passionately.

Google went off the wrong foot with GoogleTV which was surprising given the resources that they have. I have it and like it, but if I spent more time watching TV, I'd want a lot of improvements. The Chrome laptops and platform are not getting as much mainstream acceptance that they imagined they would get, though the Chrome browser is getting a wider audience (some gov agencies make it their standard browsers).
MS has quite some ways to catch up on the mobile market, not to mention the lack of interest in their platform from the open source community. Their most powerful leverage to the cross form-factor ecosystem is the foothold of the MS Office products. I think 2013 would see Windows 8 tablets/laptops gaining and making up considerable ground.

Heck no. Galaxy Note II is currently at the top of my list then possibly one of the new Nexus phones. Although I like Nokia, I could care less about Microsoft, had horrible experience with Windows Mobile and Windows Phone app availability is poor.

Uh, anyone who's ever spent even 30 seconds with a WP7 device will know WM6 has nothing in common with it whatsoever.
There are plenty of perfectly legitimate reasons to prefer Android, so it's kind of strange to pick such poor ones. I thought the open source community would've outgrown the 90s by now.

Ya know, the design and camera alone is something I don't see in any Android phone yet.

I was very much planning on it, before it came out as a 6 month AT&T exclusive, and I'm planning on moving to Verizon.
I'm a major windows ecosystem user/admin/programmer, and I think there's a really neat vision for integrating across the whole Microsoft ecosystem that'll be pretty cool if they can pull it off.
Android is just a little too much on the computer end, and not enough on the phone side. I've said that since my G1.

The iphone is one cheap silicone case away from being very very good hardware. Just buy an iphone (and a cheap case) if you want ios.
why would anyone in their right mind want to poison their evo with apple's software???
No is just good to have different things on a phone
What is it about iOS4 that you can't get on the EVO/Android? My brother has the iPhone4, & there is nothing he has that i couldn't find in the Marketplace.
If you're looking for something specific, i'm sure you can find an Android version of it.
Don't kill the OP
Come on guys, it's a legit question (even if it might seem pretty blasphemous to us). As for the original question, if you want to dual boot, there's potential to put any Open Source OS on just about any hardware. If you want to have a closed source OS (like iOS, WinMo, WebOS, Blackberry OS [oh dear God WHY?!], Mac OSX Leopard, etc...) on your hardware, you'll pretty much have that pre-installed on the device. That's why you can put Android onto the HTC HD2, but you can't put WinMo 6.5 on the EVO 4G.
Bottom line, if you want iOS4 + Android, you'll have to buy an iPhone if you even want a chance. I don't think they have it working yet, but I know they've ported Froyo to the older hardware, so it might just be a matter of time.
Forum reeks of fanboyism. Simple question required a simple answer. The evo is far from a perfect phone... If that was the case.. I wouldn't have to root it and play tricks on my battery just to make it last longer than 5 hours. Android wouldn't be where it is today if it wasn't how iOS changed the way we look at smart phones. And apps that aren't on the android? bejeweled 2, angry birds, words with friends, a half decent facebook app, espn score center is terrible on the droid as well... I could go on... Both phones have their flaws.but I can see why the interest in wanting a dual boot phone. more than likely not happening anytime soon if not at all.

right, out of the 85k apps in the market place, absolutely none of them are good for anybody whatsoever, which explains why no one downloads anything from the market anymore, and also explains why android is definitely not catching up to iOS.

You know, you don't have to be an Apple fanboy (or girl) to want to see if this can be done. It's like trying to solve a puzzle. I really wouldn't want an iphone, but hacking iOS4 onto an Android phone would be fun. And, there are some apps for the iphone that don't exist in the Android Market.
BTW, I have a Dell Mini 9 that runs Snow Leopard just fine. Am I in love with Apple? Not really, though I have an iMac, as well as Windoze boxes and Linux, too. I'm posting from Linux on my dual boot Aspire One, wirelessly tethered to my Evo. I think I'm gonna try the Ubuntu hack for my Evo next. It's all about choices.

Don't know why ppl always bashing the iPhone...for what it is it does it well..solid construction, great battery life, very good camera, tons more apps and games than android, sharp screen, and the best support (connectivity and accessories). Only downside to me is the small screen. If the iPhone 5 comes to sprint and with at least a 4 inch screen, I would trade my evo in a heartbeat. For a multimedia phone, it practically does everything well.

Sorry man but a phone that needs a rubber band around it or a special grip to get a signal doesn't fall under good construction to me. And I also hate how Jobs uses old technology and claims its revolutionary with each build. I think I hate Jobs and all his douch fallowers more than the iPhone itself. Just my 2 cents though. To each his own
Edit: and you can't really say multimedia without flash player.....

The problem with iPhone is iOS. Even after a JB the possibilites are far less than a stock unrooted Android. The reason most people root Android is not to enable certain things they were locked out of, but to run (and experiment with) custom roms.
Out of the box you can do tons with Android, like changing keyboards, launchers, photo galleries, handlers for sending files, widgets and tons more, that would never be possible on iOS.
iPhone + iOS is a synergistic combo that's very well designed, great usability, battery life and exceptional support from app developers and 3rd party accesories. But it is not a platform for people who like to customize their devices or need more control, and those limitations are not going away anytime soon.
Does every topic on these forums have to turn into flame fests about the iPhone or Sprints network or just general trolling?
Damn dude.

According to Google (whether or not you want to believe it is another story), the Nexus phones will still be a contest for developers. Just because Google owns Motorola doesn't (supposedly) guarantee that Motorola will be the exclusive Nexus manufacturer.
I really hope this is true, because I am sure this is a major thing manufacturers push for. They may not sell as well as some of the other phones out there, but they get a ton of clout and the developers are very quick to stand behind them. Anything that challenges companies to try to one-up each other is a great thing in my book. That is what drives innovation.
Pictures don't always do an item justice
The N1 is no looker when seeing it online--which i am reminded of everytime I download MIUI from their Rom page
But, in my hand, it looks and feels great-------
i always thought the N1 looked better in photos, in hand the frame is too big and the colour is not to my liking, the images show a more darker black/brown
IMO, the supposed design look hideous but i like the software though, colorful, eye catching definitely except for the damn home menu and back buttons. WHERE IS THE F*ING SEARCH BUTTON! >.< i know it's weird but i am one of a few people who uses it a alot. on my n1 the search buttons serves as quick autorotate on/off and search function as well. Another biggest thing, doesnt that phone in the photo looks 4:3 rather than 16:9 to you guys?
I no longer think Nexus is ugly. The new picture shows aluminium type of edge around the phone. The first leak of the pics prob preliminary. I likes the new pics by modoco.

In my opinion, MeeGo is the OS that just is the most fun to use. Albeit more limiting than Android.

But without any apps to multitask with.
That's why I don't see room for a new player at this stage of the game. Android, iOS and even WP8 to a lesser extent are just too established for a newcomer to compete.

Good point. Though I am not an app person myself. It did have a good Spotify app (homebrew, that could actually search your own offline lists), a working Whatsapp (also way more customizable than any other whatsapp app) etc. It has a fairly strong dedicated community supporting it.
I hope Sailfish can handle Android apps as they claim. There's a Android logo 0:50 into their official introduction movie. I don't thing it will ever get "big". But a nice alternative for phone nerds like me.
Hi,
i'm one of the interested ones.
There is not really a lack of Apps. If we belive what they say, a lot of Android apps should run native on Sailfish. On the other hand there is a good system to port them.
There are not only the Nexus without software keys. The new Motorolla don't have them too. They're also open for developers.

Problem is, Google will not license the play store to them.
So you think it will be to hard for ordinary users to install apps? Don't you think they will create an own store application wich uses the google account of the user to install apps?
Otherwise there is only left to port them.
Props to them for trying. I agree I don't see google letting them into the play store, because frankly it won't help their sales at all. If they deny them play store access, that new os will fade away and be forgotten. If they let it in, then it has potential to grow and be a competitor for google thus taking away from more android licenses being sold.
It will be neat to see, maybe spark ideas for the main 3 os companies to license from and improve. They should change the name so it doesnt sound like you are saying 'selfish' with a strong accent

It will probably function like sideloading apps, youll have to download them to local storage and manually install them. Easy for us, but my parents? Heck no. lol
Looks like Metro and Android had a baby.
Meego should have been alowed to evolve under Nokia.
I think the buttonless ui is defintely interesting.. i would love to see a port attempt and just try itout..
I know i wouldnt use it daily driver.. but as a technerd i would love to try it out

We're on XDA and that's what you are worried about?
Some of these features are looking really good! Hope to see it running on my phone very soon.
I can foresee this being ported to Nexus devices. Really looking forward to it.
good os but no devs
hi about the playstore u can hack it to the os and make it think it is running on android and using android phone not a real problem
u can install blackmart alpha or 1mobile market it looks like playstore
the real problem is there is no devs are working on this os!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why i think the android is boring sometimes and had to change it but when i look where to go the ios i hate it (don't ask why) cus i hate this apple but she has a cute phone only the 4s maybe some android ports make it good
tizen looks like bada
bada is app less (no apps)
webos who is care about it
firefox os its only for firefox browser in my mind

so the future os i think sailfish is
thanks.

[Disscusion] Firefox OS Epic win? or Epic fail? Your thoughts (keep it clean)

Hi guys just wanted to make a tread to find out what people think about Firefox OS so they can share there opinions views what they'd like to see or what they love etc at the moment there isn't that much to go on but based on how it's looking so far opinions will surely change as time goes on but whenever you're reading this what do u think
Well I think it's epic cause it's more open source than android cause it's based on the Web technology (html), and hope we could see this on new phones

I think it is an epic fail because of a bad UI that looks like a cheap ios theme

Am actually with u on this 1they haven't really got me enthused as Ubuntu did plus looking at it feels like Android and ios has a baby but only time will tell

Ubuntu is far better than Firefox OS.
I like the way Ubuntu Devs have used all Edges of screen. Firefox OS has nothing specific.
Jolla Sailfish has something like the pulldown for menu. That's Awesome.!!
I saw them demoing it on a low-end phone

I think its the wrong time to come into the game this late. Look at what happened to netbooks and chromeos. It kind of flopped and it was outdated in less than 6 months because of the tablet generation. There are so many great mobile operating systems (iOS, Android) that to come out with another wouldn't be successful. Google Chrome OS is great but it has a limited buyers market. And to me it just seems weird that a company mostly known by their browser is going to come out with an OS? How about you develop an OS for PC before entering the mobile generation?
That's my thought,
John
I cant wait to test it...I always like new things and I hope wont be awful I mean sluggish like android 1.6-2.1.
But I think people wont go for it(massive)

I have more believes in Tizen OS. But will be hard for anyone to compete and gain terrain against the well established IOS and Android. I don't think all 3 new OS's (Tizen, Firefox and Sailfish) will survive. But Tizen will do good, most because because they have the hardware of Samsung

In my opinion I can say Firefox is beginning in the development of software for the movils. So, I prefer give more time for devs... Maybe in the future will be a big phone OS.
i think it's not really good if you give it on an android based phone..
i mean where's the point of buying an android phone without android inside it..
HTML cant do much much stuff either...
I think that it's great that a 'proper' opensource alternative will exist. I just hope they manage to get enough traction. I agree the UI is unimaginative and looks too much like a bad IOS copy but that can develop as the OS matures. It all comes down to how well it's taking up by developers, how smooth the system runs and of course price. As a basic smartphone for non power users that only need to make calls, browse the web, message, etc it could be a good alternative, especially as it won't be secretly leaking all your private information back to Google, Apple or MS.
With ububtu phone coming too it's going to be exciting times to watch how these unfold.

i dont know why but im wondering about Firefox OS. something could change with it.
I think it's neither epic win nor epic fail. Firefox OS isn't designed to be #1, it's designed as an alternative and will do with even a small market share. That makes it neither a win nor a fail, it's the user experience that will ultimately decide. If you ask for opinions, make the thread title a question only, without providing any possible answers. We're here to express our opinion instead of picking a preset of opinions, which many seem to do.

No one has stopped anyone from forking Android and taking that in a direction that is free and open. In fact I'd argue that at this point, we'd be better off with an Android fork than a new OS. When you look at what they've removed from Android across the last two versions, you can only anticipate the disappointment that's surely to follow in the future.

TBF, pretty much every phone features a grid of icons. The single hard button worries me more.

couldnt be much agree
Personally I think its an epic win. It will never be the comparable to any OS like Android. However where it does excel is in its openness. Its probably one of the most free and open OS I've ever seen, and it uses Linux for its kernel. On another note if I had only one choice between Firefox OS and Ubuntu phone OS I'd pick Firefox.. but I haven't liked Ubuntu since Unity and the commercialization and exploitation of their Linux distro. My favorite feature of Firefox OS has got to be the ability to view source of an app just by holding the side button.
