Grey Status Bar: Why Samsung changed it - Galaxy S III General

http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/107ihz/heres_a_picture_demonstrating_uneven_degradation/
It's getting a bit tiring looking at all the posts asking if the status bar is black again or not. Anyway here you have the explanation on why it (probably) happened

At best there might be a way to make the blue tinge a difference in brightness instead of color balance, but there will always be the problem of uneven degradation with OLED. And if you're wondering, no, it's not a problem with pentile but a problem with OLED (aka AMOLED) itself.More info:*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oled#DisadvantagesThis is why I'm complaining about the new Motorola phones still using this technology. It's suitable for lots of purposes, but NOT smartphones or other devices that commonly display the same things in certain areas of the screen. This is before I even start complaining about the other flaws OLED screens seem to have, like the grainy appearance and much slower pixel response time than Samsung's PR people would have you believe. For the moment, the ideal screen technology is IPS LCD, like the HTC One X uses, a device which is also very thin, attractive, and has much better battery life than the Galaxy Nexus despite having only a very slightly larger battery.
There you have it.

I wouldn't put too much into what that guy says. He is obviously full of crap when he says AMOLED has pixel response problems. OLED technically should have the best response times, bar none. That is one of it's advantages.

I couldn't create a quote on the xda app for some reason while creating a thread. Anyway yeah I disagree with him there but the colour decay part is right or at least visible in the previous phones

I drew the very same conclusion! Posted it over on the JB discussion thread a while back. I've seen a few phones with a brighter band appearing where the status bar usually is while playing fullscreen games (obvious where a full white screen is displayed). The grey status bar is to probably help with the degradation.

He is work for Samsung, he want to convince us why Samsung change to Grey status bar. Lol, he is spy.

I worked at Unpacked 2012 in May demonstrating the s3, before the evening show we all had a cahnce to chat to a host of designers of the phone, a issue was raised was about screenburn and general degrading of colours over time, they said that although the technology is susceptible to screenburn they had done all they can from a software side to prevent this.
As for the issue you raised, they said that they didn't feel it would become an issue in the operating life of the phone (remember they design these phones to be replaced every 12 to 48 months (maybe plus an extra 9 months on top of that). A lot of thought goes into designing these phones, and the screen is their own technology too, they know its limitations.
For this reason I am reluctant to believe that they suddenly decided to change the colour of the bar because they fear degradation, I think the grey bar just fits more nicely with the whole UI look they were going for.

Btw, I'm not trolling by making this comment but I quite like the off black/grey status bar.

I don't like the grey bar because all my wallpapers are bright at the bottom and fades to black at the top. Now there is grey part at the top now. oh well they made a fix for those of us who like it black. What would be better is a transparent bar. Like the sense one.

I like the fact the bar is separated from the screen, might just be me though. )

The bar is now grey because it matches Samsung TW colors.

Hey, if Samsung want to eliminate screen burn, Samsung can try implant transparent status bar which is more brilliant compare shtt grey bar.

Really? What other elements are grey in TW Theme?
TW has more colors than a Circus Clown on LSD.

A lot of details on settings menus are changed to grey by samsung. If you put an aosp rom (like the gnexus) side by side with the sgs3 you will notice.

I have to say the green doesn't bother me that much - but as for screen burn - sure there is some, especially on the blue colours - but let's be honest - who's going to notice the screen burn, and who's going to notice that grey bar?
My point is, after using my S1 solidly for over 2years there was minimal screen burn at the top of the screen (when testing with colours and blue especially showed the burn-in)
But did I notice that for over two years?
No
Do I care, as the status bar is pretty much always there, and when its not its moving anyway, not a solid colour?
No, I don't care
What I do care about is people complaining about a grey status bar vs a black status bar.
As for the discussion of OLED vs IPS - IPS is great on monitors, and thus when translated on phone's is nice, but only when DONE RIGHT.
OLED is thinner at base, and produces some of the best colours you will ever see on a phone, or TV.
So to answer the question/OP:
No that's false, or being extremely anal about OLED.
Your average customer (including myself, as I'm no one special) - will be frustrated with their grey status bar that doesn't fit with their black-ish phone and TW launcher.
I use zeam launcher regardless, thus the change is less apparent, but still potatoes patatoes.

Well, I've seen plenty of AOSP ROMs. I have an SII running CM10 also. I'm also pretty familiar with TW and I don't see any grey elements throughout the theme overall. I see a lot of black and color elements, but grey... not so much.
That's why I'm asking if you can point to even ONE example other than the status bar changed in JB, because if they exist, I may just be missing them, but I really don't see them.
Can you give me any specific examples?

Burn-in anyone else?

Anyone but me have this problem?
Haven't checked... and not going to do either.... as it's a non issue in normal usage (i'm seldom staring at a completely white screen just to see that the status bar area has aged the screen differently) and a "feature" of amoled technology
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
It's there on most colors! I took white cause it is easier to see on a photo but it is there all the time! I'm not retarded!
And the worst part is that the little part that is whiter is the only part that is really sharp like it used to be, while the rest of the screen never is really white and sharp but instead has an uneven yellowish color. And it is worse than I could capture on photo.
I love my phone im not trying to mock it.
I'm not even gonna check
Because if I do, I'll notice it every single time I use the phone, and it'll annoy me to death.
If you don't see it you don't have it. It's there all the time. Of course it's only in games or reading stuff that is full screen. But anything except the black status bar!
Ditto problem.

I noticed it just days before you made the post, interesting timing.
Hi All,
came across this thread when looking for a solution for SGS1.
it seems that Burn in is indeed a problem for AMOLED screens.
in my situation, I've found a burn cause by Waze (of course, any app that would leave the screen on would cause it).
sadly enough, my phone is only 6 months old and I use Waze ~30 min. a day - not much for a burn you think? wrong!
for now, I've set Waze to hide the point bar and the zoom control, but still many objects on the screen are static - including the notification bar.
does anyone has a good solution?
Same problem!
But in reality it is not a real problem..
AMOLED is still not ready for prime time, but at least Samsung is trying to improve on it with every iteration. Can't wait for 40"+ AMOLED HD TVs.
Before waranty goes off demand to change display..

Hey there, might be interesting to know on which built your phone is operating?
Mine was delivered in may w/ 2.3.3, since I'm on a 2.3.5 based rom, I got better colors / sharpness and less side effects (greenish tint)
Maybe Samsung changed the way how to control the display? (hardware drivers)
just my 2 cents..
Yes
Just changed the screen last month
Now its ok
Dunno if it will be burned again
Also dunno what caused it

Irrelevant. It's an AMOLED hardware-related thing, nothing to do with software. My screen has burn-in, your screen has/will, every screen does/will.
When somebody says their screen has none they just don't see it. Because really, all our phones one day or later will show it.
I don't use any apps that ever hide the status bar so even if I did have it, it wouldn't bother me.

Hi
My notification area is a bit darker than the rest of my screen. It's only visible when screen is white, and I can't identify any leftovers from any icons like the battery or Wifi icon.
My SGS2 is about ½ year old, and in daily use it's no problem at all, but I wonder how it will look when my SGS2 is 1 or 2 years old

Black Level Color Depth not Deep Enough ?????

Hey There..
just got my s3 a few days ago, pebble blue vietnam june batch..
Ok now there has been a lot of discussion regarding screen issues like:
1. Tints
2. Ink spots/blothces
3. Black Crush
4. Black/other color Clipping
5. Depth of Black level
I dont have problem 1... Just 2-3 tiny ink spots, so even problem 2 is negligble....i dont have problem 3 and its can be tweaked with software even if one has it..problem 4 i dont care about much...
So, my area of concern is the 5th problem, i.e when compared to an sgs2 or sgs1 , i find that the black levels are not as deep and super black as the former two phones !
Its not really noticable in normal lighting..please check the following in a very dark room or completely dark room...
Using a pure black wallpaper (attached below or use ur own true black wallpaper) , just open it in gallery, it seems extremely dark grey (almost black) and u can tell where the display meets the bezel...
well, even on sgs2 n sgs1 on pure black background, u could see a little backlight, so not perfect black, which is understandable....so here is where the main problem comes...read below..
on a sgs2 or sgs1, When there is text or icons or other stuff over a pure black backgorund, this time the blacks appear black (obviously its due to contrast difference producing the illusion of super black) and one cannot tell where the screen border ends n the bezel starts, it just blends due to the super blacks! This is what i love and want !!
However, this is not the case with my sgs3, the damned blacks still are not perfect black & i can see where the screen borders end and distinguish the bezel & the screen , they dont blend beautifully!
to experience this, in a dark room, on any brightness level, preferably test at 30% screen brightness cause thats what we normally tend to use indoors, atleast i do...
please use this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJO88Qhxwv4
(Thanks Tinderbox UK for the link)
or
play and high quality Dexter(Serial) video and see the part right before the intro theme where it says “SHOWTIME presents” (in white text) over a black blackground...
or
In youtube app when any video loads n the black screen comes with loading circle
or
use the pure black wallpaper with few icons on ur homescreen...
in the above cases, u should see pure black and u should not be able to tell where the screen n bezel borders meet..which is what u get on sgs1 n sgs2 screens..and i dont get this result on my sgs3 :-(
On sgs3, its almost black, but u can notice its very slightly gray ! so this is annoying to me since im so used to it appearing deeep black on the sgs1 n sgs2 !
--- So now what i need u guys to tell me is whether most sgs3 panels have this issue or is it just me ???
--- Will software tweaks like Supercurios upcoming “Display Expert” solve it by adding some black color depth adjustment ??
--- Should i take this to the Service Center? but prob is how will i show them the problem in a bright environment ?? and what if they tell me that the super amoled HD variant for the sgs3 is a new tech n differnt from the sgs1 n sgs2 screens and hence not as deep blacks ??
I WANT BLACK man !! i LOVED SuperAmoled cause if JET BLACK !! Help please!
this has been already experienced by many and so far none of the display experts has answered it or havent found the answer yet. in pitch dark environment the screen will look greyish black rather than pure black. i had the same on my s2 too but with a lesser margin.

hey Bala thnx fr replying, but wht im saying is tht, in ur gs3, dont u think its more grayish ?? iv listed the different conditions ...can u check n see?? im not talking about a plain pure black bckground which i agree is a lil grayish n is normal, but im talking bout black with other content on the screen....due to contrast differences n other colors from the non-black content, the black appears actual black as i had in sgs1 n sgs2, but in sgs3, it still does not Appear deep black
i dont thinks so mate, apart from the overall greyishness in full black conditions, i feel the blacks are good enough in images, video etc.
One more thing ,the feel of greyish black in pitch dark conditions may also be due to the fact that the screen border is dead black which makes us feel that the screen is not black enough. sgs2 didnt had this screen border afaik.
Are you looking at your phone the right way. You should be looking it at like this:

GT i950x screen issue, please read

Ok I picked up my new galaxy s4 today, I've owned all the galaxy s handsets and been pleased with them.
However I noticed some weird screen issue earlier, basically while scrolling dark greys on blacks smudge/smear purple.
A test for this is in settings, on anything grey if you slowly scroll up and down the grey bits go purple.
Does anyone's else phone suffer from this? I've never noticed this on previous phones, but not sure if my handset is faulty or whether it's just how the galaxy s4s are.
I know it sounds odd but I'd really appreciate if someone could test it for me, go to settings where the background is black and there are greyish bars, scroll up and down slowly and tell me if the grey bits have purple smearing/smudging.
Thanks
edit: I've added a picture and drew some arrows to point out what parts go purple/smudge when I scroll, this is just so you know what to look for. It isn't an image that shows my problem, it simply to point out what parts show the issue when I scroll
Thanks
Please report your HW Rev number at this thread and state if you do have teh smearing issue. You can do that by dialing *#12580*369# on your dialpad.

Same thing here.
So it's the issue with software right? I hope it's not intentional - given how retarded touchwiz design is, I wouldn't be shocked if it is.
Does it affect it somewhere else? Like videos or something? Or have you tried it in non stock apps? Say download poweramp, put a grey skin and try scrolling?
Thanks a lot for testing it.
Well it must just be the way it is.
I'm certain it didn't do it on the galaxy s3. I wonder if they're using a cheaper screen or something.
I was hoping it might be software related but I watched a youtube video with dark scenes and I could even see the smearing there
The more I think about it the more I'm convinced it's not a software thing, it just doesn't look right, and if you turn the brightness right down it looks even worse. And I mean really bad, honestly try turn the brightness right down and then do it.
I know some people might say "it's not a big deal" as I'm not going to spend all my time scrolling up and down in the settings menu lol, but that's just an easy test to show it. I can see smudging on dark colours in general, I'm really disappointed.

I can't unfortunately as I don't have another phone or camera to video it with.
Mine does this too. It's like the ghosting effects you get on cheap televisions with low refresh rates. Hope it's not a faulty screen, I'd imagine the wait for a replacement will be quite lengthy...

I went to a few stores to test demo units and they all do the same thing.
The s3 doesn't.

It may be the new pixel arrangement in the device. It makes whites look different colours if you look at the phone from an angle.

Samsung should fix this fast via software update, this is emberassing for a 700$ phone.
so it's for sure software related?
can anyone make a video so I can see what it's like?
I am pretty sure its the software, for the screen works perfectly when watching a vid of sth white moving on a black background. The smearing only occurs inside the os and apps. I can´t upload a vid of it atm, but I will as soon as I can.
Edit: I made a vid of it with my SGS2, the quality aint that good, but you can see the ghosting on the grey setting bars: /watch?v=iNwCuufJuLM&feature=youtu.be
It does not smear in toolbox or video because the background is not absolutely black. I am pretty shure this is an inherent amoled problem. I guess its either no absolute black level like the s3 or smearing on s4.
It seams the pixels on s4 get turned off completely on black areas of the screen and react slowly when turned on again. On s3 the pixels are never completely turned off to probably avoid this artefact. Thats why s3 blackest black is deep gray.

Titanium backup does smear... its not the software, unfortunately.

i agree with you, i've tried scrolling a page with a black background with grey text, same thing happens, its got that purple hazy ghosting issue

[Q] Galaxy S4 screen burn-in probability?

So. I'm trying to decide between the Galaxy S4 i9505 and the HTC One, and the only thing that bothers me with the S4 is the fact that AMOLED screens are capable of screen burn-in. I didn't see a single thread about S4 screen burn-in, but I know that for example the S3 had issues with screen burn-in too. I never used any smartphone except for Xperias, which always use TFT screens, so I don't have any experiences. My question is: Should I worry about screen burn-in or is it fixed? I would use the Google Edition rom which has black statusbar if that matters. Thanks in advance, ChongWiz

Hello friend, I too hate the screen burn-ins of SAMOLED screens. The screen on the S3 definitely had screen burn-ins (especially visible in dark rooms showing black images) but on my S4 I havent seen ANY screen burn ins at all. Yes the whites looks blueish and yes there is purple smear but the display still is amazing and doesnt have burn-ins :good:
Owned all versions of the galaxy series and I've never had permanent screen burn. Lots of screen on time keep most devices 2 years and no noticeable dimming either.

Thanks for the answers, now I'm sure I will get an S4 asap. Good day for everyone!
all OLED screen will burn in by design, include AMOLED, the different is just how serious, my 2 years old S2 have a little burn in at the notification bar (for the battery icon and clock area)
p.s. the blue color is the worst one, and green is the least, due to the material in use
In the video in the review below, the reviewer said that she had started to see burn-in on her S4 are only 1 month.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_APG3kLiYs
EDIT: though i have never see any burn-in on my S3 after several months, though i kept the brightness low and did not keep the screen on for an extended time with a static image.
John.

Based on what??? All Amoled screens will burn in. All... of... them... Yours will as well. Apparently not everybody sees it but it will, 100.00% sure.
It remains an awesome screen though :good:
meh, had S3 for 7 months, not a single trace of burn in (checked with RGB full screen tests). i think people who get burn do too much of same stuff, if you message all day long and nothing else, messaging interface might burn in and such.
if you are a "normal" user, who doesn't get stuck up on one particular task all the time, you'll be fine.
I actually owned the whole Galaxy Series SGS1 to now SGS4 and i never had the burn-in issue yet to date, i owned every phone about a year and sold them to got friends of mine and still if i look at their phones i can't notice burn-in at least on the SGS3 i was last week, my GNex which had AMOLED too has a bit of a burn-in but not that you may say "omg that looks awful", you really have to look very closely, i actually think in that time where burn-in gets a serious issue you have a new phone anyway.
I had horrible burn in on my Note I.
Could see the full keyboard like a shadow.
Same with the top bar. Could see the battery icon & alarm icon.
finally got it replaced (screen only).
Burn in came back though.
Screen was noticeably brighter when replaced.
What burnin looks like? Mura effect?

Its like a faint blue hue over the affected area in the begining stages of burn in which isn't noticeable unless you go into a display test app and look for it.

Mine doesn't have any major burn in just a mild blueish hue on the status bar and I've had it since launch day.

If you honestly have burn in on a device this new I wouldnt bother with any apps and head straight to Samsung and get a warranty fix.

proving Oled (amoled brand name) superior unlike what your told by mainstream media!

Your told, lcd is brighter in sunlight which is the main reason your tokd Lcd is superior or at least thay say amoled is inferior. Wrong, its because if default settings by the makers. Once rooted with proper kernel(almost every device has em) you can do with amoled what you cant do with lcd. Double the color multipliers from android default of 200 to 400. I use in order of RGB, 320/320/400 to achieve perfect white and black. Also the battery myth, lcd drains less. Thats bullcrap. Amiled black pixel achives pure black because its actually OFF. that is main reason it uses less power than lcd. Instead if going on and on I will just show u proof. I will show you picture of my LGOG(sprint optimus g) and my even aging gnex side by side in sunlight with my shadow on half the screens to show its actual sunny lol. A pic says a lot more than my Bloveating. Im using my sgs4 to post this and used its awesome camera tontake the pic if pic does not show in op I will post in first post. Have a great day peeps. Pics wouldn't attach.must be because of using phone
Pic
2 different pic styles, img and jpeg clearly shows that even with a shattered and pentile matrix amoled screen its brighter in the sunlight. Even did my shadow in it so no one would say....sun wasnt out lmao. Sorry naysayers proof is in the pudding and the gooey pudding is right in front of your face. Proper kernel with amoled is brighter and better battery saver than lcd. Lcd is backlit anyway and most high end phones will use it in the future because it can be bended and manipulated and LCD can't because it is backlit. Only low end phones will be lcd in the future.
I agree with what you've said (I use Samsung phones primarily), but it is true that when displaying white, it uses 3x as much power as an LCD. On mostly black, you're correct; very little power draw.
Tell me about AMOLED burn-in. Since you are increasing the luminosity, I would suspect that burn-in would be faster?
Keeping my eye out for this one...very interesting.
Do you guys mind if I ask what this "burn-in" is and how to fo about it?
Very interesting indeed.

Similar to plasma screen televisions, if you leave an image on the screen for a long time (much more than average), you'll see remnants of it permanently. However, if it's anything like televisions, you can fix it by displaying a white image on the screen (entirely white) for a few hours. I've never had this happen to me and ive owned almost all major Samsung phones. Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, Note 2, and now S4.

burn in
Yes burn in can occur on older like the gnex. Newer amoled is less likely but always set time out of 2 min when color multipliers are set to max. Best settings, for pure white is ,320,320,400 rgb color multipliers. Sorry should have talked about burn in,my apologies .
of course

Just remember in all aspects except maybe battery power AMOLED is superior if your rooted and have a proper kernel (there there look for em) amoled is superior and infinitely more controable then LCD, period. Sorry naysayers look at proof in sunlight

Oh yes, burn in way faster. Keep at least older amoled/oled screens at 2 min or less

black pixel is actually zero power draw the pixel is off
So how do you get this better color might I ask? You say proper kernel...any way to get it on an S3? Specifically an SGHT999?

I said mostly black. On complete black, you're right. But you're not going to be using an app that's entirely, 100% black, are you?
