I just got my new hd2 yesterday and have just discovered there is no wifi router app.
O2 must have blocked this app - Bas***ds.
Anyone any ideas of how i can install this feature?
do a search and you`ll find the app posted here somewhere ....
I`ll try and find it for you now....

copy the .cab file to your storage card and run it form file explorer.....install to device....
+1 Cheers, will give it a go.
BTW, O2 gave me a the wifi bolton FOC as well as the Unlimited net when I kicked up a fuss. How do I use their cloud WIFI service?

Hi,
Link is in post #2.
Thank you, That answered my question I was wondering today about too. Lame they took it out when it was a main feature I bought the phone for. Thanks for posting it.
I did this install. I have the WiFi app installed, and running. Screen says WiFiSharing running, and ready to accecpt connections. But, when I go to my PC's, neither of them see this router. They see my home router, and several of the neighbors' routers, but not on my HD2. What could I be missing?
Try to stop the wifi router apllication and start again. It happens to my sometimes.
You can try also this, for me it worked:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5988689#post5988689
That link solved my problem. My default name for the router did not have a blank in it, but just changing the name of the router for some reason made it visible. Thanks for the help!
Using Wifi Router on O2 Unlimited web
Be very careful if you are gonna use the Wifi router and you're on O2 Unlimited web.
In December, when I ordered my HD2, I was told I would have the unlimited web & download and that O2 were the only UK provider to give a "Truly unlimited mobile web service."
I've have since had my Unlimited web bolt on revoked because they said I was using it too much. According to my bills, I had been using about 1GB per month. After numerous calls to O2 I found out that the service is not unlimited and a fair use policy applies (only 200MB per month allowed). Had I have know this back in December I might have chosen a different provider but now I'm stuck on the O2 contract until July 2011.

Thanks for the warning. However, I have the USA T-mobile unlimited data plan. I wonder if they have the same limitation. Anyone know?
Most carriers including TMO say 5GB a month. Which is quite alot if you just use the router as a backup for when your main internet goes down or your on the road, not a good idea for torrents tho.

I'm having the same problem. Sometimes I can see the network and connect to it, but I have no internet still. I installed the htc wifi app on a stock tmobile US rom, to no avail. Same thing happened with the wm wifi app that is available - so I'm wondering if TMobile is blocking this somehow?
I was counting on having working wifi tethering, as I have been doing very easily with my G1, but so far no luck. This is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

I think I saw a post somewhere saying to change your default wireless access point name on the phone, apparently it fixes it afterwards.

There is a wifi tether app in the omarket that works better.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/omarket/
Look for "Mobile Wi-Fi Router.
The app from omarket is just a beta (public) version of the HTC app, that's why it has "xda" in the name. They look the same, do the same thing - which, for me, is absolutely nothing, lol.
As for T-Mobile US, the limit is 10gb before they threaten to cap you. I've had them threaten me a few times, but so far, I can still download at 2MBit/second, lol. I have not heard of anyone actually getting capped yet, though, so I wouldn't worry. The way today's phones are headed, 10gb / month will be considered normal usage soon.
Back to the topic, I still ahve no luck with any of the wifi tether apps I have found - 3 that I know of, and i Have done hard resets, etc, changed names, etc. Still, my pc will see it but no internet. I can switch my SIM card to My Android G1, and tethering works right off the bat. I'm confounded.

BUMP. Cannot get any service within my college dorm either (yet outside, there are 5 bars and no network connectivity issues). I've been reading up on T-mobile wireless frequencies and their inability to effectively penetrate walls and other surfaces.
Here is the forum post from the Nexus boards (unfortunately a bit above my technological knowledge).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807116
Apparently to get wifi calling working, kernel-deep implementation must be applied before the app is even installed.
Google voice, although I believe you have to use a different number. On the plus side you can use gvoice over 3g as well

Calls with GV android still go out over a standard cellular network so therefore this doesn't work in the case where you have no network access. An alternative is to use a SIP service in combination with GV which is terribly unreliable (I can speak from experience of using a variety of SIP services, et.al) and also uses a different telephone number which isn't ideal in my case. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Unfortunately yes it does take away from your minutes. T-Mobile decided to get rid of the '$20 unlimited wifi calling package' in exchange for the new UMA service. Its primary purpose now is to provide service where there isn't any and/or to allow customers traveling internationally to make phone calls using their plan minutes over wifi--completely avoiding the need for an overseas phone/plan.

So, if you travel internationaly you're not charged roaming if you use your phone over wifi calling?. You just use your plan minutes as if they were domestic?

WIFI Calling takes your call from anywhere in the world and routes it back to the states as if you were next to a T-Mobile tower. This doesn't mean that you can call a number that would be classified as roaming at no cost. For example, if you are in a London hotel and connect your phone via wifi to call a local London restaurant for reservations, this would be considered an international phone call. However, if you just call your friends and family with their US based area codes, you would just be using your minutes.

Yeah SMS works the same way. I really wish I could get this to work for me as well. But Wifi calling doesn't work on the newest HD2 Android builds.
Has anybody been able to get WIFI calling to work on TMOUS, NAND?
Doesn't seem that the Devs really care about this. It's hard to even find any info. I wish this could be done as Then I could replace my wife's blackberry with UMA with my Spare HD2.
I see one dev who seems to care. Check here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=927671
Notice where it says:
Coming Soon:
Kineto GAN interface(based on CM kernel style to help work on T-Mo US Wifi Calling)
Kineto is the company that created an app that can do wifi calling for certain android phones and the app was (I think) successfully ported to the Nexus One. It doesn't do cell tower to wifi handoffs because that is apparently a chip-based feature and this is purely a software solution.

no joy here.
i've tried everything i can think of to get the built-in wifi hotspot to work, without success. i can connect, but then there is no internet access. on my vista laptop the connection properties read: "access: local only".
i've also tried tethering my blackberry playbook, with similar (non-) results.
i was beginning to think that EE might be detecting tethering and had started to block it, but i managed to connect OK today using the same sim in my old HTC Hd2 winMO 6.5 phone and the wmwifirouter tethering app.
Yes it works for me with my iPad, though i am on T-Mobile but its all part of the same network i think

Make sure you have the consumer broadband APN assigned. Search Google for the settings as I'm too lazing to paste mine! You should find them using google and then tethering will work. I use it regularly connecting my TF101.

i cant see consumer broadband on my apn list just orange internet and mms
thanks for the replies guys.
i looked at settings/ more... mobile networks/ access point names.
there was no "Consumer Broadband" APN defined, so i created one entering values derived from here:
http://www.burnedouthippy.com/2011/...onnection-problem-on-the-htc-desireorange-uk/
'Select Consumer Broadband
Change the following settings, taking care to make sure that you copy these details exactly (including capital or lowercase lettering)…
APN from consumerbroadband to orangeinternet
Username from <Not set> to Orange
Password from <Not set> to Multimedia
Authentication type should be set to CHAP.
Press your Menu button, tap “Save”
Now in theory, you should be able to create a hotspot and connect to the internet'
didn't work for me, alas!
any other ideas?

Anybody else on EE (orange) and tethering successfully? Anybody?
I have had no success either. I tried calling orange but the guy was convinced I needed LG software like Kies to be able to set it up so gave me the number for LG. I think I'll call back and speak to someone else.
success!
problem solved!
i am now tethering my laptop and blackberry playbook to my N4 on EE (orange) UK!
All that was necessary was to phone Orange and have them switch it on; simple as that. i spoke to a chap in India, told him which handset i had, and he then activated data tethering "with a 1GB cap".
i received a "updated sevices" text on my phone moments later, switched off and on again, and it worked thereafter.
there was no charge for this. my contract is a 1 month sim-only dolphin 20 with 1GB data and i would presume the tethering comes out of this allowance (although the chap on the phone said that this was a separate thing ??)
anyway, for anybody else, it's nothing to do with APN settings etc. you need to phone orange and ask for it to be activated.
I'm on ee or orange UK and my hotspot works, you have to go into a ee store and activate tethering through them, check your data plan on your my orange account like the attached image and see if it says tethering in the info underneath the bar

thanks. however i just checked my orange online account and, unless it's taking ages to update (not unknown for orange), there is nothing new listed; certainly nothing about tethering, yet my tethering now works where it didn't before.
so it looks like it doesn't need to be indicated on the account for it to be activated.

Hey guys
I have a nexus 4 going through rogers wireless, i have a 6gb data plan as well. I am using the wifi hot spot setting and creating the wifi network for my laptop. My laptop connects no problem and shows full signal, however I can't seem to surf the Web or do anything.
The laptop connects fine to my home network, and the nexus 4 is updated to the latest firmware. It is also stock and not rooted, any help?
Just to add, i do not have LTE, this is a regular data plan and tether
I'm not going to much help myself, sorry. My hotspot worked fine out of the box (I'm with Mobilicity), though I recall that I had to set up a password for it to start working correctly. Have you tried USB tethering for the sake of troubleshooting?
Just tried to tether via usb and no connection either!
I am on Rogers, my WiFi tether works fine, I don;t think it maters what data plan you have, I have a 10GB 3 year old plan. But It has to be ion WAP2 security, if you don;t do the password it won't work.
My USB tether only worked through this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet&hl=en
You need to have it on the PC as well http://pdanet.co/
Re: WiFi, I know you saying you don;t have LTE, but just to make sure go to dial pad and type in *#*#4636#*#* and make sure towards the bottom WCDMA Proffered is selected. Then check that your APN is not ltemobile.apn in settings.
Also sometimes it helps to do a trouble shoot on the connection in windows, rarely but sometimes it works from second third time.
Try PDAnet, I think it has WiFi tethering as well.

very strange: so,
What's the set up you have, ROM/KERNEL/RADIO/GAPPS?
For the test of it, if you want, I had this and it worked, you can just back up and flash this set ups:
ROM: Slim or RootBox
Kernel: Harsh
GAPPS: Slim or Banks
Radio: .33 (I have not tested it on .48)
Also if your usb tethering did not work with the PDANet, then probably something wrong in the ROM. USB tether needs drivers so if they are not installed properly will be a probably, but since WifI is not working as well I a pretty sure it's a ROM problem, maybe you just need to to do a clean flash of a similar in features ROM to what you are using now.
If you really like the one you using now, one good idea would be to do a logcat right after it connects and you can;t brows the web, and submit that to the dev thread of the ROM.

sometimes the provider blocks tethering until you buy their tether plan. even though some people say it works fine, you could still be one of the few that were blocked. i tethered for four years fine, until one day tmobile blocked it until i bought a tethering plan.
Every time I tether my N4 I have to go the through Windows trouble shooting process, it never connects right the first time.

Rogers said that any plan over 1gb of data is automatically allowed to tether
Try checking your APN settings (do a APN reset). If you have more than one, it may be using the wrong one.

Right Rogers does not block it and its free.
It maybe the new radio, but since you are not rooted, not much you can do.
One thing is try a tethering app in play store it does not need root.
Two, do a factory reset in settings somewhere.
Try changing the APN to ltemobile.apn it may work better.
Last resort is to email Google support maybe they will answer.
But also like previously mentioned do troubleshoot the connection in windows maybe few times.
Also try WAP, and no password at all.

Ok here we go:
So I am sorry I did not remember this sooner, but my friend had this issue and here is the problem and solution.
I can only speak for Rogers, other carrier maybe different. The problem is with data package but not that tethering is not active (it is by default on Rogers) but that the data is wrong. Most likely you had an Iphone or Blackberry before, or one of these devices is still listed on your account as primary(you can;t change that, they just go by what did you buy from them last, then won;t put Nexus on it).
So with Rogers there 3 different data sets, for Iphone, for BB and for Android, you need obviously Android and you don't have it.
There probably some differences but the major once is that on BB one you get free LTE on android (on older once) but it wont tether probably with other devices,(actually my friend prefers LTE over tether so he capt BB plant on Note 2)
What you do is, call Rogers Tech support,(preferably not from your phone, so you can test it at the same time) don't tell them you have nexus 4, tell them it's S3 or Note 2(just a device they actually sell)tell them that you have (depending on your previous phone with them) the Iphone or BB data there, and you need them to change it to Android as your tethering not working. They can say what ever they want, but make sure they change it, even if they say it's BS, still ask them to remove and add it, but they should know what are you talking about. If the guy is a real stubborn, asking to put on a different data plan, like flex or something just to try (make sure any changes they make don;t interfere with your payment or discounts on the account)
Once the guy/girl says it's done, turn off your phone after 30 sec. turn it back on and check if it works.
Worst comes to worst, which is shouldn't because I know for a fact they have three different datas, ask to speak to Customer Relations Department, tell them your friend had the same problem and that's how rogers fixed it.
In fact, no mater if the Tech fixes it or not still speak to Customer Rel. Dept. and just tell them that you are not happy with the data, it gives you problems, and that Telus offered you a same plan for cheaper and $350 credit for cancellation fee if you move, so you would like to see if you can get $15 off your plan.
Hope that helps.
Thank you!
After dealing with 4 customer service reps, all telling me everything was fine, I called, used your advice, and everything is working.
This was also affecting my MMS messaging, not just tethering.

So I am sorry I did not remember this sooner, but my friend had this issue and here is the problem and solution.

Still having issues with my new nexus 7 2 and trying to tether my nexus 4. Rogers tells me there doesn't appear to be any restrictions on their end.
I was looking into the APN settings, I don't really want to mess with those but it might be my only option?

Amazing! I looked for solution for a while now, couldn't find it anywhere, and yours worked like a charm!
Although I'm from Israel and my phone carrier is Pelephone, it was my problem aswell. I contacted them few times about tethering without success, they said it can't be blocked by them, neither they have special data plan for that. After I read this post I contacted them again and asked them to set my phone as Nexus 4 on their data base. I turned off my nexus, wait a few, turned on, tried again and it finnaly worked!!
Many thanks!! I'm surprised this issue isn't so common on the Internet.

As far as I know, my nexus 4 is not lte compatible.... Now are you asking if my Rogers plan is an lte plan? My nexus 4 shows H or 3g
I'm having a WTF moment.
Got my preorder One last Thursday and have been having trouble getting it to connect to the Media Link HD dongle.
First, it seems to connect and pass through image to the TV but I get a message saying something like "be sure the TV is properly configured". Then, I get other messages saying that WiFi Hotspot needs to be enabled and to go to the AT&T website, or dial 611.
After over a half hour with a service rep, I was told that the Media Link requires a WiFi hotspot, which in turn requires that Tethering be provisioned on the account... for another $20 per month for a 5gig plan. Suffice to say I told the supervisor I was eventually passed along to that the practice of incentivizing customers to preorder and stay with the company by offering a free dongle only to be trapped into spending more money every month to use it is a tactic worthy of Tony Soprano.
The part that confuses the hell out of me is that if the Media Link and phone both connect through my WiFi router, why would Tethering/Hotspot to connect to the AT&T data network even be necessary?
So, anyone else have this problem and a workaround?

i'm pretty sure there is no need for tethering. look more closely at your configuration and see if there's anything wonky going on there, first

Like? Not even sure where to begin. The phone connects to my router just fine, so that's not it. This is a real head-scratcher.
Have you tried changing out of game mode? If its not that they are forcing you to use hotspot to spend more on monthly charges ergo why it was free. Or one more possibility its just a mistake in the software and they will fix it in a future update. I'm glad I don't have att. I hope for the best you don't have to use your own data, just to use the media link

Not sure I don't have the phone yet. But that's what some other guy said he did to be able to see something on a TV. He did use a mhl cable though. So I don't know for sure if that will apply to you.

No, you definitely do not need tethering / hotspot on your account. I use the Media Link HD with my One (AT&T version) without any issues and I don't have tethering on my account.
Make sure the firmware on your MediaLink is up to date and both it and your One are correctly connected to your WiFi hotspot. Also, be aware that any complex security settings on your hotspot could give you trouble.

The firmware version of my adapter is 5.19.103.1 with no unusual settings on my router, which is an older Liksys - the blue one with the dual antennas.
The dongle recognizes my network name and my One connects for a second until a dialog on the phone reports that hotspot is required and to go to the AT&T website or call 611.
I have never applied "unusual" settings in the router other than naming the network, broadcasting SSID and applying WEP.
Any help is appreciated.

I have tethering on my plan but I did notice that the flash wouldn't work while it was connected to my MediaLink. It gave an error message saying that flash isn't supported while hotspot is enabled.
would also like to know how to get around this hotspot error.. I've tried different security settings on my wireless router; what I haven't tried is using NO security to see if that helps. will try this now and update post!
edit: even no security on my wireless router doesn't change anything.. hrmm

Yeah, this is getting wierder by the moment.
Likewise I tried disabling security on the router with no results.
I just installed a tethering app which requires root (suggesting to me that it works around any block at&t put on the ROM), started the link and it disabled tethering in favor of WiFi.
Looks like one of us is going to be on the phone with AT&T and/or HTC this week. I already have about 45 minutes invested with an appointment for Wednesday to discuss the tethering issue. Where I'm concerned, how I use my monthly bandwidth allotment is my business and they have no right to dictate limits to what I pay for within the confines of my plan.

Have you tried putting the phone in airplane mode and then just turning on WiFi? I wonder if its just because the Media Link sees the hotspot on the device as an option, even though it isn't enabled or activated.

Have the same issue, and putting the phone in airplane enables me to connect it with my tv but only for about 20 seconds. After that, the phone will
tell me that there's something wrong with usb tethering setup thus kills the connection. So technically, connecting the media link with the phone
triggers tethering on the phone, either usb or mobile data which are somehow blocked by atnt.
With regards to gaming mode, it's a mode on my tv that draws in extra frames to smooth things out, only it had a hard time working mostly lag.
As for the media link I doubt I'll need one, as my tv is a D8000 so runs wireless anyway.

Any New news on this guys? The Media link i have is a glorified paper weight for now... As far as i am aware this only happens on the At&t one..My Bro will be getting the t-mo One tommorow if it works on his ONE I will just probably give hime the media link.. what a waste *sigh...

AT&T shot themselves in the foot ( and screwed the rest of us) by trying so desperately to charge us for tethering.
Assuming we are SOL on this unless using a custom rom?

Pretty much for the moment. I tried flashing M7's ROM and it worked fine. Seems AT&T has blocked the WAP/Tethering function in either the kernel, radio, or the ROM. So, the solution would seem to be:
1) Find a ROM you can live with and flash it.
2) Find a Kernel (or radio, if that's what it is) that works with the stock AT&T ROM and flash it.
3) Wait for AT&T to get their heads out of their asses to realize that they're screwing their customers who have peripherals like the Media Link which connect via WAP and fix it in an OTA update.
Rumor has it that there's a 1.29 update out there somewhere. Let's see what happens. In the meantime, those of us who are in this boat should call AT&T's technical support and give them an earful for pushing disfunctional equipment on us. There's plenty of advertising hype from both AT&T and HTC about how cool the phone is, but nothing in the advertising literature that says how they crippled the phone.
I'm in the same boat here. There is another thread about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2242737
If I can't figure out a router configuration that fixes it, I may experiment with "rooting" and then trying to kill the com.htc.tetheringguard app. I'd definately rather have it work through my wireless router like it should, but not if I've got to leave the network open/unsecured!

I am rooted, froze that app (along with all the other AT&T bloatware) with Titanium and it still doesn't work - no link action, no tethering, either.
Frankly, I'm pissed. I understand why they inhibit tethering, especially for those of us who are on unlimited data plans. There are always guys that will abuse it. But this phone came that way from the factory, which means that even those who are on 2G plans are screwed. In either case, if I'm paying for data, it's up to me to decide how fast I want to use it, the same way as if I were to pay for a tank of gas in my car, it's not up to Exxon to tell me I can't drive on the highway.
I was supposed to have received a call back today from the AT&T supervisor to discuss options, but (surprise!) no call. Looks like I'll be having a word or two with them tomorrow - and I have half a mind to demand a full credit on the purchase price of the phone for the amount of time I've spent jerking around with them about this.
