Motorola says they will make the bootloader of the razr unlockable! (The android phone, not the other one) Check out the link here.
For those of you who are too lazy to read the whole thing, I summarised the whole article.
1. Razr first phone to include the fully implemented lock/unlock bootloader software in it.
2.Once Motorola launched the razr in their global markets, they will have a list of the models that will be unlocked displayed on their motodev.com website.
3.Mobile operators/carriers can opt out to having this software on their phone
4.Verizon has opt out. (Doesn't affect me personally but still unhappy)
So now, pressure your carriers!!
Also, hopefully, moto will also unlock their other phones. (Not that we need it now)
That's the thing, carriers still want the BLs locked down.
Why is there such a struggle with Motorola, but not Samsung with this?...

Is there a possibility that samsung has it easier because they pressure carriers themselves? Perhaps by having a variant of the Galaxy S2 on each carrier they can use that to their advantage. They just say "if you don't allow us to have an unlocked bootloader on your network then people will go to someone that will."
With phones like the Razr they can't cause it exclusive. I'm probably way off but it's just a thought.

I hope they unlock all of their phones as I just bought myself an atrix 2 and can't wait to start flashing.
Guess for now I'll have to stick with playing with the old atrix.
The a2 is great but what phone couldn't be better.

Hmmm. Good point there. Also, the Droid name is owned by Verizon and not Motorola so thee do have quite little say in the matter. Hopefully the software from the global razr can be ported to the Verizon one.

They did say they will start unlocking bootloaders late 2011, and seem to be keeping with the plan. They also say the razr will be the first phone to be unlocked, followed by other devices. So maybe early next year your wish will come true!
As was already said, the key here is that the carriers will have the option to opt out. Motorola could have given us an unlocked bootloader anytime they wanted on the Atrix, but were/are held back by carriers and their contracts. So in reality, not a damned thing is changing unless you choose to purchase a full price non-carrier specific phone in the future which will have this option.
I view this as purely marketing on Motorola's part, as they are offering up nothing that they haven't had the ability to provide at any other time previous to this announcement.
it should be policy to unlock bootloaders once they decide not to bring future updates. what do you guys think?
in my country they just passed a law where it is forbidden to lock phones to carriers; if you have a locked phone, you can just bring it to the carrier you want to use and they have to unlock it for free.
imagine if motorla announced no ICS for atrix, then i could just bring it to an at&t tech service and demand they unlock BL for free and without worrying about bricking my phone.

You're thinking of SIM Lock and not bootloader unlock. They are 2 completely separate things.
i know the difference
what i was trying to say is that it would be cool if there was a law such the one i described, that applied to locked bootloaders.
Base Blue Chronic 4
I just installed the Home Base Blue Chronic 4 and I have to say its fantastic...
I noticed that there is an update to 6.2 but it says its tailored for version 5??
Am I safe in installing it? I did not see a blue chronic version 5 to download...
Thank you
I wish they would just unlock everything and not give the carriers the option. One can dream...

Hey everyone,
I stumbled across this tonight and the sentence below got my attention.
The bill will restore a copyright exemption that allows customers (or authorized third parties) to modify a phone's firmware, removing the restrictions that most carriers place on their phones.
As of today, Americans can legally unlock their phones again
http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/1/5959915/president-barack-obama-signing-phone-unlocking-bill
Would that mean that we should be allowed to get a bootloader unlock regarding what att supports and doesn't support?
That would be awesome. Now just gotta wait and see if the carriers and manufacturers actually follow through with this or will only follow through with it on New Devices and leave the older ones to rot.
Tell me if I'm wrong but doesn't this only apply to carrier unlock. Has nothing to do with bootloaders

I think you're right but when I read in the article all that stuff about unlocking more stuff more than just the Sim. That definitely got me interested to read this bill. They'll try to resist but who knows.

I thought the same thin until I saw this line, "The bill will restore a copyright exemption that allows customers (or authorized third parties) to modify a phone's firmware, removing the restrictions that most carriers place on their phones" Plus as it stands most carries will carrier unlock a phone after a year anyway. Or you can say hey I am going out of country and need this phone unlocked and they will usually do it if they have the ability to do so. Sometimes they say they can't carrier unlock them because they are too knew blah blah. Either way you can legally carrier unlock a phone anyway it's when you get into firmware modding that it say's you void your warranty so I am guessing this bill if all goes as it should would get rid of the void warranty to some extent.
I very much doubt that. It's for the regional lock that became "illegal" last year. It was all over the news. Now that the petition hit 100,000 vote they had to legalize it again. But hey I'd go with the bootloader unlock. Why not. Hell I'm smacking a cyanogenmod rom to my phone as soon as the bootloader is unlocked. Lol
This is for carrier region unlock only. Nothing more. It's the same unlock that WAS legal until over a year ago by the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) it passed Congress and you can now legally unlock your phone for other carriers. Doesn't have anything to do with bootloader. Your carrier may not unlock if still on contract but it's no longer illegal to go through a 3rd party if you need unlock for overseas travel (for instance) and need to use a different dim to avoid international rates through your regular carrier. It sounds good and all but won't apply to many who are under contract anyway or happy with their carrier. When unlocking a phone you are technically editing hardware so that's why the word firmware is used. It's "broad" form is all....legal jargon if you will.
Bootloader isn't happening as a result of this. But maybe someday it won't matter who knows.
Thread cleaned of political comments and profanity
And as others have said...this has nothing to do with bootloader..it is unlocking sim to other carriers or regions.
The carriers still have all rights to lock down phones from tampering.
Reported for a signed petition to take off "(Bootloader)" Lol.
Based on the fact that this is clearly NOT referring to the bootloader, and due to the inordinately large volume of mod action already needed on this tiny thread, I've deleted the "(Bootloader)" from the title. It is misleading and unnecessary.
Thanks & most certainly carry on discussing the good news about carrier unlocking that this is.
Yea bootloader will never ever happen... it was bogus that before this if you couldn't buy an unlock code and use your phone "legally".
Let's hope the carriers honor this and provide unlock codes without many hoops...
It says unlocked for CARRIER, but you think it will be unlockable bootloader too, like the one from Google?

Comes with $100 gift card + 3 months free Mint + no tax in many states, so there is some reason to get it from here instead. Anyone have experience buying carrier-unlocked Pixels from B&H before, if they had unlockable bootloaders?

That wasn't the case with the Pixel 3 at launch, though. Back then, to get unlockable bootloader, you had to order from Google directly. Is it different now?

The OP is asking about bootloader unlock (developer and root friendly). Everything you've said screams carrier unlock.
The bootloader is the low level piece of software on your device that loads the OS (Android) and everything else. It comes locked on every device for security and prevents unauthorized OS code from loading. This is completely separate from being carrier unlocked which allows you to use the device on any cellular carrier. Being able to unlock it and load any OS code has meant purchasing the device directly from Google in the past. Verizon devices for example never allowed the bootloader to be unlocked.
For the OP, since very few people understand the difference between those two things (even Google support), it will likely be a case where people will need to buy the device from B&H to find out.

Since you're so sure this is true, please go help all of the Verizon device owners who post looking to unlock the bootloader. You could start with this recent Pixel 3XL post.
Of course, there is also the history that dates back to at least Nexus 6 days where the Verizon bootloader is locked.
Where people have really gotten bitten, is replacement devices that have come back after repairs with a unlockable bootloader like the Verizon devices have.

This. Verizon Pixel 2 official and any RMA Pixel 2 is not bootloader unlockable. As someone who has been through 4 until Google finally sent me a brand new Google-made Pixel 2, non Verizon, non RMA.
I haven't seen any reason to say Pixel 4 Verizon is easily unlockable.

You have clearly never tried to bootloader unlock a Verizon device or you have some significantly different tools to do so and should share them with the community.
As others have pointed out, plenty of devices across the Pixel generations remain bootloader locked to this day. There are certainly smatterings of success stories with specific firmware versions but these are quickly patched.
There was recently some people that were able to unlock their Verizon Pixel 3a/XL modes after getting Verizon to carrier unlock them. But it has been attributed to a batch of MEID# that were likely incorrectly made available to bootloader unlock. Those people basically won the lottery. It certainly does not signal a change in Verizon's policy.
The best strategy is to have this mentality - if you buy a phone from Verizon (or any Verizon model phone) plan on it being permanently bootloader locked.

On non carrier specific devices, it's easy. On Verizon Google devices, it's rarely possible, and any vulnerability that's found is patched fast.
An authoritative statement like your post was is a problem. It has the potential to confuse the issue for people who come here for information, find an erroneous post and think they can safely buy a carrier device, still getting the bootloader unlocked.
Verizon was always a **** regarding unlocking bootloaders, they still haven't changed unfortunately.

Yes. One does have to wonder what the bootloader unlock situation will look like now that the Pixel will be available from all carriers directly rather than just Verizon. Google still only lists Verizon as the only carrier specific option on their store. We will likely have to wait and see if the other carriers get unlockable bootloaders or not.
Hello, my friends. I am not user of Motorola/Lenovo all time but i decided to buy Moto G, an phone i had used 2 years from 2014-2016 and i was back then very satisfied.
Week ago i bought Moto G 3G/falcon for 20€ and i was very happy i am back with my old and very good device.
First thing which impressed me before buying this device how many custom roms is for Moto G so my primary target - root and custom roms.
It looks very good. I have again my cute Moto wow, i was very surprised, but... First obstacle, no 4G, nevermind.
This device ended with support at android 5.1.1 which also lag and i dont remember it so slow even before in 2016 i remember i had 5.0.2 on it but very smooth, so i think its old device i dont care, i will try some of many custom ROMs from XDA.
Day later after buy i wanted to unlock bootloader. No success and after reading many sites, i tried everything, but i am ended with motorola official page and same message in email from their support.
First noticed sentence: We love our developers.
Second:
"Bootloader unlock codes may not be available for older phones. If an unlock is not available, it will show as not qualified for bootloader unlock."
Attached photos from their page below post.
This is my last Moto/Lenovo device. First and last factor for not support for unlock bootloader ? What a cringe... Apple doing similiar thing like slowing down older devices but they got fat penalties as i know. I can understand not supporting official updates but this is so limiting and stupid!
Sony can be unlocked4ever. I am wondering how long time i can unlock bootloader for all sony devices, sometimes you can buy Sony with not unlockable bootloader but its one from 100 thousand pieces for example.
Dont buy older devices from motorola if you wanna root. I will never again.

Most older Moto devices were carrier-branded, and have agreements with the carriers that the bootloader would not be eligible for bootloader unlocking.
Although Moto still has these same agreements with carriers, most newer models are available unbranded, which can be bootloader unlocked.
It's certainly possible that the model you had previously was allowed to be bootloader unlocked, and the model you now have never could be unlocked.
The list of supported devices has never been accurate, and many models that can be unlocked have never been on the official list.
You can check the list of CIDs, to see if your model should be eligible for bootloader unlocking, that is pretty clear.
If your CID is on the list as eligible, try the unlocking steps.
Mote, the moto unlocking site is very buggy and many people get a reply that their device can not be unlocked.
if you get this message just keep trying, it should work eventually.

The age of the Motorola smartphone has no relevance whatsoever in regards to official bootloader unlocking support. Unless the device is an ineligible carrier branded model, the bootloader is fully supported for unlocking, regardless of when it was manufactured. As @sd_shadow pointed out, don't purchase a carrier branded Motorola device if you want to unlock and customize your smartphone. Most Sprint (Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Republic Wireless, etc.) and T-Mobile branded Motorola devices are eligible for unlocking per their agreements with Motorola. As a general rule, however, Verizon, AT&T (Cricket) & TracFone (Net10 & StraigjtTalk) branded devices are ineligible for unlocking, per contractual agreements with Motorola. Of course, the safest wager is always a retail/factory unlocked smartphone purchased directly through Motorola or a reputable retailer.
Although this is an older post, perhaps the info will be useful to members not aware of Motorola's unlocking policies regarding certain carrier branded models.
When I bought my Moto E4 I unlocked it through Motorola's website. I was happy with the phone and bought a second one as a backup but didn't unlock it at the time. Both phones were purchased brand new.
I've dropped the first phone which cracked the screen and now I'm trying to setup the second phone. But I've found that Motorola no longer allows this model to be unlocked with an error message on the website:
Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.

To verify whether or not the process had changed, I also tried the unlock data for the old phone which previously worked fine but it too now is reported as "not qualifying".
It seems as though Motorola has completely revoked any ability to unlock these phones despite them being fully paid for.
Is there any other way to unlock the bootloader this phone?
Both phones are USA Qualcomm model perry XT1766 which I have verified on the bootloader screen. There should be no issue unlocking these.
The phone I purchased was sold by Boost Mobile. I spoke with Motorola Level III technical support and was told that I can't unlock this phone because it is a carrier phone.
They have changed their policy. This phone was previously unlockable and either by the request of Boost or planned obsolescence by Motorola this phone's bootloader can no longer be unlocked.
I paid for this phone but Motorola has asserted that I don't own it. I can't unlock the phone anymore due to a change of policy. This is disgusting.
