[Q] How to modify /system & /cache partition size?

My phone is HTC Magic 32A.
The partition detail as below:
/system: 170MB
/cache: 130MB
/data: 165MB
I want to reduce some space of /system & /cache, and add it to /data.
How to do that? How to modify the partition size?
If someone knows, please give me a step by step instruction!
Sorry about my terrible English.
Anyway, I would like to say thank you at first.
If someone knows an instruction thread, please give me the url.
Thanks!

[Q] - Issue with /dev/block/mmcblk1p25

Hi xda community,
I've an issue with my Defy. My actual Rom is the last stable MIUI 2.3.7a.
The error is that the /data partition is always in read-only.
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk1p25 on /data type ext3 (ro,relatime,errors=continue,data=ordered)
So I can't use any applications. ( lot of crash due to read only partition )
I have some errors like this one in the log :
Code:
Buffer I/O error on device mmcblk1p25, logical block 86151
lost page write due to I/O error on mmcblk1p25
I already try to re-install the rom and other roms included stock rom. And I always have this kind of error.
I have no idea on how to resolve this.
Can I move the /data to sdcard ? or use tools like fsck ? Or perhaps the defy internal memory is dead.
Thank you for help or advise.

I'm late in my answer but this topic is always open in my mind.
Yes I try this several times, The flash work. But after a little time of utilisation (with stock rom or miui or cyanogen, the error occurs again.
I think that I have bad block on internal memory, my goal is now to create a partition on sdcard and use symbolic link to this one in order to bypass the internal memory. Or an easy way is to mount /data on the sdcard.
Actually I'm not familiar with Android, but I'm very familiar with Linux. In theory it should work if I can mount the sdcard early in the boot process.
Anyone have already try this ?

Hi,
Sorry to revival your post.
I have a similar problem (details in this thread). For some reason my Defy will not mount the /dev/block/mmcblk1p25 and I guess that's the reason why after each reboot all my settings are lost.
I've already try to Fix Permissions (under Recovery Menu > Advanced), but it didn't help.
I was hoping to learn with your experience. Did you could manage to fix your problem creating a symlink or something else?
Merci.

Greetings.!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Everyone,
First of all a warm greetings to every user and developer of the Blade community.
I had a wildfire in past (Sold out). Just purchased a new Idea Blade and as a regular member of XDA I am abide by the rules and regulations of the community.
Although I will search and read all the threads and post to understand the processes of rooting and flashing Custom Roms, for which we all are here and also if possible will try to help everyone with every possible aspects but first I will request you all to guide me to learn the process.
I think I am too talkative so now I am ending my little speech here.
Thanks for your valuable time to read the topic.
Every valuable comments and help will be highly appreciated..
Regards
Shiv

Lets start with Rooting stuff. I have checked with Ask Mr Pigfish and it says my cell is a Gen2 device. I have tried Z4root app to root but it did not give any results.
However I am thinking to flash a CWM recovery first and then will flash a superuser file to get root access.
Is it the proper way to get root? Coz I have a chinese blade (I've read somewhere that Idea blade is a chinese blade variant)
First of all, welcome to our Blade forum.
Second, read this root and TPT guide

Tpt means total phone transfer. It is used to change the partition sizes and/or flash a rom. Since u already have a Gen2, u wont be using tpts much
For permanent cwm, download rom manager from Google Play and select the first option, flash clockworkmod recovery. Wait a few seconds and when asked to.confirm phone model, select ZTE Blade. Wait till the flashing is complete. Now u can.boot into recovery any time by holding down "volume down" button plus power button
If ur looking for a stock rom(no much customization, etc), the best is Swedish Snow. Fast, smooth and lightweight.
If u want a custom rom,, CyanogenMod is the obvious choice. You can either go for CyanogenMod official release 7.1 or an unofficial CyanogenMod 7.2 kang (modified CyanogenMod) . I recommend BurgerZ CyanogenMod 7.2 available on burgerz.pro
You would also be interested in ColdFusionX. A fully stable ICS rom. There's a thread on ICS roms in the Blade Android development subforum
Hii thanks quantam for your help. I have installed the latest CM7 7.2 rc3 with a sd ext partition of 1 gb and after full installation I am getting around 900 mb free internal storage with the help of a2sdx script. Now my question is that will a2sdx work with builds of ics say with CM9 or coldfusionx???

A2sdx doesn't have cm9 support I think.
However, there's a better software called s2e which has been modded to support ICS. There's a flashable zip for s2e on the first page of the ICS thread.
(PS : 900 MB?????? Or 90 MB? )

Yes I have a blade buddy.
This is possible with this
I am shocked that you guys don't know about it. Anyways give it a try. Here is the procedure which I have followed:
1.Flashed the CM7. Rc3 Zip File.
2.Flashed Gapps 28082011
Booted the device and setup. In this stage the internal memory was 136 (near about)
3. After setup again go to recovery and flash the a2dsdx file.
Reboot and check the space.
but make sure to have a Sd partition . I found 1GB more comfortable however you can test it with 512Mb.
Good luck

This is possible because a2dsdx move your internal data and dalvik cache to sd ext and now your sd ext is your rom storage...for more details go through the thread which I have mentioned. I m planning to post this mod in dev section.so that everybody can use it..

Even after all that, the total internal memory of the Blade is 512 MB. Where did the rest come from

Please read the below illustrations hope it may help you to understand the things:
WHAT IS IT??
This mod will move all Internal Memory (data) into sd-ext, "but not like data2ext", this mod will maintain the performance, because it still place dalvik-cache and system application data in Internal Memory.
HOW IT WORK??
The script will do this in the first boot:
Move Mounting Internal Memory (/data) Into /sd-ext
Mount SDCard-Ext (mmcblk0p2) partition into /data
Create dalvik-cache directory in Internal Memory data (/sd-ext), and symlink it to mmcblk0p2 (/data)
Create data directory in mmcblk0p2 (/data) And symlink it into Internal Memory data (/sd-ext)
Create symlink of app, app-private, app_s and lib_s from mmcblk0p2 (/data) to Internal memory data (/sd-ext)
Create symlink for all non-symllink of Internal Memory data (/sd-ext) into mmcblk0p2 (/data)
After Initializing Setup (First Boot), reboot the system (Just reboot, don't go into recovery), the mod will automatically do this following:
Create data_s in Internal Memory data (/sd-ext)
Move All mmcblk0p2(/data)/data/com.htc* and com.android* into Internal Memory data(/sd-ext)/data_s
Create symlink all files/directory from Internal Memory data (/sd-ext)/data_s/* into mmcblk0p2(/data)/data/ So the System Application Data still read into Internal memory, but rest Application Data will read Into SDCard.
N.B. I am not the developer of this MOD so for any question please ask the developer. I have used it and found it very useful for my blade so I have share the screenshot and information whichever I knew....

I think karthik was right. It merges sd-ext and internal memory

[Q] Resizing /system and /cache to gain space?

Hello everyone and thank you for having me on your wonderful forum. I have learned so much in such a short time by reading everything I could whether I was intending to use it or not.
I got my 16gb Nexus on Monday and immediately prepped it for ROMs, settling on CM10.1 RC2, Prior to that I had an Optimus V running CM7. On my Optimus, after flashing CM7 for the long haul I was able to move all excess /system space back into /data using terminal emulator and the fdisk command, but I followed a guide of some sort that is long lost now.
Everything is fantastic so far except one thing, there seems to be quite a lot of space reserved in the /system and /cache partitions, and I am not sure if I am able to re-partition this space back to /data or how exactly to do this.
right now /system is reading at 395.8 / 827.8 MB used, and /cache is at 68.4 / 551.7 MB. I would like to repartition 200 MB away from /system and 300-400 MB away from /cache, and put it back into /data. This will leave me some space to integrate or convert a few apps to system apps, and enough cache space to be safe (why does it need 550 MB to begin with?) and give back another half gig of storage that I paid so much to have.
I have three issues with this, one being that I can find almost no information on this topic directly mentioning the NExus 4, and any relatable information from other devices talking about device specific toolkits to do the job.
The only thread I found on XDA about this is below, and it only gave me a vague "this is not possible"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248400
The second issue is I do not recall the command switches/flags that go with the fdisk command, only that I had to use some things to set file permissions or remount the partition or some such (I know, i'm a noob, forgive me).
Lastly, I am rather confused by the multiple partitions of /data and /storage/emulated all showing a partition size of 13231.8 MB. Obviously they are all the same physical space, but I am afraid to mess with the partitions and break what I assume are a ton of symlinks that trick apps into believing there is an external SD card in play. Can any of you shed some light on this for me?

I'm not sure if you are misunderstanding or not reading my whole post, or if I am not understanding you or the situation I am posting about, so please don't take offense to this reply.
It appears to me that the /system partition is reserving 827 MB space for the ROM, and CM10.1 is only using 400 MB of it
It also appears that 552 MB is reserved for the /cache partition, and only 70 MB is being currently used.
This is ~900 MB of storage space that is reserved and unused. I would like to know if it is possible to reallocate ~500-600 MB of this back into the /data partition for user space.
Please explain to me how this space is part of the whole memory that can be used for anything.
After posting I have thought some more about it and decided to NOT mess with the partition sizes, mainly because I do not know what effect it would have if I were to flash another ROM in the future, which is almost a given when Key Lime Pie is released. However I would still like to understand what I have asked about in case I do want to do this in the future, and also just for the sake of expanding my knowledge.
I like this. The only "issue" is that if more space were ever to be reallocated to /system or /cache, it'd require wiping /data obviously. Small price to pay. 500MB isn't too small a chunk for 8GB users.

i think N4 uses FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) file system
noobdeagle said:
isnt this what they were saying was the reason for no SD card and use of MTP ?; basically if i recall correctly the nexus devices do not truly assign partitions instead there is a storage 'pool' that anything can use dynamically.
so i guess there is no partitions its just all 1 volume.

Galaxy tab 4 : is it possible to change size of /system partition ?

Hi.
My device is galaxy tab 4 7" T235 with CM rom.
The default /system partition size is 2.2GB in the 8GB total device. Maybe stock used this size maybe not, the CM needs ~0.6GB , with piko gaps 0.7GB , with basic used tools moved to /system 0.9GB. The rest 1GB+ is not used . I have 128MB in /cache but 16GB seems to be enough. There is reserved 256MB partition , which can be shrinked too.
It is possible to use parted when device is in the recovery mode. The problem is to run command :
adb shell
It is not working . When I run this command I see:
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE: library "libc.so" not found
page record for 0x400dd02c was not found (block_size=32)
I found , it is because CM rom uses stock samsung's kernel , protected for root.
If I am not wrong, there is only stock kernel for T235 and other unprotected does not exist.
Does a solution exist and I am able to resize the /system and /userdata partitions ? Could you hint me ?
