Lol... yes... yes you can... es file explorer works... I personally use qloud media server... love the interface and works flawlessly! Very air video-esque if you ever used an iPhone. Mirage is also very cool too... you can shrink the window down to a corner of the screen and continue doing other things while watching movies wirelessly over 3g or wifi

i am having some trouble with es file explorer. it difficult to connect to my pc. i am going to try Qloud media server. what is the difference from the paid version and the free version??
I use es file explorer and BS player. Both have lan options and work well for streaming and moving files. It is an easy setup with windows 7.
tip..Setting up a separate user account in windows for the Nexus makes things easy.Just set up a user and give it permissions in windows and share your folders with it.Make sure you set up a password or you will not be able to log in from the nexus. It will not allow connecting if you leave the password blank.Took me an hour to learn that.
If you use ES and have no password set in windows you can just go to "LAN" then "New" and hit "Scan" it should pick up your shares, if you actually want to add a share manually and have no password set in windows then just use the user name "Administrator" and leave password empty this always works for me in any app.
As for streaming "DicePlayer" supports smb natively so no need for "ES File Explorer" it also supports DTS audio when used with a custom plugin (libffmpeg.so)
If you want movie info and posters then you can use "MovieBrowser HD for Tablet" as it supports smb, UPnP and local sources.
If you don't mind using UPnP say you already have XBMC at home then "MediaHouse UPnP / DLNA Browser" is great especially as it allows you to easily change fanart and posters.
Movie info looks pretty good in landscape with MediaHouse

BTW there is an Android version of XBMC but I don't think it yet supports hardware decoding.

since i sold my iphone to buy a desire there has only been one thing that i have missed having. and that is being able to stream video content from my pc over my home wifi network onto my phone. i did this with an app called air video on the iphone. it converted all video while streaming it so i could play my divx videos from pc onto my phone anywhere in range of my wifi network without having to convert them first.
is there anything that lets me do this for android?
Gmote 2.0 will do this for you
Be warned need to have the right player for the file extension.
i.e. cant play .avi files as android doesnt have a good player etc..
I do this using stock apps on my phone, and a simple webserver on the other end.
I've done this with relative ease...
Any modern webserver with directory browsing enabled (IIS7/Apache)
Ability to modify/add content types within the webserver
Local cache of h264 or 3gp media (i.e. streamable)
Browse to movie using any browser on your Desire and stream over WiFi
** Addition **
IIS7 (possible with Apache as well)
ICYBOX IB-NAS4220B (Any SMB/NFS/CIFS NAS Box will work)
Directory browsing enabled
Symbolic Link (Virtual Directory) to NAS box share over LAN
Browse to movie using any browser on your Desire and stream over WiFi
If you need a hand attempting this, chuck me a PM...
p.s. If you're running a windoze box, then you have IIS already.
use TVersity on your computer..and then you can just point your phone to the given IP address..save it as a bookmark in your phones browser... or shortcut

Well the best and easiest way i figured out, was making the movie folder accessible to the Network and connect to the folder through the Cifsmanager. As player I use pLayer, which is really the best player for Android.
You could always try VLC-Shares.
It does have a fair amount of setup though.

This might be dead already, but try Vplayer.
As affmalg, CifsPlayer, then browse your network files as if they were on your phone = so simple
Use Opera Unite with Stream Media add-on ... works on Windows and Linux and streams everything as flash ... work really good on my HTC Desire
http://www.plexapp.com/
I liked the look of this and downloaded the PC side of it to realise that all I wanted do was access my photos in a nice graphical interface. Upon setting up this is for movies only...
Unless someone can confirm otherwise, the android app side of it costs approx £2.99
thank you very much. i know im in the wrong place (same goal, gtab 10.1) but gmote worked beautifully. even loaded up the built in subtitles when i played with moboplayer.

Not sure if this has been recommended. I saw a gadget called Wireless Media Stick that can help you with this.

Hello,
Install a samba server on your pc.
On the mobile use cifs and local player like "arcmedia" or my favorite "moboplayer"
Simple and faster. I use it often

This might be of interest to some of you. I use DLNA to stream to my phone from my PC and NAS and also to show photos and video from my phone on my TV!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169349
I was hoping to update the guide a bit last weekend but didn't get the chance.
Right I own a lacie cinema hd (i think thats whats it called) which is like a hard drive that plugs
Into your tv. But it can also be used like a NAS drive for streaming media over my home network for example I can stream moviea to my ps3.
Just wondering if anyone knows of any decents apps or any other way I could maybe stream
Them to my phone.
it would make a great little telly at the side of my bed using the dock

Not seen anything on Android that fits that description.
Just transfer anything you want on to your sd beforehand.
Then there's always Dr. Who on BBC iPlayer!
If you have a PS3, you can use the Multimedia Server app in order to stream things. It works pretty nicely.

Transfering movies to my sd card is tiresome and annoying thats why im interested
in streaming. It would save alot of time as i have a good sized library of content from films to tv series like SOA. it would be handy to just be able to stream anything when i felt like it
And dr who lol.
Surprised there is nothing out there for android fitting the bill
On android we don't need a transcoding application running on our PC..
Visit This thread. From there instal cifs manager from the market, share a folder on your pc then mount that share on your sdcard
Stream from pc in any app that supports the format
If you guys would like a more detailed guide I could make one... a thanks or a donation towards blagus's new device wouldn't hurt

thats no different to streaming from a PC, it will work fine if your nas is sharing via cifs/smb which Im sure it would be if you don't know what im talking about
You can get even fancier and setup a vpn at your house and connect to your pc via cifs over the vpn... but ill leave that for another day
Try UPnPlay in the Android marketplace. It sees all my computers. It works great for me. You can navigate through folders on any networked device and then select an app to play the file. I've heard that ES File Explorer can work as well but I use UPnPlay all the time to stream from all my devices. It won't transcode like Air Video Server but it helps get the job done.

Second that, UPnPlay for all your streaming needs.
The problem I have is that in windows Vista and 7 I can’t share any folders not on the C: drive. I have 3 one terabyte drives. C:, E: and D:. Every time I share a non C drive it always tells me I don’t have permissions to access that share when I try to open it from another PC. The same goes for external drives. They all have the same permissions set.
I have never had problems
Streaming” from those drives.
P.S. Folder sharing should never be called streaming. It confuses the noobs.
UPnPlay sounds good im gonna try that out now I just need a decent video player that supports
Avi lol
edit: OK using Upnplay in conjunction with mobo player works flawlessly now watching bad lieutenant over
my home network quality
Thankyou for your replys
Can anyone tell me the best way to view files, video(movies),pics, music over y wifi network. I've tried various apps like upnp along with mobo player and codec add on but it only plays certain files most of my media is not accesable.
I used to use a laptop and watch everything perfectly from my pc downstairs using the windows library share if only was as easy with my xoom. when i try to acces the library the xoom see's the library but only short video content of all my video camera clips nothing is organized as is on my pc. Please help as there doesnt seem to be any info anywhere, Thanks.
Assuming your server is a Windows PC then your best bet is to share the folders your content is kept in then use ES File Explorer to access the network shares. Just opening the files will stream them over wifi for you. I use Dice Player but I'm sure other players work just as well.
(There are also other file explorers out there, I'm just advocating ES because I know it works with streaming).
I can't thank you enough as es explorer is just what i was looking for as it shows my files from my windows pc as a laptop would.
The only problem i have now is that it wont open my movie files when i go to these files i get a message 'login failure this may be caused by : -the account has no permissions, any advice would be great thanks andy.
Fofgot to mention i can play all my music , pics, and smaller vieo clips which is a lot more than before it's just the files with my movies in that i cant access without the above error message.
Yes !!
for me i use this:
- PS3 Media server on my Computer (share all media from your computer to all devices by network wifi/lan)
and i can play simultany on my play3 & Xoom
-Skifta on my Xoom (DLNA client/server) it does both
-DICE Player (play mkv 720p) only who work fine (but it's paying)
but i've used before MOBOPLAYER who work fine too but no sound in mkv
MX Video PLayer it's ok too
I still get the error message when i try to play my movies some are avi and some mkv but i dont even get as far as seeing the video file , i dont get passed opening the movie file itself, surely someone out there knows please help. Also i looked on google and apparently if you turn off the anonymous function and use a user name and password from my pc it will work but where do you find the username and password as i didnt realise i had one on my pc.
As I told someone else, plex media server plus the android app works like a dream if you have all your movies/tv shows in one spot.

This will probably be because of Windows file or share permissions. In ES File Explorer, you can edit the server properties and put in your Windows username and password. It may also require the domain field to be filled in, which if it's just a normal home PC and not connected to a domain, would be your PC's hostname.
P.S... use the thanks button
I use ES Explorer for streaming from my server while on my home network and Plex for streaming when I'm on a different network (i.e. 4G, someone elses WiFi).
Zumocast.
There is a version floating around on the xda forums that is compatible with the xoom.
Nobody here mentioned it and I don't know why.
It allows you to stream and download files from your computer over any network.
It's speed is dependant on your connection.
Best of all. It's free
Stop reading and download it.

im still trying to figure this. I run Nero media home on my server and my ps3 and n900 pick it up fine, anything on my xoom doesn't see it.
PS3 Media Server
I use PS3 Media Server and the free UPnPPlay app on my Xoom (as well as other Android devices), and RockPlayer Lite to watch the video, which works great.
PS3 MS is very configurable so I can use it to serve up videos to the TV, PS3, Xoom or other Androids at home, at varying levels of video quality, all from the one Windows box.
I use Skifta. Its free - just install on both PC and xoom. Simple config and uses your favorite player

zumacast works fine
I would second that suggestion about zumacast. It works fine on the xoom.
I use Es Explorer just add your pc like server, not able to play 1080 but 720 play really smooth

Why not just use File Manager HD it supports SMB
create a shortcut to your smb share
and install bs player or something
Thats how i do it
even though i have upnp servers in the house
Qloud is free and works over wifi and 3g/4g.....amazing program
what app do u guys use? I use vlc direct pro. Tried plex also.
Vlc used to work but for some reason it wont anymore.
Plex is way picky and the results were pixeli.
Any tips? I used to have this stream server on my pc to watch on iphone. It was called streamtome. Very easy to setup and very stable. Great for watching movies even outside your network.
Is there any similar app for android?
PS: necermind. Found an app called Emit. Runs perfect
I am using BS Player on my network and it has been working very well.
Are you running the Emit server on your PC?
I have a Samba share on my home network and have been wondering what's the best way for my Note to stream from that over WiFi... anyone know if any of the video client/server programs like Emit/VLC/Plex etc can stream directly from Samba?
I doubt it as Android doesn't natively support CIFS, but it's worth asking!
My computer is Linux with smb shares but no special app running other than that. Bs player streams the files with no issues.
ES file explorer.
Just share your folder on your PC or NAS and open the file from the Network tab on ES file explorer.

If rooted - yes: install a kernel that includes cifs support and then use play app cifsmanager to mount network shares made available on your PC. Your shares will appear as part of the local filesystem tree (under /mnt/cifs by default) so any app can then access network content.

if you want a nice "front end" to browse your library then BubbleUpnp is the go. Hook that up with the free Plex server on the pc and away you go.
Otherwise, if you just want to browse the network with a file manager, thats not hard either.

I use "Emit" to stream downloaded movies from my Windows box. I was so pleased with the free version, I bought the adfree version for less tham £3.
I have to say that this is the only video streaming app I tried so the other recommendations here may be better but I was blown away when, while being driven up the M11 at 80mph, I tethered to my ageing HTC Desire and streamed a movie from my Win7 machine back at home. (Admittedly, I only ran the movie briefly as a test, so it may glitch after some time). Also a tethered demo to some mates in the pub last night worked flawlessly.
It goes without saying that wifi streaming also works perfectly.
Another slightly different streaming use: Additional to the above Windows machine, I have an Ubuntu machine running MythTV+Apache+Mythweb which I use as my PVR (Personal Video Recorder). I found that when using the Maxthon browser on the Nexus 7, I was able to browse to the Mythweb page generated by my MythTV box and click on the "Direct Download" option of one of my recorded programs. It then offered me the option of "Download" or "Play". (It's worth noting here that neither Chrome or Firefox offered this choice - they just began downloading the recording) If I select "Play" and then select the MX Player, the recorded program begins streaming perfectly.
Hope this helps
If you're rooted you can stream for free. I'm using ES File Explorer and Dice Player. Works great for me with little setup. Just load up the samba server inside ES with you're pc's ip address and start streaming. I tried a few others but this one works the best for me. No lag when watching movies or listening to music. :good:
I tried quite a few players including MX Player before settling on BS Player. For me it seems to be the best when streaming MKVs over WiFi.
I use UPnPlay here. Basically just plugging my devices into the allshare setup I'm using between my PC and TV.
