Hi All,
I had a question and was wondering if you guys can help. I have read all of these threads regarding the new JB update but am still not clear on many things. Maybe I'm a bit slow at picking up some of the Acronyms and lingo. My friends and I all have the Nexus 7 and we're debating whether or not to update to the new 4.1.2 JB. The reason we're hesitating is because of the following (Any answers to these questions will be GREATLY appreciated):
1. Nexus 7 has Boot Loader unlocked and rooted with 4.1.1.... Can we do an OTA update? If so, will it lock the Boot Loader and Un-Root?
2. If the the Boot Loader does get locked and un-rooted, How do I go about redoing the unlocking and rooting? I remember using the Nexus toolkit ,and have read that some people have used it on the forum, but it seems like a lot of people have Nexus 7s with aftermarket Kernals and/or Rom.
3. In any event where we don't want to update the Nexus 7 to the 4.1.2 update, is there a pro/con to this? Can I disable the pop-up message that keeps asking me to update.
Again, any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you have rooted, you usually have a custom recovery, meaning you cannot recieve OTA updates. You will have to do it manually using ADB commands, which is easy and theres a tutorial for it on XDA so have a look at it, I did the manual method and kept root etc, so no change to my device just an update.
No the bootloader will stay locked if you do it manually anyway, AND YOU KEEP ROOT!.
There are quite a few unlocked/rooted folks who didn't install a custom recovery. If the OP is one of them, he can receive and install the update without any problems(unless he changed the build prop.) Kevion, if you have a custom recovery installed, just download the update, put it on your device, and install zip from recovery.

Thanks guys! Will I be able to keep my unlocked bootloader? Please advise. Thanks!
*EDIT*
I went ahead and downloaded Voodoo OTA Root Keeper
Downloaded Clockwork Mod (I'm using Teamwin's Recovery)
Backed up root with Voodoo OTA Root Keeper
Rebooted to recovery from Clockwork Mod
Flashed OTA update manually
System updated, restored Root access in Voodoo OTA Root Keeper
waited for the system to load
Rebooted again.
Seems like the Root was restored and the device is still unlocked. Thanks for all your help!
*EDIT 2*
Seems like the File Managers I have keep Force Closing. Same with the Booster (Ram booster) app. Any ideas why? Please advise! Thanks again guys!

I would try reinstalling those apps to get them to stop force closing.
Hi iam in the same situation and think about update.what holds me back is the bootliader.I read to get some new features from 4.1.2 like better power savings etc you need the new boot loader.so does it make sense to update and keep the old unlocked boot loader?

I would just run the update. Whether you flash it via recovery or let it happen naturally through google download, some peeps have had problems with the 3.41 bootloader, but not many I don't think. Just give it a shot, and if you end up having problems there are work arounds.

I don't know about that but so far, no noticeable problems with the new update to 4.1.2. I really don't know whats new with the new version of the Bootloader but If I find something, I'll update this thread.
Goodafternoon
I have a simple question for you
I am new user Android and I have Nexus 7 with android 4.2 (original without modify)
what are the step/order for unlock my Nexus 7?
,
I have read varius threads (little confusion)
Root--->bootloader---->clockwork or bootloader--->root---->clockwork or other....
thank for all
Use the Nexus Root Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
You'll need the latest version to root 4.2 but it should be a simple enough job.

I would suggest you stay stock for a few days. Maybe a week or so as im sure there will be another update in the very near future.Once that is out my suggestion will be to do a new google image download and flash that after a full wipe..
This is how i am going to handle this new 4.2 system.. Let them work the kinks out before i start flashing something custom again...
Good Luck either way.

Hi Erica,
I was hoping you can help with a question. I am currently stock, rooted, original custom recovery, I have OTA rootkeeper installed and SuperSU v0.98 running Android 4.1.2. If i was to update via the OTA version 4.2 how would you recommend I go about it. Should I run the factory reset on the tablet, should I remove SuperSU (heard from other posts could cause an issue when upgrading) or unroot it from that application. There are so many posts with different ideas so i was hoping you may have a good solution
Thanks,
JBIRD
Hey guys, its been 2 days since i finally bought my Nexus 7 and I was wondering whether I should install the 4.1.2 update ? I am loving the Nexus 7 and I don't want any complications to arise for this update. I know this question has been answered a lot of time...so I truly apologize for this thread.
Another thing...can someone direct me to the thread where it rooting my Nexus 7 is the easiest. Would gladly appreciate all the help. Thanks
You should absolutely fill your tablet with jelly beans... As far as easy rooting, Wugfresh's nexus root tool kit is a breeze though many steer away from tool kits and recommend ADB...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Updating to 4.1.2 is OK, but I would skip 4.2.1 4.1.2 and 4.1.1 are much smoother than 4.2 and 4.2.1
As far as rooting is concerned, this is really great method, just rooted and everything worked fine:

Hey everyone, I have a nexus 4 rooted with Clockwork recovery, and I was wondering if it's possible to update to 4.3 OTA? Because the last time I updated OTA my phone bricked. Also can someone guide me to the beginner guide for making backups, I'm still relatively new to the whole rooting thing.
if you are using your phone now, then it was mever bricked. when its bricked, it makes a great doorstop, or paper weight.
yes, its possible to update to 4.3. easiest would be to flash an already rooted 4.3 stock rom. but there are other ways too, including the 4.3 factory img. no, you cant flash the ota via your recovery. anyways, before you think that you bricked your phone again, learn about the processes before doing anything else to your phone. all the information is here for you, and using google is very easy. you dont need anyone to hold your hand to do this, rspecially if you spend a little time learning.
About a year ago I was going to upgrade my nieces stock Nexus 7 wi-fi tablet on 4.4.4 but come to find out there was some bug in the OTA update that would brick the tablet. You had to jump through a bunch of hoops to update it like factory reset. Once my niece heard erase she didn't want any part of that. Fast forward to now and she got a fitbit type device and the software isn't compatible with the current version of the OS. So my question is...Is that bug fixed so I can take the OTA update now or do I still have to jump through all those hoops to do it? If I do have to jump through the hoops then how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I did update a few days ago and it was ok untill it was time of the 5.1.1 update - brick, so I downloaded nexus root toolkit to get it quickly done.
Make backup using gmail or just root using nexus tool, backup with titanium backup and update to 5.1.1 or custom without worry

Ok so I root with the tool and then flash the 5.1.1 rom or do I have to go up in order?
Go to settings, about device, updates and install all the way up to 5.1.1, it might be a few updates. If the error shows then just use toolkit to recover nexus from soft brick and that's it

Ok I used the tool and flashed the 5.1.1 stock image on it and relocked the bootloader. Now it is very laggy. Anyway to fix this?

The stock 5.1.1 image makes the Nexus 7 really laggy, even when running the ParrotMod fix found in another thread.
My recommendation would be to run Pure Nexus ROM by GtrCraft (links are in the Download section for ROM and GApps, which you need for Google App Store and services). Of course, use the Nexus Toolkit or TWRP as the easiest ways to flash.
Then, flash the ParrotMod fix by parrotgeek1 to help speed it up.
Once all done, it should be as fast as it will get and you won't have any updates or OTA updates to install. Pure Nexus ROM has SuperSU in it, so it will be rooted. Some apps will not work when rooted, so keep that in mind (mainly banking and some streaming apps).

Well I would rather not have it rooted if I can help it. I don't want my niece getting into anything a messing it up. I have read that the marshmallow pure aosp is much smoother or was that what you were talking about? Can I flash that with the nexus tool? I want to keep everything buttoned up for her.
You can use tool to flash recovery TWRP, then boot recovery copy rom aosp or slim or whatever you like, flash it and you're good to go. It'll take up to 15min.
Just read rom description and follow install instruction

Sorry for my ignorance but if I use the aosp rom I would have to keep it rooted or no? When I updated to 5.1.1 I just unlocked the BL and then flashed 5.1.1 and then relocked it. Should I have installed a recovery? I didn't think I should since I didn't want to keep it rooted.

There really isn't anything to mess up when the tablet is rooted. It mainly just gives you access to more settings and more customization.
If you are dead-set on using a non-rooted ROM, you could also use CyanogenMod, which is updated regularly.
