[q] App_backup question - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After flashing a new ROM, can't seem to get the apps back the way it was prior to flashing. I have TB but am curious to know if the app_backup folder can be uploaded to dropbox, and copied back after the new ROM is flashed?
Is there a way to save the current home screen from one ROM to another?

[Q] switching between android roms

I did search. honestly. so im pretty sure that many people are annoyed when they see a new version of their current rom show, thus having to upgrade again loosing all their setting, apps, etc. personally, i've tried using titanium backup from mdeejay's rEVOlution 2.0 to 2.2 but it said that my apps could not be restored. so what would be the best way to painlessly switch android roms? sorry if a similar thread exists, but i'm pretty sure it doesn't..
1. this Thread should be in the "HD2 Android Q&A" Sub-Forum
2. There are many post's out there! Look into the build-threads!
(but i'm in a good mood) so...
3. ...here is my answer:
a) Data.img:
you can copy your old Data.img file into the new rom (Android-Folder) before
booting it. But use with caution, maybe the settings in the data.img are
incompatible with your new rom. (in that case - delete it and use the orig. data.img)
b) Titanium Backup:
- be sure that your Backup is the made with the same TB Version like the
one you trying to restore with.
(restoring from V 2.x.x to V 3.x.x does not work for me.)
- Use the Busy-Box offered by TB (Problems?-button) to prevent error's
- And be careful with restoring the settings! Maybe they are not compatible!
4. I suggest to rename the old rom folder to "Android_old" and
leaving it on the SD-Card for a while.
In case of problems you can rename your folders "Android">"Android_new"
and "Android_old">"Android". So you have the Option to play around with
Backup-settings and creating new one's.
Good luck!
first of all, thanks for the promt response. and secondly, i've already tried everything you've mentioned! when i used my old data.img, android booted normally. however, i had none of my apps, nor my settings. and i double checked my titanium version. it's the same as the one in the new rom. oh, and i started this thread because none of the given solutions would solve my silly little problem....
This sound's more like a problem with the revolution-build.
I don't had a problem like this with other Mdeejay-builds
(never testet revolution) and Mattc-builds
My data.img from a desire-build had worked in desire-hd-build.
But i'd switched back to the original Data.img to prevent possible failure.
Normally moving app's with TB works fine, settings are more
problematic.
But you have a very special problem.
Sorry, i cant't help .
I suggest to ask your question in revolution-thread:

You don't have to restore the app with tb, maybe try downloading the apps then restoring the data separately

You cant realy save anything but your apps. The builds can be different enough between versions that a clean install is the only way to guarantee that you have success. I keep Titanium back up apk on my card and the folder it makes as well. I dont loose my apps and only use it to back up and restore apps. You need to re-do all other settings as they can carry issues from one build to another. Some things will back up, others wont, its part of the trade off. When you change builds, most of the time its so different, its like changing phones, you just cant transfer everything.

[Q] Clockwork Recoveries

Since I have been updating my Rom's very frequently lately, I have been doing a lot of CWM backup's. My question to you all is, at what point should I start deleting some of these recoveries?
They take up a lot of space, so keep at least two and delete the rest or the latest one. It doesn't matter really which you keep.

Can you tell from the backup's name what are its contents? If not, then you should start renaming them so the name makes sense
I suggest that you either keep the ones that are important for you, or copy them to PC and rename them in some way that you'll be able to tell what's in the backup. You can always copy back from the PC whatever backup/rom you're missing in your phone. After having once my SD card fubared (grrrrrr), I started copying once in a while to PC some backups anyway...
If you're making backups from nightly to nightly builds etc, then probably you can keep the latest that was working properly, or ones that have different roms etc.
Thanks. Will do

[Q] backup question

so i know how to do a backup of my apps (usually using super manager). but everytime i install a new rom or an update to a rom, i have to go through the process or putting all my icons back up where they belong. what is everyone doing for backup to simplify this process so i can flash a new version of a rom and still maintain my home screen

I wish I had an answer cuz I do the same but with tibu. I also utilize the backup settings in the launcher I use. Tedious process, but unless there's an easier way and someone chimes in, its what I have to do.
There seems to be a way to integrate Titanium Backup, though I find it easier to just set it all back up. It doesn't really take that long using the Market (Playnugget) on my laptop and just send them all. Check out the last few pages in Notorius's thread on Neutrino. Erebus was talking about it.

[Q] Best way to use (Titanium)Backup

Hey guys,
I am currently trying out some ROMs and for that I wanna know how to restore my apps/data the quickest way. Got TitaniumBackup Pro and I tried to create a update.zip with my wanted apps for which I don't want to backup the data manually but instantly when I startup the new ROM. But the .zip install failed in TWRP after I flashed the ROM and GApps. Or is the update.zip not what I want for that?
But even when I recover the backup for some apps, some of them still kinda need some extra work like LightFlow or SwiftKey and the Facebook Messenger App. For example some of them need notification settings changed etc. Is there any way to avoid doing that every time?
Also, I know there was some change in the backup directory from 4.2 to 4.3 in TB where you have to change to legacy or something but why do I still have to do that when switching between 4.3 ROMs? Or can I fix that by deleting all my backup and doing another backup so it will be in the new "right" directory?

Question about a new ROM & Nandroid back up

hello everyone.
i have a question in my mind. At the moment, i am using Freedom OS 1.8. What happens if i take a "backup" over TWRP, and then flash a new ROM & restore my back up.
Will i end up with Freedom OS 1.8 again? or i will have new ROM (lets say Nolimits 3.7) and all my apps, videos, pictures?
I ask it, because i want to change my ROM, but i do not want to install every app from the beginning or i do not want to change settings of each application from the beginning. I do not know it is possible or not.
Sorry if it is a noobie question.
Thanks.

yes you'll end up with the image of your old rom.
Pictures video and music, ''non-oos files/app'', will remain on the internal storage no matter what rom you'll use. ( do not do a twrp internal wipe)
I,m pretty sure there's a ton of way to put a new rom and get back your stuff (app, app data, sms, etc)., but I'm still using the old way : titanium back up.

First of all, thanks for your reply.
So before getting to a new ROM, you first take a "titanum back up of your 'non OOS' data'", and flash new ROM without an internal storage wipe & restore your titanium back up? by the way, is this called a "dirty flash"? will i have any problem in my new ROM with that?
Actually, i have a similar application "super backup", but i just used it for backing up my contacts & sms. it also has a app back up option. but never used it.
