this is my method. others my create threads bout it,but its mine!
1.download a vpn to your phone from the market(idc what you use)
2.turn it on (go figure)
3.turn on wifi hotspot
4. on firefox or chrome (if you arent using those, get one) download a user agent switcher.
5.switch user agent to another android device, others can work, but this way is always works
6. turn off vpn.
if you did everything correctly, you can tether still. this is how im writing this

The Vpn can be optional if you already can download a ua switcher. I only used it, cause I got blocked an that was the only way around it, that I could think of.
So here is a question. We all talk about browsers and UA.. but what about video games, MMOs, everything else that uses the internet.
Anyone have reports about those being blocked? UAs wont help there. So leads the question more.. is this block just on browsers.. or are other things effected too?

It just blocks the browser, everything else I use(sims, sdk,) including stock programs access the internet easily.
Well least thats something. Tho not sure about the VPN step. Would think you only need the UA changer then.
I do know this, T-Mobile didnt get a signed contract saying I couldnt use a tethering app.
And according to the official info in the plan details it says. "Not compatible with Smartphone Mobile Hotspot service. Data unlimited while on our 4G network."
So translation. Using the app they gave us. Not making mention to "tethering" in general. However keep in mind.. the 4G network.. alot of companies are meaning that! If you are stuck in an area with 3G or 2G signal only. That doesnt count for "Unlimited" per say. Virgin Mobile is trying to do the same. Unlimited 4G but only 2-5 GB if you use 3G network.

I've never had their app. I only use the built in from android.
Yea, other tether apps work much easier. The built in t-mobile hotspot one seems to run things differently which is why I asked if it was native android or TMOs. Cause using TMOs hotspot app, on firefox it will just stay endless loading doing nothing, IE will just direct to upsell. Then if you use other tethers, then you can just work with things without issue.
Hey don't T-Mobile watch your data usage that's how they can basically tell if somebody is tethering or if there just downloading apps, music, etc.

I found out that they monitor for extra ip addresses an mac addresses. They also packet sniff, that's unconfirmed though. Spent to much time reading around.
Hrm if its by Mac ID.. then would need to spoof. Wouldnt solve the IP thing tho.. Now thats a good question on what to do. Part of me really thinks to go back on my 10$ less 2GB plan. Least that one you are allowed to tether. Go over 2GB, slows you down.. but least you have unlimited. Will have to see how this plays out over the next couple months.

I download all my files on my phone and rarely tether
From my readings, and messing around, I have to say about 99% of me says that they packet sniff. Its not really an intrusive method as it just searches for certain strings in whatever the UA is.
But I did read about someone saying about games like MMO and PS3 XBOX, the only way around that is by using the VPN which encrypts the data so the sniffers cant read it, and if they "hack" the encrypted data to read the UA, thats a felony so i dont think they will be doing that anytime soon.
I tried following these steps on my motorola electrify m from USCC.'
But even after using the VPN "hideman" the screen still flashed with a message saying that tethering was detected and to call 611 to add this service.
If anyone has any other tips that would be awesome.

I'm using VPN and it works flawlessly.
I setup VPN on my home router. I connect to my home router using Android's native VPN. I then start Wireless Tether for Root Users and start tethering.
Works like a charm! I've been able to tether with no problems whatsoever since the VPN traffic is completely encrypted and no change in user agent is needed at all.

It's not working because you have to root the phone. You can use the Visionary app in the Market (thanks MoDaCo) to do a temp root, and then run tethering app. I haven't found the temp root to be damaging, but you're doing this at your own risk.

Anyone else had any luck with this? I can get it to run, start the network, see the SSID, etc. But I never get an IP address on my client device. Worked fine on my G2, but doesn't work on the myTouch 4G.
Nevermind, I downloaded the newest version and it works perfectly:

This thread is talking about apples and oranges.
I'd like to see the "official" froyo tether work. The Google code one will work with or without the tethering plan, as will PDANet and other apps.
Once we see the "hotspot" feature working, we can reverse the setting that enables it without T-Mo's permission.

BTW, where did you get this info? When I launch the built-in app, I see the SSID but dhcp doesn't seem to work. There's no agreement (like most other trial-ware junk like Tmo TV) - so what gives? If it's free, it certainly isn't working so far.

Just to let you know that you can use this instead of changing apn settings, i tried that and seemed to freeze, used barnacle the first time this morning and its been working flawlessly all day.
Agreed... Barnacle works perfectly.
The APN route is cleaner, but unreliable.
I also agree, I am waiting to get on my home wireless before the market will allow me to download Barnacle thanks to AT&T market filtering, but I have been running a google tethering app for the time being and it is much easier and faster to use, just not as "clean" I guess.
My Phones:
Motorola MicroTAC Elite
Nokia 7160
Nokia 6340i
Nokia 6230
Nokia 6682
HTC Tilt
HTC Fuse
HTC Tilt2 (custom ROM)
Samsung Captivate (custom ROM,rooted)
Motorola Atrix (rooted)
I'm using "wireless tether for root". How is barnacle compared to that? wpa is the only difference i noticed in their features.

Ahhh, no..... while I can't say I know this for an absolute fact, DG said he's been APN tethering the crap out of his Atrix for the past week and AT&T hasn't "caught on," or nothing. Unless and until you have not installed any anti theft application in your mobile, it is difficult to trace your lost phone.:crying:
With the help of IMEI number you can trace but less chances.
Try Mobisecurity.net when you get your lost or planning to buy a new one.
I have installed in my Samsung Galaxy mobile which enables the below features.
* Get SIM change alert along with new SIM changed number.
* Remotely lock mobile when lost or stolen
* Track mobile location
* Wipe personal data (contacts, SMS, call logs, media files) and get quick backup and restore anytime from web or via SMS.
* Remotely play siren if the mobile is lost
* Make secret spy calls to listen surrounding and sounds
* Secretly read SMS, Call Logs from new SIM changed number.
PS : Free application are not worth as compare to paid application which are secure and safe.:good:
if you have a samsung account and have signed in through your phone you can track the mobile without the need of the sim from the samsung webpage.....google it

I don't think that was what he was replying to. It obviously allows you to specifically grant access to the devices that should be getting it and not allow access to anyone that can see the SSID. Towards the bottom of the first post, it was asked if anyone knew how to create a password, to please post it. I'm pretty sure that is all he was responding to.
Prior to the Moto X, I had a Gnex, so I haven't used this app in quite some time, but when I did use it, the encryption was WEP and did funny things. Access control is just fine for me, and I'm not sure why anyone would care THAT much about SSID.
Its the SSID and the password that can't be changed. I could see why someone would want to have a password on their network. Mac address control is not very secure at all.
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk 4
I followed the instructions but when I try to connect my ipad to my phone it tells me "unable to join the network". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Played around with settings and this is what I did:
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set up Method: Auto
Wifi driver reload AND wifi driver reload 2: checked
Enable access control: check
Keep alive connection: check
Make sure MSS clamping and Routing fix are both checked. Now it runs buttery smooth and speeds are great!
This is one of the only reasons I root, I don't do roms just strictly tethering. Hope this helps someone that was in my situation as well.

It's secure enough for this purpose. Yes, they can be spoofed, and yes MAC's can be sniffed out from simple packet watching, however, an attacker would need knowledge of this to even try it, as well as the hotspot would need to be up long enough to care.
I would definitely *prefer* the ability to change SSID and password, but I'm not losing sleep over it.
After thinking and studying system files for several days I have finally came up with a solution for the users with Jio sim card. The problem that the users are facing with Jio sim card is that you are not able to hear anything as custom ROMs don't have volte(and will never have so please stop asking on every forums). So the only solution we left is using Jio4gvoice app. But Jio app redirects us to use the stock dialer and we can't hear a thing. So without wasting further time here is the solution.
Goto Settings>Developer Settings>Root>Apps only and enable it.
Now open any file manager and ask for root permissions.
Now Goto /System/ and open Build.prop
Now at the end of build.prop paste the following line
persist.ims.volte=false
Click to collapse
Now Reboot your device for the changes applied.
Now Goto play store and download Jio4gvoice app. Open the app and register yourself.
Now slide to the calls menu and you will be able to see the dialer. VIOLLA!!!!
Now dial a number and see the call connects.
For those who are not able to get jio dialer or not able to call here you need to follow this:-
Edited the build.prop properly and reboot.
Goto settings>apps>Jio4gvoice force stop it then clear data and cache of the app then goto internal storage with your file manager and enable hidden files the delete .jio4gvoice and myJiojoin files folder ,then open the app.

I don't use vo LTE but I'm sure if this does work you've made a lot of users very happy
Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk
Appreciate your post, but this is nothing new... The Jio4Gvoice app is exactly the opposite of enabling VoLTE on a ROM, it is the official Jio work around for devices that support LTE but not VoLTE, it is basically just a WiFi calling app. It didn't work on most CM based ROMs because they told the app they supported VoLTE which caused it just to pass the call to the built in dialer app, by setting the persist.ims.volte to false you are telling the app that your phone doesn't support VoLTE.
Remember that for this to work consistently you must go into developer settings and make sure to enable Cellular Data always active or when you are on WiFi you will not be able to make or receive calls. This will increase battery drain when connected to WiFi.
Not working bro. Still the calls are going from dialer only.

Well volte will not be supported on custom roms as of now and when on jio 4g app used on custom roms it redirects to stock dialer. The trick was there but no one figured it out. Atleast now you will be not annoyed with all the volte crap posts. And for data ya we have to keep the data on or wifi on for call but its not a big issue

It works in many ROMs w/o tweaks. For those that it doesn't, this trick could work.

I apologize but I have to disagree with you. I still think that we will be inundated with crap VoLTE posts
