Sd-ext2 - Nexus One General

Hi guys,
I have a 1gb sd-ext partition that is nearly full, what with all the apps I have...
I also have another sd-ext partition created. Does anyone know if it can be used to keep apps there and use them, like how we use from our regular sd-ext.
Any ideas/thoughts if this is even possible ?
Thanks,
Greg.

Why don't you just enlarge your nearly full ext partition? I believe gparted can do this without wiping it. It may take a lot of time, though.

Yes, that's a possibility, but i read somewhere on xda that having 1.5gb or above creates issues?

Then don't make it larger than 1.5GB Some people say 1.5GB, others say 2GB. And it *can* become unstable, it doesn't have to. Don't know the facts about it.

I have 2gb ext4 on my N1 without troubles.

Regaining device memory

Hey guys, I just deleted a whole bunch of photos and videos (all saved to my desktop PC first) and my available storage space went from 4.8 GB to 8.48 GB, so only 2 GB short of the 11.50 GB total space which is great.
About the device memory, it says available space 1.61 GB. How much device memory does the phone come with and if I want to regain memory, how do I do that?
You've already made a thread in the (correct) Q&A section, no need to make another here.

Lol, who cares, honestly? Noone answered and it went to page 2. In the time it took you to write your reply you could probably have made an attempt to answer my question. Everyone's a moderator..
Device memory is about 2gb. Its a seperate part where apps are stored, so if you want to regain memery there delete apps. But you will only gain about 400mb max and have no apps.

Thanks matey. Ah, in that case, I'm fine with 1.61GB if I'm only down from 2GB. I was more curious than anything else.
So all apps get installed to the 2GB device memory only, and the USB storage is only for storing media right?

No, lots of apps also store their data on SD.
Usb storage is external flashdrive if your using an usbOTG adapter.
The SgsII has mainly a 16Gb version although some have reported owning 32Gb versions. That comes down to about 1.8Gb for apps separate, and 11.5Gb for your data.
Some apps can be installed on the 11.5Gb partition. That mainly depends on the app itself.

Thats the thing, for what the partitioning table (PIT in Odin) is used.
On my phone:
aroung 500MB for the system
2GB for appdata
12.5GB for userdata
These are around 15GB, to be correct i must say 15GiB, because if you convert it to the normal space everyone is talking about, you will get 16GB.
(1GiB = 1,073GB)

EXFat is now supported on the SGS3!!! Tip for fast sdcard inside!

So I just seen that the SGS3 supports EXFat and files over 4gb's now. So if you want a really fast SD card, consider formatting from Fat32 over to exfat, and set block size to 16mb or 32mb. I know most if not all my files are 5mb or way over that, so not much space is wasted! I hope that helps someone

Can you format ex fat in the phone itself or has to be pc? I purchased a 64gb sdxc card and will need to do this.

Why on earth would you want a 32 MB block size? Seems like you would end up with a ton of wasted space.

Well for me I have a lot of movies, huge pictures, music over 7mb. I myself use 16mb. But for people that want full speed from exfat will select 32mb.

I don't have the phone or Id let you know. I do have my 32gb c10 ready to go when it gets here though

So would that mean that any files I have under 16mb will in fact take up 16mb of space? Even files that are only a few kb?
Yes. I know it sounds scary, but most small items are stored on the phone sdcard.

I didn't read the whole thread. But from what I saw, only 3 people had a problem. And at first he said he copied 1900 files and had corruption, then he states its a problem over 3000. I don't know if this is user error, or what. But thanks for the warning, Ill keep an eye out....... And if that guy was checking file by file for 1900 songs, that's some serious time, I call BS.

I unloaded my 64gb sd card, put it in the phone and it formatted it to exfat, I copied all my data back to the card and did a restore from mybackup pro, after the restore and reboot I then received a damaged sd card, i'm not sure what's going on, The only 2 options on windows is NTFS and exFat
Performance gain will be nominal. You're talking a phone here, not a database server dealing with heavy iOPS. I have a 64GB Class 10 in mine and performance could not be better. I also had a ***** of a time getting the card to register after I let my PC format it, had to, absolutely had to, let the device format it.
Note: I'm a heavy performance user who goes for maximum battery without overly sacrificing performance. Professionally, I build and configure SAN's for Exchange, SQL and vSphere. I make no claims to being a phone development god (thought about refreshing my skills there but frankly, don't have the time), BUT I'm also VERY good at what I do.

Had the same problem. I had no option but to let the phone format it. Delete the partition in windows and then you can format it. If you find another way though, let me know!
Sorry misread your post, I had the same error and had to let it reformat. Did you unplug it and put it into your PC? Were any corrective scans or anything done?
I removed everything back off the card, formatted it to fat32 and copied everything back to it, put it back in the phone and it's still saying it's damaged. Sucks, it's been in my EVO3D for a week now with no problems.
is the extra juice really worth the possibility of data corruption? Im not trying to be a wise guy, just really been wondering myself.

Well I must say now I'm worried. But I'm still going to test, I copy huge files to and from on a regular basis, if it saves me 3% in time each time, that is still worth it to me in the long run. I have very little patience, and all that time adds up.

Any ideas how to increase Internal Storage Space in Nexus 4's esp. in 8gb's

Since the N4 lacks an SD card slot and isn't OTG supported. Is there anything we can delete in the system files to increase internal storage space?
If anyone has any ideas that won't cause the OS to crash or soft brick, I'm all for it because I literally load my phone with music until there's around +/- 200mb's left.

Deleting stuff off /system won't do anything because it's not even the same partition as /data (and the /system partition is always the same size, you can't resize it to give that space to /data)
Also /data and /data/media are the same partition, so you would gain more space by deleting non-system apps and their cached data.
Far as music goes, you could resort to using Google Play Music and just stream most of it.
PS: You may have a bunch of cache and data files you don't need left from old applications, in which case I would backup everything you have in /data/media , back up your apps (perhaps with Titanium backup and such).
Then in recovery you can do "Format Data" (not wipe data, but format) as it will format even the /data/media section, giving you a clean slate (you don't need to wipe system or anything like that, when you boot back up it'll be like a fresh install), reinstall your apps (restore their data with titanium backup), and can then move over what you want.
Or you can just pick thru the /sdcard/android/data or /sdcard/data folder and delete folders for applications you know have been removed.
I usually go through the rom and delete live wallpapers and such also, not a huge save but I never use them so might as well get the little bit of space back

That stuff is usually in /system and will provide no space to /data, at best it just cuts down on the possible background tasks running.

I thought it would cut down total ROM size though no? Thus leaving a little, if even marginal usable space. I remember on the HD2 making ROM sizes small as possible was the thing for maximum leftover space but I could easily be mistaken.

Nope, even on my old desire-z the /system partition is a set size. Shrinking the rom will just add space to the /system that is usually read only anyways and will not grant you usable space to the /data partition.

Ps: at least on the desire-z you could flash either a DZ or tmobile's G2 bootloader would repartition the system size smaller or larger (DZ one had larger system for sense roms) and no its not possible to customize your own partition sizes without breaking the whole phone.

You can try turning some of your regular apps to system apps. You can do that from TB. But don't fill the system partition leave space not sure how much.then deleting cache and Dev to reoptimze.

This is true but there are not a lot of larger apps that play nice being system apps. The bulk of the apps space will still be saved to /data. Just as an FYI.

[Q] Bad storage reading

Hi all,
I've got a nexus 4 here, running paranoid android 3.9, and my storage is just not right, When I calculate the taken up space by stuff like music, apps, others I should have a bit over 3gb of free space. And my phone says I've got 1gb. Any idea of what might be the problem?
I'll post a snapshot tomorrow when I get to the computer, for some reason it doesn't wanna post it from a phone.
Thanks!

Use the app Disk Usage: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage
When you use it, make sure you click /data not just sdcard because /data directory is more accurate for checking storage
Thanks,
CWM backups take a bit more space then the ones on my old phone, where they would be around 500mb and on my nexus is around 2gb

Hello everyone
Sorry for my last post. I didn't attach pic in that. Here it is. My model has 8gb space. Apps and files take only 4gb. And alloted space is 4.7gb for this. As a result I get storage space minimum notification constantly. So can anyone tell me where the remaining space is and is it possible to shift some space to storage

There is 8gb there, but it's partitioned into about 4gb each. One for the OS and the other for media. So, you'll only be able to utilize 4gb for app storage.
