Nexus 7 DOA - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got my shipment of the Nexus 7 today and it's well, not working.
Unboxed it, tried to turn it on and I had to hold it down for a while, then Google came up, then Nexus flashed, then shuts off. Won't go further to start up, etc.
I plugged it in, nothing. Doesn't even note that it's charging. Nothing works. I can hold power and volume to go to recovery mode but that fails.
What can I do? It's a C70 model also.

Let it charge for about 30 minutes. Hold the power button down until the Google comes up then release the power button. After the screen goes black take a flashlight and shine on the screen and see if you can see the start up.
Sometimes the brightness control is stuck out of the box. Once you can see what your doing, you can access the settings and adjust the brightness.

That worked! WOW Thank you!
I was so bummed, first tablet, and thought, shoot, it's dead....I was messing with it trying to get it to work. I can't thank you enough.
I haven't noticed anything else that I've seen though. No screen seperation, etc.

Aren't these forums great???
You need to remember that because I'm sure you will see that problem posted again!! Then you can answer it and feel good about helping someone!

I've just come across a problem with the brightness. It's not high at all when full setting, and when i put it down to about 30%, it completely goes black, then have to go back up.
Any solutions?

Return it. You have a bad device in my opinion

I don't remember much about the factory settings, but there should be something in there about factory reset or factory restore.....try that.

What?
You got into the Download mode....
That is used to flash with ODIN3.
If you are not using it to flash your device right now, you may Sir. turn off your device and boot it up again, or even remove the battery.
If you are flashing you should see by now a green bar growing on your screen. Do no turn off your phone by this time!
thanks guys...i just held the power button for 10 seconds, its ok (i was sort of scared that i might brick the phone if i pull the battery). Wow...this forum is awesome, I got responses almost instantly! Thanks
you sure it's green?
the last time i flashed mine was a purple download line going across the screen
ahh never mind, you were talking about the Odin3 side.

No Sir.! I was actually talking about the bar which grows on our device screens, you sure it is Purple?
I was really convinced it was green, damn me
both times i loaded a new ROM it was purple going across the screen
either it's my eyes having colour problem, or you are, or maybe each devices really picks a colour at random
LOL

Haha.
I will have a better look at it next time
mine was green......maybe its just how the phone is feeling at the moment?? haha
If it doesnot have the 3 button recovery, the white "samsung i9000m" splash screen will keep cycling over and over... when that happens do we do the same thing (remove battery or power off)?
I want to test a unit at a bell store before buying but dont want to "break" it.
If you are not in the process of flashing, a battery pull would do.

lol, I must say I'm surprised about how gentle the replies are... And the fact there are already 12 of them (half of them being about the color of the status bar )

[Q] Tab is dead?

I wasn't doing anything special with my Tab, just browsing some sites, put it away for maybe an hour, then brought it out. Hit the power button on the side and... nothing.
I held it, thinking maybe it turned off. I also charged it for a while, thinking maybe the battery turned off.
Nada.
Anyone experience something like this and have a fix?
Thanks in advance.
try a long press on the power button.. maybe 10 secs... it might have frozen on the last software and that will turn it completely off. let me know if it works.
nvm... as soon as i finished typing this, the damn thing roared back to life..
mod, please delete~!

That has happened to me 2 or 3 times during the past one month. I guess it is a feature (!) of the Tab

I/O Edition Won't Power On

Hi Guys,
I recently moved and just took my I/O edition Tab 10.1 out to play with but it won't power on, won't charge, won't do anything. Any ideas?????
I had updated it to 3.1 and it sat for approx. 1 month without use. I plugged it in to the AC Adapter and left it for about 5hrs, came back and still nothing.
Help will be greatly appreciated.
Jeff
Best bet is to call the Samsung number on the back if the tab above the serial number. They were really cool and even sent a prepaid postage I just had to provide a box to ship it in.

someone i know went through this recently (was retail).
do this:
hold power + both vol buttons for 30+ seconds.
now see if it will turn on.
Pershoot is a genius.. But, if that doesn't work, try this thread out for size. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130574
If that sdoesn't work odin the european touchwix rom located in the developers section.. I was stuck on bootloader and that did it for me.. Good luck man... I know I felt like **** when I thought I had no hope...

It is not good for a device to leave it unused for a month. The battery might be dead for good. Best practice is to leave the battery charged at 50%. This is what I read.... I am not an expert, and and I hope that this is not your case.

Update:
No go on anything. The unit will not power on and is not recognized by the computer.
Any other suggestions? I don't want to have to send it in.
Damn homie, if that thread didn't work for you I'm out of ideas.. I'm sorry. Looks like you are going to have to contact samsung..

Place two finger tips on the glass and hold the power button until it turns on. This happened to me a few times on my retail tab 10.1. It works for me everytime.
Did you try holding the power button down for an inordinately long time? I started panicking this morning when my tab wouldn't turn on and so I held the power button down for maybe like a minute then it decided to turn back on.

Focus randomly turns off! HELP

I'll be using my Samsung Focus and all of a sudden, I'll see "slide down to power off" I slide up (of course) but the phone shuts off a few seconds later. When I try to turn it back on, the white SAMSUNG shows up for a few seconds then shuts back off then back on. It takes a few tries for me to actually get the phone on and working, but it always shuts down eventually. If anyone has experienced this problem and fixed it please let me know! I'm leaving for college very soon and need to get this fixed. Thanks!!!

We need more details about the phone:
HW Revision (1.3/1/4)
ROM: stock/custom
OS version
What you're describing is symptom of power button being continuously pressed. You might need to clean it or change it.
I have the latest update on the phone and it is stock. How would I go about cleaning the power button or changing it?

I don't know of any specific video for repairing the power button, unfortunately.
However, here is a thread on repairing the screen, which gives you an idea how to open the phone. Keep in mind that if you do open it, you lose your warranty so if you want to keep it, don't open it.
Here and here are other 2 videos on opening the Focus, hope this helps.
I will watch those videos and see if I can learn anything from it. I might just have to get a new phone Thanks for the help!
Blah
I have the same problem, and it seems related to the battery life going really low. im ordering a new Battery, tell me if anything improves with yours.
Id like to report that getting a new battery has completely resolved this problem, even at low charges.

Switching off power?

Is it bad to switch off the box by pulling the power supply? What can happen?
I think the file system is flashfs, does it need to be shut down?

Its meant to stay on 24/7 but if you do want to unplug the power the best way is to shut down first. Just to make sure it isn't writing data at the time. You shut down by selecting the power menu at the bottom of the lean back launcher on the stock ROM. Then select power off and let it power off.

I have had some situations where I have had to unplug it, but the big problem I have is getting it to start. Some times, it will start by pressing the start button on the unit. Other times, nothing happens or the start screen will come up and then nothing, or it will move to the animated start up screen and it will hang there. Is anyone else having these issues and if so, what have you done?
