Does anyone know how to force Google Maps to show metric values for nearby items?
At the moment if I tap on a station it will show me the rough distance and stations nearby in miles. My HTC One XL is showing the distance in metric. I have set my local to English (Australia) with "Locale Select" app on the Nexus 7, but it doesn't fix the problem. Kind of stupid that the device is sold in Australia yet it doesn't come with "English (Australia)" locale to be selected.

Same issue and have posted the problem here and elsewhere with no solution . My last post was to a thread by Google Maps regarding their latest update.
Oddly, if you Navigate to one of the Local results the navigation is in km. Beats me.
I have the same issue, also I haven't got the option to select English Australian as an input language/keyboard. I can select it in Google Now though.
This could be because I unlocked flashed the stock ROM though.

Hello All,
I was just wondering if anyone has any input or has updated the google maps app for the Xperia. I hear the current version is 2.3.2 while the preload on the xperia is 2.0.someting.
What are the steps to update?
I just downloaded it straight from Google, and installed over the existing version, no problems.
The upgrade is very simple.
I just uninstalled the old google maps then installed the new version. The new version has some nice updates for favorites and street cams. I like it
I didn't uninstall the old version before installing a new one. In that way you can keep your old favorite locations.
Another question about google maps:
I use google maps with GPS. When I finish using it I exit google maps.
The next time I use google maps, it first positions me by gsm towers, not very accurately, but as best as it is possible by network - correct position.
The problem: When I switch to "use gps", it starts looking for satellites and at that time it moves my location to the last place I had gps lock which might be hundreds of kilometres away from my real location. Only when it finally finds satellites, it corrects my assumed location to the real location.
With previous versions it kept my "gsm position" until it could find the satellites.
Anyone else have experienced this with google maps? It's quite annoying...
While writing this post, I started thinking if me not uninstalling the old version before installing the new one, could be the problem...

I did a hard reset cause I messed up my X1 with too much tweaking. Now it seems to be working ok.
EDIT: Sometimes still, when it takes some time to get a fix, it shows me the wrong position while searching for sattelites. Then when it gets a fix, it jumps to the right location.
So, with the stock Touchwiz software you can not access the normal Android Settings menu for Location and by default the "Network Location" function is dissabled. I installed Open Home (which is a must for this phone imho) and now I can access the classic settings menu. I enabled Network Location then launched Google Maps. After a second or two it centered on a road in Bellevue, WA that is not too far from T-Mo headquarters, problem is I am on the East Coast of the US. I pulled the battery and reboot the phone. Upon reboot I opened Google Maps again and it quickly found my approx location correctly but then within a second or two it switched back to this phantom location in Washington state. Has anyone else experiences this? If so is this a glitch with my phone or a known issue witht he TouchWiz/Android OS? I really need this functionality in order for the phone to be useful for me. Anyone know of a fix for this?
Thanks a ton!
posted this over @ tmobile forums in your thread
same with me ,,same location ,, spent some time on the phone with a tmobile rep no go ,, so it looks like its something with the phone . I got ddms going in the SDK and found that the location mamager keeps using a cached location .If you use anycut app and make a shortcut for the phone info ,you can see the radio state and under location , it keeps switching from LAC=8e92 cid=d0a6a5( my real location) to LAC=unkown CID=unkown
Great information, thanks!
So I guess the only hope is for Samsung to release a fireware update that would include a fix for that. I hope they update to 1.6 or 2.0 at sometime in the near future. That is a real hassle.
I know but hopefuly it will be 2.0
Ah Ha! I think I have it figured out. I went to "Manage Applications" and found a program called "Network Location". I selected delete data and then went back to google maps. It found my true location and has not yet defaulted back to that phantom Washington location. I have not traveled anywhere yet though to see if it will update when I move. Give this a try and let me know if it works for you too.
I tried that ,didnt work ,found my location for a minute then went back to Washington,,
Yup, mine just reverted back too. It was good for a numbers of hours and kept updating even as I moved from place to place but then eventually it defaulted back to Bellevue. I guess I will just have to periodically dump the data until a fix is determined.
Having had my DHD for a week (very happy btw) I've now got an odd problem with Locations.
Today I've started getting a notification
"Map update required"
When I click on it tells me "To use online map services, you must have the latest version of the map. Please download an updated map and try again. Tap Download to update United Kingdom, Ireland"
Clicking download just produces "No matched map - unable to find any matching map. Please download this map manually."
I can't find either of those maps then in the list to download them, presumably because they are already installed.
If I add another map then that country appears on the update list as well.
Any ideas? Anyone seen this before.

Same symptoms here.
Newbie here,
I've had exactly the same issue. Decided to try downloading Netherlands map just as a test and that seems to have installed OK (3D buildings etc.)
Hopefully it's just an error soon to be corrected.
Hmm. Seems to have gone away all on its own after 3 or 4 hours. Maybe a non-issue after all.
Not device related but coverage issue

Hi, i've been searching the nexus forum through but haven't found any solution that would work on my tablet.
My problem is this: i bought the UK nexus 7 and am using it in the scandinavia. whenever i try to assign a voice command like "set alarm to 21:30" or "show pictures of cyanogenmod", it just does a google search and shows the results. I can't see any of the cards nor can i use any of the voice commands.
I tried switching the tablet language to english (US and UK) and install all the offline voice recognition libraries. I've also gone through the google now setup and allowed all location information etc.
In another thread it was suggested that i should get a trial of google apps for business and from there switch on the google one for my tablet, but this seems completely ridiculous (and it won't solve the fact that also the voice commands are not working).
Does anyone have a hint on what i should try next to get the commands to work and cards to show?
Works for me when it finally understands me. Settings are English US and it will play tracks, tell me the weather, search apps and set alarms from what I've tried so far.

the problem here is not that it would not understand me. the problem is that it understands completely well the sentence "set alarm at 21:30" but it does a google search of it! whatever command i try from the google voice commands list at google help center, it just does a google search. it does not set alarms, it does not show pictures of androids, it does not show me a weather card. i just get a google search result for "weather in xyz"
i find this puzzling

I'm in the UK, but as long as the device region is set to US (Settings > Language & Input), it works fine. I can say "remind me to drop a coil at 8 O'Clock tomorrow" and I get an alarm set, or "Show me pictures of black cats", and lots of kittehs come up...
You lot not downloaded the UK English pack?
That's strange, if I'm using the french command for "Open Gmail" for example, it does a google search of "open Gmail". I even tried the english sentence, and it does the same thing.
I changed my phone language, tried "Open Gmail", it does a google search and then, says Opening apps and Gmail starts !
I'm using CyanogenMod 10.1 M1
AW: Voice commands and google now cards not working in EU
You have to change the system language too.

I know that, but I don't want. Is it a bug, is there plan to correct this ? Is it a Google issue or is it CM ?

It's not a bug, it was meant like this. Google now needs that you use a us or Canadian English as the system language. I would like that there was one in French though.

Even though 'Language and Input Settings' have something to do with this, you also need to change 'ACCOUNTS AND PRIVACY' settings in Google Now settings. You need to enable 'Google location settings'. If already enabled, try also switching on 'Google Location Reporting' > 'Location Reporting' > it should be 'On for this device'. Hope this helps!
When I use Google Local to search it gives me results in miles but maps to navigate to the search Google local gave is in km.
Miles means nothing to me.
How do I change it?

I just posted the problem in a Google forum. Will post back if I get a solution or if it is a known issue.

Same here if I set language to english usa, in spanish is always meters/km
I have the same problem and I've been searching endlessly for a solution. My only theories are:
1. your region settings are determined by your Google account
2. once you setup your device (Nexus 7 in my case) you have a choice of the keyboard or language to use
3. Google in keeping with their lack of user friendliness and customer service prevent you from changing your regional settings
