Those can be used as phones and so have the Phone app included.

Same here in malaysia, we have 10.1 3G and our cell phone system isnt screw up because it was controlled by our goverment here. So we must appreciate their effort n thx to our gov (pls, no politian here..lol)

Sorry, when I posted that, I hadn't heard that the Note 10.1 3G had been released more widely than Europe. I gather it's in almost every country OTHER than Canada and the US now...
The problem over here is that each carrier has their own set of frequencies or cell technologies. LIke here in Canada, there are three major cellcos and one major international carrier:
Rogers/Fido which is GSM + 3G on 1900/850 MHz
Bell which is TDMA + 3G on 1900/850 MHz
Telus which is CDMA + 3G on 1900/850 MHz
Wind which is 3G ONLY on AWS 1700 MHz
Almost no one will buy a high end smartphone unlocked because it ends up $550 to $950. They want to buy on contract. But if they buy on contract, then the carriers want it locked to their network and usually want it to be branded. Because we have three voice technologies and two different sets of 3G frequencies - cell makers have to make all sorts of variants for their phones to work on all networks so you have to buy the right one - and it's just a pain to get it right - so again, less interest in unlocked phones.
This means it takes longer for these 'phablets' and even cellphones in general to get to North America - and they often end up on just one carrier as an exclusive.
Now - over to ... well, most of the rest of the world.
They use GSM + 3G on 2100MHz
They do use different GSM frequencies (there are five commonly used ones, 850, 900, 1700, 1800, 1900) but most quad band phones cover the four main ones (all but 1700) and pentaband phones like the Galaxy Nexus do all five.
So a cell manufacturer can make ONE model and captures almost all the world - except for North America. That means they can reduce the prices. And, since your one phone works everywhere - it actually makes sense to get an unlocked one since you're more likely to travel and so want to use multiple SIMs. That's so common in Asia (as I'm sure you know) that they make multi-SIM phones for that market.
I had one dead pixel, in the address bar on the browser. Took it back and swapped it for a new one. Perfect, no dead pixels anymore.

So pretty much every smartphone nowadays is quad-band, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, and works pretty much anywhere in the world.
Why don't phones also support international 3G frequencies: 850/1900 as well as 900, 1700 and 2100 Mhz?

it all comes down to if the inc in cost is enough to justify the inc in

it doesnt matter how much! i'm sure qualcomm 1G snapdragon cpu is more expensive than 528mzh cpu, that doesnt stop toshiba or Acer from using it!

Quad band UMTS are rare indeed. Blackberry and Apple have them. Nokia has a quint band unit coming out in about 3 weeks, N8-00 (I have one on pre-order).
The Galaxy S Captivate is a tri band unit that will work in most of the world. It is missing the 900 MHz band. I can't recommend it because GPS is broken while awaiting a software patch and AT&T refuses to unlock the sim for 10 months. There is no known way to unlock the phone at the present time.

Don't be so hard on the manufacturers (please, note that HTC isn't the only phone manufacturer in the world...) AT&T only just started selling Android phones. Why would Android phone manufacturers make a phone that supports AT&T bands if AT&T won't support them in return? With the delays in so many phone shipments, I'm sure the companies don't need that much more business than they already have. Now that AT&T has decided to play ball, however, I'm sure there'll be a reciprocal increase in the number of Android phones with AT&T 3G bands

I bought an AT&T version before they stopped selling them, and on the slip that came with it it says
GSM 3G 850/1900/2100MHz
If i'm not mistaken, what is "the 3 UMTS Bands 900/AWS/2100" mean.
Does this phone not cover all bands? It's quoted to be carried independant.
There are two different nexus ones out there. Each one is compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile voice and data frequencies. BUT, if you get the T-Mobile banded model, then when you put an AT&T sim card in it you will only get Edge speed internet. The difference between the two is 3g connectivity. The really ****ty and annoying thing is the chip that is in the phone is supposedly capable of all GSM frequencies and all 3g frequencies but the phone is missing the correct ancillary chip to activate them all. So they made two different ones. I would bet that the American carriers weren't hap py about having a phone that could be taken from one provider to another and put their foot down. Just my theory though.
There are a couple of threads around at the moment that are eluding to a 850 MHz version of the Galaxy S. I'm currently using an original UK I9000 (900/2100 MHz) and am sick of the terrible service of 900 MHz carriers in Australia.
As such, when people start getting their hands on 850 MHz unlocked Galaxy S would they mind listing the following information.
- Reseller / Carrier (if they sell outright)
- Reseller / Carrier Shipping Destinations
- Price
- Firmware Version
- Locked / Unlocked
Semi-related, I contacted HTC Australia a couple of times when I was considering purchasing the Desire. HTC confirmed with me that all versions of the Desire are absolutely identical in terms of hardware. This confirmed the research I had performed that the HTC's/Nexus' radio chip has the ability to support both 850/900 MHz (not necessarily simultaneously). So it is definitely the case that flashing firmware onto your phone can convert a 900 MHz phone to a 850 MHz phone or vice versa. However, the firmware that needs to be flashed probably isn't directly flashable using standard android tools. You probably require physical access to the radio frequency chip to flash firmware onto the chip as well as corresponding firmware onto the phone. Where I'm going with all this is...
If we have any electronically inclined people on these forums, on top of the above information I would love to know if someone is willing to investigate whether it is possible to dump radio chip firmware from their 850 MHz device.

Thanks. I did notice that thread however, it's actually why I started this one. I just figured it would be a good idea to have a central place for people to upload information. So we can compare between resellers and learn a bit about the devices from each reseller once people get them in their hands.
I'm looking forward to see results from the New Zealand model, and Bell.

inside the phone, after you take out the battery it's a GT-i9000M
firmware was something J?5 (forgot the middle letter)
the Euro/Asia version is GT-i9000
they actually finally revealed the updated page, 2 weeks ago it didn't have the Tech Spec yet

No idea about the CA model, but the NZ model is the same as the european just with the different radio bands but no ideas about when it will be released, I emailed samsung NZ asking about it but no response yet. All phones sold in NZ are unlocked even apples's iphone 4 which has an exclusive contract with vodafone here is sold unlocked.
interestingly enough the Asia version also has different radio than the NZ version, the NZ has 2100 band, but the Asia one doesn't in its place it keeps most of the lower bands

longest i've taken i think is like 30 seconds for a lock outdoors
and that was from a cold start after i flashed a new rom

2100 is used here in NZ by vodafone but 2100 is used in loads of countries mainly through europe I think.

no problem as well, that's why i don't know why so many people are complaining about the GPS and "lag"
coming from Windows Mobile, this "lag" is nothing, GPS takes average 5~15 sec to pick up depending on weather, my old phone it takes 5 min to 1 hour to pick up
and waiting for the Windows software to load was always like an eternity, that's why iphone got so famous, because windows mobiles devices have always been slow, and i'm sure it will continue to be slow even with the same CPU, cuz my old phone was a 625Mhz CPU, and still didn't cut it, i OCed it to 650Mhz and it was not much better, but definitely noticeable... anyways.... the SGS i9000 is a dream to use.
GTA as well, 3G is mostly fine in most areas, but sometimes when you are down in the subway (the stations with open tunnels) it can't pick up 3G only G or Edge, and some parking lots
it is more a concern about traveling as, drive around Ontario/Quebec quite a bit, having the 850 band is a safety & bonus.
so if the new one from Bell works, i'll sell the UK i9000 version (sill in stock firmware but rooted)

I bought a used N1 on eBay. I totally wasn't even thinking about the fact that there are different models of the phone for different carriers. Turns out I have the T-Mobile N1, but I have AT&T service currently.
I assume that there is no kind of mod/firmware to get it to use AT&T 3G, and that it's the hardware that limits me to T-Mo? Probably more than some custom firmware or something could fix?
That kind of sucks, if so. I doubt anyone would have an AT&T model, looking for a T-Mo model, eh?

No, they don't. T-Mobile and Verizon use totally different radio technologies.
Go onto the Marketplace forum on XDA, and trade/sell it through there.

Also if you have trouble locating the AT&T compatible N1, you may also consider the Telus version of HTC Desire. Largely the same hardware, AT&T bands, but no Euro 2100 band.
Possible bonus: AT&T does not know the IMEI of Telus Androids, and might not force you to a higher cost smart phone data plan.

it has always been the T-Mobile version which is quite disappointing....
the AT&T version seem to just disappear from manufacturing all together
point I am trying to make is that it the AT&T version should be much rarer and possibly worth more on the market since there are less quantities of it

Yes, it will function on the network. The issue is that the radio hardware is built for specific frequencies, which differ between the T-Mobile and AT&T models.
You can use one phone on the other's network just fine as a phone, but you will be limited to 2G data speeds, as AT&T uses 850/1900MHz for their 3G data and T-Mobile uses 900 1700/2100MHz.
Umm, nobody uses 900 MHz for cellular in North America... that spectrum is not allocated for that purpose here.

You're right, my apologies. The fact of the matter (that the hardware is incompatible between the AT&T and T-Mobile networks) remains intact though.
Correct 3G data frequency information, as best I can make it out:
AT&T uses 850MHz and 1900MHz.
T-Mobile uses 1700MHz and 2100MHz.
900MHz and 2100MHz are used primarily in Europe; a phone made for European markets will have a better chance of being fully compatible with T-Mobile's network in the states based on sharing the 2100MHz band.
Closer but still not quite
Read up on the AWS band. European phones will not get T-Mobile 3G at all without 1700.
But in the specific case of the Nexus One, models sold in Europe do have AWS.

I just got the mytouch 4g and i wanted to sell my nexus one. But i wanted to double check and see if i can sell it to someone on the at&t network. I currently have tmobile. I thought the S-Off was to completely unlock the phone. So u can switch between carriers. Didnt know the frequency would be different. thank guyz. Damn u HTC.

I'm actually in the process of switching to T-Mobile, and I have an ATT model that I would potentially be interested in trading, but it's definitely not mint.
Hi, I've been a S4 user and a very intrigued reader on this website. XDA has taught me many great things about my Sprint S4. I'm now ready to make the leap to the Note 4 and I'm so confused with all of the different models available.
Here's what I want the phone to do:
- I live in the US, and I would like to set up the phone on the Straight Talk or AT&T network and I obviously want to take advantage of the fastest speeds Straight Talk/AT&T offers.
- I am traveling to England in the Summer for a month and I would like the phone to work on one of their networks. (I would like to have 4G, but if 3G is the only compatible band than that's fine, as long as I'm getting some sort of data).
- I travel to Canada on a monthly basis and I would like my Note 4 to be able to run on the Rogers Network and utilize the fast speeds Rogers offers.
Basically, which Note 4 model will satisfy my needs? I just want to take advantage of the fastest bands available in these places. I've been leaning towards the N910H because my understanding is that it is compatible with all of my above requirements. Is this true? If not, which model should I be look at?

I can't say for certain about Rogers Canada, but the US T-mobile variant- SM-910T- is what I have, and you should look into it. Maybe someone with Rogers can chime in about that.
It's 100% compatible with AT&T's fastest LTE bands and most 4G GSM bands used in Europe. It has an unlocked bootloader for easy rooting/ROM-flashing. There is an awesome XDA section devoted to it with some great ROMs and other tweaks. Of course, the major benefit is that if you stroll into a T-mobile store any buy one, it will have a warranty and service options if something were to possibly be wrong with it. Now, you'll need to get the phone SIM-unlocked either through T-mobile directly or an online sim-unlocking service (~ $20-30)
If you wanna spend less in the States, the 910T sells on craigslist, swappa, ebay, etc in pretty large numbers and it's very easy to obtain one in mint condition for a lot less than retail. Obviously, make sure that the device has a good IMEI through swappa.com before buying it used.
I find that lots of people buy the Note 4 and decide to sell it after a while- either they prefer something smaller, or an iPhone, or any number of other reasons like wanting extra cash, but there's tons of em on craigslist here in Chicago.
I bought a Sprint Note 4 in perfect condition from a guy for $350 the other week. Not saying you will necessarily have that type of luck, but just something to ponder.
i use 910U on rogers and AT&T gophone. also used it in the UK, most of europe and asia. this is an exynos taiwan variant with LTE. may not give you the fastest speeds everywhere but its awesome.
In the UK we get the Snapdragon 910F, but the 910H looks good according to the bands I've seen online (I don't know if they're correct mind!)
In the UK different networks use different bands (900, 1800, 2100, etc) for 3G; with some of the bands being shared amongst companies these days. Ideally you want a device that supports 900Mhz UTMS, and the 910H supports the band. The 900Mhz band has better indoor coverage than the higher frequencies as well.
Again 4G is on different bands depending on your provider, but the networks share most of the spectrum at the moment to reduce costs. I believe 4G is on 800, 1800, and 2600Mhz

IDK about LTE, but phones for China/HK will work on our 3G networks. I've tried a few 3G iphone knockoffs and had no issues.
