I bought Horn a while ago and the game wouldn't load up on my Note 10.1

I've been wondering whether I should try SkPro since I already have SKMobile. But, for 25c, kind of a no-brainer! Thanks for the heads up!

Sketchbook Pro
Well, it's too bad I bought it yesterday for $5... Oh well, they make a good app and I am happy to support good developers.

ARGH. I paid full price for this just a week or so ago..
Oh well, it's not exactly *expensive* even at full price.
I just wish they'd add a lasso feature.

I agree the lasso feature would be nice.

Folks, is there some functionality in Sketchbook pro that's not available on Photoshop touch preinstalled on Note 10.1?
I am not a pro, as you can figure out on sketching... but i was able to do sketch usinf PS touch.
Appreciate quick response, so that I can grab the sketchbook pro on a 25 cent sale, in case it's much superior to PS touch as per sketching experts here.

For 25c, hell yeah! What are you waiting for? PS Touch and SBP are almost two different apps. PS Touch sucks (really sucks) for sketching IMO. SBP, on the other hand has all the tools you need to sketch and even present full-fledged completed drawings if you take your time. The only gripes I have on SBP are the following:
1. Only 6 layers
2. No layer transformation on the go. No group transformation available either.
3. No palm rejection, but with WACOM it's not a big deal.
4. No Custom Pens, but there is a crap load of them already included so you can survive
5. No Portrait mode, the GUI is always on landscape mode
6. No custom canvas size; 1280 x 800 is the best you (and only size) you can work with.
But as I said, it's only a quarter. So, put the beggar bum down the street on hold today and buy the app before it's too late. You should only have a few more hrs of sale available on this app.

Galaxy Note 10.1 vs Win8 tablets with pen input

I'm waiting for Surface Pro or similar because it's the way to have an ultra book and a Note 10.1 with windows in the same package, but what do you think guys? I I mean, it's a good option or should I buy the Note and then a new ultra book with Win 8? I don't know which option is better, and also I don't know exactly the price of every option

It's likely that the Surface Pro will be in the neighborhood of $1000, or at least priced around the same as an ultrabook. Also, to be honest I don't think it's that likely that Windows 8 will succeed in getting a lot of touchscreen friendly apps but with Android you already have that (but it's debatable whether there are enough tablet optimized apps). Windows tablets are fairly nice for handwriting but I imagine everything else would be a pain. Of course, my last experience with a Windows tablet was one that would be 4 years old if it hadn't died catastrophically after just under 2 years, so maybe the Surface Pro will be great and Windows 8 will have a lot of touch optimized apps but I doubt it. Also you're almost certainly going to get a thinner body and better battery life with the Note than the Surface Pro. I considered the Surface Pro for a bit too but after learning that it'll be priced like an Ultrabook I decided the Note 10.1 was for me. The most important part of a PC is the keyboard IMO, I don't really see the advantage of having a tablet that runs Windows when we have a capable mobile OS with a vibrant app ecosystem already.
Edit: I figure though that if Surface Pro is amazing and the Note underwhelms, worst case I'll sell my Note 10.1 for a bit of a loss and get that instead, but I just don't think there's any reason to have a compromise device that has a Core i5 but needs to be light and thin and last long. Anything that needs a Core i5 is going to need a proper keyboard/mouse/work environment anyway.

I have the Samsung Series 7 Slate with Win8 on it as well as the Note. Two different devices with two different uses. The Note is for apps, watching media, playing games and such while the Slate is for doing work. The slate with apps could do both but not yet as there are not enough apps for those things I use the note for yet. The slate is a notebook replacement which the Note is not.
The slate has a touchscreen with a wacom digitizer and pen, core i5, ssd and is very fast. But it's heavy in comparison and the optional Bluetooth keyboard you have to lug around though it's small. Plus it starts around $1300 plus.
So at this time I have and use both and don't see either replacing the other soon.

Everything about this post is wrong.
1. Surface Pro is unlikely to be $1000+. The anticipated price range is 600-700. But for now we don't know.
2. Windows 8 will have a slew of touch capable and touch friendly apps coming out at launch, and by Jan 2013 (the release date for Surface Pro) will have just about everything covered.
3. The UX for Win8 is really really good. Today I was watching some videos in bed before getting out with my Note 10.1. I found it stupid that I couldn't swipe from the left to change apps and swipe from the right to get search. The split keyboard on the Note is really nice for these situations but the position of the app switcher button, the home button etc are very uncomfortable to use when using both hands.
BUT even if all these points were not present and infact were bad for Win 8:
4. The biggest feature of the Surface Pro over Note 10.1 is OneNote. There is nothing comparable on any platform. I love my note 10.1 (I have two!) but nothing compares to the handwriting support for OneNote. I can write on the page and easily convert it to text. I can take a fully handwritten page and convert that to text with minimal hassle. S-Note is a nice app but handwriting support is really far behind.
When Surface Pro is out, Note 10.1 like devices will have no chance in competing even with much (or slightly) lower price.
Which is not to say that the Note isn't incredible. It really really is. I love it. But OneNote alone changes the game.

For this feature there is an excellent app called 7 notes on Google play, you can hand write your notes within the dedicated app and convert them to text later on. Text can also be formatted although limited however the handwriting recognition is really excellent. One note no doubt is the industry standard however there are alternatives that get the job done.
The handwriting panel can also be used for text entry of required on any app however, if used outside of the dedicated app, it will convert your handwriting to text on the fly.

MS Office apps. Yes you can use Polaris or whatever on the tablet. Remote desktop onto office desktops using corporate RDP. Visual Studio .Net. Engineering design tools. Of course many aren't available for Win8 yet so some of what I'm talking about were for win7 before I upgraded to 8.
I'd suggest using the Note provided the apps you want run there. If they don't and you do have some other wintel box then you can run those apps from the note using something like spashtop remote.

QQ I bought the app and it doesn't let you write on the screen. The thing I wanted was for writing on the notes and later process the strokes to text. Oh well, the keyboard (Mazec) is pretty nice with the auto scroll. Worth the $1.
for me the text recognition is very great
I write everything with it and don't use the keyboard any more
with some settings its even more great for me (check them out in the keyboard settings)

You can do the above, I do it all the time. Use the dedicated app and Keep your stylus on the Mazec Menu Icon on the bottom left and a pop up will allow you to use stroke mode, the handwriting input panel will change colour. Now when you write, the notes will be in your handwriting, to convert them to text later, longPress on any part of the handwritten text until a menu pops up and pick convert.

Yeah I figured that out but I was hoping to get free form writing on the note itself. The samsung keyboard also have such a panel though I think that Mazec one might be a bit easier to use (though it has more trouble recognizing my handwriting).
Incidentally if there anyway to change where the autocomplete suggestions appear? As I am left handed its impossible to see the suggestions as I write. Iff I could move them to the bottom of the keyboard instead of the top that would be a big big benefit.
If the W8 tablets have capacitive displays they''ll suffer the same issues all tablets before them suffered (regardless of OS). What separates the Note (s) is their inductive displays and all that goes along with that. If they do have inductive displays it all comes down to who implements the s/w better. I think you guys are expecting way too much from W8 V1. It took Android until V4 to become passable. Debating the theory of W8 tablets is fun. A lot can happen on the road from theory to practice. I for one want to understand why some of the biggest name OEM's are shunning RT. It's more than just price and competing with MS in h/w which shouldn't be difficult.
Well I was talking of the Pro version which already has great pen apps like One note or zenbrush, photoshop, etc

as I know the Note has capazitiv and a induktiv layer! Capazitiv is for your finger and induktiv for the pen
And the Win 8 tablets with pen would have the same
Gesendet von meinem GT-N8000 mit Tapatalk 2
You really can't compare the two because the Surface Pro will probably be ~2x more expensive, apps probably much more expensive like they are now, it'll be hotter running, with shorter battery life, bulkier and heavier. The Surface Pro won't be much different than installing Windows 8 on my Thinkpad. I bought the Galaxy Note 10.1 instead because I like competition and want to see ARM devices grow more powerful as a desktop and laptop alternative with superior power efficiency and lower cost.
Well of you read the first post, I was asking between a Note 10.1 plus an ultra book or a new windows 8 convertible with both capacitive and digitalizer layers, to be able to use a Wacom style pen, my fingers and the Keyboard, and all of this to take notes plus Engineering programs like Ansys or Catia

I don't think there's enough info available on W8 tablets (Pro or RT) at this point to have anything but a theoretical conversation. The HP TouchPad with webOS was a great product killed by a lack of an eco-system. What's going to be any different, especially on the consumption side, with W8? Pro's not due out until years end and RT will be the launch pproduct. I can't see it doing what you guys are hoping for at the price points being discussed. The success or failure of W8 tables will take months to determine. The biggest differentiator is MS Office support but that's not a motivator for a lot of people or iPad wouldn't be as successful as it is. With consumption being the number one use for a tablet ,being as late as it is, W8 has a tough road to hoe.
Like Barry said, until we know price points, there's really nothing to discuss. Rumor has it RT will debut at $200, which seems too unlikely to be true, but in order to make a dent in the market, Microsoft is gonna have to do something spectacular like that. And if they can gain market share, third party developers will develop for it. I also am looking forward to the Pro tablets, but I seriously doubt they'll be as affordable as the Note. I've been reading they could be $600-800, but I really don't think there's any way they could be cheaper than an ultrabook. The relatively cheaper price point is what drove me to the Note, and unless the W8 Pro tablets are affordable and/or blow everyone away, I can't see myself getting one over the Note.

How Productive?

Are you when using your Note 10.1?
Alot of times i feel i fall behind others while trying to 'setup' my Note for intake(i dont know how people type so fast on an iPad). in class, getting slides or document with s-note side by side, i see people faster with just printouts. This is compounded when the prof. switches between multiple documents/slidedecks.
the same goes for meetings. I often find im trying to format and i miss half of what was actually said.
It may be the fact im not really great at taking notes anyway, but i still feel after a month of use, the experience is uncomfortable and is often subtraction by addition. I never was productive with my iPad either, but i see people typing very quickly with theirs. I just would study powerpoints on it.
My Note 1 same thing. A big post-it pad work much more effectively when walking up to a coworker. Maybe its the looking down/at a screen effect.
Maybe someone can come up with a training course/regime to help people like me to be more productive. i mean, thats what i bought it for.
I use my Note for everything (Love this device). Most importantly, I use it in all of my engineering classes. So, I'd have to say that I'm turbo-productive.
Same here. By the time I could dig a pen and pad out, my Note and stylus are already rockin. I do nearly everything on it and feel resentful if I have to use my laptop for anything.
I think i spend too much time looking at the screen/making sure my words are being converted correctly(im not a great speller).
Any tips?
Do handwritten notes. That's the best way. I as use sugarsync so I can have all my scanned class handouts accessible even when my computer isn't on. It also autosyncs so I don't have to so much. I also have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard but I have yet to use them. I have only used one piece of paper since school started. The note's advantage over iPad is its pen. If you don't use it why did you buy a Note 10.1? For a typing tablet the Transformer Prime Infinity would have been the tablet to get.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk 2
I am constantly reaching for the Undo button when Im not using my Note. I do my physics labs on lecture notes, my calculus notes as well, and my french homework. I find that the only thing missing is a full Microsoft Word (next year?) but Office suite suffices. I also have to convert my Physics teacher's power points using MS as I haven't found an app that can do it without messing up the slides so the only way to do it is before class. All my teachers' presentations are available online so that helps with being prepared.

I second using handwritten notes vs written-to-type or even typed notes, unless you connect a physical keyboard.
My only other issue is how with my writing style s-notes still zooms in from time to time with my palm

Have you tried to zoom on a new note with your fingers while in pen mode but with the pen unlocked? For me this gets rid of the red box and then I lock the pen and no more zoom.

It usually does a great job (this iswritten)|but things like Commas awt the letter 1(See) often meet to be written over. I guess I should just edit mistakes After, using another program negates the uses of multi side by side.

Is there a way to Minimize a app that is in multiwindow? Sometimes I want the S-note to go to full screen, and not close the other app completely.

I was the first official US purchase. I have tons of meetings with banks and work and in class two times a week.
A tutorial / training program might help some of us improve our skills.
I did just do my HW by cropping the questions from a PDF scan of textbook and posting into s-Note side by side. I just feel when time is tight I seem to need to pay more attention to what the device is doing. Alot of re - writing words.
Thanks anyway all.

I use my note to watch YouTube and browse the net, used the s-pen twice with s-note and ps touch. Basically have no use for the s-pen at the moment. Wouldn't replace the note for any other tablet luvin it.

Comparisons to Wacom tablet

Hi there I'm thinking of getting a galaxy note 10.1 to maybe enhance my digital art, can't afford to buy a critiq as it's way more than I can afford and when I saw this tablet I just knew I wanted one.
I'm used to using a Wacom tablet but it has to be connected to my laptop and a tablet seems like a great way to do paintings outside without the hassle of bringing an extra laptop.
How would you compare it to a Wacom and is it as easy to use and is the pressure sensitive pen as good as the pens that come with Wacom tablets.
I've seen reviews about the galaxy 10.1 but they were by phone and tablet reviewers that didn't really do any art and just talked about the specifications and benchmarks and the hardware.
I was either thinking of getting this tablet and having to save more to buy it or buy a cheaper tablet and get a dagi stylus.
What are your views?

This is a tech forum, not artistic and there is information in the forum if youlook...
The wacom pens work on the note 10.1 and it has a wacom digitiser. I have had no problems and find the pen quite good with different levels of pressure sensitivity, but I'm no artist...
There have been mixed reviews and threads about problems with the s-pen but I can't say I have had any. The best bet would be to go to a store and try it out... Just remember that the store demo's are used and abused by the public so allow for that...

It is the general forum and you can ask talk about anything you want but that doesn't mean people will answer... As I said, I'm no artist, I have a 2 year old nephew that can draw stick figures better than me :silly:, but people don't always have the time or inclination to answer all the time....

I did the same thing, transitioned from a wacom tablet/desktop set up to the note 10.1 it's really amazing and has got me drawing all the time again!!!! It's easy to sketch even in broad daylight and the battery lasts about 10 hours. This also was a compromise for the cintiq...which I also can't afford, I'm glad I did it.

Wow cool I like your work, very original.
Hopefully when I get the 10.1 it will inspire me and motivate me to do more and maybe one day make some money from it as there are sites where people buy original digital art.
It will also give me the freedom to take it anywhere and just sketch if I want to and maybe post a few of my paintings there

I have an Intuos 3 on my PC at home. I haven't used it extensively (my dad passed it on to me), but I have used it here and there.
Having just gotten my Note 10.1, I can say it's basically the exact same feel and functionality. The difference being that (like the Cintiq) you're drawing right on the screen - which I find much easier.
Cool can't wait to get mine as I've been wanting a good tablet, I've only got the Wacom cth-460 bamboo pen and touch.
It's okay but want to do more

I've been waffling over getting a tablet for a while now. But when I read about the functionality of the Note 10.1 I was sold. Part of the reason I don't use my Intuos very often is because I have a hard time with the disconnect between looking at the screen on my desk while drawing on the tablet on my lap (or keyboard tray). Even with the cursor displaying where my stylus is, I find it hard to draw.
Interestingly I've never had issues with using a mouse, nor keyboard, and I'm an avid PC gamer. Just something about drawing with a stylus that doesn't work for me on a typical PC setup.
On the Note 10.1, it's like drawing on paper (as far as the brain-to-hand connection goes).

Same here, you have to have pretty good hand to eye coordinating to even produce anything on a wacom tablet and it takes some getting used to.
I like the idea of the 10.1 as it's like painting without the hassle of buying paints and canvas plus the resson I love digital art the most is I'm colour blind and found tablets easier to paint with.

Strange, my drawing and painting studio core made us learn to divorce the hand from the eye... "If you're not looking at your model, then you're making it up." was what I always learned... I figured that's why wacom went ahead with screen-less tablets, they figured artists could handle it. =D

LOL. Makes sense. I just never took an art class (beyond grade 10). Kind of funny now that I think about it, having worked as a graphic designer for 9 years.
I think the main compromise going between my Intuos and Note 10.1 is not hardware related, but software. There isn't any software that I know of in Android that can easily handle a large PSD file along with my various adjustment layers. But, for those projects, I shrink or flatten a copy before I work on it on the tablet. Aside from that, the only thing it seems to be missing is tilt sensitivity, which I'm not quite good enough to perceive anyway.

[Q] Nexus 7 - more questions

Hi, Ive got some questions regarding the N7:
1) Do you have any experience with the Quickoffice Pro tablet suite? I used it for a few days on an Ainol Hero 10" tablet and liked it and now Im afraid of a smaller screen. I sent the Ainol back because of reboots.
2) I heard about some N7 trouble with screen detaching from the frame. Is it still relevant?
Thanks!
Bam!!!
Boom!!!
1. Personally I find the 10 inch tablets too big, might as well use a laptop or PC especially when creating content. The 7 inch is comfortable to hold and you can type fairly easily with your thumbs in a phone style grip. Never used the app so can't comment on that. If you have any shops near you that sell the N7 you could go try one and see how it feels.
2. I bought two N7's recently and the slightly older build 16gb version has very slight lift (unnoticeable unless you're looking for it), while the newest build 32gb is perfect. Screen lift is certainly still an issue but from what I've read it's a minority of devices. The newer the batch the less likely it has problems, or so it seems. You can always RMA until you get a perfect one anyway (I know it's hassle but at least you aren't stuck with it).
The screen lift is not slight problem, but image retention is also a problem on a N7.

I have two. A 16gb C60 (older build), which I am giving to my daughter for Christmas, and a C90 32gb one I have about a month.
No issues with either...screen lift or otherwise.
I use OfficePro and it is great. Plenty is screen real estate. I had an older 9" tablet. It was too big/heavy for prolonged use.

QO Pro and Pro HD are both available for the Nexus 7, but I'd recommend picking Pro HD over Pro (it's essentially a difference in UI). The main reason is the HD file manager is a little more intuitive, and supports drag and drop, whereas Pro requires checkboxes and cut/copy/paste operations.

Note 8 Digital Art

The Galaxy Note series gave me the opportunity to start creating digital art. I do traditional pen, pencil and watercolors, and had no time to sit to do stuff with a tablet at home or carry a laptop and sit. I actually wanted a Wacom Cintique that is an extra touch screen, nearing some $2000.
So, when I got the first Galaxy Note came, I started to learn to do digital drawing. I managed to work well with the Sketchbook Express app. I then got the Note II last January, these were some of my more serious drawings using the Sketchbook Pro with process:
Anne Hathaway

Arya Stark
http://flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157632932865305/
And my winning entry for winning this Note 8 from SamMobile Netherlands
http://flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157632969056494/
I've recently bought the Sketchbook Ink, only available for tablets and here are some of my work on caricatures:

I'm hooked on digital drawing. The Note 8.0 is a perfect size factor for convenience with ample screen area.

Not the same app, but apparently your best choice for watercolor at this time:

I am a very serious watercolorist and I teach it in architecture school. The rating for the Auryn app is only 3 out of 5. Reports from some Note 10.1 users say it doesn't work. That's bad. And the samples shown aren't that impressive. I intend to see some better results and I wish there was a free to try version.
Thanks. The skills and discipline from traditional medium onto digital medium is quite easy enough. The Arya Stark portrait is airbrush method using the Adobe Photoshop Touch for phones on the Note 2.
I love the Sketchbook Ink app. It's good to note that you can save/export up to 8000 by 12800 pixel images! More art as I make them.

Very nice work. It is cool how you used a framework of lines and proportions to do the face. Did you also do something like that for the profile? Would like to see more note 8 art!
This is the exact reason I want a Note 8.0. I'm a digital media major right now and I lack drawing ability, but love working with digital imagery. I figured this would be a good push to mesh both and learn to properly draw! How difficult was the transition from paper to digital, especially on a Note?

Drawing/sketching is an acquired universal skill, just like reading or driving. I've struggled with drawing for the party 20 years. It's a never-ending endeavor. I learn new techniques and styles from every time I see new handmade images I see from books, colleagues, galleries, Internet and students. Each drawing you do, is a lesson. I have disciplined myself that spontaneity and welcoming accidents on paper and learning from mistakes rather than erasing them are the best way is been learning. Each drawing is practice, and the moving visual record and mind process that went along well be collected in your mind.
I still carry my sketchbooks and portable watercolor set. Any self-respecting visual artist should use sketchbooks. I do a lot of drawing from observation. I also do large pieces of 36" by 48" finely penciled and watercolored architectural pieces. I think we should not be slaves on one particular medium. I believe the basics of observing and applying line values, line angle direction, shape, proportions, contrast, composition, shades and shadows will always be there, even if you are going digital.
It's easier coming from traditional mediums to a digital device like the Note 8. But some aren't keen on going digital at all.
I do suggest you do join an art group like Urban Sketchers (we're 4000+ strong worldwide) to be encouraged in doing more sketches through live observation.

I figured as much. I still used my sketchbook from time to time, but most of the time it's abstract, and maybe observation drawing is what I really need. I figured I would get used to digital drawing, however as well, because honestly from my Bamboo Capture I've loved it.

The Note 8 is light and gives ample power for live drawings from observatons. It's good training for building up a visual vocabulary, and nothing is richer than directly sketching subjects on-the-spot. No pictures. No videos. No poses. Just direct creative drawing. It doesn't even matter if it's "correct". Sketching is experiencing the eye-mind-hand process. The more you do it, the better you be in tune with your own unique style.

I then decided not to get it because I heard of the bad battery life. I had no idea the pen was capable of starting like this.

With the Adobe Photoshop Touch, you can do this from scratch, to how realistic you can do:
This was done on my Galaxy Note II with the PS Touch for Phones. I will do something with the Note 8 when I find the time.

The Note 8.0's battery is just satisfactory. I can drain it in 4 hours of heavy usage like games or downloading continuous torrents. For stock browsing with minimal brightness, it could drain 7 to 8 of continuous usage. I stopped wakeups with Greenify to have apps like Facebook, Whatsapp, or anything that does updates to sleep when the screen is off.
I still would get this over other tablets because the Note 8.0 is powerful and is the only one with a Wacom digitizer.

Nice. Not bad for 5 minutes. I find Sketchbook Pro to be most versatile than most sketching apps. I'm using it to produce architectural illustrations for a design competition due in 45v days. It will be a testament to skill. It can't however (yet) replicate watercolors or the textures of oils.
You can make magic if you really commit a few hours.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm just learning how to use the different brush settings etc at the moment in Sketchbook and wont start to do anything serious until I am more comfortable with the tool. My background is pencils and watercolours (in collage 8 years ago), so its those mediums I'm most looking to replicate. I'm finding I'm quickly addapting to the "feel" of the screen rather than pencil and paper though.
note: my main intention is to develop a comic book style hence the big eyes in the sketch I attached, but i like the sound of the urban sketchers movement and may try and get more involved in it once I get more comfortable
