Hi,
I've got some weird problems with my N1. I searched around but couldn't find the solution.
I've tried CM7 stable 7.0.3 and Nighties 87 builds, and this problem happens to both.
1. When I'm running an app, such as "plants vs zombies", or typing with keyboard, when I touch a spot, it thinks I touch another spot. For example, when I touch key "D", it may give me a "space". When I try to place a plant on the left side, it puts it on the right side.
2. When I'm watching videos with MoboPlayer, the screen is locked sometimes (maybe this is a setting that I don't know, how do I turn this feature off?). When I press the "menu" button, it was supposed to unlock the screen, but it actually unlocks and locks back and forth continuely, and the phone keeps vibrating.
All the problems will be gone if I just lock the phone and unlock again. However, it will come back after a while.
Please help and thank you very much!

Yep, always been a problem with the Nexus One and often on capacitive touchscreens when plugged into a charger. You've stated the known workaround.

Really? Are you saying that these problems happen to all Nexus one and we all have to live with them?
By the way, I have these problems regardless if I'm charing or not.

Correct.

I see. Thanks.
Just turn off the screen then back on, it clears this bug and only takes a second.
All nexus ones have this issue.
I traveled from Singapore to the States for about 2 weeks in May and I suddenly had this issue too. I never had it for the 16 months I owned it back here in Singapore. And when I got back after my 2 weeks trip, the problem never occurred at all again.
I'm guessing that it has to do with either the temperature or humidity levels.

I agree with you. I think it has to do with humidity specifically because it happens only when I just left from the bathroom (taking a shower) and there is a vapor, then the touch gets crazy!

Iv'e only had it a few times in about 16 months. But, it's very dry here in Vegas wih very low humidity!
I've had this issue from day one with the nexus one. For me atleast it triggers everytime I have the phone plugged in and I'm using the phone at a 90 degree angle, like sideways in bed, very strange.

+1, always happens to me!
But never happened in other conditions.
This happens on mine too, but if the problem is the humidity, so why lock the screen and unlock it solves?

Were there any bears around? It could be the bears.
southern china. occurs occasionally also. yet not so often these days. more often when charging. it seems that temperature matters alot, not sure about humidity.

For me, solves only for a short time. If conditions stay the same the touch gets crazy again.

I have similar problems as mentioned irregularly, but sometimes switching the screen off and on doesn't fix it at all. It's not very humid where I live (except when it's raining). Has anyone else considered replacing the digitizer (the touchscreen panel) of the phone, and if this would fix the problem?

thanks all
I sent my N1 back to HTC for warranty repair because of this issue. They did something and sent it back saying all good now. The issue occurs less frequently now but it is there.
I suspect there is something in the trackball area that generates EMF of certain qualities (frequency?) and it interferes with the screen circuitry due to poor shielding and close proximiy.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
this is definitely a design flaw of N1, the touchscreen controller chip just SUCKS
I've noticed that the screen responsiveness varies. Sometimes it takes a few touches before it responds other times it responds as expected.
Assume it's user error so are there any tricks/hints when using the N7? Not using a screen protector
+1 on this question.
Not sure if the varying screen response it me (user error) or the N7 itself.
Is anyone else having this problem? Or, as the OP asked, do you have any tricks/hints to share?
It looks like this happens to a bunch of people. It happens to me frequently and I usually just lock the device, pick it up and then unlock it being careful I don't have any fingers on the screen before I hit the button.
I'm not sure if it's a defect or not. Some say it is. I would tend to think so too.
There's another thread on this topic, there I asked this same question.
Do you have a screen protector installed?
If not perhaps you're in a region/area with high electrostatic or humidity, moisture..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
No offense, but I doubt the electrostatic or humid environment idea since it seems to be solved instantly by turning the screen off and back on.
I have this problem with a screen protector installed. I may remove it and try without it, but I've never had issues with XO Skins before and don't really want to trash a $20 screen protector.
I have this problem without a screen protector on

I've notices laggy screen response on my 1 day old N7. I'm contemplating doing a factory restore/wipe.
I don't have a screen protector but it definitely lacks touch responsiveness.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I have had to on occasion press twice on buttons when the first press doesn't register as well. I've seen that other thread about playing games heating up the tegra chipset affecting screen responsiveness severely, but in my case this is from light usage.
Mine has been pretty responsive so far without any issue. Just got it yesterday.
I've started to notice this issue today for sure. I thought it was my imagination before as I had only gotten it in games but today I got it in tapatalk as well. Thinking about trying for a replacement. I had gotten mine at Walmart so I guess I could go through them for exchange...

I got my 1st one at Wal-Mart too, so I went back there yesterday to get a 2nd one to compare.
It seems to me that I'm not experiencing the lag as often on the 2nd one (I don't play any potentially resource-draining games, so I notice the lag more when I'm reading something and trying to scroll up or down).
I have started to wonder though if, in my case, maybe it's happening because I haven't installed a screen protector yet. I have one on my KFire and don't have the lag/sensitivity problem. So I figure I'll get one installed on my N7 soon and hopefully that'll cure this for me...
I noticed this the last 2-3 days. However, it seems to be only in Chrome browser. I never close my browser, and towards the end of the day, I'll unlock the tab, go into chrome, and I'll have to hit everything twice...keyboard included. I just completely close it out and start it back up, and it's fine again for another day. So it's not a problem for me.
Just had it again and while it was happening I went ahead and enabled the Dev option to show presses and it definitely requires a harder press to respond over time. I believe the digitizer is at fault on this.

hey guys, does anyone have issues with the screen becoming unresponsive when warm ? I first noticed after leaving the unit on charge in the sunlight, screen up. basically the screen needs more than a touch, sometimes it doesn't respond without a firm hand. after playing with a few different kernels this is definately an issue for me. even on stock if i play a game for long enough, heat will lead to the screen becoming unresponsive ??? stock rom and kernel is where I'm at right now and the issue is still present ? any thoughts guys ?

I have the problem where the screen will become less responsive after using it for a while, but not completely unresponsive. It's hard to notice at times, I have "show touches" enabled to help me see it. Cycling the screen off then back on fixes it. I've been hoping that someone would be able to definitively say if it's an individual hardware defect or a software bug. Seems like a lot of people have this issue.
It's especially annoying when playing a touch game that requires fast, accurate inputs.

Are we 100% sure it's hardware? I find it odd locking/unlocking really quick would remedy a hardware issue.
I'm thinking the problem may be more widespread than it seems. It's easy to not notice it. I only noticed when I had problems controlling a few precision input, fast-paced games.
Lets us know if your third one does it as well.

Multitouch Visible Test
With that app, 1-finger touch is alright, no issues.2 Fingers seems alright too. Adding up to 4 fingers seems to be alright and moving them around the screen.
Sometimes with 5 fingers though, they'll all show on the program, and then immediately vanish. If I keep moving my fingers across the screen, they'll pop in and out, but won't actually stay on screen and follow. But this only happens sometimes. Other times, 5-finger input works fine.
My other camera is dead at the moment and I have to run and get batteries for it tomorrow, so I can't actually upload video of what I mean. I was hoping to get some input from other people about how their multi-touch seems to be with that app. Not entirely sure if this is just a rare defect, widespread, or working as intended maybe (not entirely sure if there's anything saying how much multi-touch this screen is; figured it was 10 though)
Some things to try:
- Use 1 finger, drag it all over the screen
- Keep adding fingers 1 by one after dragging them across the screen (add finger, drag it around, add next finger, etc.)
- Don't touch the screen for about 3 seconds, then just have all 5 fingers come in-contact with the screen, and keep them in one spot (on mine most of the time, the points appear then immediately vanish)
Could it just be the app your using?

Called up Google and it doesn't seem to be widespread (or at least the person didn't say it was), and I could get a replacement under warranty. I don't have the funds to put on hold currently so it'll have to wait if I do decide to do it.
Although I wonder if I really should, I mean I highly doubt I'm going to do anything requiring more then 2 fingers on the screen at any point (nor can I really think of anything), and aside from multitouch, everything else seems great. No dead pixels, back doesn't flex, screen is alright quality-wise.
Would be nice if some other people can try out multitouch though just to see if it really might be widespread or not though. The thing is though, it works fine sometimes, and other times it doesn't. Perhaps software might fix it in time, but I don't know. I thought I heard of the Nexus 7 having a similar issue, but I can't recall...

It seems to do the same even with the "Show touches" option enabled in Developer options (tried it on an empty homescreen).
Bump
Anyone? It only takes a minute or two at the most to test this... and the apps available to do so are free and light.
Doing the tests you described never caused anything on my tablet. But if I put my hand down on the tablet flat then put my five fingers on I get your issue. Then wait three seconds and try again and everything is fine till I put my palm back on.
Might be a badly configured palm detection algorithme? Op, do you have fat fingers? Sorry if that sounds rude

Lol, hmm, na I don't think I have fat fingers
How about fruit ninja, does that work properly? It's true that if show touches doesn't work, it's not a good sign. Unless it's a system firmware bug
1 and 2 fingers seems to work great in Fruit Ninja; 3+ randomly works or doesn't work, and when it does work it seems to cut-out at some point and then just show slashes delayed from where my finger is currently
Any idea if its hardware or software related? I have the same issue with my N10 and don't know if I should get a replacement or not.
Got mine today, same issue. Actually, that too bad since everything works fine, and i only got a minimal light bleed. I hope my replacement won't be worst regarding light bleed :/
Same issue on mine. Considering a replacement now with this and wakeup lag + battery issue (indicator not updating % at all!?)
Don't know if I wasn't lucky or just poor QA.
I'm pretty sure it is a software thing because when the problem occurs and I tab on the multitasking button twice (so it shows the multitasking menu and switches back to the app) the touchscreen acts normal again until I put more than three fingers on screen.
But if its a software problem, shouldn't it happen to on every N10 running the same Android version?
I have the same issue. If I slowly add one touch at a time, it usually works. But if I touch down 3+ fingers at once it gets very confused and bounces between zero and N touches. I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (first generation) and multitouch seems to work much better on it than the Nexus10. However, I did notice that the Nexus10 is better at distinguishing 2 very close touches than the GTab. On the Nexus10 I can have my fingers as close as 1/2 inch or so before the touches merge. On the GTab it is more like 3/4".
Hmm, kind of interesting to see that others are also having a similar issue.
I noticed that when I tried a custom ROM (latest Kernel sources + 4.2.1), the multitouch seemed to work, slightly better (the issue still occurs, just maybe not as much). Not too sure if it was placebo or what though.
I called the support and will replace mine with a new one. It might be just a software issue thats solved with an update but I don't want to risk it.
just got my replacement today, same issue (and also worst light bleed ). Third replacement on this way...
Has anyone experienced touch screen issues on Android P (Oct)? Sometimes touch responsiveness becomes laggy or unresponsive until I press the power button and then it works perfectly.
It doesn't happen often but it's enough to annoy me. It usually works perfectly so I'm not sure if it's hardware. Anyone experience the same?
Sometimes. On the other hand my phone has always had problems with ghost touches where my hand is nowhere near the screen and items are selected until I hit the power button. This was before Android P.

I don't have this issue. My PH-1 has always been spot on.
Hrm...I must be lucky I have not seen any of these problems. Even when Pie was in beta it was plenty fluid.
Apparently it's been a bit of a problem for some people. I also have issues with ghost touches. I've contacted Essential to see what can be done.
It's a shame because the phone is amazing otherwise. It doesn't happen often but perhaps once every 2-3 days? It's really strange. I'm not sure if it's due to the amount of fingerprints or some other issue. I wonder if adding a screen protector would solve it.
How often do you wipe down your screen?

Not often but maybe every couple days. I did contact essential but they are asking to make a video on it and see if cleaning the screen works. I'm still testing it further, it doesn't happen often but it happened again last night...
I bought this recently so I'm not sure if an update is causing this or something else. I'm not sure if the Oct update broke something because the days I owned it without that update it was fine but then again I only had it for a couple days before the update...
Also, I did turn if grip detection but didn't make a difference for the ghost touch.
