[Q] Just Rooted, Installed Acer Recovery Installer, Now what? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi all!
I have an Iconia a500 and it was bone stock until an hour ago.
Been looking into this for a few hours now and I've successfully rooted using the Simple Method. Started looking into custom recoveries and found out some info about Acer Recovery Installer. At this point I'm lost. It gives me the option to install:
"CWM rev 1.3.4 by thor2002 ro (for ICS Bootloader)"
"CWM rev 1.7 by thor2002 ro (for ICS Bootloader)"
"TWRP 2.1.1 by Team Win"
"TWRP 2.1.3 by Team Win'
"Stock 4.0.3 Recovery"
My bootloader version is 0.03.12-ICS
I read somewhere about needing a new bootloader for ICS?
I have a Galaxy S2 and I'm more familiar with CWM than TWRP. I just don't know which version to use for the a500.
All I want to do is overclock for better performance so hopefully there is a kernel I can flash with my stock rom.
I'm also seeing a lot of threads in this forum of stuck booting so it's intimidating for me to do this but I'm giving it a shot.

you need the patched bootloader to flash cwm, once that's done u r able to use acer recovery installer. civ's manu,al nvfash works best there's a guide in my sig

Can't update to ICS.

I am running Thors v96 ICS ROM right now, and had clockworkMOD recovery. So I decided I don't care about root or a locked bootloader. I already downloaded the leaked ICS ROM the official one with the locked bootloader and all. So I renamed it to update.zip and put it in my MicroSD root, but when I press power on and volume up I go to ClockworkMod automatically, and I heard that you shouldn't install the update from their as you might get SOD. So I installed the stock bootloader from the Acer Recovery Installer app. And now when I press power up and volume up all I get is an error message that looks like this !.
It's not volume up but volume down, jakob95
Check through your PC (in properties of your compressed file) that the name of your leak is effectively 'update.zip' and not 'update.zip.zip'. That's an usual mistake that many people do.
But it should update from Thor's v96 ICS Rom right? Will it be glitchy though if I update from a custom ROM?

You get the SOD from the unlocked boot loader.. you can install from CWM but you will get an error of some sort saying ant install recovery but when you reboot it will install the Acer recovery.. long story short you can use CWM and not get SOD.. that comes from modified boot that you will not have.

Yes but I don't want to redownload the whole thing all over again for the unlocked bootloader version. My internet is really slow. Anyways I hope someone can reply to my comment and help me out before.
If I just install this one with CWM, and I get the SOD can I restore to my old ROM with my backup with CWM then?
No, you will have the locked bootloader... It will get rid of CWM and put Acer recovery back on there. You can't then use Acer recovery as you need root access and you can't get root access easily with the locked bootloader...
Locked bootloader=no CWM...
Seems like a lot of stuffing around to me when the actual OTA release should be soon... This is only a beta release....
Just go into the development section and download flexreapers latest build. You won't be sorry and you will still have root.

Exactly. Flash one of the ICS based ROMs in the dev forum, don't bother with the stock ICS leak itself and you'll save yourself the trouble of losing root.

I have successful to upgrade my iconia a500 with flexreaper ics rom 8beta2, and all working well except pes2012 and jelly defender don't work at all, and the camcorder still in 3gp format, not mp4 format like the last honeycomb 3.2 that's make me sad

There is a solution to all of this. Update to the stock update zip in CWM, root using ICS Root then flash a patched bootloader, kernel and CWM. Final result: ICS 4.0.3 rooted with an unlocked bootloader, CWM and kernel with /system rw remount functionality & no SOD:
http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=350 for ICS Root tool and instructions
http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=369 for the bootloader unlock, CWM & custom kernel.
Ensure that when rooting you tick the option to remove the stock recovery reflash if you want CWM.
micro usb not work
Good afternoon, I have an acer Iconia A500 but the micro sd is defective, can I install ics 4.0 via usb pen?
thank you

Return to Stock help needed

Will this work?
Currently on HC boot loader and flexreaper ics.
1. Use Acer recovery to load stock HC 3.1
2. Use Acer recovery to load stock recovery.
3. Ota update to ice or flash update.zip
i choose full system restore since i backed up the stock system in CWM before flash custom rom. after a full system restore i simply open up the acer recovery app and choose to flash back stock acer recovery then unroot.
Oh yeah, forgot I had cwm backup of rooted 3.2. Will that work?
if it's your original stock system, it would definitely work. there is nothing better to OTA to ICS with with your original stock system. but you definitely needed to get into acer recovery installer to flash back to acer stock recovery. some said there is no need to unroot and it would OTA fine but i unroot it any way. better to be safe.
I had already done 3.2 ota before rooting using timmydeans method.
Bummer. MD5 mismatch on my first nandroid
At this point with a corrupted back up, i think your only option would be to go back to square one and try out stock rom to see if they would let you update.
if you are familiar with APX mode and nvflash. you could download the EUU from vache to get back to HC 3.01. See if acer would let you update at 3.01, if no then you could try to flash Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2(US) or the Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1(other country) stock rom via the good old method of update.zip. first link is vache thread with acer stock rom. second link is the guide to flash euu and wipe all the data (so back up all stuff and download the EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1 from vache's thread and follow the guide on second link. Don't forget to replace the UID with your own UID after extract the EUU file. if you have no idea what i am talking about, i would say DON'T DO the EUU.

I'm also wondering how to return to stock without root as well. Anyone come to a consensus yet?

Hi cris8599, for what you said, I think you already update your tab with OTA, it's that right?
Can you tell me how do you unroot your iconia? did you had any problem while updating?

yes, been updated to OTA ICS since April 28th to rom Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1. 3.01's unroot is easy simply click GingerBreak and choose unroot. i am not sure if 3.1's iconiaroot-1.3 is easy as gingerbreak.

From yr tabs ext.sd card with stock update.zip from vaches thread or buggy Chinese rom
An EUU via PC from same thread
Timmydeans v4, EUU based hc 3.2.1 gen2, full stock, rooted, cwm
The EUU can be used on either boot loader, not sure if same goes for update.zip
I had thor v14.2 and thor touch recovery 1.7 on my a500. Read whole bunch of threads regarding return to stock, unlocked bootloader, and corrupted recovery stuff but couldn't find the exact steps of how to upgrade to stock ICS.
Anyway, here is what worked for me:
1) on thor v14.2, download/install acer recovery installer
2) install stock recovery
3) factory reset (I didn't care about backups)
4) download HC 3.2 (Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2) from -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
5) copy update.zip to microSD
6) vol- + power to enter recovery and flash update.zip
7) now a500 is back to stock
8) OTA update multiple times from 3.2 to 3.2.1
9) install Acer Update Enhancement
10) OTA update to 4.0.3 US version (Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1)
After getting ICS US version, I found that only four languages are supported now. So I downloaded EU version (Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1) from -
http://vache-android.com/v1/index.php?site=files&file=151
and flash it over. Now I have my language on a500 and it runs pretty smoothly.
I used acer recovery to install stock 3.1 HC Rom with Root. Installed stock recovery, then applied update.zip to get to ICS 4.0.3
K try reflash

[Q] Acer A500 rooted do I need ICS Unlocked Bootloader? Descriptive info inside.

Iconia has been rooted for awhile now. But after installing custom Kernel and Rom on my Galaxy S2, I want to do it for my A500.
Prep work that is already done.
Rooted
Acer Recovery Installer v3.03 downloaded and bought.
Installed CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro (for ICS Bootloader) via Acer Recovery Installer
Mind you I have rebooted since the Acer Recovery Installer installed.
My main question is in two parts.
1. Do I need to perform the ICS Unlocked Bootloader with what I have?
2. If yes to above. Is there an automated APP for this? Or. What would be the best guide you would recommend? I have found many and would like to follow the best guide I can.

Yes you will flashing the patched bootloader will also flash a custom recovery...
Being stock you can use the tool 'afterOTA' in the dev thread, to complete the flash...but apxFlash by blackthund3r will work just as well and civ's manual nvFlash...step-by-step guides are in my sig

You need the unlocked bootloader to flash cwm...and no this does not count as 'rooting' or 'being rooted' that is a different process.
You will need ICSRoot by blackthund3r for root access unless you decide to flash a custom rom which is pre-rooted...

Thank you very much for your reply. I actually figured it all out last night. So, now I am running Flexreaper latest. But, odd enough for me I now have a new problem. I searched google for hours last night to no avail. I cannot install apk files (works through market), bit I cannot install through Astro or root browser light.
It would appear CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro is also no lonfer installed via Acer Recovery Installer. I have tried installing apk from downloads, system/app, external sd, it just is not working. Any idea why? I get "parse error. there is a problem parsing the package" or it tries to install and i get "X Application not installed".
Do you have any clue why this is happening and how to fix it? Same this with my galaxy s 2.

Flashed Skrilax' bootloader V8 on latest Stock ICS, no CWM and can't root!

Hi all,
I'm using the latest ICS Stock ROM on my Acer Iconia Tab A501. My build version is 4.0.3 (Acer_AV041_A501_1.023.00_WW_GEN1).
I just flashed Skrilax's unlocked bootloader V8 in order to install CWM and then Tegraowners' Jelly Bean ROM v25.
Unfortunately, although the bootloader did flash correctly, I neither have CWM installed, nor can root the tablet using ICS Root 7.1.1.
My recovery is currently a knocked out bugdroid with a red triangle above him, and ICS Root doesn't have any effect on my tablet, neither in normal mode, nor in APX mode.
Also, Acer Recovery Installer can't proceed as my tablet isn't rooted.
What can I do to get CWM installed?
Thank you in advance.

Just grab a TWRP image and flash it using fastboot.
Thanks for the advice. Could you provide me with some useful links, for a Fastboot tutorial and a valid TWRP image? I've never used Fastboot before...
By the way, is there anything I shouldn't do with TWRP that I usually do with CWM (restoration of a CWM backup for instance)?
Thank you.

I mean you installed a piece of warez (anything from thor is warez, basically), so I won't do the rest for you. You have a brain, and an internet connection. I told you everything you need to know, figure it out.

Edit: I didn't install anything from Thor just yet. I'm currently running Stock ROM. By Warez you mean illegal software?

You said you flashed Tegraowners' Jelly Bean ROM v25. Last I checked (a while back), that's thor's. And yes, by warez I mean illegal software. Thor's software is illegal. It violates the GPL.

You could try re-flashing the correct bootloader, not sure if it will work tho but no harm trying.
Failing that, use the manual nvflash method. You must have that unlocked bootloader to run any of the xda ics or jb custom roms

After boot, get your uid number. Then nvflash the unlocked bootloader.
