I have always used "gallery" to view pictures that I have stored on my external micro SD card. This new ATT galaxyS4 doesn't allow it. It only displays pictures that are stored on the internal SD card.
I got root and use an app called "root explorer" is the only way to view the pictures I have stored, which is ok but there is no slide show function in root explorer.
I postponed the update that came in over the airwaves, but it processed last night while asleep. I don't see any difference except it's not rooted anymore. Gallery is still limited to viewing only the onboard chip that's full of bloatware.
Does anyone else notice gallery not seeing the external SD?

Storage and reading of the external SD card for pictures works great for me.
One thing to note if you are having problems with the gallery, is to reformat the SDCard in the phone.
I was getting laggy gallery images, and a high battery drain from the Gallery.
Reformatting the SD card cleared up all my problems!
When you open gallery, hit menu and content to display. Make sure all is selected.

Is there anyway to save all downloaded pictures/screenshots to the SD card? I wiped my phone the other day and my downloaded pictures got deleted because it was in Internal Storage

If you use stock browser anything downloaded will go to external sd. Camera also asks you to save pictures on external sd when inserted, if not it can be changed in camera settings.

If you save a picture that was texted to me, it saves internally rather than on the SD card. Is there is anyway to fix this?

I stuck a different 32 gb class 10 microSD chip in the external memory slot and gallery started working finally.
So I assume the chip I've always used needs formatting sounds like.
Thank you for the feedback.
I have a similar issue as OP. I have a 64gb Sandisk SDXC, and it came straight over from the S3 and the S4 gallery didn't see my pix from the card either nor the music player see all my music. I have to format the card in the phone then copy everything over from pc to phone via usb for the gallery and music player to see what's on my ext card. Then the phone restarted by itself, and it says the sd card is damaged, then the OTA update came just in time, updated, amd magically the Sd card was fixed, now it only see select videos and images and still none of my music. If it's in the inter sd then it's fine.
Do you guys think my sd card is shot?

It sure sounds like it. My chip still works, all I did was use the computer to format it.
The only way to tell is get another chip and put some files on it for a test.
It ticks me off they don't even populate the external SD slot with a cheap chip like they used to. ATT phones used to come with a one or two gigabyte capacity bottom dollar chip for free but alas they got even more greedy!

I used foldermount and moved the DCIM folder to the external sd, so all the setting have it looking at the mounted folder on the internal card, even the burst shots are stored right onto the external. the longer I've had foldermount, the happier i am with it. endless possibilities!
Not sure if the camera app has the option to save to sd card. Or do we have to manually do it ourselves.
if its pure Android, then the camera app will have a storage setting to int/ext sd

I was about to create a thread. Since I have seen this thread similar to what I wanted to post, I am sharing how I am using external SD to save images taken using Google Camera.
It is very simple and easy using the app Foldersync (I am using pro version to have unlimited folder pairing).
Here is the play store link for Lite version LINK
Use of this app is mainly to transfer files to cloud server but does the job to copy / move from internal memory to external SDcard.
You can see sample screenshot attached.
Yes, you can save pictures to the SD card directly from the stock camera app. If you bring out the side menu while in the viewfinder, scroll down and you'll see a little SD card icon. Tap that, and choose SD card instead of internal storage.
No need for a third party app.

The question was how to push images taken from Google camera in to external sdcard without manual copying process from folder to folder. Also, it can be used to move any periodical update on to internal memory to external sdcard (eg. anything downloaded which saves in to internal memory under Download folder).

I didn't see "Google Camera" anywhere in the original question. I just see this:
Subject: Can the camera app save pics to SDcard?
Thread: Not sure if the camera app has the option to save to sd card. Or do we have to manually do it ourselves.
In this case, my directions are what the OP needs to do in order to save photos directly to the SD card.

It's also resetting apps saved to the card. It changes from Swiftkey backnto stock keyboard and I'll have to put passwords back in things like Facebook. Bad card maybe?
If you are using adaptive storage for your SD card, which it sounds as if you are, then you will not get the option on the camera app. Adaptive storage makes the SD card essentially like an extension of your internal storage therefore recognizes only internal storage. There are no other storage options to choose from.

It sounds like you are using adoptive storage on your SD card. I use adoptive storage and don't have any issues with it, the camera does save to the SD card for me and I do not have the option to change that in the camera app since the system shows the card as internal storage. So like aybarrap1 said, you will not see the option in the camera app.
The other issues you are having are strange. I suppose your card could be going bad. Do you have a fast card? Perhaps it is too slow and that is why you are having issues with apps saved to it.
Slow cards could cause apps to be flaky. I personally don't use adoptive storage yet. Waiting on the fast cards (90+ read and write speeds) to hopefully come down in price. Since internal storage is not an issue for me ATM, I'm not really stressing it.
I also using adoptive sd card but pics and videos are being saved in internal memory instead external ,actually I don't understand this new feature I still have 2 different memory internal and external, even I'm running out of memory help please
PS I have a 64gb Samsung card so is not slow is the one that came with my s7 edge I'm guessing is good speed

Oh that was SO the right answer. Thank you!
My Moto X Pure does not show the option to save on SD card either. I have all the other options in the user manual except the SD card. It runs Android 6.0 and uses SanDisk Extreme PLUS microSDXC UHS-1 64 Gb card.
Can someone check the ability to transfer apps to the SD card? I have a Verizon S7 Edge, when I transfer an app to the SD card it says it moves but nothing seems to happen. The amount to storage on the card doesn't change and no new files are created. I have tried this with Audible and Strava.

Yes, seems to be broken for me as well, it says to move and also shows it being on the external sd in the application manager afterwards, but the taken storage is the same on internal and external. It did create the subfolder in Android/obb for me on the external sd, but it was empty. I also tried to move the file within the folder by hand into the folder on the external, but the game simply wouldn't load afterwards (tried it with Implosion), just stayed on a black screen after the first starting screen.
Ok, found the problem, when you move the app from internal storage to external sd from within settings - > applications, it moves parts of the app from the internal data folder to the Android folder on the internal sd, what is pretty pointless...

You could enable Adoptable Storage so that some of your external SD card will be used for internal memory: http://www.modaco.com/news/android/heres-how-to-configure-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/
I know, but even while i have a class 10 card, i don't want the speed impact when putting all on the sd, also I'd like to use the internal storage to its full potential and just put some certain apps to the external sd, but thanks anyways.

Samsung disabled the adaptive storage option. Here is the response I got from Samsung on the app data issue. I looks like they know the data isn't moving.
"I have checked our resources and found that whenever an app is moved to the SD card, only the app and the dependencies of the application for the Operating System to identify the app on the SD card are only moved. Data associated with the app is not moved to the SD card.
Let’s hope that our future updates should allow the user to move the apps data to the SD card along with the app.
I would have surely helped you if there was any other option to move the apps data to the SD card.
I appreciate your time in writing to us. "
Argh, how annoying is this? My s7 is doing exactly the same. Nothing is actually being transferred to the sd card with their move to sd tool! I'm glad I bought a 64gb card especially (not) grrr!
Just had a thought. Has anyone tried this with an encrypted SD card? Maybe that's why....
When using the stock Samsung camera and stored to my SD card, I use Google Photos to edit the photos, however, I get this error when trying to delete any photo:
"Photos doesn't have access to delete item on your SD card. Go to the Gallery app to continue deleting"
I checked the permissions of the Google Photos app, and it does in fact have access to the SD card.
What gives?
I got my S7e a week ago and I have the same problem. Really annoying, especially as this was working fine on my previous phone Moto X Style. with an external SD card. Apparently the app does this by design, just wondering why was it working ok on my other phone and if there is a way to change this behaviour.
I have no problem with either the gallery app or google photo's accessing my EXSD card. It is either there are not the correct permission granted, or your EXSD card is not formatted correctly?
This was a brand new 32Gb microsd card I have formatted in the phone. Is yours FAT32 or extFAT? Did you format it in a PC?
You have to create a new folder in SD card (anywhere but under DCIM folder) and move the pics there manually. Google photos cannot access the pics under DCIM folder of SD card. Once the new folder has been created, allow that folder to be uploaded in Google photos app under Device folder.
I know its a pain to move the pics every time but that's how it is.

I'm only having issues when it comes to deleting pictures stored on external sd card from Google Photos. I'm trying to avoid the extra manual step involved when deleting files, not the end of the world.
I just can't explain why this worked without problems on my old Moto X Style but not on the S7 edge.
Hi, haing the same issue, did you find a solution?
This is by design. I believe the google photos app team said there is no way around this currently.
The way around it is granting g photos SD card access through one of the many available solutions for root users. One such solution is xinternalsd

Some of us use Android Pay and other such things that simply don't work when the phone is rooted. And as of the August security patch from Google .. it's just more chasing the dragon as far as keeping AP and root. Those of us with not enough time in the day don't want to keep chasing it. It just kinda sucks that Googles own photo app has this issue. I guess they have to adhere to their own rules.
Hi everyone,
I got the latest Moto X as soon as it went public because I loved the idea of Vanilla Android with SD support. I got the 16 GB version and a 64 GB SD. Ever since I got it, the phone has been bugging me about the storage and today I finally gave in. Until today I kept my photos, music and podcasts on my SD card but the internal memory was constantly full and I couldn't install new apps. So I thought formatting the SD card under Android 6 would make it one with the internal storage. It didn't. It made it worse. I can move apps to the SD card but I can't force photos and other media to be saved there. I was hoping for internal-SD continuity and I got a total lack of control. So now I can't receive SMS and I keep having "storage is running out" notification while I still have 60 GB free on my SD card.
What's your take on this? Thanks!
Since this is about SD cards, I'm having another problem to state if OP doesn't mind. On my Moto X, when using exploring (using file explorer) the original sd card I've used for years, many folders do not show up. The same happens to a video player (RockPlayer), where it doesn't show many folders I have on my card (it did when used on my previous Atrix 2). However, when I go to "Storage & USB" and select the card, everything is normal. That means, only when viewing the sd card via "Storage & USB", all folders appear.
However, applications and games (besides gallery) will assume the first situation, where those folders remain invisible. Does anyone know what the problem actually is?
Edit: After checking, it seems that my /sdcard folder is the same as /storage/emulated/0.
Thank you.

Have you tried using OpenCamera instead? It's free, open source, AND lets you choose where to store the pics. IMHO the picture quality is better too.
You could also move the pics to the card manually after you take them...

Great call, thanks for the tip.
I haven't had any problems saving photos or other media to my SD card with adoptable storage. This is something you should be able to specify in preferences whether you are using adoptable storage or not. If this doesn't work with some apps just use a file manager to move the files to the SD card.
Sometimes when I move apps to my SD Card, I would get similar messages about being out of space, even though this wasn't the case. Deleting the cache on SD card seemed to fix the problem. There can also be a problem if your SD card is too slow. However, you would probably get an alert if that was the case.
My advise erase it all internal and sd card start from a blank state the phone should give you the option to mount the sd as internal I don't like how it is implemented so I chose not to use it.
For some strange reason my phone will not read my SD card I have it formatted to internal stage and now it says searching for SD card. I'm so mad I've searched all over with no solution, I'm about to get a new phone and scrap this one, sorry I'm just very upset and I had to vent, of anyone knows of this type of issue please share.
