What to use to store backups? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do you guys store backups on your n7 that root and flash your tablets? Since 16gigs is probably not enough.

I keep a fully stock backup on my device, and the rest on a PC.
The stock backup is very small so takes up little room. This way, if i mess up, i can restore that, and then transfer and restore the latest backup i made from the PC.

Are the back ups saved with blobs now on the n7? And how did you get it on your computer?

I use twrp wich doesnt use blobs
And usb wire

Oh duh. I'm stupid. Didn't even think about that lol

if you use cwm you can backup the whole directory to computer.
i use ftp sync and sync this stuff of the night time to my FTP Server. that syncs with our desktop that also supplies storage to all of our devices as well as movie storage for the tvs.
the ftp allows me to backup or restore even if im not home .as well as access every file picture document or piece of software we own..
FTP been around for a very long time and still most reliable..
Ok now im telling how old i am.. remember the bbs systems .. and the pre irc relay chat servers. on a first generation modem ?

No idea how what ftp is but I will look into it! Thanks!

use CMW to backup and save to your computer ...

[Q] Good backup solution for the thinkpad?

Hey there..I'm looking for a good backup for my thinkpad tablet
On my htc desire I made the 'standard thing':
- rooted
- TitaniumBackup (which simply works grrreeeaaattt!)
- and sometimes to a nice nandroid backup (you never know...)
But: I use my thinkpad for business and I also want to have customer data and connection to customer networks. Therefore I think it's a little bit more secure to have this thing not-rooted.
But: TitaniumBackup only does it's great job on a rooted phone
Is there anything where I can also:
- at least save all apps/data (like TitaniumBackup)
- do something like a nandroid?
And..I dont want to use dropbox.
Any creative ideas?
I don't think that such a thing is possible without root. You cannot access your /data/app folder without root so I do not believe you can find a program that will be able to backup your apps unless you have root. A nandroid backup requires a custom recovery in addition to root.
How about just rooting it, backing it up, then un-rooting it?
The backup process is the lengthy one.
I really think thats one of the topics where iphone/ipad are a little bit ahead...backup/restore is just really straight forward and reliable.
My currently used workarounds:
- On USB connection/hard drive mode I back-up (critical) data from the sdcard to my pc (about weekly). I actually do this use microsoft's synctoy tool (which by the was is a really cool synching tool)
- apps: beg and pray...
if it's only to copy your Sdcard folder on PC, you can try Airdroid
EDIT :
Just found that !

Backup apps to cloud?

So i was wondering if anyone has ever needed to back up all there apps to a location other then there phone/tablet. it would be cloud storage i would think. reason is i need to backup all my apps and have then to be restored apon receiving replacement nexus. I herd sandisk memory zone? thanks.
MyBackup Pro has an option to backup to online storage and restore. I'm not sure if the free version has that option but I know the paid version does.

I use the following process to ensure I can restore my whole device to a brand new unit if necessary.

I use my workstation rather than a Cloud for a Number of reasons. The best being that the workstation has a triple redundant backup, and if I really need access to it remotely I already have that ability.
I used this to create a restorable copy of a completely setup device to a brand new unit successfully already.

I create the same functionality with Dropsync. It basically lets Dropbox function the same on your tab as your computer. I run my backups with TiBu in the early morning, and although syncing can be slow, it easily finishes before I get up. I was already using Dropbox so this was the most convenient solution for me.

I forgot to mention that i would like an option to do an entire backup without having to root first. From my understanding rooting it would wipe user data? so then there would be no point lol

Rooting doesn't wipe the data, Unlocking the Bootloader does. Why unlocking should be done before doing a lot of work.
You can use adb to do a backup of your system, but none of the other things I talked about will work. No point in moving it to a cyberlocker since it will already be on your computer/workstation.

While TB is something that I do and end up with a copy in my backup system, it is not what I use to restore to a new device. Instead I use the Nandroid Backup (created with TWRP). Much much faster and more complete. Only need to move over the Nandroid backup files after you have unlocked the new device and rooted, and put the recovery on the device. Then simply do a restore in recovery wipe Davik and Cache and you are right back where you were with the other device.
The sync to the workstation via the Cheetah Sync is much faster than syncing to dropbox and I am backing up more than just the TB files for a more useful backup.

TitaniumBackup+ has support for backing up to Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive.
I use App Backup & Restore to backup every app I install (automatically), then Dropspace to push it to my Dropbox (automatically). Then I relax with a cappuccino and carrot cake.

Titanium backup - cant access folder from PC

Hey guys!
i want to use TB to backup all my apps and save games - so first i wanted to ask, do i back up user apps AND system Data? or just user apps? also i saw that some stuff in "system data" seems like fundamental things that might change with a new rom.. so how does that work?
2nd,
i used the backup option and put it in the "Downloads" folder, (for easy access), i also have 3 extra pics there.
when i conncet the USB (debugging is on) to the PC and open DOWNLOADS folder in the phone, i only see the 3 files, no TB backup folder,
show hidden files and folders is activated on my PC... also tried this in a few diff folders but nada..
help?
If I'm going to be switching ROMs I usually just backup user data...I've had problems in the past restoring system data on a new ROM.
As far as transferring the TitaniumBackup folder to your PC, its my understanding that since Jellybean (or maybe even ICS, I don't remember) devices connect as MTP devices (and not mass storage) so you can't see non-media files from Windows Explorer.
I'm not sure what everyone else is doing, but I've just been using adb to pull the TitaniumBackup folder from the phone. You could probably also just use one of the Samba servers in the Play Store to setup a windows accessible shared drive on your phone and copy the backup folder over wifi.

I ended up downloading it yesterday to try it out, it shows "Enabled - Not Running" on my phone, but I was still able to connect to it from my Linux box (didn't try from Windows yet)

Titanium Backup like for Windows

People with android who know what Titanium backup is. Is there a software like TI backup for windows. That allows you to backup software plus data and to choose what you want to restore?
It's sort of built in. Windows backup... however, you'll need an external drive. :good:

titanium backup is much closer to Mac Time machine than microsoft backup, wich back up the whole drive or the whole apps, not just one by one. And also for every everytime has failed, no one of the backup in all my cmputers did restore propperly. Every times let mi an error in 6 different computer. Acronis is much better.
Windows has several ways of backing up stuff:
1) The good old windows backup...
2) System restore (which kinda runs like a backup up, one usually does a system restore before they do a full windows restore.)
3) Skydrive (for metro-apps only, pictures, music, documents and other personal files.)
All of which are built-in
i think u need cloneapp

Copy ALL contacts, text, photos and downloads to another Essential

Getting ready to OTA the official 8.1 from Nougat BUT I am paranoid.
I have two PH-1's so I would like to update the never yet used phone to 8.1 THEN copy all contacts, text, photos and downloads into it from my in use PH-1. After that, I would like to factory reset my used PH-1, update it to 8.1 and then copy my stuff back.
Coming from Samsung to Essential, I lost a lot of file downloads - mostly .pdf's, some photos and some contacts. It took a long time to recover not knowing what was missing until I could not find it and some things are still missing!
Thanks in advance for all suggestions!
That's what the cloud is for my friend. Google Contacts, Drive, and Photos.
Used Google last time. Lots did NOT transfer!
If you're rooted, I love Titanium Backup. I've used it for years now. It will backup anything and everything, then just backup your Titanium folder to your PC. I also have tried SMS Backup+ which will backup your texts and MMS to Google. I will restore texts but will NOT restore MMS (yet. maybe one day.) Contacts should always be available on the cloud as long as you have the settings for it set. (You can check what contacts are saved to the cloud by going here: https://contacts.google.com) Also, if you're using Google's built-in backup services, you can check in settings to see when the last successful backup was done (Or check here: https://drive.google.com/drive/backups. If you change any settings you'll have to wait a while for it to sync again. Hope this helps!
Contacts look good but File Backups only have 5 files. Lots missing!

Do you mean that Google Drive only shows 5 entries named something like "PH-1 backup"? This should be correct -- it stores the entire backup as one entry. What you'll want to check, most importantly, is the date on the right side of each entry. The most current, which would be done 'today' will have the time, instead of a previous date.
I may be wrong, but to me, it seems like some apps just don't backup their data to Google Drive. I know, for instance, my bank app does not seem to remember my login, but I find that to be more secure.. if someone gains access to my Google account, they cant just restore my bank app and get my login handed directly to them. Another thing I've personally noticed is that when you do a fresh install and during setup it asks if you want to restore, the top option is NOT always the most recent backup. I don't know why this is, but I have accidentally restored an older backup while restoring a fresh install. Maybe that's what happened to you last time when things were missing?
If you want to make absolute sure you get everything in a backup, or don't trust Google to get the job done accurately, I still recommend Titanium (I use this, I'm not affiliated.. I just KNOW it works and it works well). Or, you can use any other 3rd party backup utility that you like.
Hope this helps!
-----EDIT----
If you want to just make a backup to your PC, you can use ADB to do backups.
adb backup [-f <file>] [-apk|-noapk] [-shared|-noshared] [-all] [-system|nosystem] [<packages...>]
I personally don't use adb for backups because I only backup a few select apps, but I would think that running adb backup with the 'nosystem' argument would provide you with a solid backup. I do NOT know all the ins and outs of using ADB so you'll want to research the correct usage to backup what you want, but I just wanted to add this as a backup option.
I also see no reason you couldn't use adb backup to do exactly what you originally asked... that is backup one PH-1 and restore it to another?
The link to the Backups keeps changing to:

Hmm. I don't have my phone right now so I can't look into it further, but is there not an option somewhere within that (in a dropdown menu maybe?) to view Backups? Alternatively, you could try the Desktop version. Click the 3 dots on the right upper corner of Chrome and select the box that says something about desktop version or desktop view.. something like that.
If all else fails, open the link I shared on an actual computer.
