hi all i have taken about 4hours today testing the camera to the end of my will, now i hope this thread will help other and i intend to include pics of every content and do a full review of the htc hd2 camera but here's a few samples while i get the review on the way
TIPS FOR BETTER PICTURES
- turn off wide-screen in the settings for true 5mp, if u have it on u get lower res Normal screen = 2592 x 1944 / Wide-screen = 2592 x 1552
- set white balance to the sunny settings in all condition not auto or u will get weird colors with most of ur pics (see samples below)
SAMPLE PICTURES UNEDITED - 5mp + very fine mode + touch focus + sunny (not auto whitebalance)
click for full res, untouched quality
the above pics where static objects great focus
now to compare auto whitebalance to sunny none auto setting all pics still full res, untouched quality
auto settings -------/------- sunny setting
the above pics where static objects great focus
auto settings -------/------- sunny setting

the above pics where is moving objects focus had issues here

the above pics where static objects great focus also high light levels
SAMPLE VIDEOS UNEDITED - 640x480 + MPEG4 + sunny setting + touch focus

my kid kindly became the model for these lol
EDIT: for people are unsure about the realness of these pics please download the originals here, just look at the image properties for proof

Thanks for your samples....
...the pictures seem to show a great deal of sharpening on them. Did you apply that in post-prod, or is it done automatically in-camera?
Also, as soon as I get my HD2 (which has been stuck in a post office all week-end... grrrr!!!!!), I will try to take a reference picture of a netural gray card, and then subtract it from real-life photos using photoshop. This should really get rid of the magenta color cast in the middle of each photo, though it would be a pain to have to do this extra step for each picture one wishes to keep...
Purely amazing? For me these look barely usable, but then I'm coming from an i8910, so I guess it depends on what you're used to...
If those are unusable then I'd like to see the pics the i8910 can produce, as to me the top pictures in macro mode look pretty good for a HTC camera
EDIT: Ok so for fun I decided to look up what the i8910 can do and ....wow!
Oh well, I rarely take pics with a phone so the HTC camera will have to make do
Those who come from WM phones the HD2 produces some of the best images and videos. At least there is a substantial improvement from the predecessor Touch HD.
Coming from the best camera phones from Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc. the quality is just passable.

hi mate some pointers,
1) Samsung i8910 OmniaHD = 8mp camera and omnia camera are good
2) we need to see full unedited pics to compare noise
good pics though
For me it looks like the HD2 Camera-App uses very agressive noise-reducing. Thats why Pictures look more fuzzy with lack of fine details.
Some users tell that this can be avoided by increasing the sharpnes in the camera-settings.
Please, some HD2 retail user can do this and post some more pictures here?
Yes that is true but megapixels only tells half the story, it's mostly down to the quality of the lens. I could find you similar examples taken with a 5MPx camera from Nokia...
Anyway here are much larger images. They're not full size but I doubt you'll find much noise in these images.
http://forum2.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=81427&page=31
Scroll to about mid point.
They might be a big improvement for a HTC device, but they are very much inferior to the photos from my old N95, or even my original Fuji 3MP digital camera.
Photos from an i8910 or a Satio are in a completely different league.
Still, I guess I should be grateful that HTC have made some improvement in this area, and I'm not actually buying the phone for it's photo taking ability.
Bagpuss.

very nice indead
Red tint in center
I notice a red tint in every sample pictures or videos taken with HD2 (I don't have one, seeing samples). Is this true or I need an eye check?
Amazing?
This pics looks like ****. At 100% have a lot of noise, bad colors and a constant pink tint in the center of the screen.
The camera of the HD2 is a really disaster like all the others of HTC.
Still though, they show improvement from previous HTC outings, for which I'm grateful.
geo tagging
Hi guys, I can't find the settings to turn geo tagging on when taking pictures, is it not possible with this phone?
Im talking about embeding location data on the image exif, I use to have nokia phones in the past, n96, n82, n95..
footprints is neat but I don't see it adding gps information on to the photo,
example of this use is when you upload images to flickr the gps location shows up on flickr.
any info on this appriciated
I think if you check the tweaks thread there is a post about turning on Geotagging.
If its not there try searching, I know I've seen at post on this in the last couple of days.
EDIT: Its in the tips thread (now stickied).
hi their focus is weird as touch focus is on which activates (spot focus) so u will notice because that the middle of the pics are focused and the rest isnt as the pics where at such close distance to the object, i will try and show the other focus modes soon

Absolutely FALSE. Pictures taken with TouchHD are by far sharper and with much better definition for details. Just take a look at those shots:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aldovanzeeland/3579556212/sizes/l/
And then.. take a look at this picture taken by the HD2.. utterly blurred, just look at the trees..

I suppose, however, that part of the problem can be overcome by just removing the plastic protection from the front of the camera.. like we did with HTC Kaiser...

Hello DAMIEN123_666,
Please increasing the sharpness in your camera-settings (or set it to maximun sharpness)
And then take some pictures in good light condition with a lot of detail (maybe like the picture with the trees)
I would apreciate a lot if you would do that for us.

Well, thats true for the moment and the given sample pics - i cannot belive that the TouchHD cam is bether.
I hope it is only a question of the sharpness setting!
No matter what I do I can't seem to get a clear picture. Everything is blurry. I can't figure out if my expectations are just too high.....I came from an LG G4 but still. How are you guys getting good pictures? I'm talking 5% of the pictures I take are passable. Maybe I have a faulty camera? Anyone else find the camera to be garbage? I've looked through the camera threads and people seem happy overall. It can't just be me.

I tried Open Camera and am using Google camera currently. And I'm no Ansel Adams but I takes lot of pictures and have always been able to figure out how to take a decent shot on every device I've owned until this one.

Are the pictures blurry or noisy?
They're blurry. That the thing, that's new to me. Good lighting with as steady a hand as I can muster still results in a blurry shot. I'll take one now and post if I can.
Sent from my XT1575 using XDA Free mobile app
This is probably a stupid suggestion, but have you tried just wiping the lens and making sure it's clean and clear? Honestly I've had that problem before where it's been smudged without my noticing and it obviously makes every picture screwed up. I know it's not likely, but something that's worth a shot I've found! Other than that I know nothing about cameras and coming from an HTC One I know nothing of a quality photo...
No, I agree with @jiggyb21, I just bought the Moxo X and came from the Galaxy S6. The camera on the Moto seems like pure garbage to me, and I think it's because we are coming from phones with superior cameras. People who came from phones with worse cameras will obviously think the Moto X camera is great right?
I don't have the steadiest of hands, but I haven't run into a problem like what you are describing. Have you given some thought that you might have a faulty device? It uses phase detection for focus, so if every picture is blurry you may have an issue with the actual camera module.
I've tried a few camera apps, and though pics come out good, man do I really have to keep a steady hand. Move it a hair and any text blurs. Why not lean it up against something to take your handling out of equation and voice command take pic and see what comes up.

It would be nice if you could post some samples. I'm not in love with the camera but I have consistently been able to snap photos that are good enough quickly
I don't even know if I uploaded the pics correctly and if not I'll fix it later while I'm watching the Giants beat on the Eagles. Something interesting happened while taking these pictures. I am in 100% optimal lighting conditions and these are basically the best 4 shots I could possibly get out of this camera. I asked around to the people here on the jobsite with me and everyone thought the pictures were just fine. Yes, they aren't blurry to the point of being unreadable by any means but they are quite blurry. I guess it could just be me but I would still argue it's not. Before anyone says anything about how this is just a smartphone and it's only a $400 smartphone at that and it's good enough, I know that and maybe people who haven't used a good smartphone camera don't know what they're missing. If that's the case, fine, and that's why I started this thread was to find out. My last 4 phones were Xperia ZL, Z2, Z3 and LG G4. We all know the G4 and S6, to name two, have incredible cameras and have OIS. The first 3 I named weren't and don't. They were all rated as average cameras and they don't have OIS. I have hundreds of pictures taken in similar conditions with the Sonys and they didn't suffer from blur. Like I said these 4 pictures were surprisingly good IMO. Most I take are MUCH more blurred and most of the pictures I take aren't in this perfect a light. So I'll have to post more pictures from my collection at home to really show off the bad ones.
If you zoom in a little on the pics its almost a 3D art poster kind of eye strain. Again, I'm not talking about level of detail, just the blurriness.
I think part of the pictures of blurry because of shallow depth of field due to lower aperture setting in the software algorithm. It seems the software is trying to compress too much noise. Although I have not personally used it, try the following link for the alternative camera and report back the results. Hope this works out for you:

Not really. I have a DSLR so that's my standard on PQ. In daylight, nothing should be blurry at 100% zoom on even a $200 phone. You don't need flagship to take a good photo at 1/125 second shutter speed. It's either defective camera unit or something is wrong with the setting. Just look at all the photos people have posted on this forum.

It's a f 2.0 lens. You gonna have blurriness around the edge of photo if you are taking it that close. It has nothing to do with OIS.
In any case, you can read the professional review of the XPE here.

If you're in good light, this is arguably one of the best phone cameras out there. Your pictures should be nice and crisp. Try this: take your camera outside during the day and take a few shots of the horizon or something. Then post the pictures here and we'll tell you (hopefully) if you've got a faulty unit. It sounds like your phone is not performing as mine is. I'm even satisfied with some indoor shots with this camera. I have done professional photography, so I am well-versed in cameras (color, WB, ISO, exposure, f-stop, etc.).
Even from reading reviews and comparisons from the web and tech reviewers, this camera performs with, and sometimes beats the other current flagship models out there. I happen to agree with them. From reading this thread though, maybe your camera isn't the only one with this problem.
Anyway, try to post a couple of pictures up. A link to an external host like photobucket or something like that would probably be better than uploading straight to XDA, due to compression and size limits.

Those photos don't look that bad. What sort of blurriness are you talking about? The bokeh from taking close up pictures? Bokeh is a natural blurring effect you get from a larger aperature lens not being able to capture the entire depth of field. That's normal. The focused part of those pictures don't look blurry to me.
As an aside, any indoor shot will not be optimal lighting, unless you have a lighting kit or something to really brighten up the scene. Optimal lighting would be outside, and when the sun is not directly overhead. This is a very quick summation of optimal light, but you get the point.

Thanks for your tip. After turning off NR in advanced setting, I tried a couple of indoor shots of some writings on my note book. Please excuse the terrible lighting and my bad handwriting, but it's very easy to tell which shot had the NR off. Yes the one with NR off has a dirtier background, but the pen strokes has much better contrast from the paper. That's probably one of the reasons why the default setting produces blurry photos.
Yea when taking photos of dogs in low light I only managed to have 1 or 2 come out bad and that was from me moving the phone. But then again I am used to shooting 50asa film freehand.
lack of optical image stabilization rearing it's ugly head.. who knows why the hell they couldn't use a sensor with it, but it's quite disappointing. but turning off nr helps a lot.. we need a dev to come in and work on a true camera mod for this phone only. I tried to get my bud xdabbeb to make a mod (as anyone who had the g2 knows his xcam mod was killer!) but he isn't planning on buying this phone. ugh.

Thank you and this is why I wanted feedback. I posted the pictures I did (close-up), because, to me, they were the most objectifiable shots I could take while at work. The text just isn't as clear as other shots I've taken with other phones. I called it optimal lighting because I was in a 6x6 room with three windows and a skylight on a sunny day with no direct sunlight. The lighting felt like the kind any decent camera would take advantage of. To me, that's optimal..but I understand that's a strong word and not scientific. The fact that it scores so highly in professional reviews is what has me frustrated. The only thing I can deduce is that a professional, lab environment is more controlled and repeatable than my layman's point and shoot approach. They must be using a tripod, right? This phone has everything else I want and I just want to like the camera. So believe me, I want to figure out how to enjoy the camera. I will take more shots tomorrow and post them and I hope you and others with knowledge will chime in. I just know that with the other smartphone cameras I mentioned earlier, 8 out of 10 shots were keepers and with this one it's more like 1 out of 10 and that's not jiving with everyone else. Thanks again.

looking at the pictures, they seem just fine to me. the blurred part (glue) at the bottom of the bottle is just from it using a wide aperture. the images are not tack sharp but this is a cellphone camera and small dof. I dont see motion blur.
problem with auto cameras is that you dont know what priority it has. to use a wide aperture to get a decent shutter speed and not have to use high iso or the opposite.
for proper exposure you have to adjust and juggle the 3 parameters (iso/aperture/shutter) to get a proper image.
wish the phone had controls like the LG G4 which has aperture iso shutter WB and EC.
Background
While the Z5 has demonstrated that it can take good daytime photos and excellent video (thanks to its closed-loop actuator), low-light performance has been a concern, due to a lack of OIS and its smaller pixels.
I had the opportunity to borrow an LG G4 to test low-light conditions with the Z5. Testing took a while, as I needed to understand the different scene selections of the Z5's Superior Auto mode. I chose two classic, well-known, posters for the basis of the analysis: Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back and Breakfast at Tiffany's. The posters feature both artwork and text, which should provide a good mix of characteristics for comparison. Also, the posters can easily be found online, so no reference photos were necessary.
Test conditions
The SW:ESB poster was lit from a single, overhead, incandecent light bulb (60 watt), which was roughly 10 ft/3 m away. The Breakfast at Tiffany's poster had no nearby light source - the light comes from the next room over 20+ ft/ 7+ m away.
All photos were taken in automatic mode for both phones. The Z5 was set to 8 MP in 16:9 ratio. I had tried set up the photos to look as similar as possible.
Camera setup
The SW:ESB night pics were taken while sitting down. The Z5 photos are as follows:
a) Night mode icon (i.e. moon icon)
b) Night mode icon + tripod icon
c) Night mode icon + tripod icon, phone holder stabilized (not hand-held)
The Breakfast at Tiffany's pics were taken while standing up, with arms in an elevated position. This is was due to the fact that the poster was mounted higher on the wall. It should represent the Z5's worse case scenario, as there was no way to stay completely steady due to the awkward posture and poor lighting.
Note: I had to re-take the Breakfast at Tiffany's photo, as I discovered that the initial photo had moved the focus to the top of the poster, due to face detection. I manually adjusted the focus rather than cut off Audrey's elegant face. When face detection icon was not on screen, the low-light icon (i.e. candle icon) would come on.
Link to photos (7-zipped):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2Put-ePeAktZXE4YkxpNmhmWUk
The photos have not been edited in any way, other than to rename the files. I will leave the photos up for a couple of weeks. If you are reading this post after November 2015, and would like a link to the pics, please send me a PM.
Conclusion
OIS definitely helped with the low-light pics. The difference in detail was due to blurring, not MPs as far I could tell. In better lighting conditions or when stabilized, the Z5 and G4 had the same level of detail. The G4 pics became more and more "washed out" as the light level dropped, which was probably due to its smaller sensor.
Kids vs. stills: For quick snaps of people in moderate-to-low lighting, the Z5 was better, due to face detection. OIS couldn't do much to help. G4 had a lot more blurred photos, but when it wasn't blurred, the quality was good.
So why choose the Z5 (without OIS)? For the video recording. Once you've tried taking FHD videos with the Z5, you'll probably never go back to using OIS. Try it in the store... take a walk, jump up and down, shake it all around. It's pretty dang amazing.
Anyway, I hope the pics and the comparison were helpful.
Cheers!

Yeah, I noticed the G4's pics got darker rather quickly as the lights went down. Didn't think anyone was interested to see washed out Z5 pics vs. pitch-black G4 pics! xD But I think we need to really test the Z5 outdoors at night with a tripod and see what it's capable of. Anyone live in a big city with a good night life? Tim?
BTW, anyone see these night pics from Zoë Noble?

At the very extreme end, Xperia outputs will wash out. But couple stops before that Xperia will get you a usable output while the others will still remain pitch-black. Try it out when you get a chance.
I will do it (without a tripod - you kidding right). I live downtown & I got tired of taking night shots long time ago. Next weekend - hopefully.

I see. Thanks!
Here is my indoor(metro) and night shot(outdoor) campaign of S6 vs. Z5c. All are shared in it's original size without editing other than renaming.
S6:
FHD - Software stabilization disabled, OIS enabled(can't be disable)
UHD - OIS enabled(can't be disable)
Z5c:
FHD - IA software stabilization on
UHD - Standard steadyshot on
All photo and video were shot by stock camera handheld. Sony only allowed to pack ISO in 8MP Manual so all are in 8MP from 100iso to 3200iso, skipped testing 50iso bcoz 100iso already super easy to create handshake. S6 were all from Pro mode(standard auto mode can't select ISO) range from 100iso to 800iso, max is 800 from Samsung offered, can't go higher in Pro mode though sometimes the auto mode could boost up to 1000ISO.
Some photo got little handshake and I've no time to just keep repeat shooting. In my experiences, S6 easily beats Z5c in terms of handshake and focus performance(at very low light S6 focus is superior, more faster and accurate). Indeed, many photo from Z5c been shot for a couple of times to try to get best result and almost all S6 photo were just taken in one shot(no more than two).
S6 got very good quality of video as well as photo, I think the OIS is quite helpful for the video part too. I'll probably add Z5c/S6 fast walking video today or tomorrow when I've free time to do more testing.

Z5c link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4Nx7PgyQVgJYjdOcEJPUHJORjQ&usp=sharing
My Z5c is bootloader locked with DRM key so it's still with the low-light denoise algorithm. I may unlock it soon. My S6 with ISOCell, not Sony IMX240 sensor.

Thanks for this! I'm sure many appreciate the efforts
Though I'm not sure if its just me, but honestly, I prefer the pics from the Z5. For me, the colors / the overall photo itself looks "natural" or more "realistic". Of course, I do not know the actual colors / conditions of what it really looked like but the colors of the S6 seem to be too artificial (and more orangey / redder tint to most of them).
Just my 2 cents though.

You'll need to download all stuffs and check it out on a big PC screen. S6 color can be more better because the default is over. I always preset lower one stepping of saturation and color temp in Pro mode but this time I just let it run default so the result got worse.
If you check the threads on this board, I've said it a dozen times that Sony got better color(my taste) and that is why I buy the Z5c while I already own a S6. In fact, S6 is over whilst Z5c color is also a bit off(under/lower) but just more close to the real scene.
Speaking to the details part, S6 just win hands down without any doubt.

The histogram shows the Z5 is more accurate. Viewed a couple of the photos and resizing the S6 photos to match the res and aspect ratio of the Z5c (2448x3264) show the Z5c often delivers more detail but also a bit more 'fine' grain vs blurrier and noiser (noise blurred out but still visible as blotches) S6 photos (depending on ISO level). Also several photos have a photo (PhotoME exif reader) time date with a difference of 15-20 minutes between each camera and same shooting location..
Here is a crop from both at 2448x3264 and with aspect ratio correction. This is from the S6/Z5 ISO 800 comparision. Top is S6, bottom is Z5c. Photo crops from HKs comparision.

Excuse me Sir. Do you actually know what are you speaking? You always blame S6 got strong noise reduction but when you found noises there you also said that S6 is too bad to has noise.
Sony is all good in your mind even there are indeed more flat area in photo but you'll just think that some noises to simulate fine grain so it's all good.....
To be honest, I've also played a lots of video stuffs, I was a video lover. The film grain isn't real using in this way. In the old days video encoding technologies were not yet mature, the encoder did remove too much things from the source and people was trying to apply some noises in flat area to fraud human eye but this method should not use again in recent year. Some others were trying to simulate old Film noises for special purpose though.
The environment is total stable and it won't change the result after 15 - 20mins like day time so it is meaningless to mention about this, I'm not only focusing to take photo because my friends whatsapp me. Furthermore, the Z5c is freaking hard to get good result in such low light condition, some scenes were actually been taken 4 to 5 times to try to get one with good result. S6 was almost all done in one shot.

While an instructive and very interesting comparison, we do loose a bit of something by dealing with differing Fields of View. Some of the loss of detailing that you might otherwise put down to the sensor or software is actually far more about the focus of the lens on the sensor. To see what the detail reproduction is more accurately, we could do with seeing the two framed identically (IE, taking half a step nearer with the Z5 when taking the shot to correct for the different lens).
While I hate to put you to more trouble, could you have a go at this at all? Thanks

Ah, Hong Kong... been there several times. Sorry, but I hate to say it, the video quality on the S6 was not very good. Maybe when standing still it's good, but as soon as you started panning, the video was jittery. In FHD, the Z5 was completely smooth. In 4K, both videos were jittery.
If you're going to critical of the Z5, you should be at least as critical about the S6's poor video performance. You live in HK... a fast paced city. Hold it up and walk around with the crowd, take it on the bus, go up and down the subways stairs. Don't use the Z5 and take video like it's an S6 - judge it on its own merit. If you've ever tried to keep up with a child and record video, you'd know what I mean!
Thanks for the vids and photos... I'll check out the photos later.

Okay, I've gone through the pics, comparing both sets of pics side-by-side. First thing I noted was that a few of the Z5 pics were actually less blurry than the S6. LOL! I think I could have done better with the G4.
At 100% size, the Z5 and S6 had nearly the same level of detail across the pics, except for a few pics where either the S6 or Z5 was clearly blurred. The Z5 had smaller text because of the FOV, but it wasn't any harder to read.
I thought the S6 would be the clear winner with OIS, but the pics look very close in quality. Z5 should have slightly better colours, but I can't tell without neutral reference pics. I think you should have spent more time stabilizing the S6. From your pics and video, I'd choose the Z5, since the only thing that's clearly better from the two sets was the Z5's FHD video. xD
Now that I've had the Z5 for a couple of weeks, here are my thoughts:
Here on XDA, we tend to get overly technical (no, really?), so I've been thinking about how a "normal" person would decide to get and use the Z5. I bought the Z5 based on early impressions of its video performance and technical details of the new camera system (dat closed-loop actuator). After taking some family vids running around the house, I'd say it works as advertised.
But it was my SO's reaction (a non-geek) that was more telling. She was curious how the videos would turn out, as I barely paid attention to the phone while it was taking videos. She was impressed and commented that it was so smooth that it looked "professional". As any family man knows, having the "other half" onboard with a tech purchase means life is good! Heh!
The photo quality? Frankly, she didn't notice much difference between the Z5, G4 or even my old Z Ultra. The G4's OIS didn't help much for impromptu pics of people. I had plenty of blurred indoor shots of moving faces with each phone. The Z5 did try harder with face detection and scene selection to get good pics, while the G4 was basically a straight dummy point-and-shoot. The G4's strength is in its manual mode, and in quick snap situations, there was no time to play with the settings. Ironically, I caught some of the best moments - not talking about colour or details - from the Z Ultra, as it was the camera I was most familiar with. LOL!
The Z5 is now my go-to camera for videos. I think anyone who wants to take good family or vacation videos (or even vloggers), the Z5 is probably the best choice for a phone. Personally, I'd still take a real camera on vacations for better pics and optical zoom. Gawd, nothing is more annoying than taking a pic of something and have it show up the size of a pinhead because I couldn't zoom in.
Fulfilling half of my pledge. Other phone died & bartender didn't serve me tripod or OIS this evening. So SA w/o tripod all the way.

Good shots and a good example piece that demonstrates that you can get very good night shots from the Z5. I especially like the carriage.
As is my way, I've been looking through Flickr at S6 shots that random people have posted and have come across images like https://flic.kr/p/A14UVf and https://flic.kr/p/ytEfJq - both of which are noisier than a great many night shots and indoors night shots I've taken with my Z5. These are not isolated examples.
Not very scientific, I know, but it's evidence that getting good results is as much about the person behind the camera as it is about the camera itself. Those S6 shots aren't really any better than anything that the Z5 could produce: detail is relatively similar (though a little better with the S6, probably) and noise is higher. Compare that bar shot with one of mine in MUCH worse lighting (so much darker than the image produced): https://flic.kr/p/AHaxNj . Sure, the detail is smudgy but it is there and there is far less noise, to boot. Not saying that my image is perfect - anything but - but seeing the S6 bar shot above (Full of very ugly noise in an environment with many more light sources) makes me wonder just how much better the S6 would've handled that scene, if at all.
Some of my initial comparative shots.
Just my first day with Z5, and the shots are in difficult conditions sometimes, on purpose.
The Zoom is ok considering it was bad lighting.

Hi!
I bought Lg G4 very much for its camera, but my Nexus 6 still takes better pictures...........
First pic is from g4 and second is from Nexus 6. G4 is picking up sunlight and making pictures to bright......very dissapointed.
They look about the same to me. Try some different shots I guess.
I am quite impressed with G4 camera, beats the S6 edge and Priv we have.

You can see the sunbeam on the back of the chair on the G4.
Here is two other examples. First one from Nexus 6, second one from G4. Nexus 6 pic is much more vivid and clear, LG G4 is to bright and catches all sunlight on the picture,
Ohh yah I see it there. Have you tried dark shots with out sun light.
I don't have a Nexus 6 to compare but I do wonder if maybe you got a bad camera on a G4 (if that is possible).
Are you on the latest version too, M?
It may make a difference where you touch to focus too.

This is just different focus points. G4 has laser focus and probably focuses on another area. Indoor pictures are crap anyway especially when shot against bright windows.

Yes i am on Marshmallow. Still picks up every sunbeam there is, doesent matter where I focus. Here is another example. The sunbeam looks like a white mark across the picture, my Nexus 6 does not pick up that at all
see if this help:
clean the camera lens, then take a shot;
i have my G4 for 3 weeks and i love photography ! i have photos that make me say WT...lolololol

all in manual mode
You have full manual controls with RAW capability. Regardless of how auto works, tweaking manual settings will produce far better shots than the Nexus 6 would ever be capable of producing.
Now for the helpful less "fan boy sounding" response: LG tend to blow out highlights in the background to produce a proper exposure for the main subject.
Even the G5 looks like this will be the case, as sampled here
Personally, I think Samsung nailed the auto camera experience with the S6 generation phones. LG have more capability, but it's lessened by the fact most users are not photographers.
Kind of looking forward to the S7 for this reason, it brings back all the features I couldn't tolerate losing with the S6 and enhances the camera even more.
To fix your problem (particularly in environments like your photos)
Turn the brightness up to about 80% with auto brightness disabled
Switch to manual in the camera
Keep everything auto, but fiddle with ISO and exposure time.
Keep the ISO as low as possible while making sure you can take a photo without motion blur from hand shakes (1/30 is as slow as I go usually)
When it looks right on screen, take the shot.
If in doubt and you're feeling technogically empowered, enable RAW.
Happy snapping
Your shooting scene is a difficult one. Play with Manual. The G4 camera is plain excellent. Ecstatic even.
If you want to record a video you are doomed, no manual mode there. Enjoy massive overexposure and over saturated colors. And the retarded ois of course...

I went through my gallery to check indoor pictures. Definitely a faulty unit/optics/glass you have there, did not notice the same effect here.
Maybe you (OP) are looking at it from a wrong angle. I think the G4 camera just records what is sees. It's not its fault that there are sun rays. On the other hand, the N6 doesn't capture what there really is. Besides, the net is full of tutorials how to catch sunbeams. With G4 you get it out of the box.
This must be a problem with dirt on the lens or the protective glass, nothing to do with the camera, the camera is awesome. Could even be on the inside so it might be hard to remove without disassembling the phone.

Yep, looks to me like the lens had a smear or something on it.
I have 505 serial dual h818N. Having a vignette effect when on 60 fps mode. Some users reported that they have no issue like mine. Ois is terrible on my device IMHO.

I just own the G4 and I have to say hat video quality exposure and all that stuff its the best. maybe you need to learn a bit on how to use a proper camera.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the LG G7 ThinQ come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I find the auto focus to be very bad on the G7. Manually focus via focus peaking solves the issue for me.

Agreed! I had the opportunity to take pictures and videos and this camera is quasi trash. Does everything ok. Does nothing really well. The AI struggles. I hope an upgrade makes the camera better. I came from an s9 plus too and this camera doesn't compare.

Have you tried the manual mode?
I've tried manual mode and it is capable but it's still not in the same league as the S9+.
The wide angle mode is nice but it's not high quality even in full daylight.
And why no 4K60 mode?
With a 16MP sensor I figured this device would produce best images yet particularly in manual mode.
There's a lot of lag/delay when using the camera as well.
I long for the day when we have a 16MP F 1.2 camera! It will be here...eventually!

No update available for unlocked users.
it would be so freaking awesome if people would actually help the community and upload some real-life photos made with their g7s, instead of complaining about this and that. my two cents, as a future buyer of the phone
sorry
Well, I contribute to the topic of the forum.
(by curiosities of fate, at the end of this article I just got the first update of the phone, which touches certain aspects of the phone, so you have to repeat tests, but for those who take it out of the box is a good reference).
Let's be clear, the photographic quality of the LG G7's automatic mode is bad, especially when approaching 100% of the size of the photo, the final finish is like a watercolor filter, little detail, and somewhat dark colors.
Let's illustrate with the following image:
(the images have been cut to 35% of the original size, I hope you can appreciate the differences. I am not a professional of the field, nor a photographer but here we go!)
This is the default image of the LG g7 in automatic mode, JPG format, the colors seem unnatural to me.
How can this be resolved? taking pictures in manual mode and in RAW format, the difference is very noticeable.
The image gains a lot in detail, but loses in color representation, does anyone know why the images are faded in RAW?, with some patience and retouched in photoshop the values of saturation and vibrance have something very similar to what I was seeing at that moment, although I understand that this is very subjective, ideally the phone would place these colors from the beginning that we selected the RAW format.
Finally, mention the differences in detail between the automatic format and the RAW format, the image on the left is in automatic JPG mode and the one on the right is in RAW, that gain in detail has a cost, the photo has a brutal weight in Size, around 30-45mb per photo.
I hope the comparison works for something and for someone, please excuse my bad English and greetings from Mexico.

it would be so freaking awesome if people would actually help the community and upload some real-life photos made with their g7s, instead of complaining about this and that. my two cents, as a future buyer of the phone

I think you're completely right.
These are some pics I took so far, most of them with stock camera (only the last two should have been taken with GCam). Most of them shot in auto mode and there are no post production works. I'm not a photographer at all and I don't pretend to be one, but I'm pretty satisfied with G7's cameras.
Bad resolution is due to upload, I can upload pics somewhere else if needed.

don't buy this phone for the camera. it has plenty of outstanding features, but the camera isn't one of them. it's "good enough", but not up to par with other flagships.
s7, s8, s9, iphone X, mate 10 all take better pics. it does better with low light than previous LGs, but very unremarkable. the GCam port is helping a lot. once it's really up and going we will see what this hardware can do. LG just can't seem to get the software side right.
i'm not bashing it, as i knew this before i bought the phone and the camera isn't very important to me.

definitely notice a difference on those last two! they look great. colors feel true to life.
Is it possible to add the wide angle mode in the GCam?
My g6 get is a bit 'grainy' but detail and dynamic range for a 13mp is at times better than the g7 that are verry low at detail in some shots and some get to punchy that loose natural scene color. Open and switch between camera's is way faster on g6 than the g7 to. And allot of extra features 'pop out-gallery scroll left side-tracking focus etc are missing. Hope they improve fast with a update.

G6 left was double the distance taken than g7. Clear detail
