[Q] Opinion on CM7 variants: Mirage vs Mrom vs CM7.2 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious if anyone has any solid opinions about the 3 roms mentioned. They all seem pretty excellent to me.
Any particular one that you like over the others and why? Or vice versa?

i had been using 7.2 Mirage for a good long time and love it but just saw the MROM and downloaded it last night.. over night the battery life held really well but i always like to give it a few days to see how it goes.. i dont think you can go wrong either way.. CM9 just isnt a daily driver yet.. there are a few builds that have some nice features but just are still glitchy for me..

If I had to change today I would go to Paranoid Android but Mirage-Kang ain't broke so...

I've been with Mirage-Kang since MiRaGe first introduced it. Last week I went with Mrom and was impressed with great battery life. Currently I have PA on internal storage and getting used to the interface. It has had some crashes primarily because of my voltage settings but all in all I like it. We'd have something if we had the core of Mirage-Kang, the battery life of Mrom and the uniqueness of PA!

May I ask what it is particularly that you like about Mirage over Mrom? I personally haven't noticed anything strikingly different between them.

I had been with Mirage for nearly a year so my factory reset skills were wanting. There were other small annoyances so I quickly went to investigating PA. That said, Mrom has had the best battery life I've seen. I'm currently modifying the voltage settings in PA to see if I can improve the battery life there.

Ay differences performance wise tho?

I'm on my seconde Mirage build. I wwas on 0730 until a few days ago. Tried flashing the MROM, but my device didn't work right at all after that (probably user error, I'm a noob...) so I restored my old setup and then flashed the 0930 build. I can't say I notice any difference in performance between those builds, and battery life is great!
I have had an official 7.2 ROM installed as well, but I like the notification bar better in Mirage, and it felt a little "snappier" when I first installed it. Might be my imagination though.

I have gone back to Mirage because of lagginess and crashes. Can't beat its stability and responsiveness. That said, it's really not a fair comparison because I wasn't on the other ROMs long enough to see if the issues sorted themselves out.

Been going back and forth myself a lot. Mirage really didn't pick up wireless off of sleep well at all, but mrom does this great. It also is somehow lacking all the wall paper options (minor thing, I know, but I don't know how to fix it and wonder why it's an issue).
Performance wise, I see no difference in the two. Haven't had any lags or crashes other than I can't get adbwireless to work on mrom.
I don't get how any of them use internal storage vs an actual sd card, but I think I'm sort of settling on mrom.

Yep, just try both and see what works better for you. I have, and I like the Trigger 2.7 personally. Just seems "flashier" and shows off the phone a little better, in my opinion.
Both are VERY good ROMs and you can't go wrong with either
Tried both, can't tell the difference speed wise. Battery life is also good on both.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
For me the biggest difference between the two is level of "polish." They are both nice ROMs, but Trigger is just slightly better IMO in regards to the slickness and cosmetic appeal. As was stated above, it's the ROM to show off your phone to friends.
And I never experience any slow-downs or lagginess anywhere and I can't remember the last time I had a FC.
Trigger is the closest thing to my favorite ROM from my G1 days, SuperD.

Just flash both, and see which one you like the most.
Then when CM7 is finally fully stable, and has great battery life, go to that.

but then team whiskey will come out with 2.3 that is better. Cm7 is not really the best. I've tried a cm7 rom many times on different phones and there just not "Polished".
The TeamWhiskey will be a stock 2.3.
Compared to CM which has a bunch of speed improvements and options to enhance your phone!

What's the best daily for battery & performance?

Ok, so currently I have my girlfriend on the CM9 beta 1 build... and it's ok... but it just isn't quite getting the battery life she would like. So here are the priorities:
1. Need longest battery life
2. Stability is second, but most important with things like google music and youtube.
3. General quickness
We both really like CM9, but I am starting to think she is losing battery faster than normal. I would like input from folks that have tried out almost all the roms and have found the best combo that meets the order of priorities listed. I am willing to go with an additional kernel if the advice is sound and compelling.
Thanks in advance... I would really like to get her on a good daily driver.
I think most people will tell u that each device handles things differently resulting in different battery life..
That being said, I think most would agree that our cm9 is probably not the best choice if battery life is a top priority.. personally, I get the best battery life with cm7, I would recomend that, and if u start feeling saucy, throw a custom kernel on there too for undervolting with voltage control.
If she prefers something touchwiz, there's a lot of good options, try gleangb
As always, wipe data cache and dalvik in cwm before flashing her from cm9 to anything gingerbread.
Good luck!

Wow... thanks everyone... CleanGB it will be. Im curious as to why they have gone over a month with no updates?
I think part of it is there isn't much to update. It's a stripped down, optimized 'cleangb', not '50,000 tweaks, hacks, and new features every 5 minutes gb'.
You stop when you get it right. Certain tweaks react differently on each phone so Toadlife leaves those to the user to decide what is right for them.

Hybrid CM10/Paranoid or CM10 Kang? Pros, Cons, etc.

So I have been off of here for a while and saw CM10 up and thought that was amazing...Then i saw the hybrid one and got confused. I'm going to upgrade to one of them but have no clue which one to go to. So I am trying to figure out the pros and cons of each (battery life, annoying bugs, customization, stability, etc). PLEASE no comments like "Hybrid is amazing! forget Kang!" or vice versa...that gives me absolutely no information.
Try them yourself, that's the best answer.
Both are constantly updating so no talking about stability or bugs for now...
So if choice's upon me I'd have that ParanoidAndroid (hybrid) 'cuz I just love tablet UI AND I don't even use any cellular functions of E4G. You can choose to your likings like me too. Hope you finally get attached to one of them, welcome to Jelly Bean!

CM10 Kang is near flawless. Only issue I have is roaming doesn't work. There is a work around where you can use the stock kexec boot to enable roaming and then boot back into CM10. This doesn't really help me tho as I live in an area where I'm not quite roaming and not quite on sprint's towers depending on where I am in my house. I use roam control to force roaming so I get 3 bars.
Hmmm seems like I'm *****ing but I'm not, this problem really only affects me. If you live in an area with decent signal go the Kang'd route, all the CM10 features and OMG is this ROM snappy!!!!! Even with the roaming thing it's still my daily driver and I just deal with poor signal at home because the ROM is worth it.

It's really more about personal preference. PA=CM+framework changes+app to control those changes. If you want to take tons of time to get exactly what you want, PA is the way to go. If you want a simpler experience, with fewer worries due to the extreme level of control, go with CM.
so pretty much as far as battery life, possible bugs (if any), snappyness, etc., they are pretty much equal. just paranoid has alot more customization? I would have tried both already but there is some bug on my laptop that wont let me transfer files from my laptop to anything D:

The only con is a slightly slower Android upgrade path. Having said that, 2-3 weeks max (for a Nexus device) isn't that long to wait. Beats all the manufacturers.

Not really. When CM does get updated to the next version of Android, Nexus devices are the first to get it on CM whereas other devices will take longer (and things may not be working day one for other phones whereas Nexus it will be working from day one, just not all the CM goodies will be available right away as it'll take time to port them over)
Alternatively, people may flash non-CM roms and just a AOSP version of the new Android to try out new features etc etc
My biggest consideration is battery , I'm not impressed with my battery hardly making it through a 8 hours of the day.

Kernel plays a bigger role in battery conservation more than a ROM. People always gets mixed between the two.
To fix battery problems,
1) Ensure Google Latitude is off (it's in Google Maps). Disable automatic reporting of location and all the other checks in that menu.
2) Flash a ROM that meets your requirements (there is no BEST ROM).
3) Flash a Kernel that meets your requirements based upon feedback and past experiences (there is no BEST KERNEL).
4) Install BetterBatteryStats @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
5) Use BetterBatteryStats to ensure there are no kernel and partial wakelocks. If there are debug them. Ensure that your phone is indeed deep sleeping (use BetterBatteryStats to look at CPUStates or download CPUSpy from Play Store).
I recommend CM10.1 Jellybro + Franco Kernel, but that's based on my own personal opinions. Look around the dev forums and decide what you like the most
Edit: Oh yeah, how could I forget... go into Google Now and disable the cards you don't need.

+1 for CM10.1 Jellybro + Franco. I've also used MiNCO ROM which is pretty good, but not a ton of features yet so I'm sticking with CM10.1
Installed CM10.1 , seems there is more real estate (5 icons across vs 4?) ...

It's the same thing as CM10.1 but including cherry picks.
Cherry picks are unmerged features that are currently pending/awaiting approval from CM. They are implemented within Jellybro before official nightlies get them. It is a very stable ROM and uses the same sources as CM. So whatsever in CM10.1 is in Jellybro, just jellybro has extras (very minimal)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015081 is the thread.

It's basically CM 10.1 with some cherry picks (additions) that either get merged into CM or they are removed because they become obsolete

To elaborate on dmorand,
If cherry picks disappear, it's because they were merged, abandoned or conflict with the current source or other cherry picks.

that's only the case on devices that weren't made to run aosp android, such as HTC (sense), Samsung (touchwiz), motorolla (motoblur). on nexus devices that natively run stock android, cm works id say 99% perfectly. and usually if there is a "bug" its cosmetic and doesn't affect the functionality of the phone one bit, and once reported by a user it gets fixed pretty fast (within the next few nightlies)

[Q] Optimal Setup for Nexus 4?

Hi!
I got my Nexus 4 three days ago.
My Usage Specs -
I use my N4 mainly for internet ( WiFi, sometimes 2G ) and a little bit of gaming. I make occasional calls and text rarely.
I don't use WhatsApp or Facebook.
I'm using STOCK ROM+Kernel.
I'm getting around 10-12 hours of battery life, with 4-5 hours of screen-on time.
Now, I want to be able to over/under clock & volt my CPU+GPU. This is to increase battery life and increase performance, as required.
It looks like too much choice is very confusing. So, I'd like some experienced suggestions and recommendations.
So, which _ should I use? ( And, I've already narrowed down the choices a bit )
Kernel - Faux, Motley, Franco
ROM - AOSP(Stock), CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android, Xylon
Also, should I use Battery, CPU, RAM managers? If so, which ones?
What are some cool, useful N4 specific apps?
Any other tweaks and tips? - You can link to other xda threads, if available.
I will be unlocking and rooting tomorrow, once I decide which kernel+ROM to use.
Thanks!
Ram and battery managers are not necessary. You have 2GB of ram. Battery saver apps do not work. besides you said you're getting 4-5 hours of screen time. That's great!

I use Paranoid Android with its stock kernel. For me, no other rom can compare to Pa on the nexus 4! Not even cyanogen mod is as fluid, stable, and efficient. With my current setup I get around 16 hours battery life (5:30 am-11ish pm), with ~5 hours screen on time. I don't use any task killers or memory managers. I just make sure to force close all my apps when I'm done with them, and I reboot the phone every 24 hours to keep it at its maximum performance. Although my usage is slightly different. I use my phone mainly to browse the Web, text and occasionally snap some pictures and check instagram. Hopefully this helps you out a bit

Okay, and you use PA too?
Also, how does the kernel affect smoothness? Shouldn't the performance be the same as long as you don't change clock speeds? Or is it due to the new governors that the kernel uses?
Also, what about motley kernel? The thread is very spartan, and I can't glean much info about it.
Has anyone tried Xylon? - it looks efficient.

I've tried the Franco kernel before but I find the stock PA one to be perfect as far as colors go. I've never had an issue with smoothness using it and I don't even worry about clock speed or governors. As far as xylon goes, I found it to be very washed out using the stock kernel that comes with the rom, again in terms of display. When I ran xylon for a few days, I ran into a few hiccups in performance that weren't acknowledged, even when running with different kernels. I've also tried AOKP, Cyanogen, and axiom, but I always return back to paranoid

So I have experimented and tested most of the major kernels and ROMs.
AND..... My selection/combo for now is:
kernel - Franco Milestone 2
ROM - Carbon 1.7
I tried Paranoid Android, but I didn't really like their interface adjustments.
And, just CyanogenMod is boring, IMO. Xylon, too.
Carbon has great customisation, and the specific adjustments that I like.
Thanks for the help!

HI!
So I have experimented and tested most of the major kernels and ROMs.
AND..... My selection/combo for now is:
kernel - Franco Milestone 2
ROM - Carbon 1.7

Why not Franco R140? It's stable and a lot has changed since M2

Oh, I wasn't really sure whether it was stable, so I went with the milestone release.
Also, What are prime drivers?
Thanks!

Drivers with code from Code Aurora. They *may* fix stuff like slow WiFi speeds and delayed notifications. I personally use them but if you don't experience any problem with WiFi then I suggest flashing the normal ones. :fingers-crossed:
Try Matr1x kernel, gave me the best results when I tried through different ones.

I think I'll use the normal ones.
My internet speed is 4 Mbps and I don't use my WiFi to transfer files at all.
At the moment I'm getting the speeds I can technically get. So those won't help me, I guess.
Also, I've been running R140 without any problems for the last day.
Thanks!

Really? Maybe I will.
How is battery life and performance compared to franco kernel?

They're pretty much the same really. But Matr1x does wonders in benchmarks. I would love to use it however I need those Prima Drivers badly :S
