PDF Issues [IDENTIFIED] - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

With everyone's input the problems importing PDFs have been identifed as a bug in certain versions of S-Note. The list is below. Trying to load a newer version of the S-Note APK doesn't work because there's other associated files that need to be updated. So the good news is we know what's going on. The bad news is that those affected need to wait for Samsung to push out an updated ROM with a newer version of S-Note. Hopefully that'll be JB in a couple of weeks. If someone with or without issues has a different version of S-Note post it so I can keep the list updated so people can see whether their version has the bug or not.
Different S-Note versions and their results:
5r8988V03 - Works
5r9077V03 - Works
5r9292V03 - Has issues
5r9830V03 - Has issues
5r10645FV03 - Works
5r12434FV03 - Works
5r13095FV03 - Works (Newest Version)

Ok so, the pdfs I was trying to open were handouts from college, so I don't know what program was used. But they are powerpoint slides (or other program that can do presentations) converted to pdf.
They are around 25-30 slides long (one slide per page), 1-1,5 mb, text and images, with color.
I'm able to open them with polaris, although in one of them the special characters are not recognized (I also don't know what's up with that, when I open it in other apps the special characters show fine and polaris doesn't have problems with special characters with the other files).
My version of SNote is 5r9292V03. I'm using the N8000 model, international.
I also should add that the pdfs were downloaded directly from the stock browser and are stored in the tablet itself. Later, I'm going to put them on a micro sd and try to import them from there.
In the other thread you asked me to send you the pdfs, but they have my teachers name on there :/ i'll find other pdf (i tried with a cientific article from google scholar iand it wouldn't import it too). How do I send it to you?

Just upload them somewhere like Dropbox and provide a link. Interesting what you mentioned about special characters. You're also on a different/later version of S-Note than my N8000 is.

Two very diferent types of pdfs, both of them making SNote fc (I can't seem to import any pdf, actually). The 2nd link is the one polaris office has problems with the special characters.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to try to help and understand what's going on. I really apreciate it and I'm sure others do too

Hey, just wanted to add to the thread by saying that I have the same version of SNote as Cocax and I also have the same problems.
Also got the N8000 international version.

My S-Note version is also 5r9292V03. Most PDFs I've tried to import are also college notes and they all open in other pdf viewers such as Polaris or ezPDF.
Edti: I have the Canadian 32 GB 8010 model.

Interesting results. The PPT file imported fine and I could edit and re-save it. The other document imported fine also but it showed as seven blank pages. I tried to open it in eBook and it crashed. Using ezPDF Reader it opened. I printed it and scanned it in to a PDF using Nitro. S-Note then imported it fine.
To get the PPT file in to S-Note I downloaded it from Dropbox to my external SD card and then went in to S-Note and found it using "import." Did you do the same thing? If so, there's something different between our S-Note versions. That or you may have something else running on your device that's creating a conflict. Below is the link to the Nitro scan of your document in Dropbox. Download it and see if you can open it.

I have had no issues at all with pdf but thought I would try these two. I have the same results as you do here with the one file being blank My s nove version is 5r12434FV03
Note is US 8013

For those having issues... In S-Note's app settings do a force stop, clear cache, and clear data to see if it changes anything. Save anything you might have in S-Note somewhere on your SD in case it gets blown away.

It crashed the same way as before with your scan. It starts to import the pages and when it reaches the last one (right before when it's supposed to open) the circle stops spinning and after like 2 secs it fc...I don't have a micro sd card wwith me right now, but tomorrow I'll try to import from one

Here's my guess so for. My version is the original shipped version (Brazil) and hasn't been updated and I'm not having any issues. The latest version which is also included in today's U.S. update isn't having any issues either. So it would appear the middle version has some type of bug. I don't know if that's the version that was in the earlier U.S. update that was pulled but that may have been one of the reasons they stopped deploying it. So the good news is it's a temporary problem. The bad news is there's not much that can be done until Samsung pushes out an update. With them saying JB is due “very soon” and the SGS3 already receiving it I’d guess we’ll get it in about five weeks or so.
There will always be some funkiness with certain PDF files because of formatting type stuff but that's pretty much the nature of the beast. Your document coming up blank in S-Note and crashing Adobe eBook being an example. I'm sure Samsung wouldn't have wasted their time developing their own PDF engine so the code's probably licensed from someone else. Managing PDF's via s/w isn't rocket science so I'd assume updates will get S-Note to where it needs to be.
At least we know we aren’t all crazy and the one’s saying it “worked” were right as well as the one’s saying it didn’t.

I tried to force stop s note and clear cache, but still have The problem!

Is your S-Note version 5r9292V03? If so it probably won't be fixed until Samsung rolls out an update.

Just want to add another s-note version, 5r8988V03, 8010 16GB, Mexico shipped version, I haven't had fc's importing pdf just some color changes and special char not showing.
Tried the two files uploaded by Cocax and got same results as BarryH_GEG, ppt imported ok and 7 blank pages.

Yeah, it seems to be a problem with our version of SNote. That actually makes me kind of relieved, because it means that it will probably be updated and hopefully solved. My biggest concern was that this was a more obscure problem, some kind of confict between something that we couldn't figure out that only happened with some of us and it would stay that way even with jelly bean. But as you said, it's probable that samsung is already aware of this issue since what appears to be the latest version doesn't have it.
I guess I'll wait for jelly bean then and hope it will solve this issue. Still, I'm going to try to have more people coming here to say their version and if they have this problem.
Thanks so, so much for your help

I have 5r9292v03 on xwalg4 firmware n8010 Australia, it has the snote pdf problem.
Simple test use snote to export 1 page, then try to import == fc

Mine below version..asia.. also fc when import..

Sorry for the late reply, I am all over the place atm.
I have a GT-N8010 from Australia and it is running 5r9292V03 S Note.
I will upload all the files that i tried in a zip later with names representing what they are (e.g. 2 kb one line PDF, PDF from word, PDF from cutepdf, etc)
Thanks for setting up the thread and asking around for different versions of S Note apk.

Later I'll try your pdf's on my note 10.1.
Did you also bought Galaxy Note on the 30% discount we had in Portugal last weekend?

[Q] Quickoffice HD 4.0.25 - SAMSUNG Tablet

Our beautiful 10.1v came with this (see title) quickoffice suite preinstalled which seemed to be very nice. Sadly, it isn't (at least for me) as everytime I try to modify an excel doc, or even make a new sheet it crashes on zooming or resizing cells. The strange thing, is it doesn't FC it just kills the document (obviously trashing every modification I made to it) and returns by its own to quickoffice file browser.
Updating it says my version is up to date, but then I noticed that market version is way newer (4.5.15), so I decided to buy it, but as I don't want to root yet I can't uninstall this SAMSUNG Tablet version. so probably i would end up with 2 quickoffice suites installed.. am I correct?
any suggestions to avoid this problem?
thanks

I see one of two things happening, either you won't be able to install it due to it already being installed or it will just upgrade the version already there.
Personally, I think the first is more like it.
thanks, finally I did purchase it and installed ok. The result was it ended having both suites installed. Seems that packages are different so it doesnt recognizes it as the same application. Anyway I tried it and had the same problems so I deleted it and asked for refund.
I have already purchased and installed on my desire documents to go, so I decided to give it a try on my 10.1v and it worked very well but it is not honeycomb optimized . Are there any other honeycomb optimized office suites?
Thanks again

Writing on PDFs?

Well i know the Kno is on here and you can do it on that, but is there any other apps? The kno crashes which sucks. Im looking for an eBook reader/pdf reader that you can actually write on the pages, mainly for SAT tests that are in pdf format, itd be great to be able to write on them and then circle the correct answer. and then have a answer key on the split screen to see if its right. Maybe someone will have any ideas?

Try "iAnnotate PDF" from the Play Store.

EZ PDF also works for annotations but unfortunately split screen only works with the proprietary Samsung apps.

I also recommend EZ PDF, it's really good for annotating PDFs and is generally quite fast too. It's even almost usable for drawing on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a finger or a capacitive stylus but I'm anxious to see how it works with the Note.
Repligo works great
Actually the latest version of Adobe Reader for Android works great to annotate.

Mine's doing ok with importing & exporting PDF's, but it's a hassle to go through this process every time. Any chance there's a way to make Android recognize S Note as a possible default program for opening PDFs? Currently, Android only gives me the options of Kno and Polaroid Office.

I haven't used Adobe Reader myself, but those who have reports it doesn't have palm rejection, whereas ezPDF does. Since you use it maybe you can confirm or reject the report about Reader.

Ditching SNote for LectureNotes...

Well after 2 weeks of testing, I think I have to make the decision to use LectureNotes as my primary note taking application rather than SNote. It was tough becuase I would much prefer to use the native note taking app, but here are my reasons why in case it helps anyone else make their decision. To give a background and level set, I have been a tablet pc user for many years and have grown very dependant on OneNote for taking customer meeting notes. I always felt that using a tablet with a pen allowed me to still connect with my customers rather than typing notes. I went paperlass many years ago when I quickly realized that old notebooks could not be referenced on the road and scanning was just not something I wanted to spend my time doing.
On to my reasons.
1. I have found LetureNotes to be much more customizable than SNote.
a. You can select which buttons are on the menu bar, each one individaully
b. You can do away with the silly (imo) icons that respresent the notebooks and have a simple list which is much faster when you have a lot of notebooks and sub-notebooks
c. You can literally pick each feature that you want to use or not - system bar, page numbers, zoom bars, pencil box
d. You can set it to revert back to the pen after a single use of the eraser, zoom, or cutter
2. I have found it to be much more like OneNote in that you can do the following
a. You can lasso tect with either a box or customer loop and move that text around on the screen - important when needing to re-organize you notes during a meeting so that they make sense later
b. You can add a date/time stamp into your notes to remind you later
c. You can erase with either the eraser or you can use the undo/redo buttons to move backwards and forwards thru your penstrokes.
3. There are more levels of organization. SNote only allows you to go 5 notebooks deep. I am note sure how far LN goes, but I think in my test notebook I had at least 10 notebooks deep which is more than I would ever need
4. You can add a page to a note with a single click
5. This is huge - you can set lecture notes to keep the screen on even after the tablet has locked itself. I am forced to use a PIN lock in order to access my work email. If I am in a meeting with a customer and had to unlock the screen if it locked up that would be onconvenient. It also allows it to stay on at my desk in case I have to pick up up quickly for an unexpected phone call.
6. Last thing I can think of for now is that I have swapped 3 emails with the developer for help and suggestions. I also tried this app about 6 months ago with my HTC Flyer and find it to be much better now. Probably a lot to do with the device, but I think it has also improved greatly.
I know a lot of people already like LN and many would say that the splitscreen of Snote outweighs all those things. I only hope that being able to use other apps in splitscreen mode will come in the future.
Just wanted to share incase that helps anyone else.
Yes LectureNotes is great but:
You can't import pda files for markup.
You can't type.
You can't link notes to calendar events.
You can't do split screen.
I feel that Snotes will get better with every OTA. Still, for just taking notes in class, Lecture Notes is a fine option.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk 2
You can type but You have to hunt it in the menu to do so. Overall lam sticking with snote for many reasons. I'm not the avid writer that the OP is and I consider myself more 50/50 between writing and typing, or hopefully this tablet will help me to get to 50% writing!
So from my usage snote is a much more user-friendly and functional app for me.
Per a thread I posted about Polaris and Dropbox enabling me to ink the same document on my tablet and PC, I am trying out Word documents as notebooks. Here's that thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856691
I am also an avid OneNote user, and FWIW, I have found Freenote to be the closest app experience to it. It is packed with features. But it is also not intuitive, and even having used it for a while I still sometimes forget how to do things that should be simple.

Typing is coming. Dev is working on it.
Split screen - meh. Don't currently care for it much. Needs work.
I'm sure the dev with do the pda import thing too, and if not, there are other avenues.
All you have to do is ask and the dev addresses it. Best CS I ever saw except for Amazon. Way better than Sammy.

On LN can I set a black background with white pen? I know it is odd but it is actually much easier for me to write on and read white pen on black background like a blackboard and chalk. Can we import .pdf's or images as backgrounds?
One benefit of using LN is that it frees you to run CM10 without worrying about losing Snotes.
How does LN doe at syncing with Evernote? Snotes does that very poorly.
Just gave LN a try for a little while. I found the inking to be quite hit and miss. Very often it would not detect the beginning of my pen stroke. Also i didnt find the pen marks to be a smooth and antialiased as in Snote.
I just dont want to give up Snotes system wide integration and im not one of these people who thinks cm10 is so amazing i am willing to sacrifice functionality just to have it.

LN is great for syncing because it saves pages individual not in a big file, so you don't have to transfer the whole document, only the modified/added pages. The only thing i miss is a 100% zoom button and the possibility to import from clipboard like snote does.
LN allows you to back up your files to any cloud service (dropbox). It breaks the pages into individual files, which is not ideal, but at least I can view the files on my pc. The back up is also very fast.

For engineer style drawings I like blue background with white pens.
Makes me feel like I am on MythBusters
I have made a Templates folder and have all sorts of templates like notes/engineering/graph/yellow legal pad (with pdf background)
I have a month at a time diary with pdf background and put home stuff on layer 2 and work stuff on layer 3 so I can choose what to view.
For syncing I am using dropsync to send my pages to dropbox. best solution I have found so far.
So you are importing a blue background, then, as your solution? I like your folder of templates idea. Hope you don't mind if I borrow it?

Of course not, go right ahead.
For engineering type drawing I am just setting the background to blue with the notebook settings.
For legal pad I used a pdf I got a open office template for from here opened with openoffice (actually libreoffice) and exported to pdf
For calendars I went to here and made a month at a time.
To make a new notebook from a template without pdf inside simply tap "+" and then tap on the "template" at top and choose.
To make a new notebook from a template with a pdf inside, long press the template notebook and choose duplicate notebook.
For the current month and notes I long press notebook and "Create Shortcut", a trick I found; because opening the main shortcut takes you back to your last location. make a shortcut and rename the file it points to and now you have a shortcut that always goes to the top notebook board. (little pop up winge, but that is ok)
Hope that helps.
P.S. I have been in touch with Markus and he is very helpful.

Question: Where you able to move the section of the application that stors your notes into DropSync so that when you make a change it automatically syncs that to Dropbox?
Markus told me about that option when I was trying to see if he would be able to get a sync to Evernote, but I am unsure how to get it done. I went into My Files and found the dropbox folder and the LN folder. I tried creating a new folder in the dropbox folder that way to see if it would show up in my dropbox, but it did not work.
Is tehre a way to have LN sync anytime you make a change to a file?
Also, if you created a template in PDF, how does that work? Everytime you open it you are annotating a pdf file and it saves itself again like that? I would love to have PDF files of all my LN's in my dropbox with the same folder tree.
Thanks.

Rooted Nook: Problems using Dropbox / Pocket (Read it Later) / Evernote?

Hello everybody,
last year I bought a Kindle 4 (non-touch) and I liked the eInk reading experience so far. The main reason for me: I am travelling a lot for business and I prefer packing light.
But at the same time I am an avid Android user (Galaxy Nexus at the moment) and love taking a break checking my newsfeeds with Google Reader throughtout the day, while sending longer articles to the App "Pocket" (formerly Read It Later).
This was the main thing missing on my kindle...as it just didn't work natively. The detour sending the articles reformated with e.g. Istapaper to my kindle-whipsernet mailadress is just uncomfortable.
I was searching through the forum and kept watching YouTube Videos about the rooted Nooks and other ebook readers with Android on it, because I wanted to find out if it works flawless with apps such as:
Dropbox (keeps loads of work related pdfs in there)
Pocket (formerly Read It Later)
Evernote
What is your experience with it?
The nook so far seems to be the best solution for my requirements.
And I actually like the glow feature and that the buttons now work with custom Roms. Or did I get that wrong?
Thank you very much in advance!
I hope I am not asking too much. If I was just too stupid to find information please give me a hint Thanks!
Leo
My personal experience
Evernote works, sometimes it Force Closes, I think Dropbox works perfectly, and Pocket currently is not supported; maybe you should try an older version, when it was still Read It Later.
I'm pretty satisfied with my Nook, I don't know if the new Kindle Paperwhite is based on Android, but if it is I'll consider getting one.
I can confirm that Read It Later (previous version of Pocket) works perfectly.
I got the apk out of one of the other threads, but I should be able to dig up what version it was later.
For Dropbox I'm using app called Dropsync which support two way synchronization - so far I'didn't have any problems with it. Works fast and easy.
Instead of Pocket u can use Instafetch (supports Instapaper.com).

Thank you very much
I can live with force closes from time to time, as long as I would have access to notes that I can just leave open on a screen that doesn't consume any energy!

That is fine enough
Thank you very much!
As I am not the biggest fan of the new blown-up pocket interface anyways

Yes, I am a paid user for dropsync by myself. I love it!
Great to hear that it works flawless Thanks!
Thank you all for your comments!
(Sorry, was absent over the weekend and last days.)
Now I am trying to get a Nook in Germany :victory:
Yesterday I finally received my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight and love it so far.
The feature of sideloading custom android Launcher and being able to use apps is just phenomenal.
I rooted using NookManager and installed the gapps package. That so far works flawless!
But, however, I am still missing Pocket / Read it Later
Does anyone still have a working apk?
There are around 1000 articles saved in my pocket and I can't just switch to Instapaper.
Furthermore...does anyone have a apk of the stock Google Reader?
Thanks
Okay...there we go:

Read it Later Pro v.1.3 :good::laugh:
Found it an old Lifehacker article, called "Turn your rooted Nook into the ultimate ereader with these 10 apps"
http://lifehacker.com/5926798/turn-your-rooted-nook-into-the-ultimate-ereader-with-these-10-apps
Anyways...worth a read
Getting all set up.
Dropbox, DropSync, Evernote, Gmail, Calendar, Read It Later, Opera Mobile, Maps, Google Drive, Google Reader, Amazon Kindle, AnkiDroid, Translate, Urban Dictionary, Dict.cc Plus

You may want to check using your own RSS feed from pocket. Just add it to e.g. RssDemon, which works great on nook.

Oh thanks!
I didn't know that there is an RSS feed!
But I can't imagine that there is a synchronisation?
Because RSS doesn't allow any feedback from the client if I am not mistaken.
(I am not home right now...so I can't test it )

I works just as standard RSS, if there is something new to download detected, it is downloaded. But only once app perform time based checks (every hour for example). So it is not a push service, like in mails ( right the time one comes it is downloaded, i presume)
Ah...hmm...yeah then I could just read them directly in my RSS reader I guess
The temporary storage of articles that I want to read later is what comes in handy
Well the Read it Later APK from above still works, even though the scrolling is a bit odd on the nook. I have to perform quite long strokes on the screen to get it to move forward.
Anyways...better than nothing :good:
Too bad that Google will discontinue the service for Google Reader...it was such a convenient webapp
Evernote has stopped working for me - the screen always just blinks for a second when I'm trying to open the app. I tried deleting the cache, deleting the dalvik cache, reinstalling the app and rebooting - nothing helped. I wonder, if this is related to the latest update 5.0.2? Has anybody elso got similar isues? Thanks!

Annotation features of polaris office

As we all know polaris office is kind of limited in many ways in terms of function and performance. The only time I use it however is when I need to add handwriting annotations for both word documents and PowerPoint slides. These are nifty features and I've tried a few but yet to find any office apps which can do it. Any suggestions?

Kingsoft Office brought out an earlier version of their office suite that supported the original note's s-pen. It's still available at their website. Download and install it from there, not the Playstore. Do not update it as the update no longer supports the s-pen. http://www.kingsoftstore.com/android-office-samsung

Thanks mke.
Kingsoft Office is my fav Office app since it's the only one (AFAIK) that can read and shows equations written in Word files (in the PC, with the standard "Equation Editor" or with the Commercial "MathType") then imported in the GNote 10.1. You can't edit them (they are imported as images) but at least you can see them with Kingsoft Office.
All other office apps I've tried so far (quite many) fails to even show them .
Having said that, thanks for your advice about using the Kingsoft Office app (downloadable here) that support the S-Pen. I didn't know about that and I've replaced with it the app that I had previosly downloaded from Google Play.
Anyway I'm at a loss at using the S-Pen for handwritten annotation.
I can annotate, but I can't see any option to change the ink color or size or to erase some annotation (apart from the undo option).
Maybe there's none of these features, or maybe I'm missing some setting or some way to access them through the menu.
Can somebody help me?
When using the samsung s-pen supported version, you can add on screen comments in different colors by pressing the s-pen's button once while the stylus is touching the screen. This brings up the s-pen's color/pen/brush/pencil settings. After you've made your selections annotate away. For revisions, you must go the traditional route of choosing the keyboard s-pen, which then gets converted into text. I've included 2 screen shots showing the s-pen option box and then different colored comments.

Thanks! It works!
I'd never have found it out by myself.
Anyway it seems that there's pressure sensitivity while writing but it disappears just after the drawing is processed into the document.
There's no eraser too?

Rather than sensitivity, line width seems to be the only option (in the s-pen settings box). So far, I've not found a way to erase so I use the undo tool bar feature. There are no real instructions that I've found; perhaps there's an erase feature buried that I've not discovered. I don't know if this developer would be willing to update the s-pen version if enough note 10.1 users would express interest. If they updated it and only made it a paid app, I'd be willing to buy it. I think it's the best Android office suite to date.
Thanks for this! though the spen functionality isn't as good as polaris'. Ah I can't find one single office app which fulfill all my needs. When is Microsoft office app coming to android?

Unfortunately, I don't think so, but I haven't found any online instructions for the s-pen enabled app so I've just stumbled on things by trial and error. I wish Samsung had encoraged this developer to update s-pen support for the note 10.1 and note 2. This is one of the best Android office suites, but the updated version doesn't support the s-pen.

I don't understand your question.
If you are referring to "Equation Editor" it's part of MS Office for PC. Can be installed as an extra and can then be used in Word, Excel, etc.
I don't know about more recent versions of Office but I think something similar is there too.
Anyway that's OT here.

Last version (v. 5.3.2) is here in GooglePlay.
For the other (older) version with S-Pen support (Kingsoft Office - for Android Samsung Galaxy Note - v. 5.2.128694-en00040) you go here and download the .apk file. (android_office_samsung.apk).
Then you copy the .apk file somewhere in your GNote 10.1 and (with any file manager) tap on it.
In so doing, the app will be installed in your tablet.
Anyway, before doing that, be sure to have enabled Unknown sources in "Settings - Security", otherwise you won't be able to install manually an app this way.

You're welcome
Anyway, as a personal consideration, I'm thinking of returning to the most recent (5.3.2) Google Play general version.
It seems that The GNote/SPen version development has stopped and it doesn't offer very useful SPen improvements apart from the possibility to change the handwritten notes pen colors and size.
For instance there's no eraser and (apparently) no pressure sensitivity.
Furthermore the navigation is more awkward: you haven't the option to turn off the writing pen so that you can't use the pen just to scroll a document but must remember to use your fingers instead to do that.
So I think I'll go back to the newest general version, waiting to see if the SPen version resumes development.
