Rooted Kindle Fire HD with working GAPPS and Play Store - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

So I gave this a shot and it worked perfectly.
1. Root your Kindle Fire HD
2. Downloaded and install the GoogleServicesFramework.apk
3. Download Vending.apk
4. Using a file explorer app on the Fire with superuser permissions AND the system file permissions set to Read-Write, move Vending.apk to /system/app.
5. Change the permissions of Vending.apk to User - Read/Write, Group - Read, Others - Read
6. Install Vending.apk
7. The Android Market should show up in your Kindle Fire HD apps. Tap on it and follow the steps.
8. Download and install the Play.apk to upgrade the the android market to the current Play market.
9. Enjoy!
GoogleServicesFramework.apk - mediafire.com/?zaumfwhraxcifqf
Vending.apk - mediafire.com/?31bn3e258jjpj8d
Play.apk - mediafire.com/?wwcqrlfwt8o1gnv

how about attaching said apks?
or at least which ones?
i'm going to guess it's the latest gapps for ICS though?

less then a week and its already been rooted and got the play store damn.

Keep in mind that we have no way of restoring the system folder yet, so if anything goes wrong with this process, you may end up bricking your tablet. Just a warning.

so, i'm getting application not installed errors when trying to do this.

has anyone got this to work completely? i got the market to install along with the framework services, but i can't log into my account, it tries and then times out after a while.
am i missing something?

try rebooting the fire.

Try adw launcher. Works for me. If you hit the home button it brings you back to the amazon launcher though. Adw gives you an app icon so you can always launch into it or add it to your favorites.

Worked for me as well and I'm not rooted! This is going to put big smiles on lots of folks' faces since many don't root. So this is what ICS really looks like on the KFHD! Time to personalize with widgets and themes!

Can't seem to get Google Play Movies to work. It hangs at sync. Any ideas as to how to fix this? Would love to access both Amazon Instant Video and Google Movie accounts.

I figured out how to get Google Play Movies to work as well. Place in system/app folder. set permissions to rw r r. reboot. install from file explorer launcher. If it doesn't work, reinstall again. Youtube signs in now as well using the same method!!!
YEAH BABY!

Thanks for your sharing!
It's almost the same with the method for Kindle Fire 1st gen.

Where is the Videos app in 3.1?

Just updated my Xoom Wifi to 3.1 with adb recovery. Did other people, (ie 3G Xoom owners) have the new Videos app installed by default? Its not on my Xoom nor is it in the Market.
dont have it on my wifi with 3.1 either. I didn't get the OTA update though, I updated mine through clockworkmod
It showed up in my apps called Video.
Try browsing to the video and open it.
The player will not be in the market.

can someone post the apk please?
Definitely not on my Xoom Wifi. Can you be sure to post what Xoom you are using and how you updated. Thanks.

Yes, /system/app and I will check the permissions right now.
Forgive me for not knowing the numerical value, but it is:
-rw-r--r-- root.root
just like all the others, doesn't appear to be any special value.
cant seem to figure this one out. I'm on wifi only. Theres a videos.apk in system/app/ with a bizarre 2008 modified date. Package installer on that other apk is unsuccessful. Tried to uninstall, but videos doesnt seem to be listed in manage applications. Renamed the original videos.apk, and package installer still doesnt work. Tried to move the new apk/odex to system/app/ and they dont seem to do anything.
Any advice and did us wi-fi folks get shafted?
I had a small Videos.apk file already there that appeared to be nonfunctional. Replaced with your files, chmod 644, rebooted. I still don't see them in my app list, and Titanium Backup shows com.google.android.videos at the end of the list with a strikethrough. The only option I get on a tap is to uninstall it. US Wifi Xoom running 3.1 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073884
Edit: Also, I pushed these files with adb to /sdcard then used an adb root shell to place them by hand into /system/app, if that matters.

Sorry you guys are having issues, unfortunately I don't have access to a Wifi XOOM until this weekend.
This behavior seems so odd though, why is the wifi geeking out. Maybe there is a model check?
I'm afraid pushing around files and some build.prop editing is about as far as my knowledge goes at the moment. I'm pretty good with linux in general, but the intricacies of Android are still new to me. I do have the modified root boot image for 3.1 applied now, along with the su and Superuser.apk binaries, as well as busybox 1.19 all linked up, so I'm about as rooted as it gets I think.
If you have any ideas I'd be happy to beat up on mine trying them out.

Is it possible that the Videos app won't work if you're rooted since this update introduces the new Widevine DRM framework and with root you could presumably rip streams?

I am rooted, and it is working fine for me, but it worked after install and never didn't work. (VZW 3G model).
Haven't tried any DRM'd content though.
For what it is worth, I rented Being John Malkovich just to see if it played... and it just says buffering over and over and then errors out, but no details.
Most likely is just release day issues, but I don't see google as being short on processing power or bandwidth..
*EDIT*
After still not being able to stream the movie, I chose to make it available offline, and I got this message:
"Unable to fetch license for "Being John Malkovich" error 49"
Splendid. Going to flash back to the original boot.img see if that helps.
*EDIT 2*
Flashing back to the stock 3.1 boot.img didn't help any. Went back to the insecure, rooted one. Hope someone with a stock install can chime in if it works or not. I like how it was okay to take my money and add it to my library but yet I can't play it :/
Missing the Video app here, too. Xoom Wifi.
Tried installing the APK above, but that also did not work.

How to install apks (no rooot access needed)

Hey guys I found a simple solution to install apks on the kindle fire
1) first click the download link for this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=360326&d=1279143194 DO THIS ON YOUR KINDLE
2) after it's done click open and install
3) put your kindle in usb mode and place any other apk on it
4) now you can install any apk from your file manager without root
u never needed root to "sideload" apps, root was if u wanted market.

Changing Keyboard

I'm running modaco's Rom with adw on top. Is the any way to change the keyboard to swiftkey? I've checked all the settings an saw nothing. Even tried to install it thinking maybe it would make something visable....nothing.
On another note... I know this is a kindle forum, given a choice between a fire and galaxy 7 tab plus. I don't need the camera or gps
. Thanks

Considered your kf already rooted, then you should install root explorer and go to data/app you will see the swiftkey app that you installed before. Copy it to system / app, before install swiftkey app inside system/app you have to mount the folder system/app from r/o to r/w. After install swiftkey.apk restart your kf. After that you could setup your new swiftkey on screen. Cheers

I try to install the google korean keyboard app in Gr8, wondering how.
do i really need to purchase the root explorer to do so? or is there any other options.

Got Sky go working on Tablet Z

Not sure if this is of interest to anyone but I managed to get Sky go working by side loading the apk and making one change to the build.prop.
change the following in build.prop
ro.product.model=SGP312
to
ro.product.model=C6603
You will also need to temporarily unroot device while using Sky go (You can remove and restore root without restarting tablet).
I used hide my root to hide the su binary and then uninstalled superuser.

Cheers dude! Going to try tomorrow. Only issue is the damned account being locked to 2 devices now. I miss when it was 4 for free!
Wait a sec...what are the 2 zips for?
The sky go zip replaces the build.prop with a sky friendly version, the other zip puts the original build.prop back in place. You'll need a recovery to use the zips.
Btw the build.props the zips are based on are from a SGP312

Google Play Store on Fire HD 2013

Hey,
after tinkering around for some days I came to the conclusion, that the playstore crashes because of the Download Manager.
I tried to sideload the download manager from my phone but that didn't work since the Kindle's missing some framework. (newer android on phone)
Could someone with a working gplay store upload the apk and odex for DownloadProvider and DownloadProviderUI?

You want to remember that most people just flash a Gapps zip these days. For those just staying rooted, I recommend using this more up to date tool that can also install Google play. It works real well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460

Well, you can always use KFFA and that tool will install Google Play real well. It is an older version but it will update right away too. Other than that, i don't know what else to offer. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069329 You can do factory reset or or use the Root Many Android tool that will re-install Google Play. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460

I've got a solution:
Install GPlay Store as mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365224
Then follow this solution:
Backup your Downloads App via Titanium Backup
Download the files attached to my post to your device
Copy the DownloadProvider.apk AND DownloadProviderUi.apk into your /system/app directory
Set the permissions to rw- r-- r-- for both
Reboot your Kindle Fire HD

I've just uploaded DownloadProviderUI.apk in my original post. Try these maybe this will work. Otherwise you could also try to patch your Google Play to a different version with Lucky Patcher (just google for it ) ('Toolbox' -> 'Install modded Google Play Store' -> select another version)
Also, now whenever I restart the tablet, I get a "com.google.process.gapps has stopped" message twice. I'm not sure what's causing that. It's probably from following the 5 different tutorials I've found. lol
I tried a few different Play Store version, but I'll give that Lucky Patcher a shot.
Do we need the DownloaderProviderUI.apk file too maybe? Maybe you would be so kind as to post that too?

I renamed the original DownloadProvider and DownloadProviderUi apks, adding '.bak' to the end, then moved the apks from this thread in there and changed the permissions. Just gets stuck at "Downloading...". I also tried a few different Play Store versions. Everything else syncs up fine (gmail, chrome, hangouts, youtube, ...), so I suppose it's good enough for now.
What I'm really hoping for is a custom recovery and CM11 nightlies.

From inside ES File Explorer go to tools > move down to root explorer and click on that (don't click on the word on.) Now click on "mount r/w > set permissions for both to rw and click OK.
Now choose device in you ES Explorer and go to data then app (or where ever your apk is downloaded.) Long press and select copy. Then click the device option again and go to system > app > paste.
