Auto rotation - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does Nexus 7 have auto rotation or not? When I turn it from vertical to horizontal, the screen does not change at all.

Yes it has auto rotate but it may not work for a couple of reasons:
It will not work on the "homepage" as for some reason, it is still not available to landscape your homepage.
If your in apps, like the broswer etc, then yes it should auto-rotate, but my Nexus 7 also had this turned off by default.
Goto your settings -> display -> auto rotate. (Im 90% sure its under display )
Make sure the box is ticked
Hope I helped

If you're wondering how to enable rotation on the launcher (homepage), you can do it a number of ways. If you don't want to root, you can install an app like ultimate rotation control from the play store. You can also install an alternate launcher like Apex or Nova.
If you want to root, you can flash a ROM that has tablet mode such as Paranoid Android. You can also edit the build.prop file but I wouldn't recommend the latter as it seems to have negative repercussions in system apps.

Very strange - there is no auto rotate option as per you described. Where does it go?

Easiest way, when you pull the notification bar down, you will see 2 Icons right at the top of the notification bar.
One will be three lines, with dots on them, which looks like the icon of the "Settings" app.
Next to that, you will see something with two arrows, and in the middle either like a screen of a device, or a padlock.
That is what you want to click, if the padlock is there, then rotation is locked, if you have the device screen, with the two arrows, auto rotate is enabled.
Hope this helps.

If you want more help download the application nova launcher.
Once you have nova, open it up and go to "look and fell". Once In there go Into screen orientation and click on auto-rotate.
When you finish do the command above, and it all should work

add this to the end of your build.prop file and reboot, then youll be able to autorotate your homescreen. no, adding this to your build.prop file will not hurt your device or cause issues as others here have stated..

Works great! Thank you!

The auto rotate is turned off when you have stock jelly bean. But if you pull down the menu you can change it there.

Apex Launcher does it too.
The cheapest way ist modifying the build.prop
An nice app but it cost is
look for "Ultimate Rotation Control" in app store
goes like hell

Don't use the rotation control app, at least not in auto or forced auto. It kills performance.

What is build.prop file and where is it to find for the modification?

RE
The Rotation Control app worked great on my Nexus 7.
I can't say the same for my GS3;
it kept resetting itself to "Forced Auto".
The build.prop method is easy, and works mostly well.
My only problem seems that the Play Store app always crashes when the screen rotates in the app drawer. I'm not sure yet if it happens anywhere else, but so far everything else is good.
The build.prop file is in the "/system/" folder, and you'll need root access to get to it.
Once rooted, get ES File Explorer from the app store.
You'll need to enable "Root Explorer", "Up to Root" and "Mount File System" in the app's "Root Settings" to reach and edit the build.prop.
Once you find the build.prop file in the /system/ folder, you can press it and choose to open it with ES Note Editor.
!!!!! WARNING !!!!!
Before you start messing with the build.prop file,
you'd be smart to make a nandroid backup in CWM.
The slightest typo or mistake can cause your device to not boot up.
You've been warned...!
!!!!! END WARNING !!!!!
But, assuming you add the line accurately to the bottom of your build.prop, you'll be ok.

also, in case you mess something up in you build.prop file, any kind of edit, not just this, you can just reflash your current ROM(no wiping of anything) without anykind of data loss or repercussions. well, OK, one repercussion, a loss of about 3-4 minutes

Auto Rotate

I installed the froyo beta, and ever since then, my phone won't auto rotate anymore. Ive already ODINed back to stock, it still wont work Any ideas or help?
-Edit-
I downloaded Accelerometer Test to make sure that the accelerometer wasn't busted. It's working fine. The phone just will not rotate.
Only two things I can think of:
1: Go to settings > Sound and Display > Make sure Orientation is checked.
2: (If using Launcher Pro). Menu button while on homescreen > Preferences > Behavior Settings > make sure Enable Auto-rotation is checked.
Other than that, no idea :\

On stock, the homescreens wont rotate unless the keyboard is slid out.
Is it rotating on the browser and on pictures?

No. And if i slide the keyboard out, it rotates. But then it gets stuck in landscape unless i go to something that forces portrait mode, such as the home screen.

Ah if its even getting stuck in landscape mode than its got to be something framework or .apk related.
Beats me, sorry man :\ Hope someone is able to help you more so than I could.

THANK YOU! I had the same problem and this fixed it. Of course, i had to root my shizzle again. By chance did anyone with this problem run the Froyo 2.2 built-in calibration before this came about?
Oh wow, thank you so much!! The fix using the terminal emulator totally worked for me too, I thought I was going to have to go back to stock to see if it would fix itself! After running the lines in the terminal, it still wouldn't automatically detect orientation, so went to the display settings, unchecked orientation, and checked it again, and now works perfectly! The lack of orientation was so frustrating, especially after using the keyboard and the only way to fix it was turning off the screen... thanks again!

Just wanted to bump this. I had issues with auto rotation broken after going to DK28 and downgrading back to DI18.
I didn't test if it fixed it or not, however it did remove the annoying lag on DK28 when the screen rotates. Only reason I was downgrading

How to change DPI for S View window?

I changed my system DPI but it's causing the S View window content to be resized too. I have App Manager Xposed that can change per app DPI too. Which app controls the S View display? I dont want to switch the entire system back.
I've just had a look through the list and can't find anything directly to do with it either. Have you tried changing the TouchWiz DPI in xposed app settings, perhaps it's tied to the launcher?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
This is killing me trying to figure it out. I really prefer a 340 DPI but I can't stand the undersized S-View window. I've changed everything I can think of in per app but the only way I can get the S-View window back to fit the case in reverting the entire device DPI. I'm starting to suspect it might be embedded in the systemUI.apk.

For previous devices (and I think this will work with the Note 3), I used ROM Toolbox Pro:
http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/75886567/file.html
Once you have installed this program, follow these steps to change the DPI:
1)Open the application
2) select build.prop Editor
3) Search for ro.sf.lcd_density
4) Select the first option and then from this menu, select property value
5) Enter the new property value and click on done
6) When saving, it will ask if you wish to reboot, select no
7) Select second option for ro.sf.lcd_density and then from this menu, select property value
8) Enter the same values as you did previously in step 5
9) Click on done
10) When prompted, reboot the device
Once the device reboots, you should have your desired DPI. I think there may be options for SView within this program as well but not too sure as I usually had people do all the mods for me as I'm quite new to this myself.

That will set the DPI globally though, not just for that one particular component. It may need a logcat to find the process that calls up the S-View when activated to pin it down.

I appreciate your response but I think you missed the point. We have already changed the devices entire DPI to our liking using that method. The problem now is that we want to use App settings Xposed module to change JUST the S-View window back to stock but we don't know which APK controls the S-Window DPI.

I did actually and that didn't do it. Thanks for the suggestion. I did however find that the lock screen and subsequently the S-View window are controlled by the AndroidSystem.apk. So it's not as easy as I had hoped. Hopefully somebody smarter than me would be able to decompile the apk and adjust just the DPI for the lockscreen specifically (if thats even possible) or possibly make a module for Xposed that changes the lock screen DPI separately. As of right now there is no way to change it using App Settings without changing the entire AndroidSystem.apk

That sucks (for you at least, I don't have the S-View) I'd have thought seeing as Android all fairly modular, that there would be something that wouldn't involve global changes for that one component.

sview
Hi,
I am not sure about note 3, But for Samsung Mega and Samung s4, the sview file xml lies in the framework-res.apk in System/Framework
So.. open the apk using the smali tools.. and change the layout of the sview there.
It might help.

This package does not exist on my Verizon Note 3 (rooted MI9 software)
Download app settings from Xposed
Search sview
Apply the DPI to 480
The only issue after that is trying to adjust the camera from the S-View screen. The buttons will be out of place but I didn't bother changing the DPI and left it
Good as it gets for now

[Q] Force list view in settings

In the device settings on the G2 you have the four tabs on top of the screen when you're in the settings page.
If you hit menu, you can change it to list view. However this resets back to tab view every time you close it, then you have to hit menu again, and change to list view.
Is there any ay to change to list view permanently, or force it?
This is something that would be perfect to mod with Xposed in my mind if there isn't a native function for this.

Oh what really? Crap I always thought that it would save your preference.
At least it does that on the G Pro...if this is true then I'll definitely have to get the Verizon G2. Can't stand the sight of those ugly Crapwiz tabs.
It could just be mine not saying it properly. It does feel like something that should save.

Seriously?! Haha! But you're on a D802?! So there must be a setting somewhere. Or do you have an Xposed module that could be responsible?

It's must be your phone. That option working perfectly fine for me on stock(before) and Rayglobe ROM(since yesterday)
I'm running stock ROM with Xposed Framework, CWM Recovery. I'm rooted.
Is it possible that some Xposed module is causing this?
I'm finding it has something to do with which launcher you use... stock saves it, nova, google experience, etc. doesn't... looking for a fix, but haven't found one.
Switch to list view in stock launcher and choose do not show again ok. Then switch to other launcher of your choice.

[ solved ] Nova Launcher prime - double tap to sleep - how to?

as the title says - how to enable double tap to sleep (screen off) using gestures in Nova Launcher prime?
i know it has something to do with assigning an activity via Nova Launcher gestures, but i can't find any activity that relates to screen off or sleep...
any help is appreciated...
note:
i know how to do this using an extra app "Screen Off and Lock", but i just wanted to know is there a posibility to avoid any extra apps to achieve the same thing...

i think you posted this in the same time i was writing the "note" part in my post
I think not. If i remember, it worked well without 3rd party app, but now it is "disabled". Anyway, here is another guide:
"The Nova Launcher option
Another app that functions very similarly to the way you’d use Apex Launcher is*Nova Launcher. The same as you did for the first method, you will only be able to use this one if you also installed Greenify on the device. Therefore, you should go to the Google Play store and look for these two tools and install them.
Whenever you’re ready, check the steps below:
Open Nova Launcher and go to its Settings.Click on Gestures and Buttons and scroll down to Gestures.Select Double Tap and wait for the Choose Action menu to load.Go to Shortcuts, and then click on Hibernate and Lock Screen.
You may have noticed before that selecting the right settings in the first application is going to automatically send you to the second app you need to use. In this case,*Greenify will open*a new discussion and ask you to authorize Nova to use your screen.
You should go under the Automator and click on Allow Greenfy, and then confirm this option by pressing Activate. You’re now good to go and can test if the display is working properly by double tapping to send it to sleep."

Easy, you don't need to use a 3rd party app. Just doubletap the status bar to sleep
You can do this in every app, whenever you want to sleep just double tap status bar

i even had double tap navbar to sleep (g3twb) which worked well until i started using 5 buttons navbar making it harder to hit the blank area...
It looks like you may need first of all nova launcher prime, after that , you may need greenify as well. Here is what i did and it works.
1 . Go to Nova settings>gestures and input>double tap
2 . swipe right to the shortcuts tab and then go down you may find "hibernate + lockscreen"
3 . Assign it and it works!
double tap to sleep is working for me.
hope this helps.

From the apps that I have Tasker and GravityBox can do screen off/sleep. And if you are using them already that doesn't count as an extra app, right?

Oh man, you should try tasker. It's what puts SMART in smartphone. Was messing around today with it. I found an old buss ticket that can work as nfc tag and put it on my phone holder on bicycle. I have set it to trigger launching Strava app, turning on GPS, setting brightness to max and forcing landscape mode for that app. And when I exit app, BAM, it reverts everything back the way it was. It's like slide and click instead of multiple actions. Might be overly excited about it right now, and definitely off topic here, but had to mention it hehe. I hope you will find a way to use that gesture the way you want, everything is possible on android

no vibers, no hangouts, no skypes, no syncs - some calls, few sms messages... (i mostly communicate through google chat and emails while on pc since most of my work depends on beeing on pc anyway)
i read articles, browse and listen to music 90% of the time...
call me old fashioned - but i still love to have some "human manual control" over things on my device

Question: screen overlay detected... How do I fix it?

Hi,
I am trying to use Waze on my phone, but the app won't open as it keeps saying screen overlay detected. I have gone into my settings and turned off the overlay for all the apps apart from the system apps. But it is still not working.
I have tried searching on Google, and don't have any of the apps installed like twilight, luxe or Facebook which are supposed to be causing the problem.
Any other suggestions on how to fix it?
Cheers

Not that I am aware of unless it is a stock app? Do you have any examples of the apps?

Are you using swipe home, if so deactivate and enable the other app and then enable swipe home.

Not sure what swipe home is? It's not listed under apps, I usually press the middle button to get to the home screen

Screen Balance (which adjusts screen colour balance/tint) and which I recommended in another thread creates an overlay.
Certain apps will not function properly unless SB is turned off.

It's not a stock app it's a downloaded app from the play store.
I usually turn off off all the apps using it and turn it on after... It's a frustrating issue but what are you going to do.
If it's bothering you find a good Rom, for example Superman Rom, Overlays was removed as it's too much if s hassle

It has nothing to do with any of that, it's Google's fault. You can flash a fix which is in Phoenix rom thread or go back to a previous stock rom

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. Screen Balance is an app, separate to the UI's adjustments.
I had the same overlay issue, what I did that Ive disabled all the apps altogether, and switched them on back one by one, discovered that an application called Swipe Home Button Ive installed was responsible,so I have uninstalled after which everything was normal.
Is it safe to turn off the overlay for the system installed apps? I have turned off the overlay for all other apps that I have installed
The app that was causing me this problem after this weekend's AT&T software update was Bing. I Uninstalled it and all was fine.
How I finally fixed the "Screen Overlay" problem on my S7 edge.
The easiest fix, only full fix, I have found is as follows. When the screen overlay screen opens in settings, just turn everything marked on to off. Which by the way is the only thing you can do on this screen. Since I did all my apps, even the ones that weren't working, are working as they should. Hope this helps someone.
As Richie and Monigote stated, flash the screen overlay fix from Phoenix ROM. LoL pay attention please

even when I tried to turn overlay off for all apps mine still was going wrong and I couldn´t use some apps...the only way I got this fixed was making a reset (from the configs options it self) from all my configurations, just configurations, not all data in the phone, it works fine for now...
now I´m with problem with my mobile data connection, I don´t know if it´s from my brand or my phone...

The message about overlay detected i have seen and experienced a number of times.
BUT the only time this has occurred is when i was using SideSync
i.e. I am using it to Remote control the device using my PC
or am using my PC to display my Phone within my PC screen (So i can use my phone while using the PC)
The warning was being presented by some apps because SideSync was overlaying the screen to mirror it to my PC screen)
As soon as i disconnected this message stopped.
Not am not saying your using SideSync, But any other app you have installed that can mirror / allow remote access or displaying your phone screen on another device like PC may be causing the problem

Did Pokemon enable the game overlay?
Small controller icon that comes up when games like Pokemon are playing - that could be your issue.
Settings / Advanced Features / Games / Games Tools = disable
