Here you go! Ripped straight from my article: How To: Remove AT&T From Captivate.
Instructions
WARNING: I am not responsible for any bricked, messed up, ruined devices. You modify your phone at your own risk. These processes are not necessarily safe for your Samsung Captivate or any other device.
Root the Samsung Captivate
First things first. You’ll need to root your device to continue with many of the modifications listed below. For our “How to Root the Samsung Captivate” guide, click here. It’s very very easy. Even a total noobie can do it! If you have questions, post a comment and we’ll get back to you A.S.A.P. Look below if you get the idea, check out our “How to Root the Samsung Captivate” guide if you don’t.
Download Update.zip
Plug in your Captivate to your computer. When the phone notifies you that the USB has been plugged in, scroll down your notifications bar and click on “USB connected: Select to copy files to/from your computer.”
Click “Mount”
Now, you’ll probably see a popup telling you a new USB drive has been inserted, open it up on your computer. In Windows, click “Open folder to view files.”
Drag Update.zip into the Captivate USB drive (on the top level… do not navigate into folders)
Turn off the Captivate (Power Off)
Hold down the Volume Up/Down rocker and the power button until you see some action. Your phone is now booting into recovery.
Use the volume down button to scroll down to “Reinstall packages”
Click the power button to select that option
Enable App Sideloading
AT&T has some weird reservations against app sideloading. That means, AT&T Android users can not use any apps not downloaded on the Android Market. Have no fear! You can remove this restriction easily. Check below for the basic instructions, or click to go to our “Enable Captivate App Sideloading” guide.
BusyBox Installed
Samsung Captivate with root
SQL Database Manager
We suggest trying the SQLite plugin for Firefox, you can find it here.
Turn on USB debugging: Settings >> Applications >> Development
Plug in your Samsung Captivate
Open up Command Prompt on your computer (Windows: start, search, type “cmd”, right click cmd, Run as Administrator)
Type in: cd _____PATH TO ANDROID SDK FOLDER______\tools
Example: cd C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\android-sdk-windows\tools
Type in: adb shell
Type in: su
Type in: cp /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db /sdcard/settings.db
Type in: cp /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db /sdcard/settings.db.backup
Type in: exit
Type in: exit
Type in: adb pull /sdcard/settings.db %userprofile%\desktop
Leave Command Prompt open
Open SQLite Manager in Firefox by pressing Tools >> SQLite Manager
Click “Database”
Then click “Connect Database”
Navigate to “settings.db” on your Desktop
Expand the tables
Click “Secure” on the panel
Scroll down to ID 6, “install_non_market_apps”
Double click it and change “value” from 0 to 1.
Close SQLite Manager
Go back to the command prompt window, type in: adb push %userprofile%\desktop\settings.db /sdcard
Type in: adb shell
Type in: su
Type in: cp /sdcard/settings.db /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings
Type in: chmod 777 /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db
Type in: reboot
Disconnect your Captivate from your computer while your phone reboots.
Remove AT&T Bloatware Apps
Must have root and BusyBox installed before performing this process!
Open up Android Market and search/download “Titanium Backup”
Make sure your phone is not “Mounted” with USB
Open Titanium Backup
Press the Backup/Restore button
Click on each app and press un-install if you’d like to get rid of it. Do not delete apps off of this list, unless you know it is safe! This deletes these potentially forever… so be sure about things!
Delete-able:
AT&T Navigator
AT&T Radio
AT&T Maps
AT&T Music
AT&T Mobile Hotspots
Mobile Banking

Remove AT&T Market Restrictions
Market restrictions? What? You mean AT&T really censors what apps I can and cannot see on my Samsung Captivate? Yes they do. But, no problem. Android developer Andrea Baccega has developed an app called "Market Enabler" to remove the censorship by emulating the T-Mobile market on the Samsung Captivate as well as other devices. Instructions below if you've already got root access:
Download “Market Access” and install the latest version of the APK file on your Captivate.
Don't know how to install .apk files? Copy the file to your phone and then install "Apps Installer" or "Astro File Manager" from the market. It's easy! Just double click the .apk when you find it!
Close the Market down fully. If you were running the Market previously, reset the phone so it is not a running task. Or use a task killer and end the Market app.
Open up the Market Access application and go to "Backup value" in case you need to get back to the AT&T market
Then click "Providers" and find: "T-Mobile [US]"
Click and hold that option until it says "Emulate "T-Mobile" SIM?" -- click "Yes" there
You may have to Allow Market Access in Superuser Permissions
Click back to "Settings" click the checkbox next to "Emulate on boot"
All done. Now your Market is uncensored.
Remove AT&T and/or Samsung Logos on the Device
Not quite yet! Check back later. We are working with some chemistry-experts to see if we can dissolve those logos. Have you seen how sexy the Captivate is without logos? Click here to check out the video.

got everything to work... except the Swoosh
Ok heres is what happened. I started on this whole guide and got hung up somewhere in the middle. I had to use Root Manager and SQLite Editor. Got everything but the AT&T Boot Swoosh sound off. I realize that this is not the exact post for the swoosh sound, but here goes. whenever im using the /sdcard command at the end of my command, it will say that this is a read only file system. it was writing to the sd card at one point, then somehow stopped. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

you can either delete it from system/etc/PowerOn.wav
or you can install silent boot

Anyone try to remove the AT&T Address Book app yet?
I remember seeing this....and would be incredibly happy if this was possible!

22 steps to enable sideloading, and you are still using a gui editor, this can be done in 8 steps shown here on xda-developers:
/showpost.php?p=7267391&postcount=1
Also, to remove the at&t/samsung boot animation you can delete (or rename) the file /system/media/bootsamsung.qmg however this leaves the at&t white "world phone" screen on longer and then a black screen for the rest of the boot process. Haven't found anything that will edit the .qmg file (which was used on the samsung moment and the galaxy spica as well), also placing a bootanimation.zip in this folder after removing the bootsamsung.qmg does not work(although it does on the samsung moment).
not sure how i'm still a new user and can't link websites when I've been a member since 2008...

Does this mean that Titanium Backup is what you use to uninstall software? I looked at the description of it and it just said it was for creating a backup image.
OK, yeah it is. I just used it to uninstall everything.
Yes Titanium Backup can be used. I've updated the post to make things clearer... thanks for your feedback!

OK after Pressing Backup/Restore there are only 5 options in the list (apparently for backing up)
Accounts
Applications Widgets
Bluetooth Pairings
Country, Language, Time zone
Wi-Fi Access Points
Where are the applications listed to uninstall?
Not sure if this is the correct section, but I have a LGV909(GSlate Tablet) and the Xoom. How would I go about extracting some of the apks off the v909 to import on the Xoom.
Thanks,
Errrrmmm....easiest way would be ADB...but your might need root on both devices.
pretty much turn on USB Debugging. Plug in the GSlate.
adb pull /remote/file/on/device.apk C:\Where\You\Want\TheFile
turn it around to put it on the xoom
adb push C:\Where\You\Want\TheFile /remote/file/on/device.apk
If that isn't detailed enough you should probably read up on ADB, its pretty novice stuff that really needs to be known for any [email protected]
Download ES Explorer from the Market.
Launch it on your tablet and choose Menu > Manager > App Manager
Find the app you want to backup APK and long tap and hold on it and choose "Backup".
The APK backups are saved to your sdcard/backups/apps.
You can get them to the Xoom using various methods like DropBox.
I didn't know GSlate has been released.
Is this the 3d Android tablet?

Well most are /data/ or /system/data/
you can type adb shell to get to a command line on the device
cd /from/dir /to/dir - to change directories
ls - to list contents of a directory
both those should give you a general idea of where to go.
Yeah details on how you got your G-slate already. I'm curious as to how it compares with the Xoom.
I was able to extract from the xoom, but not the LG,
When I list the devices, only the Xoom comes up. I am guessing the I need a driver for the slate. .
I will try the ES explorer mentioned in the earlier post

Quick and Easy Method that, although I can't explain why it works, worked for me:
1. Download "File Station for Tablets" from the Market (it's free)
2. Wait for Install
3. Launch the App
4. Tap the Menu button at the very top right part of the screen
5. Tap "Special Folders"
6. Tap "Root Directory"
7. Double-tap "App"
8. Boom - here's all the stock apps that came with the G-Slate. Copy and paste whatever you need to the SD card, then transfer from SD card to computer/dropbox/etc.
9. Transfer apk onto your Xoom, install. DONE

Pardon my ignorance, but what does it mean to "remount the file system?"
The "system" folder has read/write permissions set according to my root explorer?... however I've just tried to rename or delete the wpa_supplicant and it doesnt work..
enter the /system folder with root explorer
and press the W/R button
and try again
enter the /system folder with root explorer
and press the W/R button

Okay, so I've finally figured out to how to remount with r/w permissions and replaced the file with the one posted here. However, now my WiFi won't turn on. The indicator that normally lights up green stays gray and there's no connection.
PLS HALP

Thanks for the suggestion and I can stop those stupid screen capture !
You don't need to uninstall it with Titanium Backup, just freeze it. I have no idea what mad scientist at Samsung thought there was the dying need to make screenshotting an ever-present feature button.

It can be done using adb.
I'm assuming that the system apps are located in /system/app/ like my phone (I don't have a tab yet, though hopefully I will soon).
If that is true then a
Code:
adb rm /system/app/screencaptureservice.apk
should remove it. I have an inkling that there might be some capital letters in there (Like I said, I dont have the tab so I cant check), if the above code gives you an error about the file not being found type
Code:
adb ls /system/app/
which will show you the list of all files in /system/app/ and change part of the first code to reflect any capital letters.
I would suggest not deleting the file but renaming it or moving it somewhere (so it can be restored afterwards. Both are done with the same command mv (short for move)
The following code would rename the file and add renamed to the beginning:
Code:
adb mv /system/app/screencaptureservice.apk /system/app/renamedscreencaptureservice.apk
Or alternatively:
Code:
adb shell
cd /system/app/
mv screencaptureservice.apk renamedscreencaptureservice.apk
Whether renaming/moving or deleting I suggest rebooting after completing the task.
This will be great for my not-so-tech parents Tab, they would be so confused by the false "screenshot" screen if they would be pressing this endlessly.
Worked great thanks, don't know why this button exists.

i already have done wp.ko method ... no profit.... it doesnt work... when i uninstall system app and reboot it come back again.... sdfix and root uninstaller is not working also........
after activating wp_mod.ko with insmod-command you have to do another command in terminal as su :
mount -o remount,rw /system
now the wp_mod.ko takes effect und you can edit /system (carefully)
after rebooting the device /system is writeprotected again and you have to renew the command

Do below steps for a permanent system write access
Do step by step very carefully. After this, install root uninstaller(Search Google play). If installed, uninstall & reinstall after this.
1 install TWRP
2 Boot into twrp
3. Select the "Mount" option on the main menu and tick system
4. Go back to the main menu and then go into the "Advanced" option. There will be a "File Manager" option
5. Navigate to the folder you saved the .ko file in and copy it (just touch the file and it will bring up the menu)
6. now navigate to /system/lib/modules and copy the file there by hitting the "select" button on the bottom right.
7. Navigate to /system/lib/modules and insure the file is there. Now touch it to bring up the menu. select "Chmod" option and enter in 644
8. reboot the device
9. Once booted fully open up Terminal emulator and type:
su
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
10. Once that's done open up a file manager app with root access and mount as r/w and navigate to /system/etc and look for the file install-recovery.sh*
11. edit the file using a text editor, adding the line insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko towards the bottom of the file
12. reboot and enjoy r/w on boot without running the command every time.

Thanks for the reply, man, but is there any tutorial I could follow those steps? I mean is there any videos or somehow? because this seems too much complicated to me, as I am still new to android world after getting addicted to Nokia mobiles..
Do games run smoothly on this phone since we're talking about moving the to SD?

Yeah, it runs smoothly epically. I didn't face any lag problems except for asphalt 8. It just lags on high graphics, but works fine for both medium and low..
Still waiting for someone to help me doing the up procedure. :/

Fist make your SD writable. Then install GL to SD.
Google for GL to SD tutorial.
Don't wait for anyone, Google is a good teacher.

Yikes, never HTC again after my experience with this phone. Buying the s5 tomorrow, hopefully I don't regret it.

What happened that changed your mind on the 816? You've always seemed like you were enjoying the phone.

Might just be bad luck for me, but my headphone jack stopped working, my sim card slot broke, and my SIM card spring broke. Also I didn't like the limited storage and awkward buttom placement.
