Greetings to you all.
THis is my first post here, and I would appreciate any help.
I am considering buying an HTC touch HD from eBay. I found that the cheapest ones are those listed in eBay.co.uk, and locked to Orange UK. However, the price difference compared to the phones which are factory unlocked made me think whether there is something wrong with the Orange UK phones.
To be specific, I have two questions:
1- Do Orange UK HTC-HD phones have different specs compared to other HTC-HD phones?
2- Are Orange UK HTC-HD phones guaranteed to be unlockable? If yes, could they be re-locked again after a ROM upgrade? will they work (after unlocking) on all GSM networks worldwide?
Again, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance.
To Orange or not to Orange!

1- I believe the Orange hardware specs are exactly the same. It's just the ROM/software that they play with.
2- Every phone should be SIM unlockable. I have seen many reports in this forum that they can be. You can easily replace an Orangised ROM with a cooked one or WWE stock ROM to remove any unwanted Orange stuff.... all you'll be left with is the little orange logo on the back. There is no need to SIM unlock the phone to upgrade the ROM. Check out the HSPL / USPL threads to see what must be done and how easy it is to ROM upgrade.
I have an Orange HD (still locked) running the non Orange HK 1.19 ROM
I have a Orange handset, i use orange so im not bothered about simunlock, ive removed the orange software and put Duttys 1.7 on at moment.
i believe there are a few vendors that can provide guaranteed (or your money back) unlock codes for around 18euros
I've had an Orange Touch HD for almost two weeks now and it seems fine. I flashed it with Duttys ROM and that improved things like RAM usage and stuff, but added its own little annoyances.
Go with the Orange, you wont regret it!!
I have an orange sim locked one... but as I am an orange customer I am happy.
Dutty's v1.7 rom is the current flavour.
Thank you all for your quick response. this will definitely help me out ...
One last question before I actually make a bid: Has anyone unlocked his/her Orange Touch-HD phone and used it on a different network outside UK?
Bought a HD ORANGE (UK) on ebay, unlocked it with code (htccode) and now im usin it in slovenia
Thank you so much
I will start bidding.. will let you know if anything went wrong!
I bought an Orange one from eBay a few weeks ago. Got it for £370 with a Best Offer. I had previously won another one which was described as 'brand new in box' but had a scratched screen and obvious signs of use!
Make sure you get what you payed for!! I had to do a PayPal dispute as this person was adamant they hadn't used it... despite the pouch being fluffy, the earphones having the furry covers on, and various scratches! Needless to say, they had it back on eBay as BNIB the next day again!
Anyway - my second one arrived still with the original screen warning protector, and I got a best offer on the unlock code on eBay for £14. The code came through within a few hours, and I typed it in twice and it worked perfectly. I then updated the ROM to Dutty's - as the Orange one was a bit naff - and stuck in my O2 SIM card! As with Dutty's ROMs on my old Diamond, it instantly knew it was an O2 SIM I'd put in, and asked me if I wanted to install the settings - which I did. A simple soft reset and my WAP / MMS settings etc were all sorted!
Orange phones are definately the cheapest, as people are taking them as a free upgrade and selling them on - because they're probably the phone thats worth the most at the moment!! The only downer is the naff Orange logo on the back cover which won't come off no matter what I scrubb it with! Their old ones wiped clean with some label remover or paint stripper
Can someone please take a picture of the Orange logo on the back? How big and gawdy is it?
i dont really like the orange logo on this one either, since the back cover is the same microsatin finish as the touch dual i had, its not gonna be possible to remove it.
its not very big, but a sudden orange square kind of spoils the "blackness" of the device.
im assuming there is no free unlock solution yet....
anyone know the cheapest place to get it unlocked? if its on ebay, could you give a link to the seller? im a bit cautious cos i've had some dodgy ones in the past thanks!
Orange HD Upgrade
I got my HD free as an Orange upgrade through mobiles.co.uk this week. Was very happy to find that Orange had not been let near this phone. Haven't even got the silly logo on the back and it's unlocked. I think they get them direct from HTC.

It's 1cm square or 1 square cm!
Damn....looks like I'll be looking for an un-branded phone then....
cant u just buy a new back cover off ebay and get rid of the logo that way?
My orange logo is less than 7mm squared!
I bought a replacement battery cover from eBay about a week ago, and it just arrived the other day. It was an 'original htc HD cover' from Hong Kong for £15.
It certainly looks original, and all the stuff inside is the same - but its missing the volume buttons, the power button, and the speaker grill bit. It also comes with the camera cover as a seperate bit you need to glue on!
A waste of £15 if you ask me - unless I can send it back to Hong Kong (which will probably cost me heaps anyway!!)
I got a fairly good deal with mine on Orange (£20 /month 500min, 100txt 3 magic numbers and phone for £95) so i dont see anything wrong with buying from orange. The phone works fine and specs are the same.
I have a Orange HTC HD as well...not anymore, new ROM(original HTC) and new HTC battery cover from expansys.com. Works fine...I'm on O2, I hate Orange very much gf using orange, poor customer service and poor reception, I give them a F with a - as a Mobile Network Provider.
My baby HD works and looks great after I got it back to the original HTC look thanks to the guys at xda-developers.com
See pic of Orange logo on the back of the phone, you also get a I must admit nice Orange splash screen which I removed when installed my new original HTC ROM678
Thanks for the photo. I'd rather do without the orange logo if I had a choice.
I'm currently looking for one, but all the UK sellers require a verified UK paypal address, which I don't have. I have a UK Aramex address, but of course it's not verified since I'm abroad.
Just buy the battery cover HTC original after you buy your phone. I think I payed for mine £23. Looksa good, from HTC or expansys.com.
GL!!
Just got my Airtel Carrier - HTC Hero (unlocked) 2.73.720.5
Im surprised that everyone besides India have a 2.73.4xx firmware. Is it just me or did India get a smaller updated edition (revision) compared to the rest of the world, or is this just Airtel's doing of a little extra in the firmware/rom.
After running from WM to the iPhone, Ive finally made peace (hopefully) with the HTC Hero (Android). Being an avid Star Trek Fan...all I can say is I've got "Data" - what about you all
I did my little share of forum searching, but I couldnt find a single post regarding the Airtel HTC Hero (the last HTC Magic was locked with that stupid and insanely painful SPL), so my question begins with
1) Is the Airtel HTC Hero using another crazy SPL?
2) If so, what guide should I follow for unlocking (ability to ROM upgrade/change)
3) I can confirm that we are NOT locked to SIMCARDS - I can use my Idea Cellular Simcard just fine.
Added questions include - are there "Kitchens" like we used to have for Windows Mobile ?
Hope someone can help me out here - I'd love to be part of the ol' Cooking & Chef team
Nice to know that Airtel has brought in the latest version of the ROM.
Did you buy it with the Airtel dealer OR from a conventional distributor. At Bangalore, it is priced at 32K. How much did it cost you?? I am more of a palm guy...the palm pre just does not seem to come out.
I paid 33,600 actually Couldnt get a better deal and didn't want to wait a few more days since I'm off to USA tomorrow (rdosti = shivam)
Performance
Guys,
I am planning to buy Hero through Airtel and have a few questions,
1. Is the airtel version unlocked ?
2. Should I buy from Airtel or open market ?
3. Any reasons not to buy it ? Performance ? sluggishness ?
and lastly, is it simple to update the firmware, I am very keen on the new Android 2.0 update for the new google GPS app.
thanks in advance,
Jaspreet
Only the first part of 2.73.xxx.x bit matter. The "xxx.x" refer to carrier and regional customization, the ROM is basically the same.
have same phone, in China.
Hi,
Did you root the phone? I have the same phone, but i bought it in China for 3100 rmb. I'm trying, and im stuck on downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)
im going through this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
Hope it works. ill post results later.

Well after much swithering I've decided to replace my iPhone 3G with an HTC HD2, I've gone for it over a Nokia N900 or Google Nexus One as it to me seems the better device than the N900 and also has worked out much cheaper than importing the N1 from the United States.
Couple of queries, its brand new and sealed from someone who upgraded on T-Mobile, does anyone know if T Mobile UK include the pouch for the HD2 that comes with it elsewhere?
Also what should I do first when I get my device, I know there are a wide range of ROM's and cooked ROMs, etc what is the best one to use?

I read somewhere that T-Mobile data can be restrictive in what it will and won't let you use, like IM clients, etc is this the case?
i'm not on t-mobile, i tried to be of some help regarding your 2nd question
Hi folks,
I own a Galaxy S with a Cyanogenmod9 ICS ROM (which is amazing and works like a charm, by the way)
The phone is now 1 1/2 year old ans shows a massive burn in that's even visible in normal usage.
I called Samsung for a repair and they told me they will do it.
Now my question is: Which ROM should I flash before sending the device into repair. There are so many official and unofficial kernels around and I lost track of.
Another issue: F***ing Amazon sold me some eastern European model instead of a German one (forgot the exact country), so the newest ROM for Germany might not be apply to my device as it may be not yes available in eastern Europe.
I don't want Samsung to tell me I fiddled around with the ROMs and refusing the warranty.
Maybe a not so recent ROM would be the best!?
Thanks for any answer and thanks to the Cyanogenmod team for their great work.
Paul
Please help me clarify my below queries..
- Are there any disadvantages like - the OS or something will have chinese language which cannot be changed etc?
- What is the customs tax for importing to India (anyone tried importing to India from gearbest/geekbuying etc)? I dont want the customs tax bloating up the total price of the price of locally available other equivalent models like one plus two/one..
- What things should I adjust to live with if I import from china instead of buying an international phone or my country version
I'm not sure about India specifically, but for me in the UK the only way to get the Note 2 was via a reseller.
The installed ROM was poor and had various bloatware in it that the international official ROM does not. I would recommend getting rid of it right away. You can flash either the stock stable ROM or the developer edition which will also give you root access if you need it. I will be using the fastboot method to flash a ROM as soon as i get within reach of a PC to make sure my phone is malware free.
Sorry, I can't comment on import duties, perhaps someone else will chip in.

Thanks! That was a great info ! So you mean I dont have to worry even if the Redmi Note 2 I get has some other ROM i can flash to better one.
Let me see if anyone else reply with other questions I have. I am also concerned about what i will do if the device is defective whether shops like gearbest give a replacement, etc.
where can I get the international official rom ?
Have a look on http://en.miui.com/ for info on downloading the MIUI ROMs as well as how to flash, either from the updater software on the phone, recovery, or from a PC (such as in fastboot mode).
Any more replies ?

I think you are right. I downloaded the official 'global' ROM from MIUI but it only has English and Chinese languages. Normally their international ROMs are multi language.
For international rom:http://en.miui.com/thread-157254-1-1.html
Donwload:https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347808405
The biggest problem is the time it takes for shipping. I bought mine from a HK shop on eBay because I dropped my LG G2 and needed it fast, so I paid a little more.
Even the China ROM comes with English, so don't worry.
You just have to read up on my previous posts or look at the MIUI forum to figure out how to install GAPPS, TWRP recovery + SuperSU.
Once you delete the chinese bloatware it is just like any other english android device. Except for the MIUI theme store which is still in Chinese.
