Errors while booting Rootfs.img? - Acer Iconia A500

Hey guys!
I have spent the past 2 days getting this one error and after hours of reading up and trying to get all the facts straight, I just can't figure this one out!
I have cyanogen mod 10
I have Skrillax unlocked bootloader v8
and then I have all the files necessary for Ubuntu and Bodhi. Plus recoveries.
Mostly, I have been trying to follow
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22201465&postcount=351
single post, which works great up until the point of booting! I seem to get an error that says:
"busybox: 'busybox' is not an absolute path Could not find /dev/mmcblk0p7! Dropping to a shell.
sh can't access tty; job control turned off"
(there's more after that but it doesn't seem to pertain to anything of importance that I can tell)
I just can't get over that error! I read about, but it seems like there is some dialog between other users that happened, and the conversation got changed way too fast that I couldn't understand what was going on!
If I am in the wrong area just let me know and I can move, or repost my question on a different thread. I just can't seem to find the direct answer through google, forum search, or even *shiver* Bing.
Thanks for the views, thanks for the help (if you can!).

The odd one out!
Looks like you are one of the unlucky owners of A500 with a different file system than most A500. You will probably only be able to use the external card method for now. If some one compiles a new Kernel (recovery) then you will be able to use internel card method. Check the Dual Boot thread in the General section I made a more detailed explanation. Hope that helps

Thanks!

Recovery

Hi Guys,
OK, so the note at the bottom obviously didn't explain well enough that this is Stockwells Recovery, he made this, not me.
Sorry for any confusion caused
Just putting this here rather than sifting through the 38 page thread
Installing recovery.img
You can download the image http://www.apksmash.com/x5/recovery.img
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY HAPPEN TO YOUR DEVICE
First thing to do is turn off the phone then hold power and BOTH volume buttons
http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/vbp.jpg
That will bring up this purple screen
http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/purple1.jpg
Next plug in your USB and you will be able to access it as a mass storage device
http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/massstorage.JPG
The next step is simply rename your recovery.img (for later access if needed) then put in the new one (found at http://www.apksmash.com/x5/recovery.img).
http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/image.JPG
Next turn off the phone (I’ve found that battery pulling is the only way out of recovery mode).
http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/battpull.jpg
Then put the battery back in and while the phone is still OFF, plug in the USB. This will show the Huawei screen and boot in to recovery
http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/recov.jpg
Easy enough to do Good luck and have fun!
I also have this in .doc form at http://www.apksmash.com/x5/howto/Recovery guide.doc
All of this would not be possible with Stockwell!
He's been a brilliant help since Day 1 of the X5
very useful
thanks
Stockwell may prefer to create a topic for which he can post a "sticky" at the start of the topic that he can update with the latest image as it becomes available.
I'll try to suggest this in a PM to Stockwell.

Evo shift on metropcs/Cricket With MMS

OKay i was having some major problems with an evo shift on metropcs.
The problem was that i could not get qpst to recognize my phone. basically it is a surf-msm7830 and it draws a blank when you try to re-provision. It only shows banner and phone state waiting for cdma or something like that.
So after a month of messing with it, i finally got a good version of qpst that works with evo shift 4g/speedy.
The secret is qpst 2.7.366, i got it from conflipper, the guy who does cricket stuff at ppcgeeks.
You have to remove the old qpst then install the new one.
Just follow bloodykiller86's tutorial and youre set to go.
I would make a modified bloody killer tutorial but i dont have the time to make screenshots.
Bloodykiller86 tutorial
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8395950#post8395950
and here is qpst, please please make some mirror 4shared, hotfiles, and file sharing accounts.
Here is qpst
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6388346
I am uploading at 2mb so anyone should be able to get it, but i wont seed for ever.
I cant post on any other xda threads because of my low post count, stupid rule.
So feel free to move my post to anywhere it is suitable, also please add to a sticky or make this a sticky. It took me for ever to find this information and yes dont bring up the lame "search" question. It gets old and my response is, what makes you think PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO search? Just answer the question and you have more ways for answer to be indexed.
And all you people that make money from the evo shift flashing and dont want to share information, SCREW YOU!!!
I HOPE YOU LOOSE SOME MAJOR MONEY NOW THAT THIS IS OUT!!!!!!!
Almost forgot, dont forget to root. Shiftrr worked good for me. The hard part was getting the drivers and adb to work.
Then once that worked you just have to apply shiftrr about 2-3 times and see if you get root.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/root-and-install-recovery-on-htc-evo-shift-4g-one-click-root/
Another tip, if you cant install android sdk because of java dependency (%programfiles%\Java\jdk1.6.0_25\jre and you know you have it installed already.
Just download the zip and extract anywhere, it should work just fine with out the installer.
EDIT: MMS is now working good
Here is the link to a known working mms solution for the evo shift.
"Also wana add that if you do wipe cache and data or restore apns to default after doing my fix YOUR MMS WILL STILL WORK this makes metropcs your default setting"
http://team-nocturnal.com/showthread.php?393-evo-shift-metropcs-mms-fix
Thanks for sharing. But Im having issues. The link that you provided with the qpst tool......well, when you download it, there is nothing in the file box. Its an empty torrent. So could you plz give us a hotlink, rapidshare, megaupload or any re-link to the tool.
Im trying to flash back to sprint, and have been searching on-and-off for 2 weeks for this tool. Thanks
Edit:
Oh, and you dont have to put it in torrent format again, as we would have to depend on a very few seeders, so to eliminate that potential problem, uploading it to some dedicated file spot would be the way to go. Im sure u are well aware of that.
And if you do re-torrent it, im willing to help out for a month or two as i have a 10mb upload. (60mb down )
oh, last question. The usual versions I locate are 2.7.323, however I just found a 2.7.355, my question is did you try the .355 version and was not successful with that or was it the .323 version?
Guess I will hang tight til you send me a copy of the .366 one. thanks in advance!!
Oh i am sorry for not replying, been really busy at work.
Also just to let you know.
I am always seeding, its just that my kids tend to turn of the computer from time to time.
So sit tight if it doesnt start.

[Q] Error formatting data on CM7 install

Newbie here - used search feature, searched across forums. Did not find my problem addressed.
Putting CM7 on wife's NC 1.2.0. Followed huskermania's steps exactly. Everything installed fine until I got to the part where I selected format data. Then I received message, "error formatting data!" Everything stops right there and I have to power the unit down.
Re-downloaded the file twice - went through the complete process two times across several different times so as to avoid frustration causing more trouble! Using a Sandisk 8g class 4 card.
Using 7zip, cm7.0.3, and win32diskimager, and google add-ons, downloaded as directed by the husker dude.
In one section of his video, Huskermania moves files to the mSD - his files are shown as yellow folders. Mine show up as a small stack of books. When I look at the properties of my files, they are winrar zip archive files.
Please help! I'm so close!!
Thank you,
Jim
I believe your issue has been addressed more than one, maybe not exactly the same but pretty close.
Anyway, your NC is v1.2.0, often called "blue dot" which B&N decided to change the partition mapping, used to be 1GB /data & 5GB /media in v1.1, now be 5GB /data & 1GB /media in v1.2.0.
If you don't have a bootable uSD card with CwM Recovery 3.2.x.x or above, it will give you that error "cannot format /data". However, in my specific case, I did have the issue but my NC actually continued to next step, not hung and no need to force reboot.
I suggest you get the newer CwM (v 3.2.0.1) and give it a try again.
Votinh,
Thank you for your reply. As I learn, I am finding that sometimes I don't understand what to ask to find the solution!
I will try this today and report back.
Thank you again,
Jim
Wait!
I checked the version of the file I had used to install cwr and it is 3.2.0.1 - the same file that I was encouraged to try. To be more precise, it is "recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.1-bravo.
So, I'm still stuck.
HELP!
Thank you,
Jim
Can't offer anymore help, m8 but I don't think you should be panic.
If I were you, I would try to re-partition/re-format to 1GB /data 5GB /media, then using CwMR v3.0.2.8 and try again.
Great! Now, can you tell me how to do that?
Thank you,
Jim
I would suggest reading This first. Important info if you are going to muck around in the internal memory partitions.
Then I would go Here and see if this will help.
If not, This, This, or This might be your next best steps as far as reading and/or trying.
Also, This Sticky could shortcut you to the solution you need.
All these links go to XDA threads here in the Nook Color forums. They aren't all the recovery threads, but most of the more recent ones that could help you.
I haven't had to deal with what you're trying to handle, but this should be a great start/solution to solving your problem.
It's gonna take some reading and absorbing to comprehend what you're trying to accomplish, given the level familiarity you seem to have with your device and it's internal file structure.
(I mean no slight by this, the fact that you are here trying to learn and figure out your issue says much - welcome to the community btw )
Tcandroid,
Thank you for your input. I solved the problem by following votinh directions about partitioning. I'm finally up and running cm7!
Two concerns remain:
1. Do I need to worry about OTH updates from barnes and noble messing up my efforts? My hunch is no, just want to make sure. If so, how do I turn that off?
2. Can I over clock to 950 with what has already been installed, or do I need to download and install something else?
Thank you all so much!

This put a smile on my face, i'm glad to hear you got your issue resolved.
Nothing worse then having a wonderful piece of technology right in your hands that you can't use.
I have no doubt you are going to have a blast with it.
Cruise through the 'themes and apps' subforum here in Nook Color Forums, and you'll find some gems that are out there in the market.
I am not sure about the answers to either of your questions, but I do know that:
Some people have had to do some funky things to block B&N updates, and there have been conflicting answers on this. Again, only have seen in passing - so not sure what the whole story is here.
B&N doesn't push updates that often, so it's likely you have some time to figure this out.
I see people mentioning overclocking to 1200 a lot, so 950 shouldn't put too much stress on your machine. Depending on what version of CM7 you are running, you shouldn't use an external app to overclock. I've been using mine at the standard 800 and can play games like Samurai 2 (with chainfire installed) and it's no problem for the machine.
If your CM7 version provides you overclock settings, use those and not an outside app like SetCPU.
Some random info gleaned from browsing through this forum. Not too specific in addressing your query, yet maybe helpful in your continuing Android education.

I help many people in many threads and tend not to remember the OP's original issue, so I have to re-read again
Firstly, congrats to you, do enjoy the NC running CM7. I bet by now, you are not a noob or newbie anymore, experience learnt.
Secondly,
1. since the NC is running CM7 ROM now, you don't have to worry about anything from B&N, even their new release probably won't be as good as the CM7.
2. by default, CM7 comes with kernel that can be overclocked to 925MHz (at least true on the v123 nightly build, not sure the latest) and again, it runs at 800MHz by default. You can set it under ??? (not on top of my head now and I don't have the NC in front of me, will update later).
If you want to run faster than 925MHz, you must install Dalingrin latest work - build on 06302011. Be sure download the "emmc" version since you run the CM7 off the internal memory.

You SN is aptly named
Literally two posts below yours http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230744&highlight=ro+carrier
Perhaps the response was helpful to android-noob, I'm not sure. However, I have searched for quite a while and don't see anything relating to the questions that result in actual help to fix the problems. I certainly take full credit for being an android idiot but we all start somewhere when we're trying to learn new things. I've been trying to learn from reading and this is quite honestly the best forum for everything that has to do with phones and tablets.
I would appreciate a simple link or response that might be of help to fix the problem of suddenly getting the errors listed by the first poster if you would be so kind.
Thank you for any help you can give.

Let's see. I did provide a link in my response, and the last post on the page of the link I gave had the fix for the sim card message. How much more spoon feeding will you require?
first you need file manager with root access
Sim card messages:
Go to system there is a file called build.prop ,open it and add the line ro.carrier=wifi-only,you can add this line on the bottom of the file for example and les and save the file.
Reboot and the simcard message should be gone.
For the fd.updater problem:
That is because the build prop is changed so the update service doesn't recognize it.
That is no problem I delete this in my roms so you won't have that stupid message.
What you can do is go to system/app, find fd.updater.apk and fw.updater (i think that is the correct name) and rename them by putting a .bak behind the name of the apps.
Reboot and the messages should be gone.

Op I do not have this or any of the other known issues with the custom roms.thou I know they can bring some extra speed and apps.
Kjy can you go spoon shopping for me.Erica needs some new winter boots.

Goodluck. OP ..
BACKUP THE BUILD .prop file before you edit it.

6055U Root method found

Hello all, I found a method to Root and get a custom recovery on our cricket variant, no donations required! You need to find a copy of sugar qct with a username and password, I don't remember exactly where I found it but it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Then you need to let it update to the latest build, which includes the programmer for our phone. If you don't see 6055u in the list it's not up to date. From there, Hook up your phone (may need to manually put it in download mode. Press upgrade and then navigate to the install directory, look in /bin and find where it downloads all the mbm files. Replace the one that starts with an r with the TWRP recovery for 6055. You may have to overwrite it multiple times during the process. If you did it correctly you will be able to boot into TWRP, if not try again. If you don't close sugar I believe it won't overwrite the firmware files, but I haven't messed with it much. I will try to write a tool to make it easier when I have the time but I'm pretty busy. Feel free to pm me with any questions and I will help the best I can.

Did a Google search for "sugar qct" and I see a couple of million hits for "The Sugar Act"...
Tried Root Genius, and it, of course doesn't work...
If you happen to find a link for the app or method you stated, I would be eternally grateful... My lovely wife and I upgraded our phones to the Cricket 6055U, and, since, while not an Android developer, per se, can find my way around the device without being scared off...
So, with due respect, I'd ask if you have the app or name correct?
Thanks, friend, and best respect.

This should help with setting up sugar. The only difference here is to update it and you also need a username and password that I don't have on me at the moment. It will be a few hours until I get home but I will update asap.
Edit: nevermind lol, good luck friend. You may need a decent battery percentage as well

OK... apparently I'm an idiot... Running Windows 10 Pro, and the installer says it's going to install to an appropriate folder on C:\... yet, trying to find it, it really is weird.... Can't seem to get the beast to work...
If you would be so kind, would there be any way you'd be able to write up a concise step-by-step thing, if you've made it work... I've got the .chm file open on my desktop, and have spent a few hours trying to make it work to no avail.
Again, if it worked for you, your process would be welcome.

My point is that the site recommended seems to insist on Lollipop on the small beast... and there doesn't seem to be a recommendation for the .bin files, and, when installing on Win 10, it seems to install the Sugar app into some directory on my C: drive that is really not that accessible... Did it using a VMWare Win 7 32-bit virtual, and was able to access the directory, copy and paste to my regular C: drive (old Windows geek since Win 3.11... and DOS 3), and it seemed to run... (of course, running as Administrator), but it really doesn't seem to work for me... Again, I freely admit that I'm likely not doing something right, but even after some research and the included .chm file, I seem to be missing something.
Again, and begging your indulgence for seeming like a noob or a rube, but if I'm not making it happen, I rather think that the tips would be lost on someone for whom this is their first Android device...
Kinda frustrating, as, even though I've been a tech-support guy and database developer for more than 30 years, this thing has me stymied...
I found it fascinating for the *#*# command, earlier, from another noble soul, and, obviously, I also found that the device as configured says, basically... "Don't give a damn... you can turn this sucker on, but as soon as you exit this menu, I'm gonna turn it off again."
Just a little frustrating, and it seems that most of the tips and tricks elsewhere seem to be thinking that new owners of the 6055U are running Lollipop.... aaarrrgggghhh....
If it needs Lollipop to work, and if there's a relatively painless way to downgrade, and then upgrade from a ROM, I'm good with that... the Idol 3 seemed to require that, and it worked well for me, with just an evening's work. This one? Cricket seems to have had a warped sense of humor about it... I seriously dig the device, and, since my Idol 3 broke, and my lovely wife's LG G-Stylo (which was a pain in the ass, and next-to-impossible to root, and then be just perpetually stuck at the logo screen with an unfixable boot loop, if one screwed it up, and just required sending the beast back to LG, as long as one took out Cricket's warranty plan... <sigh>), we took the plunge on this one...
Not much for which I require root, but, since I spent good money on some legit apps (and lucked into a few ... ahem... not legit apps that worked for me), these things require root... I know there's a way to do it, and the Sugar app seems promising, but, mildly autistic guy that I am (and 60 years old, with a memory that doesn't work as it used to), a slimmed-down step-by-step doc would be helpful... should some noble soul put such together...
Apparently, the root method has worked for at least one member here.... But this weird old Jewish hippie doesn't see the mental diagram....
Any help would be welcome, my friends and mishpocheh... ("dear family" --- been here enough years, albeit a relatively quiet member, that y'all might as well be family... )
Hey everyone, sorry about the confusion. I installed on Windows 10 pro with no issues. As far as the page I linked you can disregard everything but the app itself. The update that downloads is marshmallow, and I've had no issues overwriting the latest version. I may have gotten sugar from a different location though, as soon as I get a chance I will do a better write up with everything. A helpful way to find the install directory would be right click on the shortcut from the start menu and click find Target / open file location. If it brings you to the folder with the shortcuts do it again and you will have the install directory. The app should be in (install dir)/tool and the downloaded updates go in (install dir)/bin under a folder that only shows up once you start the process within sugar. I will try to compile the information into a more user friendly format tonight but I can't make any promises on that.
Also just to clarify, I didn't use any chm file
I'm wondering if you could upload your version you have on your pc. I just spent the last month in jail here in Orlando fighting a case and the only proof I've got is on my phone on a phone that I deleted my videos on. I really need the videos back too get a not guilty if I gotta pay for it it's cool but I'm out on bond and all the recover videos apps require root
I got this to work last night. Typed up some instructions but didn't get them posted. They're on my PC at home and I'm at work.
Basically use the copy of sugar in the download package in this thread and then start it and let it update https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/recovery-vodafone-prime-tab-7-t3548560
Those are the basic instructions too except we don't need to swap out bout and use the TWRP from deckersu thread.
Once flashed it'll automatically reboot. I found you had to make sure you caught this and booted into TWRP right away don't let the phone boot. Then transfer SuperSU in TWRP and flash.

FYI this root method wipes your phone so I don't know if this will help your situation or not.
In sugar there is an option to not wipe, it's under session settings or something to that effect

Wish I had noticed that!! Oh well, stoked to have root and it's good to start fresh. Got Xposed installed today and finally got that annoying charging light turned off. Working on getting wifi tetherng working. Then if I can figure out how to get the dialer to be friends with Google voice this phone will have all its annoyance fixed
Thanks so much for figuring this out and sharing!!

Thank you for finding this thread, it is the same one I found but I couldn't remember where it was the other day when I started this thread. Hopefully this will help the people who have been having issues, although I will admit a more painless method would be preferable. I'm currently working on modifying a dirtycow exploit to simply flash the recovery and reboot into twrp, if I get it to work I will zip it all up and post it here.

I got wifi tethering working I did a lot of things but I believe that did it was adding net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to my build.prop then I went into system/app and changed serviceentitlement.apk into serviceentitlement.oat using es file Explorer

Thanks for figuring this out!!! I'd been messing with it for a few days. The renaming the apk to .oat was the piece I was missing. That and a reboot got it working!!

To get root just install supersu
