Hi all,
I just unlocked my nexus 7 using the N7 toolkit on XDA. I've noticed a few things:
-I cant boot into stock recovery unless the device is plugged into the computer or hit the "START" option in the fastboot menu.
Is this normal?
Can someone tell me how to use the stock recovery, i remember on my Galaxy nexus pressing volume down and power would bring up a menu. This doesn't seem to work on my N7?
Thanks
AFAIK that's normal for the N7. You can't boot into stock recovery without being plugged in. Haven't tried with any of the rom toolboxes out there tho.
Its a boot loader bug

Greetings,
I have successfully unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7. Now I'm attempting to flash CWM to the device, and it seems to have successfully gone, however I can't seem to boot to it. I've used the Google Nexus 7 Toolkit V2 which says it successfully flashed it, but still am unable to boot into cwm.
After shutting down the device I hold the up + down + power buttons down and all it does is boots into fastboot mode. If I let go of the buttons when I see the google image then the device just boots normally. Can anyone clarify what I'm doing wrong here? Cheers.
From fastboot, if you hook up your nexus to the computer, with the cable included then select 'recovery' by toggling thru the choices with volume and using the power button to select, it should boot into cwm. It only boots when connected to a computer, it's a known bug Next time do a forum search, dont start a new thread.

same problem like you,
i install rom toobox from market.
in that app, use rebooter, then choose reboot into recovery.
welcome
When i try to reboot into recovery from fastboot, I get stuck at the google logo and nothing happens. However, when I try to boot into recovery from android with the expanded power menu or usuing the toolkit, it works without a hitch? Does this mean I have a dodgy tablet?

Apparently this is an issue for a lot of people including myself. I haven't found a solution to enter recovery from the fast boot menu other than using an app like quick reboot from the play store.
If you find a permanent solution please share it here thanks.

This is an issue for everyone and it's a problem with the bootloader. The only way to get to recovery from the fastboot menu is to have your USB cable plugged into both the Nexus 7 and your running computer.
So my name is kinda weird. Sometimes glgps persists ans drains the battery. And I can't get into recovery. Here's a pic of my recovery. It seems like fields aren't filled in. (obviously i hid my serial) What gives?
thats normal, looks exactly like the ones I had, to get into recovery you have to hook up to usb
Your bootloader is still locked. You need to unlock to get into recovery.
Edit: Oops, my bad. You don't need to be unlocked to access recovery apparently.

It is a pic for your Bootloader (Fastboot Mode). Using Volume Up/Down, you can select wether boot the device, or reboot into recovery. When you selected what you want, press Power.
Also, yes the product name is fine : Grouper is the product name of Nexus 7.
first you need unlock

Sorry mods. Please move this to q&a.
Thanks to the replies. You have to have USB to get into recovery? No other android device I've ever had , besides the Xoom needed that. You just selected recovery mode from boot loader. All well. I guess all are different.

Cept mine doesn't. When I select recovery mode it hangs at INI (white Google on a black background)
If you think the recovery is borked and want to reflash it , download the factory image from here, extract recovery.img from the image and put it in your platform-tools folder on your PC in ADB and once you are in bootloader from cmd prompt type
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
that is how I go back and forth between CWM and stock

Plug it into a computer and then go into recovery using the power and volume buttons.

Guys,
@animal gets stuck on google logo, that means the system is also broken..
You got to flash back the whole stock rom.

Do yourself a favor and download the Nexus 7 Toolkit from the Development section - it's allows you to do anything you need to via nice, easy to use menus (including downloading and reverting back to stock Google ROM). It's a *great* tool for the Nexus 7.

This isn't my first Android device, but it is my first nexus so I must admit that fast boot is new to me. It seems pretty straight forward although I can't seem to get into recovery recovery. I get into fast boot by pressing power plus both the volume buttons. From there the top right has a green start and I then press volume until it says start recovery in red. After hitting power, the device restarts and shows the Google screen with an unlock at the bottom but it seems to hang on this screen. Is there something I'm missing. The device can get into recovery from PA extended start menu and adb. And it seemed to do it on stock also. Am I doing something wrong?

I ran into the same problem as well.... can't get into recovery.
Just got my Nexus 7 and just rooted with Nexus Tool Kit.
Guys do a little search and you will find out, that this is a normal behaviour: You need to have the device connected to your PC by USB and it will be able to go to recovery.

Are you on PC try to uninstall and restart drivers.
On Mac try adb kill server. (Could be wrong but I think that's the command)
I have no Rom installed. I accidently try to install a kernal through recovery mode? I am completely lost.. First I rooted my phone and everything with the one-tool click. After that, I tried to install Elements. What Do i do.. I can get into fastboot mode..?
Try to get into recovery and do factory reset

You will need to stay in fastboot mode, then download the nexus toolkit, and it will download the stock firmware and install it for you. I've had my tablet in your situation plenty of times and using the toolkit has got me out every time

Press the power and volume down buttons at the same time to get to the bootloader and fastboot.
