hi guys, so im wondering, ive had this phone for a week now and battery life is not that good, and by that, if i leave it idling all day, say for 14 hours shes sitting at 30% battery life... thats only IDLE as in not screen on, just sitting in my pocket waiting for a call, with power save on, (which on or off its still just as bad on life) so i tried a bunch of stuff to see if that would help but nope?
now my other phone the GALAXY S w from bell or the actual name samsung Exhibit II, i put CM9 or ics on it, since its a gingerbread phone originally and even with some light moderate use i could go about 2 days max with out charging.... and when ever il eft it just idle in my pocket it could go im sure for about 6 days
so that being said, when i check my battery, it says ANDROID OS and ANDROID system is using most the battery life, while my screens at like 8%..... so im thinking why is it? the phones basically just dormant.. or should be
my EXHIBIT 2..... if i did the same it would say that the phone idle has taken up most the battery life and android os/system was very little, also in the same time frame of 1 day of idle/dormant my exhibit 2 would be sitting at about 85-90% battery life....
so taht being said.... anybody know why? the only differences i can think of between this phone the s3 and the exhibit is the fact this is a dual core and has a bigger screen, but when its idle and screen off it should idle down and screen size shouldnt consume all the power...
so to that end lol WOULD CM10 help alot? im starting to think its just the STOCK ROM thats stupid and sucks.... Thanks
I use on my GT I9300 SIII cyanogen 10 nightly and everything much more smoother than JB official and battery life prolonged....

+1, those stats are not normal for idle time (unless a lot of syncing etc is going on). Generally CM has slightly worse battery life over stock IMO...

Deep sleep is just your phone being in the idle state, mate, that's not going to be the cause. Take some screen shots of the 'partial wake locks' section of better battery stats and post them.

you think thats whats taking up my battery, even though its claiming something like "deep sleep"?
i know when i click on android os in reg battery details, it says "stay awake" has been 3 hours, now i know my screen certainly has not been on for that long
the sound does trigger the audio out wakelock there was a thread somewhere... saying disable click sounds and lockscreen sounds to prevent it. any ideas about that??
edit deep sleep is good not a wakelock post some screens man

deep sleep is completely normal... However something is keeping your phone awake too often - comparing the awake time to screen on time. So we needa see the wake locks to determine why.

Ditto, there is a guy in my office, constant ***** fest about the battery life.
I can third this. Some people I know have this dhd on steroids and they like the phone but say its on par with the dhd. Not better by any means. Which is a good thing too. But still I can get through one day on my sgs2. That's all that matters. Would I like better battery life? Yeah. So far its OK. the sensation on the other hand is worse.

I think that unit that they tested was faulty. In 7-8 hours, my battery lost 7% whilst syncing (all via push) gmail, Microsoft exchange, facebook app and hub, and hotmail. I had one SMS message, 4 fb notifications, 5 gmail emails and 2 exchange emails. Hardly poor for idling. When I've been using my internet, the battery has been really quite good.
And I highly doubt the Sensation is better. On A SIMPLE LEVEL - qHD = more pixels, and so the battery is using more power, to power the pixels, and it has a smaller capacity, and on Super AMOLED Plus, black pixels need no, or very little battery because the pixels aren't illuminated (or something like that).

I'll believe the DHD, but there is no way the SGS II has better battery life than an iPhone 4.
My SGSII has great battery life for an android phone, but it isn't even close the iphone 4 i had.

The iphone 4 has a good battery life. But not with all handsets. 3 of 7 people i know say their iphone battery is rubbish. My desire could out last two of those three people. Its not as simple as you may think.

Allot of iphone users probably don't know they can turn power draining features off, and they are much more likely to have the brightness set high.
I bought an iphone 4 to play with for a few weeks, the battery life is absolutely amazing compared to android.

I dont think thats right dude, I remember him championing the battery life. He said it was great and 50% better than Galaxy S.
I think think half of these "my battery sucks" threads are user error or dodgy apps.
When I first got my phone I installed everything under the sun and my battery didnt make it to the end of the working day. After a hard reset and a careful reinstall, I can get 2 days on the same useage.

I'm not sure about other devices but, me and my friend who both have a galaxy sii agree that the minimum brightness is still way too bright for night but actually very adequate for shade use. But if your trying to view minimum brightness in daylight, then I suggest you just switch to manual brightness and use the notification bar as a brightness bar. seriously I'd rather turn it up to read whatever at that moment out find a shady area, seeing it in sunlight at minimum is way to hard. not worth the 30 seconds of battery life you'll probably save
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
From looking at the battery graph on the review, that has to be either a faulty device or possibly a brand new device which hasn't had even a single charge cycle. I'm not going to say this phone has the best battery life ever (name me a phone on XDA without a battery life complaint thread or a battery boosting kernel), but it is much better than my N1 and DHD, although it did take a few cycles to reach this level.
So to me, the SGS II is CNET Australia's phone of the year!
Bonza!
Regards.
Honestly all these battery threads and battery bashing reviews make me want to vomit *PUKE*...
seriously I'm having the best battery life with my sgs2 then I had with any other phone before and yes I did own an Iphone *shoot myself in head*, Desire HD, Wildfire, Dell Streak...
I doubt its faulty hardware and I'm sure that android OS bug is due to another reason (fixable, as lot of people dont have it) and I might get flamed for saying this but I bet everybody that has sh!t battery life is retarded and doesnt know how to setup his phone properly.
If you get sh!t battery life = blame yourself!

what do you mean by careful reinstall?
Anything you can share with us about your way of installing carefully?
Edit: I am actually very happy with the battery life that I get out of mine. I wouldn't even say I heavy use of the phone, I'd say constant use which is like only sometimes putting the phone down to walk to another building at uni or talking to a friend who is walking with me. Or of course im occupied with something else
Its a curse, I can't get enough if always playing games with it, or reading xda or looking through market or when I'm thinking about what else to do on the phone, I play with my smooth launcher pro home screens and 3D app drawer. So basically here is my battery graph
Basically you can see with that much awake time i got roughly 7-8 hours on a single charge, also im not sure what that giant dip in battery llife is any ideas cant remember what i was doing. But even with that im happy

i'm not trying to start trouble, but i would like you to prove that and do tests to support your claim. i would like you to set up your SGS2 however you want, airplane mode, factory reset, remove every single app from the phone, dont log in to any google accounts, whatever you need, and then make it last as long as an iphone 4. do both phones screen on time, web browsing over wifi, or watching a movie. cause i just dont believe the SGS2 can ever outlast an iphone 4 even under the best conditions possible.

13 hours of screen time?
Could you specified more before after difference of your battery life and usage? I really like to try these steps, thx.
Single biggest improvement in battery life is turning my mobile data off when I won't be using my phone, such as when I'm at work. I used to finish work at lunchtime with 50% battery left, now it's more like 70-80%.
Maybe I'm missing something with Android, but I can't see why there isn't a setting in mobile data to only have it activated when screen is on, just like wifi. This is essentially what juice defender does (I know it has plenty more options), but it should be built in already, imho.

Agree. But, I do feel that it defeat the purpose of having data plan. Lol. Pay a fair amount of money every month on data package but since than just 1gb of data was used every month. That's 4gb unused data waste.

Lol can't have your cake and eat it too lol ... I guess I'm more talking about idle time .. You for instance may find just by enabling Data Roaming your phone may deep sleep more and still saving you battery. ... I have read so many forums post's ect what I have tried to do here is let sgs3 owners know what works for me. Just by using one of the tips on the first post may save you battery. .. Good luck n happy holidays

Well actually the best setting is to keep data on always otherwise it will defeat the purpose of having a smartphone.
But keep wifi off when screen is off.
If you turn off wifi and data when screen off then why do you even need to keep data on in the first place. Because when you turn on your screen wifi will be on and available and so don't need data.

I tried the ultimate or pro version. It was good for a while but then I rooted and flashed a few roms.
I then uninstalled it and tried to compare the difference and I concluded it wasn't saving much battery.
To each his own.

I agree the mobile data eats battery.
Try go into setting > more settings > mobile networks > network mode - try using only GSM when you dont need fast internet (for me this allows EDGE data connectivity) instead of auto because I think the phone will automatically try find 3G connectivity. When you need faster internet (for youtube) then you go to auto mode or WCDMA only.
This itself has proven to save a bit of battery.
So here it goes... people are always asking about how Live Wallpapers influence the battery consumption of the phone... in this case i tested on a Galaxy s3 i9300.
For this test i kept the screen on until the battery gone down to 30%.
This is how i made the test.
I used the Live Wallpaper Magic Bubbles, you can find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apofiss.magicbubbles&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hcG9maXNzLm1hZ2ljYnViYmxlcyJd
I think this LWP is good coded so there's no problem about that influencing the consumption of the battery.
I kept the brightness on full too. (100%)
To keep the screen on during all the process i also used the app, Screen On Toggler: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.malcolm.screenontoggler&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tYWxjb2xtLnNjcmVlbm9udG9nZ2xlciJd
To keep the results fair as possible when doing the test Without the live wallpaper, i took a screenshot of it and then crop it and applied it as wallpaper so i could have the same colors coming out of the screen.
So this is all the details i think... the rom used was foxhound 1.7, although i think it doesn't matter.
This was the result then.

So as you can see its a big difference and yes the LWP has a big hit on the battery consumption... although of course you will not keep the screen always on.. this was just a test so i hope its helpful to you. Next time i will had a test but with a black background... or a darker background... to see the difference between a colorful BG and a darker BG.
Please post your opinions and thoughts...
you must have bad screen burn in by now
a very useful test for our information, thanks very much.
Two posts on the same subject is a waste .

thanks for the test..
i used to have a nice battery life when using jellybean wallpaper from google play
most of the time, the cpu stayed at 200mhz but since a few update, it hog cpu at 600mhz.. thr is where i left live wallpaper and never went back
Just my observation.
A well coded LWP will only consume battery when the home screen is showing, and to that end I don't think, unless you spend endless hours staring at your home screen, that the consumption is really fairly indicated by this test, although it's a useful bit of testing. Thanks

Yeah.. i thought that was a bit stupid... if you have a phone that cant stay on for more than 5 hours oO, although i did search about that matter and found that the people who got it have the phone turned on day and night.. lol. probably like in the stores...
nice test
Thanks for this :good:
I'm afraid the results of this test are not indicative of real-life experience. A well coded live wallpaper app does not consume CPU power unless it's visible (homescreen, lockscreen and app drawer). I wonder how much actual time an average user spends on those 3 elements. A more accurate measurement would be if you left your screen on any other app (wallpaper not visible) and then check the difference in battery life. Or leave the phone overnight on flight mode, screen off (no risk of burn-in) and then see if live wallpaper indeed increases the battery consumption by 200+%, which is what you claim... I am fairly certain that this is not the case at all.
That said, thank you for your efforts and for sharing your findings with us.

Wow.
I'm just impressed by your screen-on time. It's amazing how you weren't plagued by Media, Mediaserver, Android System, and/or Android OS battery drain issues. Those processes are really eating away at my battery. I'm thoroughly annoyed.
Very well tweaked phone.
You could use cpu sleeper to turn off 3 cores of the processor when the screen goes off.
I use also lot of battery tweaks of the app pimp my rom
You have to turn off google search, location, auto save, and a lot of settings in all the apks...
You can use also ds eco batterie to have less wakelock
Battery reborn to turn on airplane mod the night
And finaly, turn off animations, have a black wallpaper...
After that the battery is like an iphone 4, joke

You could even hold the power button until a menu pops up, hit power off, then hit yes this mod which is standard in all ROMs will give you days of battery life.

well i dont use pimp my rom at all, coz i think that app is like a nuclear bomb lol and i dont want to get near it even with a Hazmat suit. That said. the only things i use to keep my battery up is the black wallpaper and disable the autosync settings in the apps i don't really care. I have a lot of "news" apps and i don't need them to notify me every time so i disable them all... actually the only one i keep turned on is the facebook notifications. I dont like to go extreme on the battery part because i dont want to compromise the functions on my phone, hey we paid a lot for this, if i wanted a more battery phone i wouldn't have bought sIII right? So try to have the max battery you can without really disabling a lot of the functions you paid for... Its a phone... the battery is supposed to go down xD and you are supposed to charge it i have a maximum of 2 days... not more... and sometimes 1 day... and im very happy with it.

Hello,
My S4 is nearly a week old now, it's the international GT-I9500 octa-core version. Since it dons a big battery of 2,600 mAH (middle point of S3 and Note 2) it was suppose to last long more even with heavy usage.
My usage is moderate, a few calls, but I use connectivity extensively i.e. WiFi indoors and Mobile Data outdoors.
I tried switching off the WiFi to preserve battery and to see any boost but zilch.
Whenever I put the phone on charge, it charges very quickly and when the charging is complete and I remove the phone from the charger, it discharges pretty quickly, goes to 99% in a minute WITHOUT any usage.
What could be the issue? I even formatted my memory card from S4 as I read some bad mp3 files or something can cause the battery drain and such.
Everything is stock, both ROM and Kernel and the phone is not rooted atm
I'm attaching the screenshots for my cycle with minimal WiFi and Data usage.

It's better than the s3 because the battery is larger but I'm telling you that screen is a hog. It's larger and brighter and its 1080p; yes the resolution causes the gpu to eat more battery too.

im wondering if there's a way to switch the screen to 720 mode instead of 1080p to save battery life. similar to switching a computer monitor so you stress the gpu less during a game... this would also save a small percentage of battery life...
also a more efficient auto-brightness would be great.

Same here, hate watching the battery drop so soon. For me, what I've observed is that WiFi eats a lot of battery than mobile DATA for this set when it should be the other way around...
I have my internet disconnected at home due to some upgrading of the lines in my area so I haven't been using WiFi at home, only at office, so mobile DATA was switched on all day yesterday at home and when I go outside and surprisingly the battery didn't drain a lot.
I'll post screenshots of this cycle as soon as the battery drains down to 2%

With big screen and higher resolution, it will definitely consume more power. try to turn off screen and kill running apps when not needed.
16hours on battery is quite good considering the WIFI indoor and Data on.
i probably get a little bit more than that but less wifi usage and data is only EDGE in my country.

Nothing alarming
Firstly, your stats are perfectly normal. I got the same results on my stock octa core version.
Try omega its much better battery consumption wise. Other tips: Switch to 2g only if you are using your phone just for chatting, keep backups off and turn unnecessary sync off. Turn off your screen tap sounds.
You might already know all this.
Anyhow, trust me 16hours at 60% is not bad. Hopefully samsung will do something about it with future updates.
CHEERS.
Ow and if you are over with your honeymoon with all the air motion gestures smart eye tracking features, turn them off if you want to save some more.

I just updated my HTC One yesterday and the battery drain is ridiculous. I took my phone off the charger at 6am today and watched some of a film listened to a bit of music and sent texts as usual and phone went dead at 2pm !
Usually it would last till 6pm with heavy usage but since the update the battery life has deteriorated.
My phone is less than a week old and overall really impressed with it till now.

For me the 4.2.2 update has improved my battery life.
Everything completely stock, get about 35-40 hours battery life (100% to ~1%) with 2 to 4 hours on screen time. Obviously depending on what you do with that screen on, will dictate just how much battery life you use. But for me, usually browsing, reading, watching YouTube. Dont really game or do anything massively intensive.
Also everything on stock normal, (locations, gps, auto sync, blinkfeed, etc).
As I said depending on what you do with your phone, your battery life with on screen time will increase/decrease. Also whether you use it as a smartphone (all sync etc on) or reduce it to a phone (2g, power saver, screen dimmed, etc) makes a huge difference.

My phone is less than a week old and overall really impressed with it till now.
Anyone else having this issue and can suggest a fix?

Dude, might as well switch it off...
Battery drain is definitely higher after the update. Frankly not a great update at all...

I'm working in dark rooms so why keeping display brightness not at minimum? And on most places I only got 2G network, so why not forcing the phone to only use this?
And sync... Yeah... I don't need the weather to be updated every hour... Or news... They're appearing on my BlinkFeed anyways...
And I'm using my phone as a smartphone as well Over 6 hours screen on time is mostly Facebook, WhatsApp and browsing.

I though we moved on from doing all this crap.
Why can't android manage battery like windows does or even better htc work with Google and sort the issue.
All I know is before this update I had ok battery life now I have extremely poor life. I would suggest it's the update.

100% agree with you..now the phone charges quicker but it discharges quicker too.. yes i did hard reset, autosync etc etc.. no change of my usage patterns, i now get half the usage..
dont know why htc just didnt go straight to 4.3 as this significantly improves battery life..4.2 acrosss the board was a bad update.
Anyone tried the Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru app?

Had the same issue after official ota. Tried a hard reset but didn't work. Then I unlocked bootliader and switched to maximus 10 Rom and I'm back in the game!

try this made a difference (for me at least)
Wifi settings
keep wifi on during sleep - Never
Also downloaded lux to change brightness...
both have made a significant difference.
