hi guys,
first of all, thank you so much for providing a way to upgrade my defy.
my dev kernel version: 2.6.29 firmware: 2.1-update1
Is there a specific process i have to follow to root my defy? Sorry to ask this kid level question here coz am new to this rooting stuff.
thank you !
niv
run super one click
connect your phone via USB to PC
click on start (in Super one click)
enable usb debugging when it tells "waiting for device"
after finish, reboot your phone
install 2ndinit
reboot
flash whatever you want
Note: thats the simplest procedure tested by myself on stock froyo, may work for eclair too...
where & how wud i give input that i need the latest OS (possible for defy)? somewhere i read that for eclair users, we shud update first the device to froyo and then the latest. Is that right?
Just tried installing 'SndInitDefy_2.3.apk' and it says, 'cudn't obtain root permissions. Is Superuser or Supersu installed?'. pls assist

If you actually want to know what are you doing study some of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Motorola_Defy
You need to root your phone before installing 2ndInit (custom recovery). What is rooting should be explained in the wiki page.
1. Donwload this to your computer: http://depositfiles.com/files/n0dcxce3t (pc app for rooting)
2. connect your phone via USB
3. In settings -> Applications -> enable USB debugging.
4. Run the app on your pc with your phone connected.
5. After restart, your phone should be rooted.
5. Win, now you can instal 2ndInit and throught this custom roms.
itz hung in the first stage after clicking the Root. It says 'deamon started successfully'. can someone help?

cm10 24sept is the latest!
if you are looking for stability and gaming go for cm7.2 which is a gingerbread rom, cm9 is icecream sandwich which is unstable and finally we have cm10 jelly bean rom which is quite stable...I'm currently on cm10 because i cant live without the new features of the latest version of android therefore it depends on you...note that games do run on cm10, i have dead trigger and Samurai II: Vengeance which runs great!!

This thread is reserved for nightly builds of CyanogenMod Rom for Samsung Captivate.
All Samsung Roms run on top of BML/RFS, CyanogenMod 7 does NOT.
It runs on MTD/yaffs2 (like Nexus One) which means you'll not able to flash just any kernel or run just any other filesystem you want. Use it as it is if possible, otherwise confirm with the kernel developer that you are trying to install whether it would work with CM. We do not support other kernels and know nothing about their capabilities or compatibility. Only the data partition, which is on movinand, is ext4 like on speedmod or voodoo ("lagfix"). No "lagfix" is necessary because this does not use any Samsung proprietary file systems.
CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) which greatly extends the capabilities of your phone.
Code:
** These CyanogenMod builds are highly experimental and unsupported.
**
** Please refrain from submitting bug reports for any issues
** you may encounter while running one of these builds.
**
** Submitting bug reports on nightly builds is the leading
** cause of male impotence.
What are Nightly builds? Auto compiled build of the latest CyanogenMod source from github. This version changes each night and aren't officially supported.
If you find bugs/issues you can/must discuss here (do not submit nightlies bugs on CyanogenMod issue tracker).
Warning : Not for new users, flash this build only if you know what you are doing !!! Make SURE you can get into Download mode using only buttons (no other method, Download mode from just buttons is essential).
INSTRUCTIONS:
Latest version: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=captivatemtd
Check the md5sum if you want to be sure that the download worked (different OSes have different programs that do md5, on ubuntu it is md5sum that you run against the zip you download and compare to the md5sum number shown on the download website). ROMManager does this automatically for ROMs you download via ROMManager.
- First time flashing CM 7 to your Captivate (or coming from another ROM)?
Easy way:
Start with a rooted Eclair/Froyo running Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders (do not ask us how to do this).
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Captivate (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 2.x).
Make sure you can reboot into ClockworkMod recovery from ROMManager. Reboot and get back into ROMManager Premium.
Choose download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe data, cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
Harder way:
Make sure you're running a Eclair/Froyo Firmware (2.1 or 2.2) and Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders!
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon (through ROMManager is easiest)
- Upgrading from earlier CM7?
ROM Manager method:
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Captivate (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 3.x).
Choose Download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
Clockwork Mod method:
Download and push the ROM zip file to the sdcard.
Reboot into recovery.
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Install the ROM zip from sdcard (your Google apps will be backed up automatically)
There are no Google Apps bundled with CM ROMs, because Google asked Cyanogen to remove copyrighted apps. After flashing the rom, don't forget to flash Google Addon package if you want it. ROM Manager will allow you to flash it if you just go into it and after flashing the ClockworkMod recovery for MTD devices, choose Download ROMs, and pick Google Apps.

That is the funneyest thing i have herd.
Just want to make sure my understanding is correct
- Don't use "reboot recovery" command or other shiny things to do this!
Flash cm7-captivate-initial-kernel.tar as pda using odin without auto-reboot
So after flash of efs pull battery, get to dl mode, flash initial kernel with auto reboot off. Pull bay after flash go back to recovery?
Do a wipe
Factory restore in clockwork?
Install the Nexus S USB-Drivers from SDK-Manager if you're using windows.
Are these drivers needed to use odin our just files transfers
To revert to a samsung rom, simply use odin with repartition option enabled.
Does odin one click qualify here or use full version?
Just making sure I understand instructions fully, thanks

Thank you very much but because this is a test release, I will keep my eye very close to see how everyone else does on this ROM. Actually, I'm scared to flash this until it's stable enough for a daily driver .
Can I reserve a post this late? Lol

No, please read the instructions fifty-thousand times before you do anything. It clearly says to use the three button combo to reboot, directly underneath that. If you do a battery pull while in Download mode, you risk destroying your phone.

These are drivers to use your phone (incorrect, but avoiding the question). Just install the drivers, because the instructions say so. If you don't, you can't plug your phone into your computer.

Odin One Click. Or Odin3. It doesn't matter. Just reboot into Download mode using the button combo and use Odin.
I must be dumb but, There is no efs-backup for initial kernel to even download, Or I'm unable to find it. On that page, all I see is Initial package, update, and google-addon. No kernel, no efs package.
EDIT: k. I just fail. It was inside the initial package. .-.
Thank you for the response. The initial kernel to be flashed via odin is the z image inside the initial package?
This is why I love Android and XDA! Sweet! Even before Samsung releases it to the I9000 (granted it's still under development).
Are the modem links dead for anyone else?
Yeah I have no idea where the "initial kernel" is. It's not ANYWHERE on the site, nor in the initial package.

Step 1. Go to the developer section
Step 2. Read the stickies
Step 3. Select a ROM that suits your needs
Step 4. Follow the instructions found in the stickies for rooting, installing CWM, and flashing a custom ROM carefully
Finally. Do not install the 3.2 FOTA update if you want to root. You will not be able to root or install a custom ROM if you do.
i read the sticks several time but i cant manage to flash my iconia the problem appears to me with the program "iconia recovery installer" when I download it and transfare it to the tablet the install buttom was not shown
So you are not rooted yet, find iconiaroot 1.3 I think is the latest one and root your tablet, install acer recovery, then flash your rom make sure you do backup before flashing rom, hope this helps.

I believe I read this some where on this forum that if you want to install ***cm11 (cm-11-20140117-NIGHTLY-mb526)*** then you need to go back to the custom rom first then from there you can install , though I'm not 100% Sure and afraid to do any experimentation with my Defy+.... Buddy Im already running cyanogenmod on my defy+ and in the second link what you gave for installing the 2ndinit Recovery it says:
DO NOT INSTALL THIS IF ARE YOU ALREADY RUNNING CYANOGENMOD. That ROM already has bootmenu pre-installed, and you'll probably end up having to flash an SBF file to recover your phone.
NOTE: You need ROOT installed on your Defy to use this application.
What should I do ???
I will try from start by using original sbf file using RSD and then CM11 and updating recovery after that Kitkat ,btw can you mention which ROM you tried because i tried these 2 earlier --> omni-4.4.2-20140117-mb526-HOMEMADE .zip and AOSPA 4.0+ PARANOIDANDROID [beta]

Mine sbf is rooted alredy so maybe try it first then go to CM10 .
its DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_CEE_ROOTED_No_Signed.rar
downloaded it earlier from here only.
I have tried Mokee, but direct return to Quarx compilation made big stability problems too. Solution was to flash with original rom, then rooted one, 2ndInint and Quarx cm10, then cm11.
As I had Android 2.3.6 (3.4.5.1 - 231), I used these roms - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542956.
It is very important to wipe data and cache just after first, original flash - otherwise you will have infinite boot loop and cannot run phone.
Look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537 too.

“Half-Success :-/ … system partition is read-only, use local.prop trick. Reboot your device and use adb to see if it runs as root”
then I restarted my phone and check with root checker and found its saying its saying Root access successful and then I wondered which I suppose I shudnt have wondered :crying: to user framaroot and do the "unroot" and again restarted , and now after restart I tried to do the regular thing wipe cache ,Dalvik , Data and the phone is not even mounting them its sayin
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command etc
Im able to open the android 4.1.2 (Jb - quarx)
but not able to install a thing in my internal memory coz I messed up bad with the partition table bad:crying:
I tried to fix it through this

my problem is only wifi disconnects frequently -seems on this working fine ,will check it for few days ,anyway 4.4 will still have bugs so better be on some lower version.

anyways just fighting with my Defy+ as of now , Installing the Stock sbf on it as I bricked the phone

Hey guys,
I hope you're noob friendly here too and can help me with my phone:
I have a Xcover2 which I have already successfully rooted with an Android image.
My problem: I use link2sd to send almost all apps to my external SD card. That works fine. But after some time, my phone seems to block the FAT32 partition of the external SD card, which means I can't write or reed from the normal external storage partition anymore. After formating the partition on my PC, it works again for some time, but the problem comes back sooner or later.
Now:
A friend suggested to use CM as alternativ. Unfortunately my XCover2 is not officially supported. I found an image for CM developed of one of you here but I have no clue how to root my phone with CM. Obviously it works different than with Odin.
Can someone help me?
Sorry I just started with the topic of how to hack a phone, so I am very happy for any help!

Actually not, I root my device with the same root.zip on any ROM (custom/stock). Anyway, Cyanogenmod comes rooted. Just Install SuperSU from playstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu

Hey Carlyle,
thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I still don't know, how to use the CM image that one of your developers has uploaded. For my first root I could used a tar.md5-file. The zip-file for CM is a lot more complexe. So now I have no idea how to use it. You see I'm really just starting.

Oh, do you mean you don't know how to flash CM? Is your phone still on stock firmware?

Hey,
no as I said, it is already running on a rooted Android Version (4.1.2). The XCover 2 is not officially supported by Cynogenmod.com

OK, so you're not on cyanogenmod yet. You don't need to root it, you need to flash it... This was the confusion here. Rooting is gaining administrative privileges on your device flashing is modifying/changing software through recovery, Odin or FastBoot. So, I'm guessing you still have a custom recovery from when you rooted? TWRP or CWM Recovery?
Edit: follow this guide (choose either CWM or TWRP) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2352252
Search for gapps for your device on google or here in XDA
Reboot into recovery
Select install (TWRP) or install from SD card (CWM)
Navigate to the cm .zip file you downloaded and install it
Navigate to the gapps .zip and install it
Wipe cache and factory reset
Reboot

Hello everybody...
This post was created with the intention of helping those people who want to upgrade their baseband version of ZUK Z2+. There are some methods to do this, some of them could erase all your information (qfil) and some others could block bootloader (.zip).
The presented method in this post will not erase either your data or block your bootloader.
Note: when I say "data" I'm referring to images, downloads, videos, etc. This method won't erase any data located on root/sdcard.
Here are the steps for upgrading baseband:
1: Download this ROM and transfer it to you cellphone. (NOTE: It's highly recommended to download it from your PC. I downloaded it through my phone and at the time of flahing, it gave me an error; It said it was a corrupt file. So, download it through your PC.)
2: Go to TWRP and wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache.
3: Flash the ROM and be patient.
As the aim of this post is upgrading the baseband, some of you might wonder "Is it necessary to boot up so that baseband could be updated?", I don't actually know it. When I installed this ROM at first I wasn't after a baseband upgrade, rather taste it to see how it was (btw, it's the best nougat ROM so far; my humble opinion). So, we could say that you can try not to wait till it boot up, and install your whished ROM right after the first flashed ROM. But I highly recommend you to taste this ROM.
IMPORTANT DATA: this ROM will update baseband to 1.70 version.
There is a more recent version than the one used on the steps above (I do not know whether this version is capable of upgrading baseband or not. I tried to root that version with Magisk 15.3 but unable to). Here is the ROM.
If you decided to taste this ROM you should know that the only available languages are Chinese and English, and flashing gapps' zip won't work. In order for you all to solve gapps problem do the following:
1: Download Google Installer 2.0
2: Install, open and download all fundamental data from Google Installer
3: For contacs app to work properly do the fallowing: go to settings/apps/Google Contact Sync/Permissions, grant all permissions and restart your phone.
This ROM includes some chinese apps, but those can be disabled very easily if you go to apps' window.
LongTap does not work on this ROM.
Thanks to @Not_James_Bond for providing me the GoogleDrive's link of the ROM, since the official website is weibo and it's a little bit tedious download things from there.

OMG...
Do you seriously think that to change the baseband you need to flash a new ROM ???
It is necessary to follow closely the answers to your questions. Everything is much simpler.

Maybe you got him all wrong. It's the safest way bcz on Zukfans thread some zips lock bootloader so we have to flash unlock img right after baseband flashing. If anyone boots without flashing img he/she may lose his internal storage . So it's imp to flash unlock img before booting up the device right after updating baseband.
