[Q] Any app to prevent some apps to get internet connection? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any app that I can use to prevent some apps to get internet connection? either wifi or 3g? I checked here and found about DroidWall? does it work? for example, I'd like to block just WhatsApp sometimes to get internet while other apps still have connection...is that possible? thanks!

DroidWall, LBE Privacy Guard, and Avast all have a firewall to keep apps offline.
They work most of the time, but right after you boot your phone there's a brief period (couple of seconds) where blocked apps can go online if they start before your firewall wakes up.

I personally use the avast firewall. Nice list of apps given here. Just my two cents. Avast also allows you to specify which type of connection an app can use. For example, wifi only or 3g or none. don't know about the others.

The others do the same thing, but avast goes one step further.
Avast splits 3G into 3G on your home network and 3G when roaming.

One question, I've heard IceCreamSandwich prevents previously defined apps to get wifi or 3G, is that right? thanks!

Sorry, I was saying that if ICS includes some kind of feature to prevent apps to get 3g, for example, configure it to allow just some apps to get 3g data?

data usage monitor app - for each app??

Hi
Is there any app that can be used as monitoring the data usage of each application?
On example how many kb using mail app, google talk, google maps etc...
So, per application data usage
Thank you
There was a thread asking the same question a while back and it seems the answer is no
I'd post a link but I'm still a newbie
I would like such a app myself - but as a workaround you can dial *#*#4636#*#* , click "battery protocol" (or something like that, my phone is in german...), in the first dropdown "network usage" and then click on the apps and it will tell you how many bytes the program sent/received.
Nice one, that let me see what it was that was using up so much data.
i have an ap called 1013 in this list, but when I click it, I get an error..
does anybody know what this could be?
because its bar is completely filled!!
there's also a bar for media, thats quite high, any ideas what this could be?
because I haven't used any music photo or movie app since I've stopped charging..
3G Watchdog can help
i have been use it for a month... so far so good

Or use the Spare Parts app which essentially does this but in a more user friendly way
I've been using software called Network Statistics. It does exactly what your asking but with a few quirks. It doesn't differentiate WiFi from mobile data so I had to reset the counter when switching from one to the other. The only way I've found to reset the counter is to pull out the battery.
That said, it helped me pinpoint fairly quickly what background app was ripping through my data allowance (foursquare).
It seems the author no longer supports it, but it's still available for 50p. http://www.appstorehq.com/networkstatistics-android-174793/app/buy

This seems to be able to monitor battery and CPU by app but not network use by app? Or am I missing that somewhere?

I just discovered : TrafficStats
http: androidapplications.com/105333-network-trafficstats-lite
It does the trick for me,
/barfly...
I've been searching for similar apps as well (light weight)
Found another option...
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.ir.apptrafficfree
Seems to use built in data monitored by the os, for ver 2.2 onwards only though.
Cheers

You need root for: eNETraffic
For what I can tell it only records 3G traffic
And it has the option to block internet access per application only on 3G (when on WiFi everyone allowed, on 3G some blocked)
Dan.
I use 'My Data Manager', it shows usaage by app and also by 3g and Wifi and has several months of data backed up.
There's a free version with ads and a paid one without.
See:
http://bit.ly/s86P3V
Or just falsh one of ICS roms. They've built in data usage monitor with limits, monitoring for each app and other cool stuff.
eNETraffic has new update that includes wifi. Works great. Do need root.

Apps to control data

Hi. I just started using mobile internet but my telco only give me 250MB per month. What apps do you recommend that can control the data usage? For starters I've been using android firewall to block some apps from using my data. But I would like to know more apps. And how do I block the system update OTA from using my data to check for updates?
Why not just turn off the data radio until you actually need it?

i have been using macrodroid to turn off data when screen off(and other things). But you can do this a number of ways, through settings, and long pressing on the tile in quick settings will bring up a screen to turn off mobile data to

Try This.
CALL TIMER CONTROL PRO

Just use Greenify. Best app and has really good response. If you try this you'll never go back. It hibernates lots of apps and stops them from draining batt/data in the background remember to disable notifications in the background for all internet-related apps.
Greenify also works for ALL apps. Just add it to the grenify list.
It's the only app you're gonna need and is gonna solve your problem.
Also in settings, set the Data usage limit so you don't exceed it. Good luck

wifi trick

Hi guys
I've a few applications that really want Wi-Fi to function. I want to trick them while on 3G.
Can this be done?
On iPhone you've a great app on cydia which is fixed in 1 minute.
Android should be easier right?

in all apps that need internet i didn't see any request to connect just wifi and not working on data!!!
IF an app ask for just wifi and thr s no setting inside it to change... SO uninstall that **** and use another app
all apps in android have setting to choose internet over wifi or 3g or both
:good:

Selectively disabling Mobile Data

How can I selectively disable Mobile Data for Apps (Just like in iOS) ?
The complete disabling of "background data" doesn't suit my purpose.
Settings, data usage, cellular data toggle
That's one way.

If you don't mind installing another application. I would recommend MobiWol. Just turn on the VPN and select the apps that you do not want using any Cellular data.

Thanks I shall try that out. Is that a VPN to trust or just a local Android VPN? The App's ratings are just around 3.x.

It is not a VPN, they are just enabling a firewall and sending all traffic thru the firewall. If you look there FAQ's you can see that information on why they did that. Its because this way you dont have to rely on root to enable firewall
I use NetGuard to disable mobile data on selective apps.

That's cool as well. But doing it individually for hundreds of installed apps are a chore. Wish there was a centralized place and global policy (just like the other apps mentioned above) to manage.

exactly...
It's better to use what is already in MM.
I use it for an app and it's working well.
It was built in since Kit Kat, maybe before that.

How to use the new VPN thing lol

So, I use Nord VPN premium. How can I use it in the android settings instead of the app?
In the WiFi settings you have a VPN section, set noordvpn as default and always on.

Is it fast? because I've tried free app versions of VPN and whenever I try to watch or download something it's to slow
I use NordVPN as well. Speeds are usually very good. Only faster one I've used is IPVanish, but it's based in the US and doesn't have access to things like Netflix. But speed for that one are off the charts if you just want a VPN service that's rapid.
I been using TorGuard for almost 2years now and it works great even speeds for me when I am on 4G LTE so I don't complain.
I even set up my OnePlus 6T to block connections without VPN because I do not want it online without being connected to a vpn.
I've used Adguard for years, never had a problem.

That app if for connecting to the Tor Network. Definitely not the same as a VPN. Please do your research before recommending things like Tor to people as it has its own security considerations to deal with.
