So, I just text from t-mo telling me that they're new network had made my phone faster, but so far I haven't noticed a difference. Anyone else get a text out notice some speed increases?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Download the SpeedTest.net app, do a couple tests and post your speeds here. I work for Tmo and we have HSPA+ at the call center (very congested cell site), and I have gotten up to almost 5Mbps download speeds there. On regular 3G I get only like 1Mbps max.
1.46/d & 1.29/u best out of three, with full signal and 3G. I ran it earlier, right after I got the text, and it wasn't nearly that fast-
Stupid question- will the data indicator say something other than 3G when on an hspa+ network?

"H" if you're on the new radio
Ok, so the 'H' just means hspa. I think whether or not it says 'H' or '3G' depends on the rom you happen to be using.

Yes, you are correct. I figure that T-Mobile made the hspa icon 3g was so that people didn't get confused between gprs, edge, and 3g. Some roms will have editted the icon so that it will show an h. It's something along those line.

Where are these networks located? I barely get 3G as is, phone constantly changing from G to E and really pissing me off.
The new radio alone will not make it show the H. I didn't get the H until I flashed CM6, now I always see it. I don't have HSPA+ around my home, but at the Tmo call center, I have seen up to 4Mbps download, and it's pretty congested there.

But yeah can't wait to have it around my house, as my Verizon DSL sucks and I'd love to have a nice backup connection.

I work and live about 10 & 20 miles north of boston, respectively. The fastest speed I've seen was 2.4mbps, and I've only seen that once. Usually I get around .5/1.2mbps with full signal.

I'm in medford and don't get anything as good as this
I can't connect to 4g even thought I live in orlando. I only can connect to 3g. I'm using the newest royalmiui. I didn't have any 4g problems untill I flashed royalthunder then I only got 3g all the times. The speedtests I do show 3g speeds. Any help is much appreciated

Try a full wipe including formatting system and boot and reflash your Rom. Also make sure that your Rom supports 4G
Sent from my HTC Glaciee using XDA Premium App
I can't format boot in the new recovery. I have done a full wipe for every rom I flashed. All 4g roms. I'm gonna do it again when I get home to see what happens
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Maybe the 4G tower is down? I'm not sure if roms have to be specially made to support HSPA+ because a) HSPA+ is the same technology as 3G so it should be backwards compatible; and b) the HSPA+ chip in the mytouch is only 14.4 mbps which is the fastest HSPA(3G) chip, not 21 which is HSPA+. I think.

check your coverage map on tmobile.com I have had the same issue and I almost started flaming rom cookers... even on cm7 I get 3g speeds. turns out the part of town I live in has low 4g coverages. Usually stock roms only have the H or H+ icon on the framework. so even when you're on 3g it shows H, even when you're on 4g it shows H. on custom roms notice you have 3 different icons. (or 4) H, 3g, EDGE, (GPRS)
H stands for 4g. mostly on custom roms this shows up when there is STRONG 4g signals
3g shows up all the time even though if a stock similar device such as another mytouch or a g2 shows H.
and edge/ gprs is self explanatory.
some roms may come with kernels that may have botched LIBS that prevent 4g connection (ie cooked roms from european phones like- desire HD etc...). get a friends phone that is similar IE a vibrant 4g, g2 or a mytouch and run speed tests using the OOKLA app on market. You will get the same results when his **** shows H and when your **** shows 3g.
Oh and they and you will be surprised at how much cell carriers lie to us about coverage
I live in North Houston and I can get full 4g speeds 2% of my usage times per month
I did this the other day with similar WHITE MYTOUCHES, one was bone STOCK no root, and one was root with cm 7- royal ginger 1.5

I live in Orlando Florida so my 4g coverage is beyond great lol. I had the galaxy s 4g and I never seen 3g on it. I kno this is a older device so 4g won't be as great as the sgs4g but it dosent mean I shouldn't pick it up at all

Call it dial-up, call it hand signals, call it morse code. If you are getting 9 down 2 up you are making 99% of t-mobile users jealous. Simple as that.
Lol... I have to drive 1.5 miles just to get cell service to make a regular cell call. Wifi calling is the only way I can use my phone.
Living in the woods at the base of a mountain kinda kills your cell reception.

Yep my speeds are 4g on the my touch even though it never says HSPA just UMTS. But on speed test my vibrant is faster not sure why.
It seems like the 4g issue is with custom roms not the stock rom. I flashd stock with root and I never seen 3g only H the whole time

Hey guys, got my nexus 4 a couple of days ago coming from a galaxy s3, and I notice that I never get h+ like I used to do on my s3,it only gets to H, and the Internet speed of course is slower than it I was on my s3, I'm spending time in the same places I spent before but the speed isn't quite as good, I asume it's because it's only getting Hspa but not hspa+, any idea of why is this happening? Thanks in advance

What ROM are you on?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Depending what ROM you're using. Certain ROMs cant distinguish the difference between H and H+ on the status bar. However, you can manually check via Settings -> About Phone for HSPA+.
I'm using the stock rom, not rooted, I checked and it says HSPA:10 never days HSPA+
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The Nexus 4 is a HSDPA+42 device so you should get similar speeds as the S3 or even better with the Nexus 4 (unless you are talking about the LTE variant on a LTE network ). I don't think the S3 in general EVER showed HSPA+ as those stock devices always showed "3G" or "4G" or "4GLTE"
What kinda difference as we talking here anyways? 10Mbps or 1Mbps? Somewhere in between?
When it's saying HSPA:10 that's only HSPA and when it's idling. When you are actively using data it will show HSPA+:15 which is HSPA+ (21Mbps or 42Mbps depending on your carrier).
The s3 was the international, I'm not from the us, and I haven't measured the speed but I feel that it takes longer to load stuff, and it never shows h+ on top, only H :s, maybe it has something to do with the band of the carrier?

Like the guy above said, check manually in about phone>status to see if you're getting H+ (when you're doing something that needs internet). Also try doing a speed test with both phones and see if the results are the same or similar.

Well I started downloading and app and it said HSPA+:15, but it's weird that it dent say it on top, either way I feel the speed is slower than it was on the s3, I will test it when I get home to see what's going on... But it is DEFINETELY not faster

Hi,
Before messing with my Nexus 4 (running rooted stock 4.2.2 with Franco Kernel M1), is there a way or a specific app to check for LTE signal in my area?
Thanks!

There is no app I know of that can test for a signal your phone isn't set to receive, you'd have to set it up for LTE first. And if you don't live in one of the 7 major cities T-Mobile just turned LTE on in or in Canada then you don't have LTE you can use anyways.
With Verizon you can check for their list of LTE coverage and find out if its in the area and go from there. Its almost everywhere now but back in the Thunderbolt days lots of people did that.
A quick Google search would get you started.

Verizon's current LTE network isn't compatible with this phone. They eventually will build out their existing LTE network using AWS but that is a long way off and it still most likely won't work with the Nexus.

I guess I will have to do some testing. I live nearby the T-Mobile HQ , still not officially covered by LTE but I saw an article by OpenSignal stating that there was some LTE activity nearby...

Open Signal is a crowd sourcing app and relies upon user input to give data about available towers and unfortunately no one in my city has used the app so there isn't any tower data available. So not really sure if it can give useful info as to if a tower has LTE, HSPA+ or whatever else may be around. If you live near T-Mo's Headquarters it may be worthwhile doing the LTE fix just to check as it can always be reversed.
Flash the. 33 radio set up apn and go into phone information choose network type lte and run speed test
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
FYI just because you are in one of the launch markets doesn't mean every tower has live LTE yet so if by have everything set up and you're not getting LTE doesn't mean you did it wrong.

Simple question. Sometimes my phone says 4G and it seems at that time the data speeds are slow and sometimes it says 4G LTE and the speeds are normal. So my question is what are the differences? The reason why I ask is because I don't move around and the signal keeps changing between the two both with full signals.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I believe when it says 4g it is referring to hspa, which is technically 4g but not as fast as LTE. It all depends which kind of carrier your ROM is for. On the international ROM '4g' refers to LTE and on my Fido GS4 it just says LTE. I might not have clearly answered your question but I hope I shed some light to it. Try doing speed tests to gauge which one is which.

Lte is faster as you already know. 4g is att way disquising hspa+. Which is like 3g. I think you live in an area with weak lte coverage is why its switching back and forth.
Ah that explains it. I did not know 4G meant 3g on att but it makes sense now. I just think I need a new sim card.
