My Vibrant's touchscreen gets screwy when connected to any of my laptop's USB ports, when the lappy is either on battery or wall power.
By screwy I mean it misreads my presses, as if I pressed elsewhere on the screen. I'm in the 30 day swap period still, but I was lucky enough to get a very bright screened model and am reluctant to swap it unless this power/screen problem is to be worried about.
Have not been able to test on another computer's USB ports yet.

Mine works fine OP when connected to both my laptop and my desktop.
Does your laptop happen to be a macbook? Because this phone has problems with apple computers.
No, a Dell. More specifically, this is not when mounting or using ADB. This occurs when merely connected and charging. Seems like it's a spurious signal coming down the USB line from the laptop is my guess.
I've had that unfortunate experience since day one of purchase. I went through three Vibrants.
I swapped the first one because of the touch screen bug with the USB connection. Also, the back button would periodically "stick" and continuously press back until I were to tap it again.
When I got the second one, I realized the issue with the USB remained the same and the "sticky" back button was more frequent than the first one.
The third one that I have now has a more responsive touch screen with the USB connected. It would act up 50% less than the first two. It has moments when it works just fine when I move the cable around and make sure I'm not touching the cable there on after.
My coworker doesn't experience that problem when he tries it on the work computers and my phone doesn't have that problem either. It only acts that way when I plug it into my x64 Sony VAIO, so I'm wondering if it's some sort of related issue.
Don't feel bad. I've been searching online for some sort of remedy since its release and have found nothing.

I've always used the cable it came with. From reading your post, I just tried a USB with a micro USB converter tip, but it still produces the same symptoms.
I had the same problem. went to T-Mobile store (thinking I needed to get a new phone) and after a couple of tests, they gave me a new charger... that solved the issue 100%, so in my case, this was the cable/wall charger, not the phone

try changing the charger/USB at the store for an original one (not generic micro USB) that took care of me

I swapped al of the contents every time I made the exchange. When it's plugged into an outlet with the charger/USB it comes with, it works just fine. Works fine with any x86 computers at my job. It goes crazy on my x64 desktop and laptop. It's pretty annoying when I'm working on it with Eclipse and I get text messages. It becomes a task just to swype in one word, or disconnect it as an alternative and wait for about five seconds for it to function properly again.
well that sucks. I have x86 at work and 64 bit at home. after swaping the charger/cable, like I said, no more problems anywhere

I'm using x64 Win7, so that could be it. Also, am using the stock cable, I have no other micro cables at this time. More in the mail already. I'll check on my bro's 32 bit Win7 laptop and with the aftermarket cables.

laptop issues
I have a HP laptop and if my vibrant is connected via stock usb cord my laptop will not boot. It doesn't get past the first HP screen and it shuts off abruptly and tries to reboot. When unplugged everything is fine as long as it is up and running. I can connect my phone and do whatever needs to be done as long as my laptop has booted up. I thought it was kinda weird. I only plug my vibrant in my laptop while tethering to charge. Anyone experience this? btw running win7 64

Happens on my HP aswell but with a Droid incredible connected, must be a HP issue

It is because the laptop is trying to boot from one of the removable devices that show up whenever the phone is connected.

Sounds like a CPU preemptive latency problem. The USB port may use big time slices of the CPU during the same time the touchscreen positions are being calculated. This should be fixed with the new update.

Mine did the same thing, except it did not matter what power source. When it was plugged into anything, my screen was screwy. Unplug it, and everything worked again. I exchanged mine, and have not had the problem since.
Mine is that way as well, but not with the computer, its that way with one charger that I previously had with my aria. After I unplug, its fine. I read somewhere that the length of the cord might have something to do with it.

I used to have this problem with just one miniusb charger for my G1. The problem is there's too much current. You probably have a USB port that puts out more power on AC and it's simply too much for your phone. If it's getting REALLY hot, that's a sure sign.
I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this, but I've discovered when my Nexus 4 is plugged into my laptop (a Macbook Pro), the touchscreen kind of acts a little wonky. Occasionally it won't completely pickup my drag (like when I'm unlocking the phone) or swiping between homescreens. Has anyone else had this problem? When the phone isn't plugged into a computer it runs just fine.
just tried it. My phone is running smooth, even when i plug it in to my computer. are you running custom Rom?
Its stock ROM and kernel. I'm running 4.2.2 but I believe it was also an issue in 4.1.2. I'm just trying to figure out if this is something I should RMA over.
Have you tried to use a different cable? I have experience the same problem and was able to fox it using a different cable or a different USB port.

That's probably what it is. My old Motorola droid cable used to do this to touchscreens.

Note: As per my observations, the touch threshold changes when charger is detected. This affects the touch sensitivity.

My girlfriend bought a cheap charger from eBay and it caused her screen to go haywire. It started pressing random things. I plugged it in my Samsung Galaxy i9000 and the touchscreen simply froze, you couldn't actually press anything.
You'd be surprised how dirty current can damage/affect the running of an electronic device. New cable and/or different port me thinks

Hey, TrevSo, I have just noticed exactly the same issue with my Nexus 4. I connect it to one of my laptops and the screen goes all wonky ... poor sensitivity, phantom taps ... very strange.
I have tried several different cables and tried it on two different computers and three different chargers.
any cable with any one of my chargers (included one, some Kodak charge and an HTC charger) - OK
any cable with ThinkPad W520 - OK
any cable with Thinkpad T60 (any of the three USB ports) - BAD
Maybe a grounding or insufficient power issue?
EDIT: definitely a power and/or grounding issue: my T60 came with a cheapo aftermarket power adapter. When the power adapter is plugged in, the phone's screen freaks out. Unplug the laptop to run it on battery power and, voila, phone screen is fine. I looked it up and the official Lenovo adapter is grounded.
I have experienced the same thing using the stock cable from my Galaxy Nexus connected to my ThinkPad X60 laptop. Swipe gesture typing will cut off my swipes mid-word and the double finger swipe gesture to bring down the quick settings menu will lead to unintentional taps of things on the screen.
Same thing happens when phone is connected to an Asus netbook using the stock Nexus 7 cable.
4.2.2 didn't fix the problem.
Hey everyone, thanks for all of the feedback/ideas. As others have surmised, it appears to be a charger/cord problem. I ran a couple tests and it really seems like when it's hooked to my laptop (while plugged in) using a non-OEM wire the touchscreen acts really strangely. When hooked to my desktop, things seem to work just fine. I'm no expert in these things so I can't really make a conclusion based on those facts, but I hope this information helps other people.
Yeah, like I said, definitely a power source issue. I guess some laptops don't deliver quite the correct voltage to the USB ports or something.

it never had problems about the battery but tonight, when i tried to recharge the phone it doesn't start. there isn't also the initially battery icon.
i've already tried different cable and the problem doesn't go away..

Well I had with my old phone the same problem but I recognized that there was some dirt in the charging port of the phone.
I removed this with my nail and it worked again.
Probably it won't help you but you'll never know
Try connecting the charge cable to a USB port on your computer for a few hours. You may not see anything right away but eventually the phone will begin to charge.
i got this issue few days back..the charging was slow..cant even reach 100 when im on the phone..its pathetic..swap with my old lg phone model cable bam!the old cable built was much rugged compared to nexus 4..
I have exactly the same problem - when it ran out of power today, it switched itself off normally, and then when I inserted the cable, it didn't charge. not even the battery animation thing came up!
I hope somebody can find a solution.
Oh yeah, and I checked in the port for dust, and used countless alternate wires and power adapters

When you run the battery all the way down it takes a while to start a charge. Just leave it plugged in for a while and it'll go. I'm not sure if it does this every time because I don't drain my phone to 0% but it has happened before on my old phone and I've seen it happen to iphones as well.

Did you ever find a solution or send the phone in to LG? I'm having this exact problem right now. I've tried three different micro USB wall chargers for hours at a time as well as charging it through the USB port on my computer. I get absolutely no charge and I have never had any problems at all until last night when it simply would not charge.

Try pressing the power button and immediately the low volume, wait like 3 to 5 seconds and it'll restarts. Not the first time this happens to me and wish to know what's going on! don't know if there's an app that's doing this or hardware issue...
Try cleaning the port like mentioned. There's videos in YouTube

ahh this problem...i had the exact same problem with my gnex...its just that the metal plate of the micro usb port of your phone has bent down a bit which is why it doesnt charge...the easiest way to fix that is to take something flat and lift the metal plate gently..not too much otherwise you'll break it...just lift it up slightly and it should charge normally then...Hopefully :fingers-crossed:

So firstly, I've tried using the wall-mounted AC charger. I then tried using USB on my computer, in 3 different usb ports. The phone was charging perfectly less than 24 hours before this problem began.
I plugged it in as per usual, and it didn't show the little lightning bolt on the batter icon like it should. It wasn't registering that it was plugged in. I tried plugging it into my PC, and it wasn't showing that it was connected via USB. In addition to that, my computer was failing to install the drivers for it. I went back to the AC charger, and tried a few different outlets, including one on a power strip. Nothing worked.
I searched online, and found that other people had this problem, and could only fix it by resetting to factory default settings. One person even had to do it twice to get it to work. So I did this, and it still didn't work. I tried charging my old phone with this Ac charger and cable, and it wouldn't work either. So I thought it must be a fault in the cable. So I dug up the cable (also micro-usb) for my old phone, and tried it. It worked just fine for my old phone, but my S4 still had the same problem, but with something new. It would say "Dock connected" but still not charge.
As of right now, it seems to be charging properly with my new AC mount and old usb cable, but I'm worried that this could happen again. Considering this seems to be a problem for other people too, what should I do about it? Is there some way to prevent this sort of thing from happening? Was it purely the other cable, given the fact that it didn't work with my old phone either? I'm on an extremely tight budget, and this phone is my only way of being contacted for job interviews, so having it in working order is very important. Any advice would be very appreciated!

Yup having the same issues - but i noticed only having charging issues when battery reaches 20% or the low battery notification pops up
it detects that a usb is connected but it wont charge
Solutions:
- dont let it go below 20 which is ****
- some people claim that if you use a 5pin charger instead of the 4pin which samsung includes solves the prob
Mine is a little more serious I think... haven't found a solution like that yet.
I have to connect/disconnect multiple times and it suddenly works.
But between those connects/disconnects it presents multiple problems, it appears on notification bar "Dock Connected", sometimes appears "Dock Connected" and on the notification bar appears "Suggested Apps (Anchoring)", other times it appears "Dock Connected" and the volume bar appears on the screen and stay there freeze (the phone works, but the bar doesn't disappear)... Sometimes the phone starts charging and suddenly stops, other times it says it's charging and if I remove the charger it keeps the charging symbol on the battery icon...
It's completely crazy, gonna take to service I guess.
Have you tried blowing out the usb connector on the phone with a can of compressed air?
If there is a minute piece of dust there it may be shorting something out - error that dock is connected. I know this happens to other phones, there was a big thread about it on the S3 forum. Might be a simple little thing like that...
Unfortunately that doesn't work for me, will send to service, let's see.

Yep, chalk up one more with the same problem!
At first I thought it had something to do with Aviate, a custom launcher from Yahoo (actually a pretty sweet one at that!)
But I guess not.
My work-around is to reboot the phone while connected. It charges fine while turned off and seems to keep charging when booting while plugged in.
Still... this is a stupid work-around and I want this fixed properly.
Any news from any of you guys?

Had this problem today. Suddenly out of nowhere "Dock is connected" message appeared after plugging the charger in and out. Tried to clean out the dock with stick and cotton on the edge. Then turned off and plugged in charger. Problem exists. Phone charges but stops regularly. It is very annoying when you dont know how to fix this kind of problem.
Any new solutions?
Right after this post, I froze the app "battery doctor 4.9.2" using Titanium Backup Pro (you can just uninstall it i guess). Then just plugged charger and now it's already Almost 90% without any interruption.

Amazing! I've dealing with this problem for weeks and internet didn't give me any good answer, but the whole problem was a baterry monitor apk that for some reason was interfiering with the charger. Thank you so much!
I had this problem too and in my case it was a hardware problem. When i start the charging it kept repeating the start proces of charging with the vibration and the grey battery icon(in case the phone was turned off). The battery icon with the green charging light just didn't showed up. I tried many things but nothing helped. I let the phone keep charging for the whole night but in the morning i saw that it didn't charged anyway!
Then i went to a local phone reparation shop(none official samsung) and they knew immediately recognized the problem and it was the usb/charging connector where you plug it in the phone. They fixed it in 1 hour for a cheap price and from then(i think a few months ago) it charges back perfectly. It seems it's a disease with S4's.
In my previous post I was happy thinking that all this charging problems were solved after uninstalling battery apk. But, in fact, my S4 charges very slowly after that incident. I have tried two other samsung adapters (galaxy s4 mini; grand prime). First one results the same (up to 5 hours charging), the latter was comparably shorter (up to 3 hours), but still slower than it used to be (2 hours normally). So I highly suspected the hardware might be the reason. Thank you for your information, now I will also have the phone checked at some local repair shop. And give feedback of course.

You probably got some water damage in your port. What you need to do is clean it. I used pure alcohol and a toothbrush for that. After that I flashed a custom kernel so I could enable fast charge true usb.
That's the reason your phone is charging slowly, it thinks it's connected true usb. So you need to boost the usb charging. After a few charge cycles I could revert back to my standard kernel and the problem was fixed.

Mine S4 got wet last weekend and now i am also getting the " Dock is connected" message when i plug in the charger cable.
I can charge my phone but sometimes while charging i hear the sound go off and on what you hear when unplugging the charger.

I suggest you go buy a new genuine cable for an s4, the s4 does actually require a special cable capable of 2A charge rate otherwise you can end up in all sorts of bother.

Same problem - galaxy s6
Hi there - same problem, on my 128gb s6. started this morning. Yesterday everything fine, would charge when connected via USB to both laptop and to regular samsung usb power unit. Have now tried 3 different USB cables including the samsung cable, 3 different usb power units and of course tried all 3 cables in laptop usb port. Have checked phone's usb port - clean as a whistle. Have rebooted both connected and unconnected. Started getting 'dock connected' message, now it just wont charge, although starts up fine. I take very good care of the phone, so no water damage or untoward shock damage (never get it wet, never drop it). Remaining battery charge seems to fluctuate between 30% and 40+ %, depending upon whether it's plugged in or not. If I turn it off, then connect usb cable, the phone just reboots, still not charging. I then turn it off and see no green battery charging screen, as I used to seen when connected but turned off. Should I just hard reset and take to repair shop? Still under warranty.
I would return the phone for a warranty repair. Software would not usually prevent the phone from charging when powered off.
As a final test, see if the s6 will charge wirelessly, assuming you have access to a qi charging pad and the s6 has a built-in qi receiver like the North American version of the s6.

I've had this problem for a few weeks now and have yet to find a solution.
I'm quite astonished I haven't found a fix for this either. I have yet to open mine up ... I'm try to get the bootloader relocked, so I can warranty the dumb thing. But since it's not recognized by USB when powered on, I can't.
Have you tried putting pressure on the cable when it's plugged in? Also are you using the factory cable?

Yep ... Tried pushing. Pulling. Etc. Factory cable. Non factory. Doesn't seem to matter. Anything I use charges fine off. Once on ... No juice

Unfortunately it is a hardware failure. Most likely the USB port assembly. It is possible there is a loose ribbon cable connection.
Nexus 7 not charging
I have the same problem. My Nexus 7 will not charge when turned on. It will not now connect to my pc. I have checked the drivers and all are ok.
It happened a few days ago Its rooted. I can restore backups that are on my Nexus through rom manager, but still the same problem. I thought of doing a factory reset, but if it will still not connect to my pc. I will loose the data. If it is a hardware usb port failure, what is the next stop
I know this is going to sound strange but open up the back of the Nexus and you will find your battery... And you will notice that it's loose you have to plug or wedge it back on to the battery clip it comes loose overtime use a credit card or similar to open the case :thumbup: success

Thanks for reply, already checked battery and connections. It charges perfect when not switched on, that's what I find strange. It also charges when connected to my pc

Has anybody else had the same problem, if so, how did you overcome it.
Similar thing happened to me... No amount of pressure or angling of the charging port would work. Batteries ran dead as a result. Sent it to the service center and they would assess it for 2-3 days and try to repair since it is under warranty. I'm gonna get an official dock to try and save the charging port from the stress of always being in use although I know that's not the only factor at play.

That's sounds a good idea with the official dock for charging, but you should not have to do that.
To much usage of the micro usb port is going to give problems. I'm always connected to my pc, downloading roms ect. but as I said before, my N7 charges perfectly when not turned on.

I think the only answer is a faulty USB connection.
I tried to change mine and finished up snapping the connectors. :crying:
Now have one useless N7
Long story short: plugged the n7 into the car's OEM stereo USB port on a long trip and it registered as a device with the stereo and let me play some music off of it, when I woke up a couple hours later it wouldn't charge.
After a short bit of troubleshooting, I found that OTG devices were still working but it would only charge if I shut it right down - if I start it charging while it's turned off and leave the charger attached while powering it up it's not detected by the software so it never says it's charging, but does still charge - though if at any point I pull the charger from either the n7 or it's supply I have to shut it right down again to get it to charge. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of a PC USB device connection (aside from the charging part of course.)
After a couple weeks using it like this, I got my hands on a multimeter (my stuff is all packed in storage indefinitely or I'd have been replying to this topic sooner) and confirmed that I never register anything beyond a few millivolts on the detect/sense pin (which I find very odd as it's supposed to have a pull-up) with nothing attached to the usb port, and that aside from a short time in fasboot that unless the n7 is powered right off it's trying to supply 5V to the USB connector. I attempted to use the faux123 kernel that has options to disable this power to allow host+charging (and my hope was to slow the battery rundown to make it more usable even if I have to shut it off to charge it), but the n7 appears to ignore this and still powers the USB connector.
In this case it most definitely is NOT the IO/USB/headphone assembly inside the unit. At the moment I'm operating on the theory that Asus skimped on protection circuitry in the charge circuit as in my mind this type of damage should never occur when it's properly designed, and I'm presuming the motherboard dead with regards to being a USB device - too bad my warranty is likely up, though I can't check that as it was a gift and all the paperwork is buried in storage. Thankfully it's still capable of fast charging when off, though this doesn't leave me very happy as this also effectively takes away most recovery options if fastboot is the only thing left working.
If I manage to source a replacement mobo I will work on doing a post-mortem and seeing if it's down to a faulty component (I've seen this sort of behaviour before, a pulled up line not getting pulled up, when a filtering capacitor decides to go flakey.) More likely though I'll either sell it, give it away or put it on the junk pile with the rest of the Asus products I've had to retire in the last month due to their questionable customer support (the other products were due to Asus deciding they were "legacy products" and not updating drivers for windows 8/8.1 despite only being 5 years old.)

I am sure you are right, but I'm not qualified to agree or disagree.
I have had quite a few Asus products in the past and never had any problems.
My Nexus 7 (2012) was also charging properly. I only have the issue that it only charge when turned off AFTER I charged it:
(1) using car charger; and
(2) charge it using official charger but inside a train using train's power plug
So it seems that these devices really need a normal wall-charging paired with official charger.. otherwise, something bad might happen..
Has anyone tried to use Wireless Charger? does it work?
