Hey guys, I have been reading through this site, http://developer.android.com/training/index.html and I plan to go through the classes and build my first app. I was wondering what the more experienced folks here think of the site.
Thanks for the heads up . Didn't really take a good look yet. But it seems interesting.
At a glance it seems like a good idea. Even if its not the greatest tool, it should be a great starting point. Might hafta look into that some more ...
I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to use Eclipse with out profanity!:banghead:

Well I meant to say that jokingly but (%)/*8#*%!!! Ahh. I feel better now. I was going through the video AdamOutler has on youtube for making your first app and I think I screwed up in the initial download and set up of sdk so I'm starting over. :screwy:

AdamOutler is using Linux in his how to make your first app youtube videos. I'm using Vista on my old HP laptop. I know I really need to upgrade but what is the advantage of Linux over Windows?

Without going into a lot of details, the info I've gotten points to Linux making things a lot easier when doing Dev work.

It depends on what the dev work is specifically, what your target platform is and the specific tools available for each platform.
As far as android application development, the tools are cross-platform and from my 'minimal' experience I have yet to come across any development quirks that would point me towards using one platform over another.
Use what you are comfortable with most.

The only reason I still keep a windows parition on my laptop is the occasional need to do some gaming. Lol

well I've been trying to follow this http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/26/ho...om-for-android-part-1-setting-up-the-kitchen/ to learn to use DsiXDA's kitchen and I'm having trouble figuring out how to download to install the java files ubuntu requires. ubuntu seems prety cool but I'm kind of stuck until I get this going. It seems like the more I read the less I know... It's quite a bit discouraging.
Its a learning process for sure. Just have to forget windows and read alot.

silverlight is a microsoft product, if microsoft doesnt choose to make a version for android then you are out of luck. what i would suggest is to vnc into a desktop and then watch the jerky unwatchable video through that =)
Funny, I'm still waiting for silverlight with full drm support for linux. Android was based off of linux. So all I can tell you is keep waiting for microsoft to port it over. BTW, no dev I know is going to touch a microsoft branded software.

Ok man, if I were you I would play around with a linux box to get to know linux commands, then I would play with modding the kernel on that linux computer. I recommend this so you don't build a rom with a how to and. Then put it on your phone and end up with a brick.

Now before you ask "why do you need a new hard drive?" Well that is because somehow I lost it, dont ask me how ha.

yeah i think the hd2, hd7 and the evo are pretty similar.
Legally... porting w7 to the hd2 is just as wrong as porting it to the evo....
all those people that say i has a license, so what? its like saying i have a license to run windows vista... so i can install a hacked version of windows 7 legally.
If they are allowed to post those roms here, we can too. The only thing is finding devs to do it.

I really wish a port would come to fruition. However, no dev even seems remotely interested.
Also, windows phone 7 has been out for quite a while now on GSM carriers, but there has been no port to a GSM android device. I fear there might be more issues than just developer interest.

I just read that the HTC arrive doesn't even have wimax support. I'm sure it would have been alot easier if it did. I'm guessing it would be a full time job for someone to take along the port i.e getting wimax to work and etc. So right now I don't believe there's even a cdma wp7 phone with wimax yet. Bummer

Alright. Well I know everyone around here has been eager for a REAL custom ROM for the XPRT. I'm gonna start working on CyanogenMod 10 or 10.1 or whatever. But heres my background. I'm an 18 year old high school student on my senior year with not so good grades at the moment in math and economics. I don't exactly go to the best school, I'm unemployed, and I live in a group home. So I don't exactly have lots of time and resources on my hands. Enough about me. What I'm really here for is to ask for a team of people. Whether you want to be a future developer, you like computers, you like potatoes, whatever. I need some people to collaborate with me. I've included some links below along with prerequisites. Respond to the post or PM if interested.

Prerequisites: A 64 bit version of Linux (Ubuntu), A fairly decent size hard drive, (preferably) 2 or more gigabytes of RAM, the better the computer the better! Some persistence, patience, and time.

Get to know Ubuntu. I personally suggest 12.04. Ubuntu is Linux. Android is Linux. The more you learn in Ubuntu is quite useful in every other Linux powered device in the world. And trust me. There's more and more of them every day. I hope you find Linux just as amazing as I do!

There´s ubuntu phone OS coming sometime soon even....
yes, you got to learn your way around, but it is as easy and frustrating as using a mac when youre used to windows...just be patient, you´ll get the things done, but in a different way
,So blackfire, so how is that custom kernel uploaded? I remember when I used to own the def+, the only way to upgrade the kernel was modding the GB one to get some features working (battery and hw acceleration) on CM10.
Oh yeah, the Ubuntu for phones OS looks cool. I was hoping someone here might be interested in porting it once it becomes good enough to use as a daily driver.

I'm not too sure. As I've said, I can't work on this myself yet still. But from what I know, using the stock kernel as a base you can rebuild using things like linaro and whatnot. Kernel development is no easy task.

You'd be abusing that opportunity if all you want is a free phone out of it. That offer is there for developers who need official Firefox OS hardware to perform hardware tests on their application they are developing which can't be accurately tested via a SDK such as Camera, GPS or NFC capabilities.
If you are interested in App development for Firefox OS then I suggest you test your apps via the Firefox browser on your PC using this addon:

You maybe are right but I don't want the device for nothing.I want it because I want to test some apps that I coded which can't be tested via Simulator or something. It needs real hardware so a real device. And if you don't know I hate making something just to get something free.I make apps,ROMs or kernels just because I love Android and everything around of it.No offense and as I said before you have right but first make sure for the personality of someone or just stop telling b*ll****s.Sorry for my bad words but this is how I felt when I read this!
