Hi,
I have a new phone with a MicroSIM (on a new contract) and a few months left on my old one which has 3GB data usage/mo as opposed to the 750MB or something I have on the new one, so I want to use it for tethering with my new phone, but want to sell my old phone...
Is there like a dongle you can put the SIM in, and then connect to it through wifi? It's a T-Mobile SIM
Cheers
Microsim Adapter
Hello,
Option 1: buy a 3g dongle at your simcard provider
Option 2: If you have 2 android phones you can use one
with the old sim with the 3gb data.
Install wifi hotspot.
Then you can connect your new phone to the
old phone and use the internet from that.
PS: you can also get internet on your pc that way.

Hi
Thanks for the reply
I'm doing option 2 atm, but thought option 1 would be easier.
What exactly is it I need to buy? Is the device you're talking about one which takes SIM cards, and then acts as a wifi hotspot?
Thanks again

The Device is a USB stick.
You just put your sim card in it and put it in your laptop and your done.
Sorry for late response.

When I purchased this I was told that the device would work with a voice and data sim. Just that you wanted to be careful with how much data you might use. I have a AT&T sim with a corporate voice plan and unlimited data for a pda phone. I am not currently in a 3G market, but it is coming online soon, and can't seem to get connected with that sim. I have put in a data only sim from AT&T that we have but it is our emergency backup sim/card for our pos computers in our stores. I don't really want to have to purchase another $60 a month account to have a seperate sim as well as my $40 a month data plan on my pda phone, which I am not willing to give that up either. I would bump up my pda plan to $60 a month with voice if it would work that way but I just don't want to pay a $100 a month to have two seperate devices.
Basically when I am in town I can use the sim out of our back up cellular router but when I go out of town or on vacation I have to leave it behind and would like the option of putting my sim in the Shift and using that as needed.
Any ideas.
One last note. The weather will update with my sim but that is it. No email and no vista connectivity. It does say that it is connected but when I fire up explorer it beeps a bunch of times and then the red X goes infront of the network connection and it fails to load anything.

Can you try to setup a proxy on the WM site?
Maybe that will help you
set up new connection
i had the same problem. htc support solved it. you need to set up a new connection in snapvue. vista only recognizes a MEdia Net connection. go to settings in snapvue, open connections, add new modem connection, select media net with default settings, save
when you open vista the sim will be working for a connection
mine is working fine in winmo and vista with isp.cingular.com not media net, ill be using no proxies over here
Everyone thank you for all your suggestions. I should be able to do it with these ideas. I should have thought of some of these myself. Thanks again
Update: It worked, thanks a lot. I have not had to do this since I bought my imate K-Jam at over two years ago. Thanks again one more time!!!!
Hello all,
I've ran into some troubles with my device, since I have it running with a unlimited data transfer flatrate, that sim is blocked for incomming and outgoing phonecalls.
Solution on this trouble should be one of the dual sim adapters, which leads me to another problem. Since it seems to be impossible on my HTC Uni to have two simultaneous active cards running, the data one would be the usual active one for my needs.
But how to get the device automatically activating that sim, while its sleeping on an incomming phone call? Preferably without any costs on the data sim and extra costs on the phone sim either for me nor for the calling party.
Call deflection an possible option?
Since its probably a common issue im ashamed that I couldnt find any solution. Would be nice if I could still get some reply.
Thanks in advance,
Real.

Actually, I don't recall any dual SIM adaptor allowing 2 SIMs online at the same time. Looks like you need a phone able to handle that specific feature.
Your phone is able to handle 2 different lines at the same time ... but on the same SIM card. Some Operators used to provide this type of plan. A plan, 2 different numbers ... But same Operator !
I've heard that ETEN will release a Dual SIM PDAPhone (DX900) : http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Eten-DX900-is-dual-SIM-smartphone-article-a_2805.html
Anyway, I've been looking for the answer ... But, nothing yet.
Here is a workaround

This really sounds interesting, since I've got both of my most frequently used sims at the same provider. (Telefone/- and Dataflat)
Maybe my provider is willing to attach them both sims into one, or else theres still the chance of "doing by self". Another point is that those contracts dont have such a long lifetime anymore, so most likely this will be pretty mutch possible.
Sounds way better than buying a new phone, with the possibility of using two sim cards simultaneously.
Only one thing troubles me, since I've wrote about the HTC Adv beeing the mentioned device while it is Universal. Does that one have that feature aswell? I hope and pray, since this seems to be my last chance of having it more user friendly.
Any reply mutch obliged,
Real.
Bought a used uni from someone here and am trying to get it fixed (no gsm, wifi doesn't work, but otherwise seems fairly stable) I have no intent to use as a phone, just a connected pda around the house. I know I can always buy an sd wifi card, but that's no fun and doesn't teach me anything. I've got it all in pieces here and am hosing it down with contact cleaner, and I have an extremely basic question:
Do I have to have a sim card to use wifi?
Thanks!
No you don't need a sim card for that. I have a second mda pro at home and i don't have a sim card in it but i can still use the internet. So my answer is no.
Hello,
I'm from Belgium and I need to use the G1 for my work. I would like to use it without a sim card (or make the phone using the data of mine) but it seems impossible for the device to connect on internet.
I have just received the device today and I really need help. I have tried to find something on the forum but the only interesting thing I have found seems to say that it is possible.
Google is even worse than Apple which is already worse than Microsoft.. is there any good company in this world...
what do you mean use it without a sim card? As in the telephony and data connections with having to use a t-mobile sim card or any simcard?
This is a sim card phone meaning it has to have a simcard in order for you to use the telephony or edge/3g connections. No way around that.
And on a side note, if you want help you probably shouldn't spread your opinions about things that you don't know about and things you make assumptions for.
I can get into Android without having a Sim card inserted on Dev Phone. WLAN works without it.
But when there is a card inserted I cannot skip Sim pin to do things without having mobile operator service.

This is a "device" that is able of making call... this is not a phone.. you can't call iphones and htc devices "phones"... I don't care about the phone feature, I just need a small device with linux. If it was a phone, it would not need a gmail account... don't talk about things you don't know.

the fact is that no sim card is working... I'm currently using 3G with my HTC Shift, and using Edge/Gprs with my HTC Touch .. and no problem.. but the HTC Dream doesn't recognize the data plan !
I guess I know much more than you .. and my opinion is like 99% of user should be having this issue... what kind of phone are impossible to use like that ? I have 3 months to make a big project on that phone and I don't even know if it is possible to make it work without playing with hardspl.
That's crazy to see more protection than iPhones, and other htc phones.... 2 weeks to be able to order the phone and then I don't even know if we can make it work in this country ... GREAT !

Your issue is an APN issue.
Read one of the APN threads or learn to use the search Mr. Know-it-all.
I read about this somewhere, but i can't find the thread.
I know that normal T Mobile firmware requires you to connect to the web through T Mobile Web n Talk.
Well my firmware is now flash to 1.66 WWE and my phone is now unlocked.
I bought a O2 sim and a Vodaphone sim with 3GB and 1 GB prepaid data credit.
Whenever i open a browser app or go to setting> wireless controls > data connections i get this error message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
Cannot connect for unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacture's documentation and try again.
Settings
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Hi
I have done the same to my phone and it works fine on O2.
I assume you did a hard reset after the debranding operation?
Once my phone came back to life after all the software changes, I went to Start/Settings/All Settings/Connections/Connection Setup. Tapped the operator button, selected O2 from the drop down list and the phone connected and got all the necessary settings for GPRS an HSPDA connections. You will need to setup a WiFi connection first (I think). It might have downloaded the settings via SMS.
However, if you want to set your phone up manually, try this site first, filesaveas.com/gprs.html
(as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet, so you will have to add the url to the beginning of the link).
it is full of great advice for UK mobile Phone Operators WAP/GPRS/HSDPA/Email settings.
Cheers

um...
I'm not sure if i did the hard reset or not.
I'm going to test it on another Sim, as there is a chance that i don't actualy have usable credit on these Sim's so i'm going to try on a 3 Sim which gets 150mb free with 10 pound top up and is definitely for use in 3G phones.
My sims might be for wireless modem only, not too sure.
If that fails then i'll start look into other options.
How much of a problem would not hard resetting be?
Hopefully i did and that's not the problem.
Good to hear others have had success with T-mobile unlocked.
What is the worse case scenario? Re flashing and hard resetting?
Thanks.
if you were still on your tmo sim when you flashed to 1.66, then you probably still have the tmo settings for mobile data set as default. A hard reset is a good idea, and let the phone pick up the settings from the sim automatically, or at least make sure all trace of tmo is gone.
look here
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connections - manage existing connections to see a list of currently configured mobile networks
I use both a 3 SIM and a t-mobile and the HD2 will pick up their use, configure the settings and store them both at the same time and all automatically.
You shouldn't have the problem that you are experiencing. And its nothing to do with setting a WiFi connection.
Who unlocked the phone for you?

I haven't seen a phone SIM with prepaid data credits. If your phone is set for the right operaror, my guess is that you can't use this data allowance through your phone. You might try the router feature or connect a laptop to use the Web via your phone. If you're in the UK you might try T-Mobile and see if they still offer the PAYG SIM I have. 'Unlimited' data and texts are included in the month after you top up with £10. If you top up in April, data and UK SMSs would be free in May. Top up in May and browse and text for free in June. The £10 top up remains for calls. The offers change but this one suits me.
I use my laptop to connect to the Internet via my HD2 router. T-Mobile say this is against their rules. If they can tell the difference between phone and laptop use, perhaps you can use your data this way and so my earlier comment. They haven't said anything to me yet so I doubt it. I think you'd need to install the router; it's been removed by most operators.

Like I said I have the same SIM as the OP and of course it works in the phone. Its just a SIM with credit on it and I also use it in a mobile broadband USB modem through a 3 WiFi router without any problem.
Some of the prepaid 3 payg boxed deals are preloaded with bundles of data access thats what the OP must have, but there shouldn't be any problem with them connecting in a phone.

Well the O2 and T-Mobile sims that i suspected were modem only i used did not work, but the 3 payg sim i am now using is working perfectly.
3 offer 150mb free with every 10 pound credit topup.
The sims i got were not payg for phone use but modem use i believe.
In anycase it works now.
Where might i find any payg sims with preloaded data for mobile phone use?
Thanks.

I have a T-mobile PAYG SIM in my HD2. When I top up with £10, I get 'unlimited' data and UK text messages in the following month. The definition of unlimited varies but I've used over 1Gb without T-mobile becoming upset. It's not pre-loaded data but amounts to the same thing. You might need to check that the offer is still valid.
