As much as I really want the nexus 10 I'm having second thoughts... for the 500 + shipping I could get a really bomb ass tv.
I'm conflicted.
I know people on here will say go for the tab... and i really do miss having a tab since I sold my tf700... but should I get a tab since I already have a cell phone? I mean it's nice to have, but at the same time I'd really only use it when I'm traveling which isn't too often...and even then i've got my cell phone with games on it. ugh. what to do, what to do...

Well, i think it depends on how often you travel? From my point of view i'm kinda in the same boat, with the added thing of having a young boy who gets bored in the car quite quickly, I was debating if I should buy one or not for the same reasons, then thought, well I can get a holder for the car, then the boy can use it to watch Nemo over and over and over and over again! lol, or play games or do whatever.
So do I want to pay £150 ish to get a half decent DVD player for the car, or can i justify a tablet? I can justify, between me using it when traveling, the missus, and the boy, then yes its worth it.
I think you know if you want it or not, if your racking your brain trying to find a reason to buy it, you don't need it. save your money. When it comes down to it, this is gunna change the tablet market with Android, all the other makers are gunna have to react, in 6 months, with the tegra 4 chips and everything else then their will be better out their. so wait.
I'm actually thinking what do I use a tablet for that my phone doesn't do? Not much. I do game on them if I'm traveling, but I don't travel that far for more than a day or two very often. I actually had a nice gaming laptop that I gave my wife because I never really used it when traveling. lol
nexus 7 AND a tv is looking like a better option right now... or maybe just a really nice tv.
Or get a really nice tv and stream your phone screen to the tv instead.

Yeah but what can a 7" tablet offer what a mobile phone can't? Neither is as comfortable for browsing and media consumption as a print quality 10" tablet, and this is why I have no interest in 7"-ers. A phone and a 10" tab. Phone and convertible. Phone and ultrabook. Phone and desktop computer. Phone and... a slightly bigger phone? Meh.
If you're unsure, hold out, it can be a lot of money to some people. Wait at least until some solid reviews are out and make a decision.
You should only be an early adaptor if you can justify spending the cash on something you really don't need.

ya I want another tablet for sure, but the infinity kind of burned me with the horrible io performance. i will wait until i'm in a better financial place after the holidays and see what third party tablet makers put out since the nexus 10 will obviously be a big influence for them if they want to compete.

I'm still expecting Google to make a price/storage adjustment in a couple months, just like they did with the N7. Don't think I mean that the base price will drop below $399 tho.

Mmhm.. and you'll get about half the usability of a tablet. Same virtual real estate as a phone, scaled up to a big and beautiful 40". Nice.
Personally, I'm planning on both the 4 and the 10 from the Nexus line. I see the phone as a more portable substitute for the 10 if I'm not hauling my bag around, plus it's quicker to just pull out of my pocket. But if I'm on a train or otherwise waiting/chilling in one place (like on my bed or something), I'd rather I had the tablet. That's why I haven't considered a 7-inch tablet, either.

It depends on how much you use your phone. I was convinced that tablets are gimmicky and useless until I bought a galaxy note and started using it for all my media consumption, games and Web browsing. Recently I even started to get annoyed with how small my note was (desktop websites look cramped) so I pulled the trigger this week and got my first tablet.
Long story short, if you don't feel like you absolutely need a tablet (or if you really need that tv) then hold on a little bit.

I've got a 4.3" phone, a 4.7" phone, a 5.3" phone, four (count 'em, 4) 7" tablets, an 8.9 inch tablet, used to have a 10.1 (and next week I'll have a N10).
Different horses for different courses. Phone is always with me, so it gets a lot of use by default...when I'm not at home. Once I get home, it goes on the charger and unless I get a call or text, I don't use it. It's an inferior entertainment/consumption device compared to a tablet.
My 7" tablets also travel with me quite a bit, often coming to work with me, and I'll whip out my current favorite, the N7, when I'm on a longer trip by plane, train, or automobile instead of my phone. It'll move about the house or hotel room with me as, mostly for ebook reading and light surfing. Biggest benefit is much better battery life than my phone so no in-flight charging worries, and it's damned near perfect for books (and light surfing).
My 8.9/10" tablets are more for home use, and usually hang out near the couch. I'll bring one on a trip if it's for more than a few days, but it never comes to the office with me. At home though, it gets used a LOT. Besides the couch, it's my bathroom Netflix/DLNA weapon of choice, it's a better surfing and magazine experience, and in some cases a better gaming experience as well. Plus hands-down it's better for productivity tasks (documents and spreadsheets) than a phone or a 7" tablet.
So I have a use case for all my various sized Android devices, and there's no one-size-fits-all device in that collection. But if I had to cut my devices down, I'd be able to get by with just the phone and a 8.9-10" tablet. The 7" is nice, but a bit more narrow-focused (and I could probably sub my N7 out for a good Kindle or Nook eInk device, if it came to that, since it's mostly used as a reader).
got a nice 42 inch sharp aquos 120hz tv... but i still have the void that a tablet should fill. LOL I think i'll wait not only due to money reasons, but to see if a 64gb comes out, or if I really would even use one... I think a 7inch phone is what i'm holding out for one portable device i can use on the couch, the bed, or anywhere and it'll have enough screen real estate... but the nexus 10 looks oh so good. If sprint had the 7 on mobile contract i'd buy it.
Hi everyone, I've had a problem over the last year or two, habitually testing out tablets and returning them. My wife has gotten concerned that my tablet buying would beome obsessive, but I really was just looking for the right tool for me. I have finally chosen the Note 10.1 as my preferred choice thought some forum posters might want to hear my thoughts on a variety of tablets and why I chose the Note.
My use case - I'm sort of a techie, I go to a lot of meetings, I have a wicked awesome x100e thinkpad netbook that I absolutely love and that I use for casual and work, and I have a media center computer at home for watching xvids on my TV. But I've wanted a tablet for meetings and other times when pulling a laptop out would not be acceptable. I also really wanted a wacom pen for electronic notes, I seem to believe that might help keep me more organized. One last thing I wouldn't mind from a tablet is learning games to play with my daughter.
I used to have a thinkpad windows xp convertible, which was nice, but heavy and the battery died. So last year when the thinkpad android tablet came out, I jumped on it. But it didn't live up to the hype, too big, too slow, android wasnt really ready and frankly the ntrig pen on it was horrible, the battery on the pen died twice in the month I had it. Returned.
I bought a blackberry playbook, was sleek, ahead of the times, fast. But too small, not enough apps, and no wacom pen. Returned.
I bought a ipad 2, was pretty impressed with it actually. Really great selection of apps, jailbroke it and was quite excited about it, but it really wasn't suitable for notes no matter what I tried. Why doesn't this thing have a microsd port? And the Apple ecosystem is hugely frustrating. And as a techie, I can't really walk around holding an iPad, just way to emberassing I wouldn't be able to look myself in the mirror. In the end this was a great purchase as a learning tool for my daughter with lots of learning games we play with at night, but it wasn't really suitable for what I needed.
I was really eager when the note 10.1 came out, preordered it and got it in september. Fast, perfect size, speakers are awesome, and the microsd port was really appreciated! But it didn't have USB, android can be pretty quirky and Windows 8 was coming out. I had some problems with polaris office and thought to myself I have to give windows 8 a try before I commit.
So I bought the Microsoft Surface RT. This was an impulse buy, mostly cause I couldnt see it in the store and I had to know what it was like. Frankly its awesome, sleek, quick, the keyboard is amazing. But... not a lot of apps, no wacom pen, pretty much its a netbook with office, and I already have a wicked lenovo netbook, so it went back because what I really wanted was the Samsung Ativ Smart PC!
The samsung Ativ Smart Pc with windows 8 was pretty impressive. This atom cpu flies, I mean flies for office use. It was quicker at reading pdfs then any other tablet I tried including the Note 10.1. It had a wacom pen that worked well. It had a USB port and a mini-hdmi! It has windows 8, which is by far the best windows I tried. Things are so much simpler, sleeker and logical in it. The OS is a joy to use, and the best part it runs ALL of my intel x86 programs so I can load it up with virtually anything. But its still windows, so be prepared for Norton, daily updates and the usual Windows annoyances that I have come to love, this wasn't really a negative for me, but I could see how it would be for my wife. The main problems with this tablet:
1. It couldn't connect to my work wifi. Some windows 8 bug that aggravated me, I'm sure they'll fix it... eventually.
2. Its 11.6 inches, its huge and more to the point it's widescreen. The widescreen aspect ratio is too wide, hard to read a pdf, its a joke to hold this thing in portrait mode.
The Ativ Smart PC is an awesome low power windows ultrabook/tablet, but not a good tablet for occasional use when a netbook won't suffice, too big, too wide. (PS I live in canada, and in canada the ATIV Smart PC does not come with a smart pen, so I returned it, bought the american version....... and returned that).
So I rebought the Note 10.1 on a cyber sale for 449, saved myself 50 bucks from my original purchase and you know what, I'm loving it. I think Windows 8 has a bright future, but not right now. And android is getting better every day
The only cons to the Note I know of for me are:
I am missing audio recording while writing notes, snote and lecture notes can do this but they won't play and fast forward the notes like OneNote or Livescribe do, oh well.
I'd also give props to the niche area apps available on the ipad that has tons of learning games for my daughter that no other platform can rival.
Sucks that it takes so long for samsung to update, Android is finally going to have multiuser ability, and I doubt the Note 10.1 will ever see it. Oh well, wasn't really all that necessary anyways.
The note can do virtually everything I need it to do. Since I last used the Note I have come to see Polaris office is actually pretty good, and I am impressed with Astro file managers improvements. I love how dropbox works with my note, and I have a microsd 32gb card ready to hold all my work files from dropbox on it. I love being able to pull up a doc during a meeting and append, highlight and make notes, thanks polaris office for that. Right now I'm connected to an adobe connect meeting for my work through my tablet, and I'm loving it, switch windows to skype my wife on my tablet, and I marvel at how powerful this small tool is. I just bought a case for the note, I'm keeping it this time, I better or my wife is going to kill me lol.
Edit - Oh yeah, I just have to add this cause other review sites mention it. The whole "thing feels like cheap plasitc" is a bunch of bs in my view. The note is slim, light, and awesome. The screen is also bright and crystal clear.
It's hard to ignore all the hype and praise the other tablets are receiving, huh.
I mainly use my Note for drawing and having an Intuos at home, I already know Wacom is the bee's knees. But I came pretty close to buying an iPad w/ an Adonit Jot anyway just b/c everyone kept telling me and I kept reading the iPad's the greatest. But after trying the Note w/ Wacom and the palm rejection... there was no way I could pick anything else

Also made the same mistake with the TPT, but didn't bother with other tabs until the GNote was released. After the horror show that was the ThinkPad, and the poor reviews on the Note, I was afraid of it. Glad I got over it. It's been perfect since day one.
My wife has a IPAD and she wants my Note 10. No way, Jose I said. You can do so much more on the Note 10 than a IPAD. IPAD is great for reading, better than the Note 10 but that's it, Note 10 exceeds everywhere else.

As someone that certainly prefers the Note 10.1 over the ipad, i still really dont understand this statement. Some of the "techinest" people i know use ipads and its their preferred tablet of choice. Im guessing the usual will get thrown out the lack of flexibility and closed ecosystem, but ive seen some very impressive things performed on an ipad, especially when jailbroken.
I have them all and thought the Note would be impossible to beat but the Ativ may beat them all. If you are looking for note taking you can't beat OneNote and an spen

Agreed, if you could customize the ipad a bit it would be unbeatable. But no wacom pen, no microsdcard (which is embarrassing really), and just the hunk-a-junk file system and primitive ways of putting files on the thing annoy me to no end. Even jailbroken, I put a couple seasons of big bang theory on there, had to get vlc player from cydia (not in the app store). And had to install them through vlc so they weren't accessible to other programs. Little things just frustrate me about the device, and I dont get that in note 10.1. The multi window thing is pretty cool too. Not to mention philosophically I believe in Gnu/Open source, and while google isn't a saint there, they are much better then apple. I love my sleek lil note
Edit - one thing that annoys me in general about android is the file system as well. Why am I putting everything in /mnt/sdcard? And I know of no way to organize this thing. I tried making /mnt/sdcard/home and have all my personal files/directories in there, but some programs wont configure where they save so you inevitably had to go into that mess of /mnt/sdcard. Not to mention you can't keep that directory clean cause every app wants to put a directory there. I guess I just have to use the "favorites" tool in astro and just mark directories I like as favorites.
As for techies and ipads.... maybe its an age thing? Im 35 maybe that is a factor? I'm not really sure... but to give you some background I have a masters in comp sci, I work with tech, I know a lot of techies and not one has an ipad they would publicly admit too. Only people I know who have ipads are people who never really had computers or didnt know they could do cool stuff like "teleconference" or "photoshop" or "take pictures and share them" or "edit videos in premiere" or "play online games" and now that apple made this stuff popular with products like "facetime" and the "instagram app" and "draw something" they are obsessed with running around telling people like me (who don't find it all that impressive) and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I just had a conversation with someone today about how cool her iphone was cause it could send voice messages with the app called voxie! I found it hilarious that she was unable to easily send sms voice messages on her phone and needed an app for it to make it useable. Oh well, I just think their way of popularizing and "owning/stealing" things "techies" like me have been doing for a long time leaves a bad taste in some of our mouths. Might be different with different groups tho.
Don't get me wrong, they occasionally make great products, the Ipod was a work of art, and compared to the other mp3 players I had at the time it was light years ahead. The first ipod belongs in a museum, and my creative jukebox deserves to be run over by my car, if I can find it lol. It's just I don't really respect the brand, it makes me think "locked down", "over priced" and "less functional" so I will avoid it if possible

I spent two weeks with a canadian ativ, and another two weeks with an american ativ. I can say that lil atom is much faster then you might think. And the OS is a dream on tablets once you get used to it. Still... its a new-ish OS, and its got kinks. In a year or two, I think windows 8 tablets will be awesome, right now Android has so much available and working out of the box. Not to mention size wise the ativ is more of a computer, forget bringing it to bed or bringing it to meetings while holding a coffee. Its just too big. I like reading pdfs in portrait, so I can see a whole page, the widescreen ativ is unusable in portrait.... unless all my pdfs go widescreen in the near future, that aspect ratio is done. Incidentally if you use apps like bing/news, the tiling layout is awesome cause it's formatted for that screen. Unfortunately my dungeon magazine is in portrait and its much more readable on the note 10.1

Sorry, but as a long-time techie, before there were laptops and pads, my statement and sentiment about the OP's post stands. As to the techies you know- there's no accounting for some people's taste. JMO
Don't trust the people who tell you that an adonit jot pro with a capacitive screen is anywhere near the wacom stylus on this.. I used the jot pro (meh, waste of money because of the issues regarding the conductivity between the ball and the plate) with the asus transformer. Even at its best, it cannot be compared to the Note.
I agree with you absolutely. Coming from a Galaxy Tab 7.7 with a Jot Pro was an exercise of frustration. The Jot was over rated. For true note taking experience on tablet form factor, nothing beats the S-Pen.

I have always owned an ipad since the first generation. They are excellent devices and I consider myself a "techie". I am never ashamed of carrying it or my Note 10.1 because my self-esteem has this weird quirk where I just dont give damn what other people think of me because I own it. I certainly wouldn't judge someone because they owned an apple product. The whole premise is ridiculous and immature.

I tried about every stylus available with my TF101 in just about every app available. Ended up using LiveScribe instead. Happy stopped using both when I got my Note 10.1, the S-Pen and lecture notes. It simply cannot be beat and after years of trying to be paperless for meetings I have finally done it with the Note. Oh, and I love using my AllShare cast dongle with presentations. I can look at my notes, display full presentation and do markups with my S-Pen. Pretty slick. I'm sure you can do that with iPad somehow but I wouldn't consider another tablet without a wacom.
Wow, I didn't think there was anyone as "crazy" as me lol. I actually do have OCD and it takes me forever to make a decision. I've also tried and returned many phones and tablets. More so for phones. I'm never satisfied with the one I have. I just got the Note 10.1 today tho and I'm loving it! Just put on JB.
I agree with the second poster also. It is hard to ignore the hype and praise for these different tablets. You never truly know which one is going to be the best until you've tried them out. It was between the Note 10.1 or the iPad 4. I've had iPads before but for some reason I thought this one would be different. I decided on the Note 10.1 and the whole time I was waiting for it to arrive I kept thinking that maybe I should have taken the iPad but now that I have the Note I have to say I'm glad I stuck with my decision.
I'm still on part where I try the ativ before getting the 10.1, but I'm currently abroad until after christmas, so I can't try/buy yet since I haven't seen an ativ smart pc here. I've tried the note 10.1 and it feels a bit strange to me. The stylus and the screen don't have that feeling that I can draw on it like on my tablet pc. So I'll found out after christmas. I'm at a stage in my life where I don't know if I am going to replace my tablet pc with an ativ smart pc or replace my xperia play with a 3g 10.1. I may end up getting both though.
I owe a nexus 4 and also owe laptop and desktop pc. Is the nexus 10 gonna help me?
First of all I want it since in august I'll start university so it will help for books on pdf, taking notes and since I'll enter to computer sciences I expect to use it for others things that I'll reach on school.
But I don't really know what is having a tablet, maybe I can do it all with a laptop but sometimes I think watching movies, comics, books, gaming and surfing Web is enough + utilities on school for getting it.
Any advice?

I've got a beastly desktop, laptop, and a decent phone. The tablet goes with me to stores and such so I can look things up on the go, or to work (I'm a teacher) so that I can take attendance on it. Its much more mobile than a laptop while providing, with the right apps. most of the functionality.
I would wait to see what the next galaxy note tablet is going to be. You could use a bluetooth keyboard if you'd rather type your notes and use the spen if you need to jot down formulas or charts.
If you have a newer laptop, I wouldn't recommend getting a regular tablet like the nexus 10 if you want it for school.
Me personally, I have a powerful desktop with two monitors for my main bulk of school work at home. I bring a netbook to class for notes (I download the PowerPoint's and convert them to PDF. Using acrobat pro, I can type notes just like if I were writing on the print out). The netbook is a bit old and weak but gets the job done for now.
With something like the galaxy note, you can have everything consolidated on your tablet(PDFs, PowerPoint's,hand written notes, types notes, ebooks ect) all in a compact device. Then use your desktop for more productive things and you could probably sell your laptop.

Personally, I don't find tablets with (solely) capacitive touch screens to be useful for notetaking. They aren't accurate enough to take down diagrams and formulas much better than pen and paper. In fact, the best solution I've found has been using a LiveScribe pen to import those kinds of information into OneNote. On the other hand, if you've got any professors who are enamored of open-source formats like PDF, tablets are a great way to read on the go, and for that purpose I highly recommend them.
They're also great for most of what you named, but importantly tablets can go into "tighter" places. Your dorm room bed, a couch, or some other random place on campus are good candidates. If you've got a small bag, they're also one of those things you can toss in as a "just in case" if you need to do something your phone is unsuitable for, but don't want to bring your laptop for.
I'd recommend honestly looking into a Windows convertible, or, if you don't like the big M, go for an active-digitizer tablet. That basically means the Note at this point, unless you go hunting for one of Lenovo's offerings.
The Nexus 10 is a great tablet though, so buy with confidence if you feel a tablet is for you.

They're also great for most of what you named, but importantly tablets can go into "tighter" places. Your dorm room bed, a couch, or some other random place on campus are good candidates. If you've got a small bag, they're also one of those things you can toss in as a "just in case" if you need to do something your phone is unsuitable for, but don't want to bring your laptop for.

I only use my tablet around the house and it's perfect for the living room or the bed, when I don't want to carry my ultrabook with its superfluous keyboard with me. The ultrabook is pretty light, a little less than 3 lbs, but the Nexus 10 is less than half that at 1.33 lbs. I can have a nice big, high-res screen with me at all times, one that isn't as heavy as lugging my ultrabook around.
With a tablet, you too can have a computer at your fingertips at all times! :victory:
That said, I agree with Sher and Rirere that the Nexus 10 may not be the best for writing with a stylus, though I haven't tried it. I'd guess the Note 10 would be better for that, since it has a digitizer built in. I always suggest that you try these devices out in a store before buying. I don't think an Android tablet will help you in computer science classes either, as they probably don't do anything with Android, plus you'll need a stand to keep the tablet up and a bluetooth keyboard to get any serious typing done. All the other content consumption stuff you mentioned is perfect on a tablet though.
The fundamental question is whether you value having a high-res computer with you in more places, because it is more portable than a laptop but with a bigger screen than a smartphone, albeit a computer that isn't that easy to type on unless you get a bluetooth keyboard also.
I have a Nexus 10, a Kindle, a S4 and a good/average laptop, I can tell you that for what you want the Nexus is amazing, if you want to watch a movie on it you'll see how amazing the screen is, surfing the Web is great too, and Android is with some top games, so you can enjoy it easily. If you most want to read comics and books I'd recommend you a Kindle (not the tablet), which is really the best option. Nexus 4 is already a good cellphone, but there are things that after you get hands on a tablet you see how easily they can be.
About school now. Formulas and such has no better companion than pen and paper, I already played a little with a Note 10 on a store, and it's great to handwrite, but I still think that for my math counts using a paper is the best option. However about the computer classes you can use it! Search on amazon for a case with keyboard and there is one which I really like (and have), which is so good that I typed my fanfictions on it, also I used to learn java on my Xoom with an app called "Droid Edit", which is a text editor with syntax highlight, then I installed Terminal IDE and had compiler and everything ready to learn. Guess what? It worked finely !"
And at least, you can install Linux distros on it, so you can get some more things to be done! And also it works greatly .

I would try and wait till the end of summer to make your decision. Toshiba has just announced three tablets - one lower end tablet, a 2560x1600 Tegra 4 tablet and another identical one, but with a wacom digitizer. Asus has a new 2560x1600 Infinity Transformer also with a Tegra 4. HP has there x2 android tablet coming out which didn't look too bad. Most of these are due for release in Q3 of this year. And on top of it, Samsung is holding a "Galaxy and Ativ" event on the 20th. Ativ will be a Windows device and Galaxy is an android device. Besides the Galaxy camera 2, no one really knows what to expect. Hopefully a new note tablet with better resolution, cause the current resolution is a deal breaker for a lot of people.
The Nexus ten is now a good 7 months old, although will probably be better priced than all of the above. The Tegra 4 could be great, but also could be terrible. I enjoyed my Nexus 10 when I had it earlier this year, but I think there are much better options for a school tablet coming out.
Also, I believe Intel is releasing there updated Atom processor (what Netbooks and lower range windows tabs use) towards the end of the year and is supposed to have greatly improved graphics, power, and battery life. Some of the current lower end Windows tablets run full windows 8 (like the Ativ 500T and also has a wacom digitizer for about $550) and they aren't terrible, though can be a bit sluggish. There battery life is also comparable to an android tablet.
Lastly, for school, a windows tablet may be a better choice since you won't have any compatibility issues like with android browsers. If your teacher uses online problems, demos, or chat rooms, you could run into issues running these things. I'm leaning slightly more towards Windows at the moment just for those reasons, but it all depends on how these products compare. If the android tablet is much smoother and has better battery life for 2/3 of the price, I'll just wait to get home to do something not compatible.
I've been in the same boat looking for something for school and my netbook is holding me off till the new products are released. I would recommend doing the same with your laptop, unless you can't afford more than the $400 for the Nexus 10.

If you don't mind hacking it up though, the Nook HD+ looks like a fun little investment to slap somewhere (like a wall or something as a control panel). It may not make the best tablet but the hardware is good.
+1 for the people recommending paper/pencil. I can't do formulas another way. OP however might want to look into the LiveScribe Sky and a tablet (or use their PC); I believe I saw an ad somewhere showing off live, instant syncing from paper to tablet, which I'll have to look into myself (got a LiveScribe Echo as a work bonus, so I'm sticking with that for the moment).
It's not just a question of having an active digitizer; while the Note pen will wow in stores, writing with a stylus for any duration of time can quickly become, well, annoying. Glass just doesn't have the same tactile feel that a good pen on paper will, you'll get the "clicking" sounds from contact, and you could generally be doing something a lot more useful with your electronic device (like typing bullet points) than scrawling into it with a digitizer.
Unless, of course, by tablet, we're talking about a Wacom drawing pad.

Everyone will of course have their preferences, so I'm not trying to argue right or wrong. However, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ATo3ohdwok has certainly influenced me to getting something with a wacom digitizer. She has some other videos showing note taking as well. I hate having a lot of printouts with notes on them. I also don't like typing notes on a computer but then having to draw out charts and math examples on a separate piece of paper. I'd rather have a device I can carry around almost anywhere with great battery life where everything in consolidated. It's also possible to sync to dropbox so you can get the notes on your phone(in PDF, not SNOTE format). Imagine staying on campus for whatever reason and wanting to do work for a class that you didn't bring your notes or text for. You could have everything in your Note tablet to include general handwritten notes.
Also, the note tablet comes with two different tips. One plastic that will feel like super smooth writing on glass and one rubber that has some drag to it that doesn't make "clicking" noises. I would prefer real pen and paper as well mostly because its what I'm used to, but I really like the idea of consolidating everything into one device backed up to the cloud that I can get anywhere. I'm currently doing it with powerpoint notes in dropbox and typed notes in Evernote, but unless I scan or take pictures, I can't get anything I hand write somewhere else.
Edit: I just looked up the Livescribe pen. That is pretty neat. I feel like I'd lose it though. I will continue looking into that as another option.
I currently have a galaxy S4 but I have been thinking about getting a tablet for some time now and the new nexus 7 seems to be the perfect choice. The only thing is that I don't know why I would need one. The only reasons I can think of getting one are: always getting android updates immediately, bigger screen, more fun to play games or watch videos. And apparently that is not enough to convince my wife why I need one. I was hoping to get some insight on what you use your tablet for and basically to convince me that it is worth getting. Btw I have never owned a tablet. Thanks
I use mine to read, browse the Internet and watch videos. I also really didn't need a tablet when I got the 1st Nexus. But I'm glad I did. I use it every day and I barley touch my laptop now.

More portable than a laptop. Lightweight. Great for watching movies on the go (ie: plane trips, hotel rooms, kids). I use mine to browse the web, shop, watch netflix, read xda forums, pretty much anything i used to do on my phone. Go TEXANS
What I'm using it for: forums, web browsing, watching YouTube videos, reading books, reading the news, listening to music, as a map.
I've only had it for a day now and it''s the college summer holidays, so I haven't needed it for much else, but when term restarts I'll also be using AnkiDroid flashcards to revise and Timetables to manage my lessons and homework. Will probably also use it for some of the homework itself, especially in Computing.
the honest answer is, there won't be anything additional the tablet could do over the S4. actually, the S4 has a lot more bells and whistles to it than the nexus 7.
the main need factor comes in is if you spend a lot of time on your phone, your neck and eyes probably hurt. a larger screen tablet will fix this.
Mine is great for work and remote desktop. It also helps ease your phones battery. My phone is just for texting, emails, calls, and WiFi hotspots. All my surfing, playing, watching, reading, etc is on my N7.
It is a nice companion but if you don't know what to use it for, it will eventually become a desk piece.
I like to use mine for Netflix. If my woman wants to watch a show, I can watch something else. My kid does this too when we watch a movie he isn't interested in.
Lots of uses, you just gotta use it.

If you didn't have the new Nexus 7 you might wander outside. While wandering outside you might walk down to the cliffs by the beach. while standing on the edge of the cliffs at the beach a high flying duck might fall from the sky and hit you in the leg. When the duck hits you in the leg you might lose your balance and fall off the cliff into the ocean water below. While trying to stay afloat in the ocean a whale may be passing by and swallow you. Because you taste bad the whale might then spit you out of his blow hole where you might land on the beach in the middle of a pack of mating crabs which of course would rightly enrage the crabs who would then latch onto your nether regions. You could have been warm and dry snuggled up on the couch with your new Nexis 7 watching Kung Fu movies on You Tube.
Don't end up with with a raging case of crabs. Buy the new Nexus 7 and stay high and dry.
It's a great piece of ****ing hardware.

I never owned a tablet neither prior to my purchase of the Nexus 7 2013. I'm glad I did. It feels like a premium to be reading books and browsing the web on a device which is just the ideal size for me.
I'm currently using a s4 and had a iPad mini. Decided to sell the mini because it didn't allow me to download certain files but only view them. And now that I got a otg cable and use it for my s4, it made the phone into a work horse. Now ordered a nexus 7 to fit my needs. Excited for the future of android.

I tried a couple different out. First Asus transformer tf300t, was great but had ghost touch/ touch screen issues. So after reading so much about og nexus 7 I decided to try that was great but always missed the 10 inch screen, that's always been a plus about the tf300t besides it not being bad hardware other than the touch screen issues. After reading about the n7 2013 came out gave it a month to read some reviews but eventually decided to take the plunge and glad I did. Other than the minor issues been having since the last update which will more than likely be eventually be taken care of by Google or rooting otherwise I've never looked back. Don't even miss the 10 screen on the transformer. New n7 has been well worth it.
While at home, everything I used to do on my cell phone except talk on the phone and make this post, I do on my new N7

I have a Nexus 7 (2013) to replace my OG 2012 N7 (which I passed down to my sister) and a Nexus 10 that my company bought as a Christmas gift.
I use the 7 for light browsing, reading books and news, YouTube and occasional Netflix.
I use the 10 for heavy browsing, Netflix, YouTube, reading magazines/comics and occasional games.
I find the 7 more comfortable for reading books, the 10 more comfortable for watching video.
My tablets are primarily media consumption devices, my phone is a communication/social device and my laptop is all work and PC gaming in my free time since it's a pretty well spec'd piece of kit. I've managed to find different uses for all of my devices so they all have their place.
Basically, when I'm home I use my 7 for things I'd normally use my phone for when I'm not home. Also, I use my 10 for things I use to use a laptop for (such as browsing). I've got a system going that insures all my devices serve a purpose.
You just need to figure out if you have a use for a tablet and if that use can justify the cost. I love my tablets, but only because I've figured out how to utilize them in a way that fits my needs.

I was in the same situation, but ending up getting one for the family to use for general use as it's better to get out than a laptop and when guests come around they are able to use it too. But, for some reason I convinced myself just yesterday to click and collect the New Nexus 7 for myself from Currys/PC World, making an hours journey by bus so I could have it early in my hands, but the level of excitement dropped for me for some reason.

This is the first tablet I've ever purchased, I bought it about two weeks ago. I also struggled to find out why I would need one. I mean my galaxy s 3 could browse, twitter, YouTube, and run games. Why buy a tablet?
Anyways, I gave in and I'm in love. A phone can do what a tablet can but the screen and size makes it such a great experience to use when you're at home. With the app tablet talk you could use the Nexus to receive phone calls and text messages and respond to them.
You could almost say it's like having an 18" and 65" TV. Yeah, the 18" can show the same thing as the 65", but the 65" will be a much better experience.
Plus this thing is very portable. I could see myself using it at school.

I started with a Viewsonic G Tablet a few years ago. I liked the concept but it was just too damn big and I found myself using my laptop more than the tablet. I sold it and eventually bought a Coby Kyros. I liked the form factor better but hated the crappy resistive touch screen. I sold it and bought a first gen Kindle Fire. I liked it but it was a hassle to put a decent ROM on it and it felt limited even with Cyanogenmod installed. I sold it and bought the first gen Nexus 7. For the first time, I had a tablet I truly loved. I found myself using it every single day, and neglecting my laptop more and more. When the 2013 N7 was released, I jumped on it and passed my 2012 to my fiancée. The only things I've used my laptop for, in the past few weeks, were to root my tablet, download things for my tablet, and use bit torrent to download some episodes of a certain zombie show. I love this thing and really look at my phone as a secondary device for texting or doing the things I would normally do on my tablet when I don't have it with me.

Sucks about those crappy Tabs. The ViewSonic G wasn't really bad but the screen sucked and it was big. The Coby is absolutely a joke for anything other then a casual toilet companion.
The Fire was the same as the Nook for me. Really nice device but it just barely functioned on CM and was dodgy at best. My son used it for a while for just a few games and Netflix, which worked well.
Although I've dabbled with cheaper tabs, I've always personally owned iPads, Asus Transformers, N7's, etc. BIG difference between a $59 BigLot special and a $499 tablet. Although most people don't realize that.

Pretty much spot on. The G Tab was cool and all but it was really too early in the Android tablet game, for me, to get into anything like that. I remember when getting Honeycomb on it was only possible thanks to our devs here at XDA. The Coby would have been okay for a little while since I picked it up just as a cheap distraction to keep me from buying a more expensive tablet. I just couldn't get past the resistive touch screen. Once you get used to capacitive, it's pretty much impossible to go back. With the KF, I hated the lack of Bluetooth, camera, and integrated microphone. And, like you said, CM was iffy at times. The N7 is by far my favorite tablet. It's just the right size, has a beautiful screen, and performance is topnotch. I have no regrets at all. The crappy tabs really made me appreciate the N7s that much more.

All kidding aside I was like you and just didn't get "the tablet thing." Then the Asus tf201 came and they started to make sense much like your thinking. I fell in love with dang thing and found at home I had pretty much stopped using my desktop machine. But there were times when the 10"er was just to big and heavy. When this little guy came out it seemed like a good time to update and have enjoyed since taking it out of the box.
Just a little side note. I few weeks back my friend picked up my tf201 and said "why don't I have one of these?" Needless to say he owns that tablet now.

No Nexus 7 Inch etc. I have that combo... G2 and Nexus 7 and I am selling the Nexus....
Its really no use if its only you who will use it. If more ppl will have access to the tablet etc, maybe, okay.
Also depends how you gonna use it. If you want to have it lying arround at home next to your G2, no use.
If you wanna take it somewhere like on travels, trips, waiting 12 hours in an Airport. And you do not own a laptop. Okay, maybe?
But still its better go for something like N10.
The difference is really not that big that it would be an clear advantage.

I have an N7 and I love it. It's a perfect match for the G2, for me.
First off, the market clearly shows the popularity of the 7" format for tablets. After owning an N7 for a year, not only have friends/family switched from the larger iPad format, now when I see people in public using iPads they look downright awkward - kinka like they are lugging around home plate.
Second, the 7" tablet format is friendlier than the G2-sized format for reading and web browsing. Evern though the actual size difference is not as constrasting as it would be with an iPad, the actual usage patterns throughout the day are very different. It's a joy to hold and use my N7 when browsing in front of the TV or reading at bedtime. I don't reach for my G2 for this. Is this a luxury? For me it is - but I like it.
All this said, this is just MY experience. What works for you may be different, and I don't pretend to know what will work for you. Just wanted to share my 2 cents.
I have both, and use both. Really, only you know your life well enough to know how you would use your devices.
I have both and love both. I also have the Xoom and don't like the 10" size. The Nexus 7 can't really be compared to the G2 imo. The experience on the N7 is much better for just about everything.

I couldn't live without my N7 and its small enough to fit in my back jeans pocket and its always in my back pack. F iTunes I'd never buy a product that restricted me having to use iTunes or some proprietary software app to connect it to my PC.

Yep, big difference in screen size. Yep, Itunes sucks....Google Music is way better and less bloated.
I have G2 and ipad retina 10' , I don't feel like I need a smaller tablet and I have access to both app store. I'd say 80% of my friends have Iphone and ipads so I can talk to them with apple only apps like facetime and imessage.
The best thing about Nexus is portability. Back pocket ftw
